Mages / Priestess VS Priest.
« on: March 26, 2014, 12:35:16 AM »
Ok I've played with the Priestess a fair bit and have a fairly good understanding of her basics. At least to the style I want to play her. I just made a Priest book yesterday and went up against my roommates established Priestess book. Mind you I currently have a slight head cold and I hobbled the book together while watching television. As expected I got the holy bees wax beat out of me. I took out an Archer, a Unicorn, and Brogan but in the end I lost which is cool.

What I was curious about is what do folks see as being the big differences between the Priestess and Priest. to me it seems as though the Priest is built for offense(killed an Archer in one hit) while the Priestess is a defensive build more times than not. Both have the same creatures and access to healing but their core abilities sort of define their roles. What other differences do they have?

General Discussion / So we're getting miniatures eh?
« on: March 18, 2014, 11:53:07 PM »
Ok I just saw the pictures of the Gama Trade Show in Las Vegas. One of them had miniatures for the Wizard, Priestess, Warlord, and Necromancer. Let us now begin the epic discussion of how awesome this is!

Spells / Mort and Brogan
« on: March 18, 2014, 01:03:17 AM »
Given that when it comes to skeletons the Necromancer likes to just recycle the forces of Westlock you can cast as a Priestess/Priest has anyone else given any thought as to whether or not Mort might have some connection to Brogan Bloodstone? Both are the respected champions of their respective alliances after all. Maybe he was Brogans father in life?

Strategy and Tactics / Eternal Servant
« on: March 14, 2014, 04:02:44 AM »
So I put together a Necromancer the other day, haven't tested it yet, and I was thinking about Eternal Servant. now I have some hope we'll be getting some more undead on down the line but I'm also curious as to which of the current line up normally gets the token in your experience? I'm going skeletons with a guest appearance by Malacoda though I'm curious about just in general.

Off topic / Mage Wars Table Top RPG

It'd be awesome is all I'm saying. Yeah we're all playing mage classes but there's enough diversity to go around.

Mages / So ummm...anyone else notice the Warlord is getting a tank?
« on: March 01, 2014, 12:51:38 AM »
I was on the Mage Wars FB and I read their latest news sheet and I couldn't help but notice at the top A FRIGGIN TANK! What's more it looks like a super pimped out dwarf ubber tank!

Yup I'd say the balance is gonna swing very positively for the War School hehehehe. Voltaric Shields can't stand up against some heavy caliber artillery 8)

General Discussion / A little positivity.
« on: February 28, 2014, 11:55:21 PM »
What are the things you like most about Mage Wars? Just in general what do you enjoy? For me:

-The game is legitimately challenging to me. All the players around me that I regularly play with got into it at about the same time. Nobody has a clear advantage in skill or experience. I have to fight and fight and fight some more for every win and I learn from every loss.

-I think the artwork is really cool. Certain cards such as Samadriel or various enchantments are well done indeed.

-Mentioned it in another thread but I like spell books. I'm way too nerd elitist to ever play with a puny deck. But a spell book? Oh yeah there we go. Give me arcane might at my finger tips. If I want to feel power from a deck of cards I'll go pretend to be a certain Cajun mutant....

-I actually like a slow release schedule. One of the things that's turning me off clix is it seems every month something out is getting put out. That gets expensive and annoying. 2 a year is actually pretty cool with me.

General Discussion / Mirror Matches
« on: February 25, 2014, 11:47:07 PM »
Sat down to play a game with a friend today and we were both amused that we'd chosen to use Stray Wood Beast Masters as our mages. Neither of us had ever fought the same mage before and we had a blast of a match, especially when we both put down Rajan's Fury! Oh boy is Cervere horrifying and a Feral Bobcat with Bear's Strength is a tight little threat for sure.

Anyway I was curious what other mages stack up very well or very poorly against themselves?

Off topic / Past few days have been good days playing Mage Wars
« on: February 23, 2014, 11:59:52 PM »
Played my friend Millie and her Air Wizard, used my roommates Warlord as I'd left my books at home accidently. Awesome match between us where I kept loudly complaining at the Warlords build to my roommate who was laughing that I didn't understand his genius(honestly 6 walls?) while I got schooled in why Wizards are cool. Iron Walls might as well be made of tissue paper against lightning....and soggy tissue paper at that. Still great game and now she's ready for our event this Sunday.

Yesterday I hung out with my best friend who hasn't gotten to play much due to work and family. He was messing around with his Druid which is one mage I've tried to get down but have trouble with. He beat my newly made CURSE YOU Warlock, he beat my Priestess which surprised me(also someone took my Teleports out of that book....) but his Force Master was no match for the Warlock. Amazing day hanging out with my buddy and now he's ready for the event.

