Man, it feels like Mom and Dad just told me that I got something really cool for Christmas, but have to wait a whole month to see what it is. Oh well, I can't wait to see how the story unfolds. From what I've seen this world is very fleshed out and much more interesting that I was thinking it'd be.

And if you bad I will tell Santa to bring you a lump of coal instead. :P

Thanks for the input guys!

That gives me a good jump off point.

How many Dispel and Blocks are in the Core Set?

Is there a list somewhere of all the cards in the Core Set?

Thanks,
G

If I get approval I will list the full set count and Spell Tome count, but if one of the Arcane Wonder team does this it will save me some time. Also if it gets approved I will post a copy of the set book for people to download. This would not go up till the release on Thursday Aug 17th.

General Questions / Re: dual wielding?

I see the picture of a Mage Wand

in the rulebook has the slots weapon OR shield. So I assume Elemental Wand has the same slots. Can you have a Mage Wand in one hand and an Elemental Wand in the other? ZZAP BZZZAP!

In the base set we have a few items that use the shield or weapon slot. Remember that you can have 1 item equipped to each slot. On the Elemental Wand

it has Weapon or shield listed. Because they each can go into either slot you could dual wield them.  Remember that you can never have 2 of the same card face up attached to any object in the arena including a mage. But if an item like a long bow

had weapon and shield listed you could not equip any thing else to those slots.

General Questions / Re: Spell Defenses?
« on: August 08, 2012, 03:41:21 PM »
As a reminder attack spells are attack card type so you can use defense to help protect you from them. This is also the reason why Reverse Attack card can help protect you from them.

Marked for Death - Ench. makes all attacks against a target +1 dice
Bear Strength - Gives target +1 melee
Ghoul Rot - Target takes 1 direct damage every upkeep phase

I play with these constantly, no matter what spellbook I run. Ghoul Rot is crazy good on a mage, Marked for Death as well. It's basically like playing Bear Strength on every creature that chooses to attack the mage, so there's a lot of bang for your buck.

Another thing you can look for is the sweeping trait (It allows creature to attack 2 things with one action. It I believe that this trait made it to the final version of the game. Its name may have been changed. Look in the glossery of the rule book. I cant do it because I am at work currently. Sorry) This can be a huge life saver if you are getting swarmed in  smaller waves.

As I stated before here ( http://magewars.com/jsite/forum/general-discussion/132-average-game-time ) Its your job as a Mage to try to anticipate what kind of tools yours opponents will try to use. 120 points was more than enough to plan ahead. My average build was about 90-95 points and 25-30 points of meta cards. (about 8-12 cards) As soon as the round starts you would know what mage your opponent is using. Then you go into the first planning phase....  Just pic the tools that help you best in any match when you go to build.

General Questions / Re: Forgetting Enchantments

Yes!  You will need to do that to remember how much it will cost to reveal them too.

I suggest that if you place an enchantment on an enemy creature, that you place the card so that it sticks out more on your side of the board.  That way it is easy to determine who's who if both players have enchantments on the same creature.

If your opponent places an enchant on a creature you previously enchanted they should do the same so that both players know what belongs to them. Your always free to look at what you placed face down but not what your opponent has face down.

I'd like to see a mind spell called something like slow time. It would be a mage only spell and probably with a high mana cost. You could either play it as a quick spell in your final quickcast phase when you had the initiative this turn, and the effect would be that in the next round you keep the initiative. You could also cast it as a full spell, in that case right after it you could do two additional actions. So the mage casts it, and two of his creature could move/attack.

I had talked to Byran a few months back about something similar for a future release but we both agreed it would need some heavy testing. If all goes well you may see it by this time next year.

how did you set a tourney up?  Were you allowed to change spells in between matches?  Also did you know what your next opponent was before you faced them?

The only public official tournaments that have been run are at apprentice level. This is a preset book that is used for the demo and contains about 30 spells. The books were given out randomly to each player. There were no changing out spells between rounds (I expect this rule will stay in place to keep the rounds following.)

Its your job as a Mage to try to anticipate what kind of tools yours opponents will try to use. 120 points was more than enough to plan ahead. My average build was about 90-95 points and 25-30 points of meta cards. As soon as the round starts you would know what mage your opponent is using. Then you go into the first planning phase. Because of this I dont see why it would matter what the other player is playing. Just pic the tools that help you best in any match when you go to build. ( check this out of some common build cards http://magewars.com/jsite/forum/spellbook-design-and-construction/134-list-of-common-spells-needed ) or to continue this It should be moved to the League and tourney play section here http://magewars.com/jsite/forum/league-tournament-play

Alternative Play / Re: Thoughts on a Tournament setup?

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of single round elimination at all. Especially for a new game, I think its important to have players play as much as they can at a tournament - win or lose. It'd be great if there were achievement awards or some kind of participation awards that the lower ranked players could earn during a tournament.

Whats most important is letting people play and having fun. The best thing to do is once the League kit is offered players will start being able to affect the game world and see the story unfold. This should be another thing that will bring people in.
