Custom Cards / Custom card contest
« on: August 22, 2015, 01:21:03 AM »
hey Forum, just had a small idea - how about someone uploads a picture and everyone creates card including the picture. The uploader decides which one fits the most and the winner gets to upload a new picture!

I did this once in my ex-magic community and it was lots of fun and many discussions came up (cards were to over/underpowered, were not designed well or pretty good)

Only problem: I have no idea how to create MW cards, there is a very simple tool for magic cards but maybe someone higher on the Arcane wonders hierachy can help us there if we are enough people :3

2
So I want to show Mage Wars to  couple of friends soon, the prebuild spellbooks do not really represent the game for me so I wanted to create 6 equally strong spellbooks that come closer to competitiv books than the prebuilt books, are stronger in strategy and theme but easier to get into. The friends have experience in other card games such as Magic.

What I had in mind:

Druid
Necromancer (either Zombies or Skeleton-only)
Warlock (Curse or Burn)
Wizard (WizTower+Control)
Priest (Angels+Control)
Warlord (Dwarves or Orcs/Goblins)
Forcemaster

I own MWstarter, spelltome 1, DvN, FvW, CoC,FiF

Some spells I want to have in all of the spellbooks:

Dispel (x11)
Dissolve (x10)
Seeking Dispel (x5)
Force Push (x7)
Block (x7)
Nullify (x7)

Based on this card count I came to the conclusion that 4 books may be better than 6 because then i can put in more cards of the same name than just 1 which is greatly increasing the complexity of strategic decisions players have to make.

So Forum: 4-6 what Spellbooks should I build? What could you imagine yourself enjoying for the first time playing mage wars?

My favorite Ideas are:

Necro (skeletons) representing the swarm-playstyle

Warlord (Dwarves) for the Conjuration-heavy buddy-method (only a few creatures, walls and a strong mage giving commands)

Forcemaster for Solo-mage action, very controlly

Curselock to experience the power of enchantments, slowly killing the enemy mage

Priest for mighty angels and pacify

Oh i am so unsure, help me out :D

Alternative Play / Draft/Sealed Mage Wars
« on: August 27, 2014, 11:29:06 PM »
Hey Forum,

I love the game and nearly all of the cards thus I am sad that many of them will never see the light of competetiv play. Within all TCGs/LCGs there are cards that do not match the current powerlevel and Mage Wars has no way of dealing with it.

Many of you may have heard of Drafted/Sealed playstyle in Magic - I found it to be the most enjoyable way because it challenges deckbuilding, descisionmaking and playing all in the same manner!

[Drafting is where every player has 3 Boosterpacks containing 15 random cards and they open up the first one, pick a card and give it to the player that sits next to him, this goes on until every card is distributed and then you build a deck out of the drafted cards; Sealed means you get a bunch of random cards - 6 Booster - and go for the best; Both build a deck out of 23 cards and 12 Lands (not included in the Boosterpacks)]

So here goes my tricky question:

How to add this to the Mage Wars universe?

Since you have several Mages you'd have to choose a Mage first (which is the first problem, since the opponent should not know your mage and 2 of the same is kind of boring) - A fine Solution is randomly picking a mage (and giving the ones where there are male/female orc/dwarf the abilitiy to choose what Mage you want)

Next problem is: There are no boosters. Since their content should be random i'd be pretty difficult to manage without giving some mages a disadvantage :/

Sealed could be like the starter spellbooks with a fair toolbox to customize the books, which will need a lot of balancing.... Not happy with my thoughts...

Please help me, I am somewhat desperate.... It is just impossible :(

My version of the Curselock - Sectarus and Sersiryx form the core pieces and a battleforge may help me to equip my mage! I added more Teleports/Force Pushs as usual to gain more speed. Blood Demons should trigger enemy guards and Adramelech is "the big guy" for when i am unable to handle a swarm and to create a "no go" area :D
If the enemy mage is solo as well I switch to ranged fireball-wand with fireshaper ring.

What are your thought? Less wardstones? Maybe add a bear strength and Mongoose Agility?

Strategy and Tactics / Current top-notch spellbooks?
« on: August 15, 2014, 01:26:28 PM »
So I know that this game is farely balanced, nevertheless i think there are a few premium builds, feel free to discuss, to add to or remove any of my suggetions:

1. Control Wizard - has been strong since release, adding wizards tower just made this build go through the roof!

2. Beastmasters Swarmimals - His ability to cast additional animals is super strong and will bring you a lot of troubles! Tanglevine the mage and hunt him down!

3. Curselock -  Curses are VERY strong in masses and the male warlocks ability to recycle them is badass!

Honorable mentions:

Adramelech warlock can be quite awesome since she may try a demon swarm with wildfire imps or just praise the lord of fire and go for the throat! Had a lot of fun with her and i see her as being a very good mage!

