General Discussion / Re: Paladin vs Siren Spoilers
« on: June 01, 2016, 05:57:19 PM »
Cool.  Sounds like the Siren is the first mage trained in a spell subtype.

This should be interesting.  Well, I'm excited to see what's in the song arsenal.  I'm hoping for more power ballads like this card.

Last night my spouse stole my phone, so I didn't have a copy of the Codex or FAQ accessible... so I made a ruling based on how the game works in general: that is, that damage gets dealt to a creature, then you check to see if damage on that creature exceeds its life, and if so, it is destroyed and removed from play (or the mage loses, in the special case where the creature is a mage).  In general, it would seem that the amount of damage on a creature can briefly exceed the life total of the creature before those values are compared and {destroyed/not destroyed} status of the creature gets updated.

So when asked how much damage a Vampiric creature recovers when dealing "overkill" damage (e.g. 4 damage dealt to a creature that only has 2 "hit points" = life minus damage remaining), I ruled that the Vampiric creature heals 2 damage, since 4 damage was dealt despite the creature only having enough life to survive the first 2 points of damage.  And I was wrong, according to the Codex.  But why is that?  How does the Vampiric trait know how many "hit points" a creature has remaining (e.g. life - damage value)?  Doesn't an attack simply deal damage, then "life - damage = hit points" gets calculated afterwards to see if the creature is destroyed yet?  Or does damage get dealt "one at a time" and a creature never gets the opportunity to have more damage assigned than life?

P.S.  The same should hypothetically apply to Drain Life and other effects that care about how much damage gets dealt.

I look at it like any creature only has so much life to give. So if they were damaged or maybe they're just a small creature, it makes sense to me that only the remaining life could heal you.

That being said, vampirism doesn't feel like a very good card. It's a card that only works when melee attacking a living creature. If you put it on your mage, you must attack to get the effect. Regrowth is much better because it's a passive trait, costs less mana, and is equal spb for dark mages.

General Discussion / Re: All Priestess and Warlock cards spoiled
« on: May 10, 2016, 05:17:45 PM »
Has anyone else noticed that the academy priestess and warlock pay triple for their opposing school's spells even if those spells are novice?

I noticed that the beastmaster pays triple for fire, but it doesn't say "even if novice" in his ability card.

What's up with that?

Page 24 of the academy rule book:

Novice - Basic apprentice spell. All Mages may add Novice spells to their spellbooks for 1 Spell Point, even if they are not trained in that spell’s school of magic

Went back and watched it again.  Great catch Sailor!

General Discussion / Re: Priestess due this month?
« on: May 04, 2016, 12:38:34 PM »
Seems it's been a while since the last spoiler (e.g. on the Facebook page, Father Geek, or here).  Would love to have a peek at some more upcoming cards for the Academy expansions - or perhaps from Lost Grimoire v1, which has had very little fanfare so far.

I imagine we won't hear much about Paladin vs Siren until we have the 2 new Academy mages + Grimoire in hand - aside from the little we've heard so far (like Deptonnes = "shark-men").

I was just thinking about this before you posted.  I'm doubtful that the expansions will be released this month.  Very quiet on AW side for actual release dates.  I wonder how other board game companies are able to put hard release dates and meet that date, but with AW, there's always ambiguity and delay. The way AW released Academy was ridiculous (the original release date turned out to be a partial release).

werekingdom's warlock defeats rant's johktari beastmaster.  Guys, watch out for him, he's bringing the heat!  excellent and very fun match tonight!  Thanks for the game!

Thornlashers can't attack under Iron Guard and Vine snappers only get their weak attack...

They might not be able to hit back, but they sure can take a punch.

General Discussion / Re: New Expansion ? Is original MW dead?!
« on: March 31, 2016, 05:30:48 PM »
I think the focus on Acedemy and Battlegrounds were business mistakes. It lost a lot of momentum wrt committed players. More energy and money should have been spent on new mages, and rapidly expanding the player base with events and tournaments.

Maybe, maybe not. I know that I'm along for the ride. It's been a lot fun for me to see this game change gears, but still retain its world.  Each expansion has changed the game and made it more rewarding. The release cycle might be long for some (and it bothered me when I first got into the game) but it's allowed me to check out other great board games while I wait for the next expansion. There's already enough released currently that you could play an infinite amount of ways. So I'll eagerily await just to see how great this game is going to become. JMO

General Discussion / Re: Academy mage-release order
« on: March 24, 2016, 08:22:16 AM »
Lost Grimore is an Arena product. I believe that is a simple typo. It is not compatible with Academy.

After release, will the Lost Grimore cards be considered tournament legal?

Spellbook Design and Construction / Re: fatigue necromancer

Except that those zombies have bloodthirsty, so if there's a damaged living enemy creature in their zone they'll have to attack it and they won't be able to guard.

Bloodthirsty has its limitations, but hey, it's a cheap way to get six dice out of the brutes.

I really like this book. Seems like a cross between few big and fatigue. I think sailor is correct that this book could use a venomous zombie and a drainsoul.

Another thing I noticed is that you don't run any armor enchants. Brace yourself is a wonderful card whn you think you might take a beating for a round.

One more point I'd like to add, chains of agony is a great card for any blood thirsty book.

I do have one question. I'm seeing more arcane corruptions in dark books lately. Do you find you have the 10 mana to cast it? Ghoul rot and force crush won't leave you much wiggle room.
