Title: Wounded Warrior Tournament: Charlotte NC
Post by: silverclawgrizzly on July 20, 2014, 09:13:33 PM
Mark this on your calendars. On Saturday November 8th 2014 at 2:30pm there will be a charity Mage Wars tournament at the MACE Gaming Convention in Charlotte NC. I'm posting this now and I'll continue to update it as more information comes in. But it's a standard 120 point spell book event. 3 rounds.

For months now I've been bragging about how awesome the Charlotte Mage Warriors are. Now we're going to invite you all to come see for yourselves our hospitality as we raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project.

Entry fee is yet to be determined(most like $10) but we're giving away prizes to all who enter. Such prizes include:

-Core Set
-Forged in Fire
-Druid vs Necromancer
-Force Master vs Warlord
-Westlock Play Mat
-Spell Tome 1
-Mage Wars Ball Cap
-1 4XL t-shirt(Mind Control)
-2 2XL t-shirt(Mind Control)
-1 Large t-shirt(Wizard VS Force Master)
-2 Mage Wars ball caps
-1 Large poster of the Force Master fighting the Bloodwave Warlord. It looks SWEET!
-2 Alternate Art Beast Master
-1 Alternate Art Priestess
-1 Alternate Art Priest
-1 Alternate Art Araxian Warlock
-1 Alternate Art Johtari Beast Master
-1 Alternate Art Force Master
-1 Alternate Art Wizard
-3 Large Druid Buttons
-3 Large Anvil Throne Warlord Buttons
-Enough promo cards that if you were Gambit you could take down a Sentinel factory.

I'll probably get some sort of trophy as well, frankly given that I've several months to gather more prize support and I'm ridiculously good at this kind of thing prizes are the one thing I'm not concerned about :) All proceeds go to the Wounded Warrior Project.

The link to donate is:
https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org/individual-fundraising/MageWarriorsfortheWarriors

If you donate it'll send you an e-mail thanking you and showing your total donation. We will accept these e-mails at the door as proof you've paid your entry. The minimum you can donate to enter the tournament is $10.00 but if you donate more I'll throw more free stuff at you.

I'm still editing the site so bear with me. The important thing is you can donate and I can see if you did. Feel free to donate and pay your entry now or just donate even if you have no desire to attend the event anyway.

I know I say this every time but I'll try to come to this :P It's for a great cause and it's far enough in advance that I should (hopefully) be able to. I'll try to bring some friends along with me :)

That's cool Winter cause I can promise you I'll have mine with with me ;D

We're still debating the entry fee. With the amount of prize support we're offering there's some discussion about a $15-$20 entry but I'm thinking we'll keep it at $10.

depending on what you want and how far you want to go, there is one thing we like to do here in Charlotte is eat... Just have to find/kniw the good places.

Given the hotel the convention is held at is smack dab next to several excellent restaurants then yeah you'll be good on food :) Two good mexican, good sushi, decent italian, decent chinese, and a few bars all within a 5 minute walk. Plus hey this is North Carolina, we got BBQ ;D

Though now you mention it I bet I could get some of those restaurants to throw in some gift cards for prize support.....

Since this is going to be bigger than our usual Charlotte events, will promos still be allowed?
Title: Re: Wounded Warrior Tournament: Charlotte NC

Nope. Fraid we can't allow the promos with out of towners showing up.

Oh that morning around 9am I'll be running some Mage Wars demos/practice games if anyone wants to warm up before the tournament too.

You know Silver... If we have enough interest, we could hold some side events.  Smaller buy in, same charity (like $1-3) where you challenge someone and winner gets a promo card.  Simple, and more laid back.  Also you get instant gratification for the winner, could have those going on most of the day and I could help police that.

Not a horrible idea. We'll discuss it a bit with the other Charlotte Mage Warriors.

Oh just also as an aside I've spoken to my friends at Papa Johns, if you like pizza we'll be feeding you at this event as well. They agreed to throw us some food.