The Forcemaster might be good too, but I am just not good enough to play her and there are many mages that play nonliving creatures, which are not affected by sleep :(

Necromancer may swarm good too and can choose between skellies and zombies, which I love, but he is missing an alternative winning option (Sardonyx is not a threat x.x)

I have not played the druid yet so i do not know how good she is and what she is able to do but she seems too slow to appear on this list, furthermore she has a big disadvantage since she is super vunerable to fire!

Player Feedback and Suggestions / Best/Ugliest Card Artwork
« on: August 10, 2014, 09:07:05 PM »
Hey Forum,

So I want to hear your thoughts about your (least) favorite Artworks, since i have to get this off my chest and I am way to often on this forum and there is not much happening :(
Please don't feel offended, I am sure that every artist did a great job and deserve to be printed. I can see that there are other ideas around artworks and everyone prefers a different style.
Furthermore I had to pick between MANY not-so-good and MUCH MORE perfect cards, sometimes it is the cards design that does not allow to be creative (like some equipment) and please consider that i really like most of the art in this game!

Best:

Block/Nullify - Maybe it is because every Spellbook has them, but both cards represent Mage Wars for me. They look furiously good and I fell in love since i saw them!

Ravenous Ghoul - I loved Magic, since it has a lot of grim and dark artworks, this is what drove me into it in the first place and kept me in for a long time! Ravenous Ghoul to me is the most gruesome card there is so it desevers a mention. But there are better looking cards!

Togorah - Like THIS bad boy ent! He looks really nasty and I would love to play him! (But my girlfriend has dips on the druid :D)

Selesius, the East wind - Whoa, righteous fire and grace. She looks so awesome!

Pacify - grim, shady, dark: Thats how i like it, even if it is a holy card!

Arcane Corruption - so this one features the paladin and you can see a story in the picture (this is not the only card that does so, but my favorite!) The bear strength (in fact all of these animal-enchantments tell their story pretty simple) brings nothing but pain to the paladin! It is just so detailed!

Bear strenght (alterned artwork) - again a story, but with fun, maybe its not the best artwork and not well suited for this list, but i laughed at it

Worst:

Skeletal Minion/Sardonyx/Deathfang - whats up with this plain skeletons, they look very bad to me! Look at Skeletal Senetry/Knight, this is how an evil, rotten skelly looks like!

Adramelech - If you ask a 15 year old how to draw a cue chubby demon it would probably look like this.

Burst of Thorns - that priests face reminds me of Nicolas Cage. Nuff said!

Valshalla/Samandriel - the 90ies called, they want their style back.

Libro Mortus -  The Necro spellbook is my personal favorite but on this card i had to laugh, was it because of the dumb looking skinned face? Or because of the ridiculous lightning effects that make no sense to me? I will never know!

Funny mentions:

Barracks - I like the artwork but every time i shuffle through my cards I see a modern Base. Please tell me you do too  ;D

Battle Forge - Is this a wookie? Because to me it looks like a wookie!

Decoy - Not sure if cute or horrible artwork but I love it for irrational reasons!

Spellbook Design and Construction / Where angels dare....
« on: July 29, 2014, 12:59:13 PM »
Hey Forum  ;D

So Samadriel, Vashalla and Selenius are three bad-ass angels (ok, selenius has the best artwork) and we have guardian angel and grey angel - where are the angel-spellbooks? Is it just a dream because they cost too much?

My vague idea would be a Priest with Selenius and maybe Vashalla, using his holy avenger for guardian angel and lots of asyran defenders and 1-2 clerics to pump Vashalla. Besides this one can use ignite, combustion and his ability for some fun moments (just as mentioned in the Mage Wars Monday Podcast)

So why is no one using angels? They fly, which gives most mages problems, they can be healed pretty easy, they aren't bad at attacking - seems fine to me but i think i missed a point somewhere, forum, go on, upset me  :P

I know this might trigger some negative effects towards me but feel free to discuss my opinion.

So why exactly is Toni Darling exposing herself for the Mage Wars franchise? Everything looks completly arranged, the shirt, her enthusiams... This is just awkward - I don't know her but i suppose she is there because she is an attractive female and for no other reason - I thought AW could do better than getting on the "sex sells" train which dissapoints me (maybe just me). AW is certainly not the only Publisher and won't be the last.

The comments right under the video, having nothing to do with AW, disgust me even more:

"Chronus D. Greed

Nice dices =)"

"Алекс Иванов

I think Toni is more awesome, when game) And she has a great T-Shirt)) Operator knows what is best to take perspective) Ans so big wonderful eyes!"

This again is just me being offended, sure many of you look at things differently (otherwise such acts of promotions would not happen) and some might even think i have double standards regarding my posts in the "Where are the females" thread. Anyway, I am emotionally attached to this game because I like it a lot thus i am posting this.
My political/philosophical on society are irrelevant to the game itself, but i like to point them out.

AW, you don't need boobs to promote your game, it's awesome on it's own!

Events / Mage Wars - Germany
« on: June 20, 2014, 11:56:49 AM »
So I have this great game and only a few friends to play with (mostly my girlfriend) and while i am very glad she really enjoys the game (she isn't really into all that nerd stuff) i am lacking more opponents!

