General Discussion / Projects.
« on: December 11, 2016, 12:47:32 PM »
Seems like every player I knows always got a "project book" including myself. I'm working on a shark focused Siren and Mid- range Dwarf. What's everyone working on as a pet project?

General Discussion / Always forget
« on: December 07, 2016, 11:27:38 AM »
It happens to everyone. You build a book, go over it, then you test it against an opponent and realize "Huh I forgot to put in..."

For me I always forget Teleport. What utility spell does everyone forget to include and realize later?

Events / Tournament Report: Mace Operation Home Front Fundraiser
« on: November 15, 2016, 09:20:46 AM »
It's been a few days so I've had time to process the whole event and am posting the actual report from an organizers stand point.

As with every event lots of interest is expressed and it's hard to get an actual head count of players until the actual day of. I'm a perfectionist OCD type with any project I run so this is just something you have to learn to deal with. Fortunately I had two excellent judges in the form of JasonBourneZombie and Magerunner. In total 12 people entered they were:

Silverclawgrizzly: Straywood Beast Master
Biblofilter: Straywood Beast Master
Drew F: Straywood Beast Master
Jimillia: Necromancer
DrMambo: Necromancer
Littlenog: Araxian Warlock
Sharkbait: Adramelech Warlock
Sarah B: Force Master
James M: Siren
Puddnhead: Paladin
Devilsvendetta: Priestess
Ki: Priestess

I must say it felt like the excitement and anticipation for this event was higher this year than in years past but I was very pleased about the level of sportsmanship I saw. Few people got a bit sore over loses and a few winners were a bit smug but nothing outside of acceptable gamer levels honestly. Can't believe we had to go to like 3rd or 4th tie breaker for the Final 4 but there you are. I personally got 6th place after going 2-1 thanks to Puddnhead :)

The people who run Mace couldn't be more gracious to us with the space we were granted and the support they've shown us. I want to acknowledge that Mace is the greatest gaming convention in the Carolinas. If you're in the area check it out.

Prize support this year was ridiculous. Arcane Wonders sent a healthy amount and a local store, Carolina Table Top Gaming was very generous as well. I was also able to hustle up some extra stuff playing the favor game so I'm very happy on the prize support aspect. Core set, PvS, Academy Warlock and a host of other stuff including some gorgeous art pieces all seemed to go down well.

In the end we met our fundraiser goal with $30 to spare so can't complain there. I'll be choosing Operation Home Front again next year and hope to see everyone back again with new faces to boot.

General Discussion / What PvS cards?
« on: October 11, 2016, 01:19:13 PM »
I'm sure a huge thread could exist over which mage you prefer to try out first, but which PvS cards are you most interested in trying out in your other books?

Spellbook Design and Construction / Viking Con Wolverine Book
« on: September 09, 2016, 10:41:32 AM »
I promised Biblofilter a spell book and slacker that I am I finally got it done. The concept is using Dragonclaw Wolverines to lay the beat down hard and keep the opponent worrying on them while you either support them with the falcons/wolves or bring out the beefy bear and Slavorg. Wolverines are some of the easiest creatures to make scary with some cheap easy enchantments.

Events / Ideas for Gen Con 2017.
« on: August 31, 2016, 12:16:16 PM »
All right Mage Warriors I'm opening up the flood gates for ideas on how to make the Gen Con 2017 tournament event better than this years. While I actually consider this year a success I'm always thinking of ways to improve. One thing I'm thinking is to limit the entries to 16 and thus create a 4 round first day event. That reduces an hour and 15 minutes from the overall invested time you need to play through and is more appealing to many I know.
Prize support will remain excellent next year and will most likely even improve over this years. Food and beverages will be served again next year as well.

Any other ideas, particularly coming from those who have actually run their own events or were in this years tournament, are welcome to be discussed in a civil manner.

I want to thank all four competitors for giving permission to post these books. I know Biblofilter posted his book on another thread but I'm including it here for record keeping.

General Discussion / Holy has arrived!
« on: August 06, 2016, 08:18:21 AM »
One thing is very clear to me now after seeing Academy Priestess and Paladin/Siren is that Holy is going to be the school to beat for a while. I fought a Priestess last night that I beat to within 4 to death and the whole time I knew that even though I had no damage I was only turns from dying. Eye for an Eye, Divine Reversal, Casiel, and other cards are going to give Holy an insane strength
Not unbeatable by any means but keep those Poison Bloods handy kids. Also yes Priest can lay down a serios whoopin now too.

