Title: Elusive Domination
Post by: BigL16 on November 10, 2015, 10:55:24 AM
Hi Everyone,

Long time lurker here with a strategy question.  My play group has recently got into Domination and are all really enjoying it.  Especially when our numbers are uneven.  After a few games, our group has concluded that Elusive seems to be a very powerful trait once all the Sslaks have been taken care of.

My question is this: what valid counters are there to the Elusive trait?  Especially if it is a natural trait for the creature e.g. Cerevere.  The best I can think of is to prevent the creature(s) from getting to the zone with walls and pushes or other board control.  Other than that, I feel they can sneak by and pop orbs at will.

Are there differing opinions on the potency of Elusive in Domination matches?

Natural Elusive will get a lot of hate real quick and when it is bolted on you dispel it. The Druids Vine Markers hinder regardless....

I would recommend killing the creature, especially Cervere, since very few people actually prepare defenses in Domination games.

As a second option you could just out creature your opponent and that way get the last action every round to take the orb back.

Thirdly,[mwcard=MWBG1E04]V'Tar Force Sentry[/mwcard] will keep the creature away (although, not Cervere unless you also hinder with terrain or vines).

I forgot that Vines can hinder Elusive creatures (i.e. Elusive only ignores enemy creatures).

Rajah is another naturally elusive creature in the Beastmaster/Druid's arsenal - although he doesn't have built-in Fast, so he is easier to deal with via Push/Teleport effects (assuming you Dispel/Dissipate any Cheetah Speed).

Other annoying Elusive+Fast creatures include Bitterwood Foxes and/or Thunderrift Falcons with Panther Stealth, the latter of which avoids hindering from Vines.  And Panther Stealth (and Mongoose Agility) are cheap/abundant enough that they'll drain you of your Dispels/Dissipates. (Of course, a lot of Attack Spells should be able to take care of a Thunderrift Falcon or Bitterwood Fox... assuming you don't roll like crap... and assuming no Etherian Lifetree, etc).  But in a multiplayer game, you have the problem of "if I combat the Fast/Elusive creature, my other opponent gains the benefits without paying the costs associated with dealing with said creature."

Your opponent can just pass until remaining unactivated creatures are equal. and then we're playing tether ball :)

Yup, but they will have to go before you do if you have more creatures.  And your "extra" creatures can advance your position while your opponent stalls for the orb grab.  Using those creatures to kill his/her creatures or take even more orbs is going to net you the victory.  All you need is one more orb than your opponent one time and the rest can be equal.

You have a good point.  In a two-player game especially.  Things get a bit muddier when a 3rd player is involved as well :)

Walls will block non-flying elusive creatures.

Thank you for these.  Very good suggestions.

...Elusive only ignores enemy creatures...

Does this mean they should be hindered by the terrain on Domination tiles??

Absolutely

Hmmm.... I'll have to put a big asterisk next to Louis's win.   ::)
(actually, I'm not sure it mattered as he generally moved through the zones without terrain - plus he exceeded the required V'tar total by a decent margin)

Haha, I don't think it's necessary either.  That wolf earned the win fair and square.
