I will definitely be building a spellbook for this guy. Amazing artwork, and amazing rules. My only problem is now which Warlord will be my favorite.

Would the sacrificial altar's sacrifice count for the graveyard's extra mana ability when a creature is destroyed?

Custom Cards / Invocation: Lob
« on: January 26, 2014, 01:46:21 AM »
How about:

Name: Lob
School: War 1
Type: Invocation
Mana Cost: 4
Target: Creature

Text: Target's next ranged attack gains the Indirect trait.

A pretty simple idea. Lob would give shut-in mages something to do/a way to be struck.

Being a Dark caster means that you have access to a lot of cheap curses which you might want to add. Agony and Ghoul Rot are particular favorites, and Death Link can be very useful.

Mages / Re: Why the Malakai Priest isn't very good.
« on: January 24, 2014, 03:31:26 AM »
At the moment, the worst thing about the Priest is the limited card pool that he's got to work from. He's not the greatest mage in the game, sure, but I don't think he's the worst either.

Give it some time and I'm sure his play style will start to become more individualized.

Even at Triple cost, you can include 2x Maim Wings for the same spellbook points as one Force Hold.

Not quite. Force Hold would cost 4 where a Maim Wings is 3 on it's own. But you do have a point, and that point is I shouldn't just dismiss the Dark out of hand. I'll give the Maim Wings a try.

A few points:

--Priestess is objectively better than Priest.  Would a holy warrior-ess appeal? ; )

I've got no problems with a butt-kicking woman, but the Priestess can't light people on fire with her holy light, which was kind of the purpose of why I built this spellbook.

Quote
--Four Pillar of Lights seems excessive, particularly with two Hurl Boulders..  Recommendation: replace two with Blinding Flash (or even a non-attack spell).

Fair point. The boulders are there for when I need some heavy hitting potential and I wanted enough pillars to use as low cost Malakai's Fire devices. I intend to keep the guardian angel and maybe the Holy Avenger (usually a Knight of Westlock) with the priest, marching into the enemy's forces so I didn't want to hit them with the Blinding Flash.

Quote
--Force Hold seems an odd choice: high in spellbook points, and in casting cost as well.  Recommendation: go Tanglevine.  You swap Teleport escape for Disenchant escape, and it's less mana.

Force Hold is in here mostly to deal with a big flier like Adramelech, which Tanglevine doesn't help with. The Enchanter's Wardstone also helps keep it in play as much as my buff enchantments. I'd use Main Wings but, well, Priest. If there were other suggestions I would be VERY open. Upkeep 3 is a pain.

Quote
--Aggression builds like this one rarely want to bother Harmonizing anything.  You want to make sure you keep your Tempo up.

Yeah. I initially intended to open with Battleforge+Harmonize but after some playtesting it just feels better to use the amulet and I never really found a good time to use Harmonize after starting to be on the go. Harmonize out.

Quote
--The only thing Hawkeye helps is your mage's attack spells.  Best replace it with something else.

Yeah, my hope was to use this and Dawnbreaker Ring to make 4 dice Pillar's of Light but it is VERY situation contingent and helps nothing else. Hawkeye out.

Quote
--Lay on Hands is usually not worth the spellbook cost, and usually overheals.  Note, in case you missed it, that you can't use it to heal your mage.

I know it can't target the Priest. I just thought it would be nice to have an emergency heal/cleanse for a defender and it only costs 1 more than a regular Heal. Although, Heal also CAN target the Priest so that's something to think about. You're probably right though that I should probably swap Lay on Hands.

Quote
--Either add a Mana Crystal, or replace your Amulet with it.  With your chosen opening, a Crystal is one less mana.

With the Armor Ward I figured it would be safer to keep the channeling bonus on myself, but if I drop the crystal/flower in my starting zone and they peel off stuff to go after it rather than fighting me I'm either already in a bad way or they are. I'll give it a swap out.

Quote
--You really should add at least one Regrowth for your mage, and either Leather or Eagleclaw Boots.

Well I should have room for this now.

Quote
The staff is just so amazing for a battle priest that your opponent will likely dissolve it and you are likely going to miss it.