Events / Tournament Report: HoshiCon
« on: July 16, 2016, 08:58:01 PM »
HoshiCon is a nice anime convention here in Charlotte NC. I took some pictures I'll try to put up later. We were raising money for Time Out Youth which is a LGBT Youth group in North Carolina. We had 8 Mage Warriors in attendance.

Silverclawgrizzly: My remade Straywood Beast Master now with more Dispel and options but without Purge Magic.

DrMambo23: Driving up from Greenville SC(bout an hour and a half drive) my friend brought a Zombie Necromancer for his first tournament.

Jimillia: The ever present Skeleton Necromancer came ready to cement her claim as the top Dark Mage in Charlotte.

Jay: The young aggressive Araxian Warlock who's insane with the rush and curse game. 70% offence and 30% defense he calls it.

Logan: Also from Greenville SC this new player brought a Johktari Beast Master focusing on the Hunting Bow.

DevilsVendetta: The man I fought two days ago with his revamped Priestess with new Academy cards. Charlottes sole Holy Mage.

Sarah: Our remaining Force Master now that TrentMagnus is in Europe. Sarah's won several tournaments in the past with her rush style.

Larrick: The man focuses on Warlord but he brought his Druid today and refined her since our Domination tournament. Leaner and meaner Larrick made good use of the little butterfly to give mana to his tree and draw fire.

ROUND 1:

DevilsVendetta VS Silverclawgrizzly: So two days ago we had a close hard fought battle where I barely got the win due to time limit and life remaining. An epic battle that could have gone either way. But that was two days ago, today I rushed in way to hard and way to fast and got the living crap kicked out of me and literally could not retreat fast enough. Though I did finally manage to kill that stupid enduring paladin I forgot Aurora ignores Guards from minor creatures and that cashed in the pain bill for me and gave Devil the win.

Sarah VS Jimillia: Nobody wants to face that Necromancer in Round 1 and Sarah went into it hungry and tired. Jimillia made short work of her I'm afraid and coasted to the fastest win of the day. I understand some dice went against Sarah and Jimillia was in no mood to go easy on her friend and female mage. When the Necromancer is out for blood then you'd best get out the way.

DrMambo23 VS Larrick: Druid VS Necromancer fights are becoming very common in Charlotte as Nature tries to fight back the darkness. This match went to time as both players seemed to be feeling each other out. I didn't see much of it but I saw Larrick take the win on time in the end.

Jay VS Logan: Jay brought the pain train early on. A solo build he uses Modoks Obelisk to distract creature based books while he lays down heavy curses and fire. At first when I looked at this it looked like Logan was coasting to an easy win as Jay was horrible hurt with no real damage on the Johktari. But the tide turned when Jay used his second Drain Soul and even though the Taints were all Purified later the momentum was all Jay the rest of the match and he eventually chased down and killed Logans Beast Master.

ROUND 2:

DevilsVendetta VS Larrick: Two meticulous players who plan well in advance most games. This game was well paced with both mages getting a number of solid creatures out. It went to time and when the life was counted Devil had a 3 life lead and took his 2nd win. A fortunate Divine Intervention saved him from a hoard of hungry plants and it looked like Larrick was just out of ways to hurt him. In the end Larrick played a strong defense late game but was seemingly losing ground slowly but surely. The Devil will wear you down if you let em.

Jay VS Jimillia: Dark Mages collide!!! Going in at a disadvantage since his beloved poison tactics were useless against the Necromancer Jay decided to try and just out muscle the Necromancer. However many of us have learned from painful experience that Millie will take a heap of punishment before breaking and her creatures are capable bringing all kinds of hurt. Faced with his usual Ghoul Rot and Drain Soul turned against him Jay used his Purify he carries for "In case of Millie" emergencies but it just wasn't enough. I've a feeling a fight for Necromancer supremacy between the Dark lady and JasonBourneZombie is inevitable.

