Wounded Beastmaster
« on: October 22, 2015, 10:34:54 PM »
My Wounded Warrior event is coming up and this year two great judges have stepped up to run it so I don't have to. So what I have is a rare chance for me to enter one of my charity events and find out just how good I really am. With that in mind I'm taking my favorite mage and planning to beat any and all comers. Here is the spell book as it currently stands. It WILL be modified some before the event so I don't mind posting it. Positive constructive advice is welcome:

So, what's the plan?

From what I can see now, I would miss two spells:
Defend, always nice to protect a wounded creature or your mage against attacks. (F.e. spawn in deploy, defend in first qc)
Eagle Wings, because flying bear is awesome ;)

Akiro, I have never prayed to you before. No one will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, or why we died. All that matters is that one stood against many. That's what's important! Valor pleases you, Akiro... so grant me strength! And if you do not listen, then to HELL with you!

Catapults... because flying goblins are also awesome :)

I would probably drop one tangelvine and add one [mwcard=MWSTX2FFI03]Disarm[/mwcard] . 3 tangelvines seems  like a too much. :)

Schwenkgott-Defend is a good idea actually I may consider that. Eagle Wings is a spell that makes it's way in and out of this book from time to time. It may go back in.

Boocheck-Actually I want a 4th Tanglevine. It's amazing how those will mess someones flow up. A Disarm isn't a bad idea though.

Right now the Decoy, a Teleport, and Etherian Life Tree are all on the chopping block. I'd put in another Force Push to sort of compensate for the teletport, giving me 5 points to wiggle with.

how do you want to open, i hardly see chances to get fellela and lair to work, i.e just lack mana to cast the other if i start with it

I start with the Lair and a Brace Yourself on Turn 1, I can normally get Fellela out by Turn 3 depending on how fast my opponent is coming at me. If I think they're coming in hard and fast then skip the Brace Yourself and bring her out on Turn 2. If I have a turn of breathing room then I Mana Flower and put on an Enchanters Ring on Turn 2.

Fellela even when cast later, say Turn 5-6 can be a real game swinger on a lot of levels.

I'm disappointed in there not being more grizzlies based upon who is playing the book :P

In terms of some of your enchantment selection: I personally find Mongoose Agility to be significantly more useful over the course of the entire match than I find Cheetah Speed. Have you considered adding another MA or two? Have you used CS as something other than a way to get into combat one turn earlier? I could see giving the bear the opportunity to ignore guards being more useful than CS.

I also agree with the tanglevines. With your spawnpoint putting creatures on to the field, holding the enemy in place will be useful. You may consider an astral anchor or two, assuming you can use your domination cards.

I would personally add another rouse the beast or two in there as well. It's cheap for the beastmaster, so you might as well abuse it.

Those are my observations for now, I'll try to take a longer look at it tonight as well.

Those are some good points Sharkbait. Here is my response:

People tend to under value Cheetah Speed, I use it for my mage so he can get into and out of trouble fast. I pair it with Mongoose Agility a lot on the mage especially if he has his Elemental Wand out so he can do some run n gun. A second one is not completely out of the question though as I sometimes give it to the bear or a pet wolf.

Astral Anchor. I've debated this card for this book. I can indeed use my domination cards if I want. I just don't know where I'd get the points.

Rouse the Beast is great I admit. I have some hopes of slipping in another one. As you said it's cheap for Beast Masters and that gives me an advantage other mages won't have as much.