Without facebook or any social network my lack of connectivity presents itself brutal and I am hoping to meet new players here:

Also wenn du im Ruhrgebiet wohnst, schick mir einfach eine PM und wir können uns mal auf ein Match treffen!

Rules Discussion / Enchanters Wardstone stackable?
« on: October 01, 2013, 08:45:43 PM »
Hey folks, next question:

Do multiple Wardstones trigger if one enchantment is destroyed? So for example if i had two stones out would my opponent have to pay 4 mana?

Spellbook Design and Construction / Yet another Meta-Mage discussion
« on: October 01, 2013, 04:30:27 PM »
Hey there,

Is it because of the Wizards versatility that most decks focus on him?

Is standard-piest worse than necropian vampire-priest?

General Questions / Hawkeye + Healing Light?
« on: October 01, 2013, 08:38:37 AM »
Hey folks,

so i stumbled across some questions - does hawkeye adds +1 dice to the asyran Clerics healing light since it is a ranged "attack"? Somehow i do not see healing as an attack more as an ability (it is even marked in gold, not in silver, on the card) and hawkeye as an enchantments that targets stereotypical archers.... on the other hand healing Light HAS a ranged ATTACK icon

Creatures with the Flame+X trait do not suffer any extra damage from burn conditions? Even if the burn condition deals flame damage?

I guess there are simple answers to those questions, please get my facts straight :D

Spellbook Design and Construction / Wizard Control (First Spellbook)
« on: September 30, 2013, 03:20:42 PM »
Hey folks,

So i was bored and made a Control Wizard Spellbook focused around Wizard's Tower, Mana Siphon, Suppression Orb and Mordok's Obelisk.

For the Tower i ioncluded a toolbox of Flameblast, Fireball, Jetsteam and Lightning Bolt

Now i added more mana draining things like Suppresion Cloak, Staff of the Arcanum, Drain Power (2x), Mana Leech (2x), Enchanters Wardstone (2x) and Essence Drain

As removal i got Steal Enchantment, Seeking Dispel (3x), Dissovle (2X) and Dispel (2x). Bansih (2x) should work out against real bad issues and marker-creatures like Pet/Blood Reaper/Holy Avenger...

Regarding battle and mindtricks i added Decoy (2x), Jinx (2x), Nullify (3x), Teleport (2x), Teleport trap , Block (2x) and Enchantment Transfusion (2x) as well as Dispel Wand (2x)

To gain more mana advantage i grabbed for Mana Crystal (2x) and Arcane Ring and for protection i choose Elemental Cloak

To finish my opponent who might be starving for mana i use Darkfenne Hydra and Gorgon Archer, as well as Screech Harpy (2x) to deal with flyers

My question is: Are Elemetal Wands still useful in Wizard Tower decks? Is Huginn better than Dispel Wand?

I just designed this Spellbook and never played it, i know it has a lack of healing and mana drain deals no visible damage on the board but i imagine playing the named cards right will just frustrate the opponent and reduce each effecient move he did by paying lots and lots of mana to actually DO stuff. Moreover i plan on ruining calculated mana plans per turn. However I never played against the Forcemaster so i guess he might be a problem by being more "solo" than i am

It has to focus on the enemy mage whilst maintaining the enchantments and conjurations.

Now finally due to my lack of experiance - How viable is such kind of Deck (lack of aggro and healing)? What would you add/sort out?

Player Feedback and Suggestions / Base Set + Conquest of Kumanjaro
« on: September 29, 2013, 07:11:48 PM »
Hey Folks,

so after a few games of the base set i wanted to expand my cardpool and bought Conquest of Kumanjaro - somehow i regret my descision because the suggested spellbooks couldn't be build without the Forcemaster VS Warlord set :/

Besides this i got what i wanted, now i am able to differ the spellbooks of priest/BM, healing charm is fantastic, knight-smashing-trolls, spiked pits and angels - just purely awesome!

This is a small issue, i am totally hooked to the game and wanted to buy the other addons even before knowing that i would be needing them but so i feel a bit forced to do it because otherwise i cannot get my full expierience out of CoK.

Whatever, just me whining a bit :D

Off topic / Fun Questions
« on: September 06, 2013, 03:30:52 PM »
So i got Mage Wars and after reading all the stuff and having a real look at the cards i totally fell in love with the game. Being the person i am some courious questions and thoughts came across my neoliberal-european mind and thus i present them more for fun, but feel free to discuss seriously (If there are hints in the lore :D) or add more ones!

Otherwise delete it or move to offtopic....

1. Is the Beastmaster vegetarian/vegan?

2. Most clerical women don't dress like the priestess! Maybe the temple of Asyra will be a good spot of bringing faith to an atheist like me

3. Why the heck is every mage so great about fighting to death in the arena?! (I saw this discussed in this forum and i stumbled across this moral question too)

4. Even if those battles took place the Warlord/Warlock somehow does not seem to be the guy for fair rules...civil rights, prevention of death to millions of farmers, villagers, elves and dwarves.
