Rules Discussion / Re: Wall(s) and Steep Hill
« on: June 18, 2019, 07:33:36 PM »
Yucky, its still ruled that way. My group does steep hill with house rules. Most of our players find it weird that there is a 1 pixel opening in every corner that none of the adjacent boundaries actually touch. Some would say crossing through an intersection of 4 lines is to cross through the 4 lines.

Unless you play a mathematician I guess

I concur with Dave.  That's how I would rule it as Steep Hill specifically says it only blocks line of sight traveling through sides of its zone.  (We have ruled that if you were to try and see from zone 7 to zone 3 it would also be blocked).

Maybe the OP isn't aware of the wording controversy.... Since LOS for the hill is blocked if it passes through two sides of the zone in which the hill exists, and since zone 7 to zone 3 would pass through two corners (not through any sides!), read as written, you might argue that the hill does not block LOS in that case (which is "realistically" absurd). Many folks are house-ruling it (and the rule is popping up in tournament settings) that the hill blocks LOS on opposite corners also.

1 2 3                    1 2 3
4 5 6                    4 5 6
7 8 9                    7 8 9

I remember this game has some Tom-foolery with corners/intersections and LOS. In the 2 examples above, each number represents a zone in the arena, 5 is the zone containing the hill, and the underlines below 4 and 5 represent walls that block LOS.

Can a non-flying object target another non-flying object in zone 4, from 7,8, or 9 in either example?

The wall blocks 7-4, the hill blocks 9-4 (goes through two sides), but neither blocks 8-4.

In the first example( left side, 1 wall); can a non-flying object target another non-flying object in zone 6, from zone 7 or 8?

The hill blocks 7-6 but not 8-6 (just as 8-4 is not blocked).

So Eye for an Eye might do two damage to a swarm if the one die attack rolls a 2?

Events / Re: GENCON 2019 ARENA TOURNAMENT!

One thought about encouraging the Kill style victory. Consider increasing the points awarded for a Kill from 3 to say 4 or 5. This provides a tournament incentive for players to create spellbooks and strategies around killing the mage.

Good luck with the tournament!

I would think that the 0-2 point draw disincentive would be enough.

It's about time someone took this kind of judging standard seriously. When I proposed using judges to adjudicate the matches at round end, it was met with derision with people saying that it couldn't be done....

Spells / Re: Healing Wand = Healing sub-type?

Doesn't seem fair when someone responds within two minutes... no one else had a chance! lol

Oh, I get it on the FM now... right... the creature is not Non-mind, so doesn't cost triple, but the single sbp cost only applies to the Mind levels as that is the only training... the other level costs double since it isn't trained in Holy... so it ends up being 4 total sbp....

Great question!

Spells / Healing Wand = Healing sub-type?
« on: June 02, 2019, 06:57:35 AM »
Does the Healing Wand synergize with the Healing Ring?

I ask because the spell that the wand allows the Mage to cast a spell with the lighted hand symbol, which I think means that is has the Healing sub-type.

Thanks!

This obviously isn't the official answer you are looking for, but I find it interesting... I have always considered the training in all Holy creatures to mean that you could pay one sbp for each Holy level (and not limited to just three Holy levels) and double (or triple?) for other schools for the same creature... but... is there a difference between being trained in a set of Creatures... any creature with Holy as one of its schools would then qualify... I think I'd agree with the OP... but I would imagine what was meant was for the creature to be priced per OCTGN. Yet another oddity apparently not very well thought out....

Jesus! People relax, OP wasn't asking for a complete overhaul of Mage Wars and reprinting the card: if he wants to house-rule the card to be given the "undead" subtype then let him do it.

Krishna! Relax, the OP didn't even state what his purpose for asking was. Once he indicates whether he is concerned with tournament play or casual play, we may have a better idea what kind of answer he needs.
Here is the stated purpose of the OP.

"Before I post some points about the topic I want to keep it as a simple question and let others weigh in first."

The conversation is at the stage of others weighing in with their perspective on the stated question.

Yes, that was the premise of my response... we are waiting for the OP to continue....

Thanks for the quick response... yes, I should have mentioned that the question related to Arena, though perhaps I didn't need to as there is a dedicated Academy area.

I didn't realize that the Ants worked differently from the Bees... never saw anyone try to use them.

Rules Discussion / Damage to Swarm Creature between attacks
« on: June 01, 2019, 11:10:04 AM »
When is the determination of the number of attacks that a Swarm Creature will get during its action?

Is the number of attacks changed during an attack action if the attacking Creature takes damage between attacks?

I am thinking about the interaction with a damage barrier, or a target with Counterattack from whatever source.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Before I post some points about the topic I want to keep it as a simple question and let others weigh in first. With the addition of 2 other spirit cards, should grey Wraith gain the undead subtype to match his ghostly brothers or is he fine where he is as the only dark nonliving creature who isnt undead?

Should it be? Other than saying that it doesn't matter because it won't get changed... I'd offer my opinion that it probably should. Personally, I don't get how a Ravenous Ghoul should be Undead and the Grey Wraith should not be... especially as other Spirits also are Undead, as you note.

I am fine with other Dark Creatures not being Living while not being Undead... I could imagine a few anyway... but this is just one of those wonderful things that makes the game feel disjointed to me.

I'm not sure where you are going with this, but you should get used to it. There is not going to be any official change.
