Anvil Throne Warlord - allround
« on: September 07, 2016, 06:41:41 PM »
I'd like to have some feedback on this spell book I'm working on. It should allow for quick attacks as well as slow build up.

Also, my goal was to build a Warlord-like book that plays differently than the other mages (I found that very difficult).

i have found that the warlord benefits from increased channeling. his better creatures cost quite a bit. so i would recommend a mana flower or two. i think you could lose one of the favors. you have several zone exclusives, and if you put in any mana increase conjurations, you may want to swap for a conjuration in your book. the incants you have several are the low cost which really help conserve mana. that will help too.

- 16 pieces of Equipment and no Battle Forge? You will have a hard time equipping that stuff manually.

- only 2 Removal spells for each equipment and enchantment. How do you want to deal with curses from a Warlock or a full buffed melee mage?

- if you face an aggressive mage you will be in a world of trouble, because you need 3-4 rounds to fire up your engines.

Akiro, I have never prayed to you before. No one will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, or why we died. All that matters is that one stood against many. That's what's important! Valor pleases you, Akiro... so grant me strength! And if you do not listen, then to HELL with you!

Thx for the feedback.

2x Mana Flower: 4 points
1x Battle Forge: 3 points
2x Dissolve (4 total): 4 points
2x Dispel (4 total): 6 points
2x Seeking Dispel (2 total): 6 points
-----------------------------------
23 points to free up. Back to the drawing board...   :-\

How many Dispels/Dissolves are sensible for a Warlord in your view?

If you look at a starting point for a soldiers based warlord, before adding creatues/conjurations etc, are we looking at this?

[spellclass]Conjuration[/spellclass]
[spellclass]Creature[/spellclass]
[/spells]

That leaves 25 points for conjurations/creatures and additional enchantments/incantations. Now the bargaining begins. Do I take only 1 equipment of each with the danger of losing it? No teleport and getting into tanglevine? No Force Crush, but what then as possible finisher? Less Fortified Position, but those enchantments are really great for a soldiers based warlord, which was the aim?

Somehow I find this more difficult than with the other mages.

when you play the anvil thone warlord, you are able to use the cantrip rune on an equipment piece. that rune has "please use me with a wand" printed on it. so my proposal is the mage wand and - if you wand to be flexible with attack spells - an elemental wand too. you can save some points for dispel cards that way.
Akiro, I have never prayed to you before. No one will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, or why we died. All that matters is that one stood against many. That's what's important! Valor pleases you, Akiro... so grant me strength! And if you do not listen, then to HELL with you!

I would consider an ignite in place of a seeking dispel. I mainly use seeking dispel to check for nullies  and this way will save you a point

The reason for ignite is that you can get an effect if there isn't a nullify and you can force the nullify if there is.

One issue with Reveal Magic is that you don't actually get rid of the card.  Another issue is that you still have that "hidden enchantment roulette" trying to find the one that you need to disable.  Granted, the zero cost and novice are pretty sweet perks and I wouldn't discount adding a Reveal Magic to the book.  Just remember that you've spent a sbp and your opponent hasn't lost any.

Puddnhead explained my thoughts well here. I know a lot of players will use reveal magic to great effect. Ignite feels like it has more effectiveness at the end of the day

Yeah Reveal Magic will have its place I'm sure. Downside is it costs 2 spell points and does only prevent the nullify 1 round.

So you'd need 2 actions to cast Reveal Magic followed by a Dissolve for example. Same things does Crumble. for less points.

Or you cast Reveal Magic and then your enchantment for no extra mana, but spending an extra action. With ignite, you have a versatile card, that you can also use in other circumstances, spend only little mana to do either a burn or get completely rid of nullify.

I think there will be cases for both.

Here is another try for the Warlord spellbook.

Idea is to have the Minotaurs raging around with charge +4 (8 dice each) jumping away and back to enemies without being hindered, while the goblins spam corrodes, burns and rot and the Warlord is fortifying their positions. Hopefully the other mage gets through his dispels so that Force Crush can be used to finish him.

I know it now contains more of the standard cards one should always carry, but to be honest, I'm a bit sad this build is not more Warlord like, with Outposts, Altars, Talos, Spiked Pits, Pike Walls, Akiro's Warhammer and more soldiers...

Well, Reveal Magic is only 1 sbp ( novice ) and obviously preventing the Nullify for 1 round is all you're looking for as you'll do whatever you want to do right after it, you're not going to wait until next round, right ? ;)

The fact that it costs zero mana is another aspect that cannot be underestimated as it allows you to be effective with relatively very little mana.

Of course I understand Puddnhead and Coshade's argument about Ignite as well, I've used it myself for the same reason, but in this WL deck Ignite is 2 mana and 2 SBP's ( 2 mana and 1 SBP more that Reveal magic ) and not necessarily an effect ( 33% chance the Burn drops right off )

Just remember that you've spent a sbp and your opponent hasn't lost any.

Can't you say the same thing about the Ignite, only you've spent 2 sbp(s in this case ;)

From a certain point of view, yes.  I don't like relying on burns for that very reason.

The scenario I was actually talking about is that you've spent your Reveal Magic and it goes to your discard.  Their nullify does not.  It will still potentially gain value in a future turn.

If the Ignite hits a Nulllify you don't get your burn effect, but you have destroyed their Nullify 2 sbps for 2 sbps and you're up 2 mana.

In either case you get to use your Dissolve this round, but in the case of the ignite you could potentially use another one on your first quickcast next round whereas with Reveal magic you could not.

I think both spells have their place and will actually come down to spellbook costs and playstyle.

You're right of course. Missed that novice trait.

You make valid points I agree with, Puddnhead, but I was just thinking, ...

Suppose we've discovered a Nullify with our Reveal Magic, can't we somehow "exploit" that knowledge next round ;) like playing a Decoy maybe ... :)
