First OCTGN Mage Wars Tournament
On the 23th and 24th May, I will start the first Mage Wars tournament on OCTGN. Because I am hosting this event for the first time, the number of participants is limited to 8 players.
This will be the rules:
- The first two rounds (Quarterfinal and Semifinal) will be held on Saturday (afternoon and evening gmt+1), that will be late morning and early afternoon for the players from America. The final round starts on Sunday (evening gmt+1). That’s again early afternoon in America.
- Encounters will be chosen randomly. Right from the first game the tournament is played according to the knock-out system, meaning who ever loses his game is out of the tournament. The player who wins three times in a row will be the winner of the tournament.
- Each player may only use the same deck during all of his his games. A copy of this deck (Format: .o8d) has to be sent to me before the first game. In the game the referees will look at each players used spells and compare with their declared decks. If anyone uses a spell that is not in the specified deck, the player will be disqualified.
- The referee monitors compliance with the Mage Wars rules and helpful when ever there is a problem between the players concerning these rules.
- A game has no time limit, winner is the mage who survives at the end. In the event of a tie, the player who has the highest mana value on the field (Creatures + Enchantments + Conjurations + Equipment)
- All cards available on OCTGN are allowed in this tournament, this includes promo cards. The only exception is the Ballista. It is treated as if it had the Trait Unique.
If you want to participate in the tournament, send a PM to me on the forums or via OCTGN. If interested, I can give you a quick tutorial how to install and use OCTGN.
Number of players signed in at this time: 8/8
Waiting list: 1/2
-
This is awesome!
-
Why is there a tie-breaker if the game is to the death?
-
Because both mages can die at the same time.
-
When exactly will this take place? May 25th is not a Saturday. ???
-
Edited! :)
-
And the final rule...and no one talks about the Digital Fight Club....

Only 1 place left!
I won't tell names here, but what i can say is ... the contenders are from all over the world :)
Still looking for people, that want to stream these games with english commentary. Send me a message, if you are interested.
-
Contenders from all over the world, different styles, different strategies... this remainds me of Blood Sport (Great movie! :) )
-
So, is anyone from Brussels going to represent? That would really make it like Bloodsport.
-
I was searching for a name ... ALL THE TIME ... thank you guys. The follow up tournaments will be called Kumite! :)
-
I was searching for a name ... ALL THE TIME ... thank you guys. The follow up tournaments will be called Kumite! :)
What does that mean?
...do we have any say in this?
-
Also there are eight players and its on octgn. Why not call it the Octournament?
-
There is still one free place remaining in the tournament ;)
-
A shame I will have not internet access during the proposed dates, but would love to join in upcoming editions! Enjoy!
-
Wish I didn't have to work the night shift..... :-\
Should be able to be a spectator on Sunday though!
Will the games be open for spectators?
-
Eight players have signed in. To ensure we have 8 Players acually playing (some of the signed-in-players could be hindered tp play) I will accept 2 more players. They will be added to a waiting list and move up, if another player is absent.
-
Ok, I think it's time to give you guys a quick update.
The following players have been signed in for the tournament:
BigNic
Henry_Ketchup
Dchamp
Keejchen
vere
Theasaris
SharkBait
Puddnhead
To finish their sign-in, every one of these players has to send me the deck, that he will be using during the tournament, by Wednesday 20th May. The deck has to be in o8d-format (OCTGN deck builder) and cannot be changed during the tournament.
My email address: Schwenkgott@web.de
The randomized tournament grid will be posted, when all Players have confirmed their participation.
Until now, there will be two streams: My own stream in german and Intangible0 will be streaming in english. If you want to help with streaming and commentary, please send me a message. You need to have premium OCTGN (in order to create password protected games)
-
Vere! COOL :) Good Luck! :)
-
I was searching for a name ... ALL THE TIME ... thank you guys. The follow up tournaments will be called Kumite! :)
What does that mean?
"Grappling hands" according to Wikipedia.
-