Ok so got an update on the event here. The meeting with the convention gaming coordinator went very well and we got most of our wish list there. We have space for 40 players easily. Whether we get that many....anyway we got some OP Kits added as prize support. The last two OP kits in fact. So that covers the low level prizes to a degree.

Now I do need to point out that this event is happening at a convention and that means you have to pay to get into said convention. It's $25 for a Saturday pass or $28 for the weekend. Mace is actually a really good con in of itself that I've personally been attending for over a decade now. Lot of good stuff there. Now yes this means you gotta pay to get into the con and then pay us for the tournament but hey we are providing you with a free meal at least. Also in addition to the hundreds of other games going on that weekend we'll have Mage Wars stuff going on all weekend too.

The tournament format and time has been listed on the Mace website.

http://ogre.justusproductions.com/index.php/ogre/browseschedule/allx

Pre-registration starts in a few weeks.

You'll also note we have some other events scheduled on Friday and Saturday. They'll also be a raffle with prize support donated by us.

I posted a link to this in a couple of local-ish game groups to see if anybody is interested in going. Hopefully some are. If we get a group together we'll probably come, if we don't, probably not :(

It's far enough ahead of time that people who are interested won't have any excuses though. They should be able to make arrangements with work and such.
Title: Re: Wounded Warrior Tournament: Charlotte NC
Post by: silverclawgrizzly on August 16, 2014, 11:38:12 PM
It's a hike and I know it. Not to mention you still have to pay $25 just to get in the convention, which is why I'm wanting to keep the entry fee at $10. It will be at least worth a day trip though as the event doesn't start until 3pm someone COULD leave early in the morning as far away as Atlanta I imagine, boogey up here, play, then make it home at a decent enough time. Bout a four hour ride.

Post by: silverclawgrizzly on August 27, 2014, 12:09:13 AM
I'm debating allowing the promo cards from the past few OP Kits(lets say 4-6) and the Promo Pack if players pay a little extra. This would A: Allow more variety and B: Generate a few extra bucks maybe. I can of course make sure copies of all these cards are available to anyone who doesn't already have access to them.
Title: Re: Wounded Warrior Tournament: Charlotte NC
Post by: urlGrey on September 14, 2014, 03:11:45 PM

Two from Pittsburgh are coming and we're very excited!

My two cents, not that it's worth two, on the promo cards is to either not allow them (or certain ones) or to allow them for free.  Even if it is a good cause, and it certainly is, are we sure we want a fee to interact with the actual gameplay?  Then again, I guess it's only a couple bucks...

Anyway, this is a wonderful thing to look forward to after Halloween!

Good to have you on board urlGrey! Well I agree with you actually with the promo cards but the support for them has been pretty strong locally and as I'm depending on my local crew to loan me boards.....yeah lol. So a Raincloud may be seen.

Title: Re: Wounded Warrior Tournament: Charlotte NC
Post by: silverclawgrizzly on September 14, 2014, 11:58:31 PM
Funny you should ask as a matter of fact I do. OP Kits 4-6 and the Promo Pack. So for reference:

Joseph Trueblood
Staff of Storms(I know it's beatable though trust me I do it constantly)
Mana Vampirism
Wall of Force
Spiked Armor
Fire Elemental
Bloodwave Greatbowman
Raincloud
Hurl Meteor
Alter of the Iron Guard
Temple High Guard
Critical Strike
Summoning Circle
Elfrics Life Ring
Holy Strike
Vorpal Blade
Plagued
Debilitate
Leviathan Scale Armor
Sunfire Burst
Kumanjaran Leopard

I'll note that I will gladly provide these promo cards to anyone who wishes to use them and doesn't have them. I want it to be clear I can make multiple copies of the OP Kit ones available to use and that preregistering for the tournament OR the convention itself nets you 2 free promo cards before the event even starts. If you pre-register simply send me a message with the cards you'd like. I've personally been fighting against each and every one of these cards except OP Kit 6 and not a one of them is game breaking in my view. To pre-register for the tournament simply donate $10 to:

https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org/individual-fundraising/MageWarriorsfortheWarriors

All proceeds go directly to The Wounded Warrior Project. If for some reason you pre-register and can't make it I will mail you the cards you want and I dunno a button or something. Note this doesn't apply to the Promo Pack cards. You have to come to Charlotte and get those as prizes(though I'll loan you one if you want.)

