« on: October 12, 2012, 09:34:19 AM »
Can you guys tell me a bit about cardgamedb.com? I've contacted the guys over there, and they seem really cool - I just wanted to know if this is something you guys would really like or not.

Thanks!

We don't currently have a list of participating stores - but as soon as we do, we'll work to try and find a solution to get that information to you guys.

General Discussion / Re: Laid back or aggressive?
« on: October 10, 2012, 10:43:53 AM »
I'm almost always an incredibly aggressive player by default. I play a huge creature pet spellbook, I buff the crap out of him, and then I go for the throat. I've always loved the Beastmaster in this regard.

I've wanted to build a trap spellbook for some time, bouncing creatures between teleport traps, hellfire traps, into poison gas clouds, making them pay for movement, etc. Just death by a thousand paper cuts.

General Discussion / Re: Lower Starting Life: Tried it?

Most of my games with playtesters or design team members take between 35 minute and an hour and a half.

Although, the Mage Wars staff had a tournament last Christmas and no game went to time (I think we have a 50 minute time limit).

That being said, we all know the cards really well and have very aggressive strategies. But overall, I think you're right, knowing your strategy speeds the game up an incredible amount.

We're doing our best to keep game times down for new players by suggesting they play the apprentice mode first (a limited spellbook, a limited sized arena, and limited stats).

Rules Discussion / Re: Decoy: Confirmation of Use
« on: October 10, 2012, 10:36:35 AM »
I play a big creature pet spellbook, so my Beastmaster is constantly putting nullify, reverse attack, block, and reverse magic on his pet (usually a Steelclaw Grizzly or Highland Unicorn).

Occasionally, when all of those resources have been used up, I'll throw down a decoy, making my opponent think that I'm just putting another one of my buffs on it and making him reluctant to attack.

I think Decoy is best used (like any other bluff), when you can set up your opponents expectations. If you put a hellfire trap in two zones and they both go off. Then next time, you can just play a decoy and a hellfire trap, you've conditioned your opponent to believe that both of them must be hellfire traps.

After that, once it's revealed that one of them was a decoy - he'll be more likely to walk into zones with facedown enchantments (afterall, he's thinking, some of them are probably decoys), that's when you can double down with two more hellfire traps. Etc, etc.

Custom Cards / Re: Clumsy Giant

I kid you not - we once playtested a spell like this. I can't remember a lot of the details, but we definitely have gone through the idea of a giant that had one foot in each zone!

Spellbook Design and Construction / Updated Starter Spellbooks!
« on: October 10, 2012, 09:19:27 AM »
Hey gang,

Based on the amazing feedback here on the forums, on facebook, BGG, and through our own playtesting - we've updated and improved all the spellbooks that come in the Core Set.

You can read the full article here.

I have copied and pasted the main improvements from the article below.

Quote
1. You can now build all four mages using only the Mage Wars Core Set. You can build them all at the same time, or separately. But no other purchase is required to build these mages.

2. Each spellbook is now more flavorful and unique to each Mage. For example: we took minor heals out of the Warlock's spellbook (a holy spell in the Warlock's spellbook - blecch!) and instead gave him Drain Life, Vampirism, and Vampiric Strike! These spells now heal, cost him less points, and do damage to his opponent, the perfect Warlock solution!

3. All the spellbooks include within them their counterpart Apprentic Spellbook (marked with an *), which means that you can start playing the game with the smaller apprentice spellbooks, and then when you're ready, simply add in the spells in these spellbooks! This allows you to slowly get to know each of the mages, a little bit at a time, so that you won't be overwhelmed by all the different spells right up front.

4. Each mage is perfectly balanced, with 120 points in each spellbook, so right out of the box you can play against your friends, family, and gaming group without having to worry about customizing your own spellbook. You can tweak these as you like as soon as you get more familiar with the game.

Again, thanks so much for always giving us great feedback and helping us constantly improve the quality of Mage Wars. You guys are an amazing group of fans and we couldn't be luckier to have you!

Right now we're looking at a nominal fee for the kits, just to help offset the cost of a quality OP Kit. I'll have an update on what the exact cost will be sometime here in the next week, week and a half!