I wish you didn't wait until the day before to say what time the matches are. I will probably have to go grocery shopping in the morning and maybe go to the laundromat too since the laundry room in my building didn't reopen like it was supposed to a few days ago. Please make sure a backup has a spellbook ready just in case of the possibility that I do not make it in time for the match. I might still be able to make it, but I am not completely certain.
-
It won't be a problem if a game has a 30min delay :)
-
Should I win today I may also have timing problems for the semi-finals tomorrow. I probably won't be home before 6pm utc+2... For the future it would be better to announce the schedule a bit earlier. ;)
-
Games are up, tabs for the streams are open...seems things are starting.
Have fun everybody :)
-
Hey guys,
as you might have seen, we had some problems, but we tried to make the best out of it.
My two games started delayed but were finished as planned.
Intangible's first game had connection problems. This never happened before with this player, so we could not prepare for it. The second game could not start due to one player not showing up. This can always happen. We had no reserve player who could take the place for him. So second game was won by disqualification.
The grid is updated. I hope we will evade these problems tomorrow so everyone can watch three great games :)
-
Keejchen still wanted to play the match out and waited for Sharkbait. Unfortunately I wasn't around at the time but they did play the match out and Keejchen was the victor. So, while a little unconventional, at least the win wasn't by DQ.
Thanks for the good sportsmanship Keejchen!
-
So, is anyone from Brussels going to represent? That would really make it like Bloodsport.
too bad i didn't see the invite for this tournament earlier..in fact i was born and raised in Brussels, Belgium...not so far from where our friend Jean-Claude came from ! ;)..except i live Antwerp now, and he in Hollywood !
I found it very surprising to see a reference here to my homeland coming from you Laddinfance..so i had to react to that ! Do you have any relationship with Belgium, Laddinfance ?
i hope i will be back to see the live coverage this afternoon..but first a bbq with my in-laws !
i will try to sign up on a next tourney !!!

Today:
5 p.m. (utc+2) BigNic (Druid) vs Ben_Tyrer (Warlock)
Theasaris (Wizard) vs Keejchen (Wizard)
8 p.m. (utc+2) Final Match
-
Cool :)
I am pretty interested in Druid vs. Warlock match. Also, what type of wizards? Earth vs. Earth? :)
-
Air vs Air :)
-
Wow! Very intense games on the semifinals.
German ones will be uploaded on my Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8SKmwEEoM9v2M51GnH3urg
In the Final Round, we will see the confrontation between an Air Wizard (Keejchen) and a Druid (Bignic).
-
The tournament is done and we have a winner.
http://challonge.com/FirstMageWarsOCTGN
Keejchen with his Air Wizard could take victory over Bignics Druid in a highly competitive match.
Big thanks to Intangible for his help, to the players for their participation and for to all the fans watching and giving us feedback.
The next tournament is definitely coming. Keep your eye open.
-
Were these games recorded? Any way we can watch them online if we weren't available over the week-end?
Thanks

Games with english commentary will be posted in the next days. I think Intangible wants to edit them somehow.
-
I hope for another one to be soon :)
Thank you for a great evening and good work. Intangibles commentary was pro :)

Now that's interesting!
Also, kinda surprised promos were allowed, but it's been a while since I was on Octgn (technical difficulties) so I guess that's standard now?
-
With OCTGN everyone has access to Promos, therefore the playing field is level.
-
Promos add more diversity and complexity to the game, so it gets more challenging. That's the reason behind allowing promos.
-
Creates a different metagame from meatspace tournaments, which has advantages and disadvantages. Did anyone try Ballista cheese?
-
Schwen stated in his tournament rules, that balista had unique trait right from the start ;)
-
Will you be posting Bignics spellbook too?

Cool, thanks.

I'm rather late to posting this (been super busy) but we have the videos up now. They turned out pretty good :)
Also, thanks to Arcane Wonders for posting these earlier!

-
very nice game, congrats for both players. i like the comments too, without them it would be much harder to watch :)
hope to see more of that kind of initiative in the future.
-
Intangible0, your coverage of the matches is great!
I hope you commentate on the next event as it makes it a really good, insightful, watch.
-
I also really liked watching the commentated game. It was very helpful for me as a newer player who is still learning a lot of the basic strategy of the game. My only comment is that the audio was occasionally glitchy (watch for a minute or two starting around 10:30 in the finals commentary (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwCojRg_nEY&ab_channel=ArcaneDuels), for example). It happened a few times throughout the match.
-
Thank you for doing the commentary on these games and posting them. The audio quality was a little iffy in places, but otherwise well done.
I was surprised by the play styles I saw. There was a distinct lack of fast, efficient pressure in both games. None of the 3 players applied significant pressure quickly, but they didn't have strong late game plans either, which seemed weird to me.