No GenCon promos? :( Wanted to try some of those out lol.

Do we know exactly what Leviathan Scale Armor, Sunfire Burst and Kumanjaran Leopard do yet? Haven't been able to find a good picture.
Title: Re: Wounded Warrior Tournament: Charlotte NC
Post by: Laddinfance on September 15, 2014, 12:23:36 PM
Leviathan Scale Armor is like a standard chest piece, it gives 2 armor and Hydro -2.

Sunfire Burst is a 2D quick action attack spell. 6-7 it dazes, and on an 8+ it burns and dazes. It also has +2 vs nonliving creatures.

Kumanjaran Leopard is 13 mana cat that has elusive and can doublestrike.

Those are the basics.

If this was closer to home I would be able to make it but alas I am out of vacation time for the year. :(

Edit: I did however throw down my entry fee. If someone shows up and cannot afford to play let them in on me.

Maverick what I'm actually gonna do is get a Christopher Walken standee, put it in front of a spell book and board then write "Maverick" on it and let people play you in case of a bye round 8)

You may now register for the Mace Convention and for events:

http://www.justusproductions.com/index.php/mace/registration

After getting your ticket you may then go to the Games tab and get set up to sign on for games. Always cheaper to pre-pay than to pay at the door.

"I'm here to chew bubblegum and play Mage Wars. I'm all out of bubble gum."

technically, it would be -

"I have come here to chew bubblegum and play Mage Wars…and I’m all out of bubblegum.”

After one day I have exceeded my financial goal for the Wounded Warrior Event. I am in fact over by about $10. The actual tournament, as well as an entire day of demoing still awaits me tomorrow. I've taught, oh I dunno, about 8 people how to play this game today and helped my local players train for the tournament.

I. Am. An. Exhausted. Grizzly. :P

Sooooo tired.....tournament ended at 8pm today. Winner crowned...pictures coming....results coming....books coming. Raised $560 for the Wounded Warrior Project. Force Master won. Priestess got second. Force Master got 3rd. Wizard(Earth) got 4th.

So much fun. I played 8 consecutive games on Friday back to back. I then played more today when I got in at 9am on 3 hours(and that's being generous) sleep. I haven't won a game all weekend cause I've been teaching and demoing. I'm going to friggin murder the next Mage I play.....several days from now.

Mission successful. Going to bed, then I'm gonna go play Shadowrun tomorrow.

Thanks to all that supported and helped.

Ok here is the actual run down of events.

Friday I got to the convention at 3pm and unloaded the massive amount of prize support I had. Though I did apparently forget to bring the roll up map and artwork. For the best really as my demo table got busy fast. I'll state this now: If not for the other Charlotte Mage Warriors I could not have done this by myself. From 3pm-1am I was non-stop teaching/playing/demoing/talking Mage Wars. I did not get a seconds breathing room. The game was VERY popular and I kept hearing "I've always wanted to try this but....." Yeah the dealers room sold out of core sets by the time it closed Friday. I eventually got all the newbies together and had them compete in a "newbie tournament" for some of the smaller prizes. That went over like free candy at fat kid camp. I wrote down all their names....I'll find that list when I go through my bags.

Saturday I woke up after getting little sleep cause my third shift working booty didn't adjust as well as it normally does and I drank too much caffeine the night before. Whatever I'm a Silverclaw Grizzle thus I can do anything, so long as my friends are backing me up again and they were. I got to the con at 9am. The local Mage Warriors all wanted to practice for the tournament but nobody wanted to use their actual books against each other. This led to them fighting it out with their "B Books." More new people came by and I showed them the game and taught some of them.