Silverclawgrizzly VS Logan: Straywood VS Johktari! This match was so much fun. I cast two Rajan Fury totems and told Logan we were gonna have some fun. We both started with fairly standard BM tactics going for our Lairs on turn one(and putting them adjacent even.) I went for my Enchanters Ring while Logan went for early Leather Gloves. We both brought out some Falcons though Logan got a Timber Wolf out first. Logan is a new player and I've been around the Nature block a few times you could say. He played very well but was put on the defensive too early. I got the win and a new hatred for Ranjan Jungles Talon(he's been out my book for months and he took offense by doing something like 18 damage to me over the game.) I hope to see Logan again at events and see what new strategies he's come up with. We both agree on one thing: Necromancers are an abomination!

Sarah VS DrMambo23: Speaking of Sarah was delighted to get to fight two in a row! Much as I'm delighted to pay my bills every month I'm sure. Sarah recovered a fair bit from her first lost and brought the fight to Mambo I'm told. The fight went back and forth fiercely from what I saw. When the match was over I heard Sarah say "I got one less than what I needed, he got exactly what he needed." Turns out she'd made an easy mistake and dodged the wrong zombie forgetting that a nastier one was waiting to do some damage and it did exactly the amount needed to kill her. Mambo stated afterwards that it could easily have gone the other way and both players agreed it was a highly enjoyable match.

ROUND 3:

Due to unforseen circumstances DrMambo23 and Logan had to depart the tournament earlier than planned as they were needed back in South Carolina. We had a great time hosting these guys and sincerely hope to see them at future events.

DevilsVendetta VS Jimillia: HOLY VS DARK FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP!!!! These two have fought with their respected mages several times, it has almost always ended with the Necromancer reigning supreme. Millie is a proven Holy killer having defeated a former Mace Champion Priestess and every attempt I've ever made at a Holy Mage. She's a stone cold killer who can predict her opponents with uncanny accuracy. Devil however has been playing with a new found level of brilliance and inspiration. He generally down plays just how good he actually is. He's won several matches on OCTGN and earned no small measure of respect doing it. It looked very dark for him however with Taint markers, low life, and a Deathlock preventing him from healing. However Purify can still remove Taint and the damage brought on by them. This gave Devil new strength and broke Millies concentration long enough for DevilsVendetta to rally and win his first major Mage Wars Tournament!!!!!

Jay VS Silverclawgrizzly: I've been wanting to fight Jay for a while now. We've not had time for a casual game and have dodged each other in tournament play lately. Last time we fought he lost the ill advised "Holy Warlock" bet twice. He came wanting revenge this time and I'm sorry to say he got it. I should have NEVER taken Purge Magic out of my book as even a Mage Wand with Dispel can't get the hate off fast enough. Early cursing while building up his attack let him hit me with a one/two assault I just wasn't ready for. He killed a Pet Falcon and a Pet Tegu(I did get a Rot off though) and finished the game by saving his mana to the point he was able to reveal Cheetah Speed and Mongoose agility to chase me down and hit me with TWO DRAIN SOULS at once!!!! Holy crap life sucks when that happens and I truly hope I gave him indigestion.

Larrick VS Sarah: I watched little of this match and though I don't know a lot of details I do know Larrick picked up the win off the Force Master. Sarah was a trooper for playing but got little sleep last night and missed breakfast I'm sorry to say. After a hard day of demos yesterday she just didn't have the energy to fight at her normal level.

Overall a great tournament. I want to thank DrMambo23 and Logan for making the trip up and I along with the rest of the Charlotte Mage Warriors congratulate out HoshiCon Champion: DevilsVendetta!!!!!!

Events / Tournament Report: Spandex City Comics & Games Charlotte NC
« on: June 16, 2016, 09:40:55 PM »
Hi folks I'm back with another tournament event that took place here in Charlotte NC. We got word of this event rather last minute as it was originally scheduled for the 30th but was changed due to a scheduling conflict. My normal judge, JasonBourne Zombie couldn't make it so I handled this one. As a note matches go for 60 minutes at this venue.

Mage Warriors in attendance:

Sarah: Though primarily a Force Master this night Sarah decided to try a secondary book: Druid.
Jimillia: The Necromancer returned with it's skeletons in tow.
Jon the Earth Wizard: Jon returned with his super hard hitting Wizard.
DevilsVendetta: Despite his infernal name the devil actually primaries as a Priestess and used her tonight.