It IS great. Usually I get Armor Ward up so they'll be spending a lot of mana to burn the staff. The Priest's basic attack does light damage as well, so I can keep up the Malakai's Fire, though at 2 less dice. I just don't know if I've got the mana to case a second staff. I'll look to toss one in though if I can find the points.

Thanks very much for the input! I've got some tweaking to do and then I'll drop it back in here.

Spellbook Design and Construction / Holy Fire Priest

I love the idea of the holy warrior archetype using his wrathful vengeance to engulf his enemies and have accordingly built up just such a spellbook. I've only had the opportunity to try this once at this point and it seems to work as intended.

Mage: Priest

Attack: 12 points

Hurl Boulder x2
Pillar of Light x4

Conjuration: 9 points

Battle Forge
Enchanter's Wardstone x2
Hand of Bim-Shalla

Creature: 16 points

Brogan Bloodstone
Guardian Angel
Highland Unicorn
Knight of Westlock x2

Enchantment: 31

Armor Ward
Bear Strength x2
Circle of Fire
Divine Protection x2
Force Hold
Harmonize
Hawkeye
Healing Charm x2
Nullify x2
Rhino Hide x2

Equipment: 17

Colossus Belt
Dawnbreaker Ring
Dragonscale Hauberk
Elemental Cloak
Enchanter's Ring
Gauntlets of Strength
Moonglow Amulet
Ring of Asyra
Staff of Asyra
Wand of Healing

Incantation: 35

Dispel x2
Dissolve x2
Force Push x2
Group Heal
Heal
Lay on Hands
Minor Heal x2
Perfect Strike x1
Power Strike x1
Seeking Dispel x2
Teleport x2

Total Spell Points: 120

This is a battle priest build, intended to wade into the fray alongside his protectors. Right now, I've got two opening strategies in mind, depending on how aggressive I believe the opponent will be.

If build up.

Starting Mana: 19
Turn 1: Battleforge + Moonglow Amulet
Mana: 15 + 1 from Battleforge
Turn 2: Enchanter's Ring (from Battleforge) + Guardian Angel + Rhino Hide (on angel, hidden)

If aggressive.

Starting Mana: 19
Turn 1: Guardian Angel + Moonglow Amulet
Mana: 11
Turn 2: Battleforge + Rhino Hide (on angel, hidden)

That's it in a nutshell. Any comments or critiques would be appreciated.

Hello Mage Wars community. Finally having been accepted into your ranks here, I'd like to introduce myself.

I found out about Mage Wars through The Dice Tower and was instantly hooked. I started playing Magic back when Legends was just ending and The Dark was coming out and managed to keep at it for a few years before the constant drain on my finances made the game an unviable option for me. I've been back several times (mostly Magic Online) and spent a few years with the Legend of the 5 Rings CCG. Ultimately, the constant need to keep spending all of my hard earned money to keep up with the constant outflow was just too much. But now I find Mage Wars and in all honesty I think that this is a far superior game in every aspect save that it hasn't been around as long and isn't as well known.

I was instantly drawn to the Warlock and all his in-your-face type of play (I played B/U or B/R in Magic and Shadowlands/Spider Clan in L5R) and have also been drawn to Malakai's Priest and the Warlord. Quite, frankly, I also want to try the Johktari Beastmaster, Forcemaster, Necromancer, Wizard ... you get the idea.

My work schedule means that I don't really get to bring my game to my local game store and play nearly as much as I'd like, so over the last few weeks I've been forcibly roping my friends into playing to various degrees of success but I know when I'm starting to overstep my boundaries when lo and behold I see about the answer to my prayers, OCTGN. My username there is the same as here, svvcDark, and I'd like to thank user Gizzu for being kind enough to walk me though the ropes of my first game with someone not in my game group.

My normal playing buddy plays Necromancer, and I find that as he gets more familiar with the game out games are getting much more difficult on me. Such is the way of things, I suppose, I guess I'll just have to get better myself.

Random fact about me: I've only broken a bone one time, but it was two bones in three different places when it happened. I don't recommend it.

I like in California, USA in the San Francisco Bay Area if there's anyone else close to me who would like to try to get together for a game some time.

Ok, I think I've gone on long enough. Thanks preemptively for being a friendly group.

Long live Mage Wars.