At 1pm I left the demo table in the hands of some of the other players while I went out to eat with some more. I got attacked by an angry yellow jacket and my Japanese food was horrible. This has no bearing on anything Mage Wars....just putting that in there for excitement. For the record I'm alive and the yellow jacket isn't.

At 2pm I moved all the prize support to the Tournament Hall. This was a giant ballroom where all the convention tournaments were going on. Legend of the Five Rings, Hero Clix, Marvel Dice Masters, and something else were going down. We ended up with 12 people in our tournament which was double the next highest turn out. We rule, they drool. The pizzas Papa Johns donated came in and I gave some of them to the other tournaments. Again that went down like candy at fat camp(I heard that expression and now it's my new thing.)

At 3pm I paired everyone up and we got down to business. The players and their mages were:

John E(Force Master)
VS
Josh W(Araxian Crown Warlock)

Brian V(Priestess)
VS
Andrew N(Necromancer)

Jimillia W(Wizard Air)
VS
Logan(Wizard Earth)

Sara B(Force Master)
VS
Kiara M(Priestess)

John M(Wizard Earth)
VS
Adam M(Adramelech Warlock)

Rob R(Druid)
VS
Joseph C(Priestess)

In the end the top six were:

1st: John E(Force Master)
2nd: Joseph C(Priestess)
3rd: Sara B(Force Master)
4th: John M(Wizard Earth)
5th: Brian V(Priestess)
6th: Jimillia W(Wizard Air)

I'll note that several matches came down to very close calls and those rankings almost looked very different indeed. Jimillia in particular showed incredible skill but she lost very close matches against Brian and Joe that could have easily gone her way and neither of her losses came from Mage death.

In the end Johns Force Master stood triumphant after 4 rounds. He took one of the artworks donated by Lord of Winter and a t-shirt donated by Arcane Wonders. Joe took another of the artwork and the roll up map. Sara took the last of the artwork and Forged in Fire. John M took the core set.

The champ John E has requested that next year Karate Kid III rules be in effect so he'd only have to fight in the last round.....but I think I'm just gonna ask him to help me judge instead lol.

Here's my book. I finished 5th but came within doing 1 damage of being in the mix for 3rd/4th and also I believe gave the champ his longest match of the tournament. The points missing are for a Temple High Guard, Joseph Trublood, and an Altar of Iron Guard. I might be off on something else but pretty sure this is the book.

My strategy was Turn 1 - Crystal & Cleric
Turn 2 - Move 1 and cast a Harmonized Temple a space above the bottom center and have the cleric pray
Turn 3 - Summon a Guardian Angel and play a nullify/block

And then after that my strategy depended on my opponent and what I felt was needed. I was able to play an Elemental Wand with Force Hammer in all 3 matches that did most of my damage but it was quickly stolen by the Forcemaster in my 3rd match as he was able to out pace my Nullifies.

Thanks Winter you da man. Ok in order those pictures are:

Logan and his Earth Wizard. He literally learned how to play the night before. He went 1-2.
Me and my Beast Master. I stopped demoing for one match against Joseph so I could let out some stress :)
Rob and his Druid.
Adam and his Adramelech Warlock. He was actually helping me judge and acted as the "bye round."
Andrew VS Logan and Jon M VS Joe
Same
Joe and his Priestess. He took 2nd place.
Brian and his Priestess. He fought some amazing matches and nearly beat the champ.
Same.
Jimillia and her Air  Wizard. Honestly I did not envy her opponent list. Logan, Brian, Joe as she took on two super tough Priestess books.
Force Master Battle between Sara and John E
Josh and his Araxian Crown Warlock VS Kiara and her Priestess
Bunch of matches. We had like three tables filled up.
Joe and his Priestess again.
Jon M and his Earth Wizard
Brian VS Millie
Rob again.
Brian again.
More matches. I'm in the background.
Another shot of matches.
Me awarding the Champ his prizes. The t-shirt he has on and the artwork he chose.

Mace actually had a professional photographer cataloging the convention and they were nice enough to loan us for these shots.