ROUND 1:

Jon VS Sarah
Jimillia VS Devilsvendetta

Sarah managed to take out Jon with his primary mage! In what can only be seen as an upset the Druid got it's first win. Jon played Deathlock early on and that was NOT his friend against a Bleed happy Druid.

Jimillia beat Devilsvendetta. The dark side slide a victory by due to a timing error on Devils part. It looked fairly close for a while but Jimillia don't often lose with the dark one.

ROUND 2:

Jimillia VS Sarah

Jon VS Devilsvendetta

Sarah defeats Jimillia. I'll admit I didn't expect the Druid to beat the Wizard in Round 1, and I REALLY didn't see this one coming. Again Deathlock turned out to be the opposing mages downfall. Sarah seems to be perfectly fine letting her tree take her damage for her even if it can't heal.

Jon defeats Devilsvendetta. Heavy offense at the start and the effective use of a Wizards Tower spelled the end for the Priestess. Corrode does make for shorter life spans and it became too many issues to deal with all at once.

ROUND 3:

Sarah VS Devilsvendetta

Jon VS Jimillia

Sarah defeats Devilsvendetta and goes 3-0 securing the tournament win. This match actually went a little over due to our policy of "equal number of turns with Initiative" and the Devils life just finally gave out. Sarah went in doubting  herself strongly but ended up with store credit as the victor.

Jimillia defeated Jon. Oh the bitter irony of your own wall dooming you. We've all been there, you cast it to give yourself a respite and it blocks your ability to destroy the enemy for turns to come. An early lead was whittled away as Jon was looking to slow Jimillia down. Sadly for him she spent the breather summoning up enough hated creatures to turn Jons poor Wizard inside out.

Prize for this event is store credit. Sarah spent some of it on a milk shake. Her new philosophy is "Oh we get store credit? Then I'm just going to keep winning and getting more milk shakes." It's awesome seeing a Mage Warrior with their priorities right. As a note we were short this week as one of our regulars had family obligations.

Events / Tournament Report: Get Some Games Charlotte NC
« on: June 10, 2016, 12:36:21 AM »
We have two great venues for Mage Wars in Charlotte. I'm going to keep on going threads for both of them with tournament reports. Here is the report for the 6-9-2016 event at Get Some Games.

Mages:

Jimillia: Jimillia played her skeleton Necromancer which has won her several tournaments and got her second place in our coveted Mace: Wounded Warrior event last November.

Jon: Big Jon plays an Earth Wizard and plays it very aggressive. He's hard hitting with a stronger defensive strategy than most people suspect.

Silverclawgrizzly: I used a different style Straywood Beast Master book for this event. Though this is my primary mage this was a totally different style suggested by Puddinhead.

Larrick: A very interesting take on a Bloodwave Warlord. Larrick focused on board control to slow down enemy range units. It was an experimental strategy that worked ok.

Sarah: Sarah uses a Force Master and can either force rush you or build for a turn if need be. Normally however she hits hard and fast repeatedly.

DevilsVendetta: The Devil won a few OCTGN matches with his Fire Wizard and won a tournament not long ago with it. Little unorthodox but a solid wizard build.

ROUND 1:

Silverclaw Grizzly VS DevilsVendetta

Jimillia VS Larrick

Sarah VS Jon

The very last thing I wanted to fight my first turn trying out an experimental book was a wizard. The Straywood strategy I was trying out was to cast 2-3 Animal Kinships while throwing down cheap animals the first few rounds. I played a Lair on like turn 6 or 7. I have to be honest I had thought I'd lost this when time got called because it went to Life Remaining. However I had a small lead there and took the win. Overall the strategy went well but I do NOT want to try it again against Devils wizard without fine tuning it some first. He took an early lead and I was only barely able to shift things back around my way towards the very end of the match when he was out of creatures and towers. He had good armor but eventually enough dice and piercing will prevail.

Jimillia beat Larrick in what looked like a close fight. I know Larrick had her down to 9 life left before she Drain Souled him which swung things for her.

Sarah beat Jon in what I heard was a great match. Sarah is a tough nut to crack because she reads opponents well.