Today another friend was feeling kinda down so we made plans to play some Mage Wars and maybe work on a character sheet for a table top game. I built the CURSE YOU Warlock book for him as he's still waiting to get his core set and I used my new and improved Beast Master. Hard fought battle which saw two falcons, Galador, and most of my grizzly get cooked alive but in the end I eked out the win. My roommate smug that my inability to play his Warlord would make me easy pickings to his Fire Wizard asked for a match while my Warlock buddy went and fought another friend who'd come over with his Necromancer. Well the Fire Wizard wasn't nearly as scary as the Air but had we continued indefinitely he'd have probably wore me down. However we stopped after an hour fifteen minutes and called it a draw(I did massive amounts of damage to him but stupid Regrowth Belt...) Awesome matches both times for me today and apparently the two dark mages next table over were having the game of the gods where the Warlock barely got the win. Also now all three of those guys are ready for our event.

So yeah glad I found this game, it's a blast!

Spellbook Design and Construction / CURSE YOU!!!! Warlock.
« on: February 18, 2014, 03:05:59 PM »
Ok here is my curse heavy Warlock build I made purely for casual games. Not tournament legal due to using a promo card.

Equipment:
Lash of Hellfire
Sectarus
Demonhide Armor
Elemental Wand
Ring of Curses
Fireshaper Ring
Helm of Fear
Molochs Torment
Eagleclaw Boots
Cloak of Shadows

Conjuration:
Wall of Fire 2
Mana Crystal 2
Enchanters Wardstone 2
Battle Forge
Mana Siphon

Creatures:
Dark pact Slayer 2
Ravenous Ghoul 2
Necropian Vampiress
Sersiryx Imp Familiar

Enchantments:
Ghoul Rot 2
Chains of Agony 2
Agony 2
Mage Bane 2
Poisoned Blood 2
marked For Death
Maim Wings
Enfeeble 2
Block
Nullify
Death Link
Vampirism
Bear Strength
Rhino Hide
Cheetah Speed

Incantation:
Teleport
Drain Soul
Drain Life
Dissolve 2
Dispel 2

Attack:
Fireball 4
Flame Blast 2

The idea is with Sectarus and the Imp Familiar I could theoretically cast 4 curses a turn. If I get those Enchanters Wardstones out then they're more likely to stick around, especially if I drop Mana Siphon, which I'll cast either early on to give my opponent something to aggro other than me or late game to really hit their hard pressed mana supplies.

I use the creatures to protect me and harass, Enfeeble to slow down their guys, and put down enough dark magic hate to keep them reacting to me rather than enacting whatever foolish plan the other mage had planned. When you're having to pay 12 Mana just to get rid of a Ghoul Rot(and I got two of them in my book) then I'm ok with you doing that.

I think I may be a few points short but I'll stack a Regrowth Belt or Regenerate in there. Like I said this isn't tournament legal yet but once Forged in Fire comes out.....it's legal and getting upgraded most likely.

Constructive comments welcome of course 8)

Ok I got to thinking about creatures I'd like to see added. Here's a list of them, please feel free to add onto it.

-Dragon. I don't care what Mage gets to cast a dragon that mage is now my new favorite Mage. Preferably the fire breathing terror inducing kind, but acid breathing black dragons are cool too.

-I want a T-Rex. The acid spitting raptor is cool but is it as cool as a lazer shooting T-Rex would be? Nope. Not even close.

-Griffin. On the cover art of the box one of the mages has a griffin. Griffins are cool and powerful creatures. They could have a preferred diet of Thunderift Falcons and Guardian Angels :)

-An ill tempered mutated sea bass. I can only assume the entire premise of the Siren is to give us said sea bass, otherwise why make a water mage to begin with?

-Trapdoor spider. I'm terrified of spiders so I assume everyone else on Earth is too. But think about it, a creature you could play face down like a trap, then when the enemy mage comes in AHHHHH SPIDER!!!

-Some other type of ape. Monkeys are great, everything is better with them, just look what they've done for barrels. The Mountain Gorilla is cool but the more monkey business the better I say.

Also it's almost 2am on a rainy Saturday morning here in the Queen City, so I'm a bit bored at work.

Mages / Who's the hardest Mage to get right?
« on: February 11, 2014, 11:53:29 PM »
Noticing that every mage plays differently I was wondering which Mage folks have the most trouble getting going at a functional level? Functional being described as running the way you want it to.

I've been tinkering with a Druid lately and just haven't been able to make her click.

Alternative Play / An idea for Tournaments.
« on: February 06, 2014, 10:45:37 PM »
I'm planning to hold an event next month in my home town of Charlotte NC. We're all sort of new in my group, which consists of about 15-16 Mage Warriors. Most of us started around the end of the year so I had an idea to test what we've learned.

Each round I was thinking of requiring players to change Mages from the previous round. 3 rounds, 3 different Mages. No different flavors of Wizard don't count.

What do people think of this idea? It'd stop any one type of build from just dominating and teach new players to diversify their strategies. Obviously you give people a chance to move cards from one book to another if they need due to having only limited Elemental Wands for example.