ROUND 2:

Silverclawgrizzly VS Jimillia

Sarah VS Larrick

Jon VS DevilsVendetta

Oh joy now I get to fight the book that usually beats the crap out of my normal Straywood with an idea I got from a puddin head. I've fought this book enough times to know I have to Lair and Enchanters Ring on Turn 1 and go for sturdier creatures first. I knew she'd Idol of Pestilence which is why I had the magic healing tree in my Lairs zone and a Wychwood Iron Vine on my mage. I was able to corrode the idol and send a small tactical assault team of a Timber Wolf and a couple of Thunderrift Falcons to take it out. Yes I spent a lot of resources on this but they all survived so it paid off. She focused on killing my first Animal Kinship and healing tree. I took a small lead in damage after sucking up some beating earlier. I kept my distance and my Mage Wand(with Dispel) around far longer than normal. This allowed me to handle her hate in smaller doses than normal. My animals wore her down faster than I think she was expecting and when she cast Deathlock earlier to prevent me from healing(when she had the advantage) I chose to let it stay up. In the end I picked up the win.

Sarah beat Larrick very abruptly actually. They were fairly close with Larrick building strong momentum. However he only had like 7 life left at this point(Sarah had 11) when Sarah got Initiative and had her damaged Invisible Stalker attack as her first action. Well she rolled exactly 7 damage all Critical and finished Larrick off before she lay one impressive beat down on her with the three surly dwarves in her zone.

Jon beat DevilsVendetta in what I hear was a Wizard Tower duel. Don't know many details but Jons been playing Wizard since day one of his Mage Warrior career and I suspect experience played a large role.

ROUND 3:

Silverclawgrizzly VS Sarah

Jimillia VS Jon

Larrick VS DevilsVendetta

Sarah had no interest in letting me build up a nice Animal Kinship power base and came after me ridiculously fast. She enchanted and equipped with her quick cast while beating my face in with her full action. For a while I tried to trade blows with her as I was unavoidable, had her outnumbered, and was well armored and a little buffed thanks to the two totems I did cast with a Straywood Hound and Darkfenne Asp. Well that worked sorta....but then I got scared and ran away like a scared rat. After that I slowly started healing while using Tangleroot to slow her down. I was able to recapture a lot of my life while she got only a little of hers back. So feeling slightly braver I poked my head out from behind my Wall of Thorns after having my Lair summon a Steelclaw Grizzly. Ha joke was on me she had Cheetah Speed and Mongoose Agility and ran past my guards and put some more beat down on me. I fought back and eventually managed to get the momentum. Putting a Weak on her as well as a Rot(thanks Mr. Tegu!) helped as well. I squeezed a win after taking her Forcefield down through swarm I finished her off with my mage.

Jon beat Jimillia due to attacking before she was ready from what I overheard. Being very focused on my finals match I couldn't tell you more as it ended before my match did.

DevilsVendetta beat Larrick after a good solid struggle that left them both hurting. Larrick is one of our newer players in terms of tournaments under his belt and he fought well but against mages who knew their books like the backs of their hands. Overall he says he likes his walled off tactics but wants to refine them some more.

So I took first place and got some store credit which I used to buy prize support for our upcoming charity tournament next month. Hooray pre-order Academy Priestess! Also a gift card to Get Some Games. Get Some is a fantastic game store if you're ever in Charlotte btw with a nice cosplay and anime section in the back.

Our judge for this event was JasonBourneZombie whom I'm sure could tell you more about the matches I wasn't in. He runs a tight ship with his events and is always professional as well as level headed. So glad he's joining Jimillia and I as a judge for Gen Con in August.

Alternative Play / 3 Mage Challenge Tournaments.

Last night I competed in a 3 Mage Challenge Tournament here in Charlotte. I highly recommend it to folks trying to spice up the local scene. Here's how it works:

Make 3 spell books using 3 different mages(and no different types of Wizards don't count) and try to make them as different as possible. At the beginning of the event list your three mages in the order you're going to play them. That way nobody can pick who they run based on their opponent. For example I ran: Necromancer, Priest, Anvil Throne Warlord. My pairings were: Druid, Wizard, Priestess.

It's pretty simple really but you get a real benefit in that you're forced to play outside your comfort zone some against matches you wouldn't normally get.
