Spellbook Design and Construction / Re: Online spell book builder?
« on: May 25, 2013, 11:57:41 PM »
Hi guys,

I just made a post about my deck builder I made for myself for my iPad. It works great and I was hoping to release it but just got word that it will not happen. It also worked on Android and Windows. Here is more info. Just thought you might be interested while you wait: :)

Hi guys,

Just got word from AW that I can't release my iPad spellbook builder. I initially created it for my own personal use but since it worked so well I wanted to release it as an app. I only mention it because I had spoken to some of you guys and I told you I was trying to get it released. I am sharing just to show you guys what I have working since you won't get to see it). Here are some of the features I added hopeing to release it. Don't hate on the design as all the artwork is placeholder which a professional artist and animator had started on replacing for me (see notes on this below).

1. Extremely fast to build a spellbook. One figer tap on a card adds one copy of the card to the to the deck. two fingers removes it. You can literally build the example spellbooks in under a minute.  This is great for verifying someones spellbook in a very quick fashion to make sure they are not cheating (or simply that they can add an multiple properly)
2. Generates an alphanumberic code which will regenerate your spellbook inside of the app so you can easily share your book with someone. Also you can email it or post a link to twitter. This was my favorite as sharing spellbooks is Awesome but almost impossible currently as it would take forever.
3. Cards you can't add to your deck (Because of your selected Mage are faded out so you can still see them but your aren't distracted by them.
4. You can filter by everything on the card. Damage type, attribute, cost, benefit, (if it is on the card you can filter by it).
5. You can see detailed statistics showing how much each type of cards were costing you. (i.e Creatures, equipment, etc).
6. Each card displays the number included and the total cost.
7. You can just show your spellbook so you can quickly see your cards and remove any you don't want.
8. Resizable grid to any size and very fast vertical scrolling.

Stuff not shown in the screenshots and notes
- I had newer photos of work I had done but have lots motivation and for other reason (see next item) I can't release.  as it will never see the light of day. That includes the filters shown are just the basic ones. I have a detailed sub menu showing these. Also this build it doesn't show the selected mage and uses a gesture to switch between them.
- I have a much better interface but was working with an artist and animator on a conditional release and cannot show his work since we were unable to get permission to release the app. It had some really neat effects and much better icons.
- It also runs on Android and Windows.
- I haven't shown the alphanumeric generator. I spent a lot of time on making sure the spellbooks could be generated in as few characters as possible so you could write it down without too much effort and I didn't want to give any of this away. I am sure someone could do it to just I thought I did some neat work in this area.

Notes: please note I really like mage wars and would like to have released this but I am in no way bitter or angry, (maybe a bit sad :) ,  I just wanted to show you guys what I have done because it is really great to use and really helps me develop better spellbooks on my iPad.

So here are a few images with my prototype artwork:

That is what I thought but previous comments seemed to indicate there are. :) But I see now that is not what was said. I should know as I have went over every card billions of times by now!

Thanks!

Thanks fro the detailed descriptions Arcanus! This clears up legondary creatures but now I am confused about unique creatures based on your description. Any detail on "Unique" creatures as I am now struggling to see where that fits.

@Darth,

I think what you are saying makes some sense (especially the plains of wolfs example) but as I mentioned once it gets beat up so bad it is destroyed and sent back to the other plane why would it be totally ok the next minute when it is summoned again? I am guessing somone is going to say "when it is summoned it gets a new corporal form blah blah blah..." but it seems silly but then again you have to give up disbelief somewhere. I guess this is a point where it seems like it really messes with the balance of the game. Especially if you know someones deck ahead of time.

Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wtf?

I have been playing for a while and just realized Legondary means one in play INCLUDING the other player. (Yes I see the rules are clear Legondary vs Unique so I am not arguing that is not clear) This is one of the few rules I have found in MW that seems just silly. If you played beastmaster vs beastmaster this would be a pretty big deal to not be able to pull out the ferret or the forced shadow. Can anyone provide a real reason why this would be in the game as it seems only to make the rules convoluted. Why does one mage summing a legendary creature make him unavoidable to another? If you want to use the defense that the creature is unique in all existence and therefore can only be summoned one at a time then you shouldn't be able to summon him/it again after it is destroyed because well he would be destroyed. I completely understand the need for balance but this seems to unbalance things strongly.

This sounds like an awesome plan and I am not sure I would have thought about it. Great job!

Those look pretty nice. Is there any chance of getting premium binders like those from Monster Protectors with mage wars themes? I currently use their 4 card versions which are great because they hold 160 cards and they side load so there is no more flipping past the page you want when you get half way through. Also they protect the cards much better.

Your sooo mean shadow with you spoiler box filled with nothing. :)

Is it really that odd to be surprised he didn't have a horse when nothing else about his costume make you think he should have spurs? To be honest they seem a bit out of place like they were tacked on so I thought surely they must me for something. Oh wait maybe it will be a new melee attack "Spurs to the Face" Piercing +3!!! I have figured it out!

@Cross,

I go over that way a fair bit so I know how far it is! Hopefully you will make it often as the weekly events are great but the Monthly ones are even better! Send me your email on private message and I will notify you of organized play when I get that started.

First I would like to say that I love love LOVE the Mage Wars artwork and especially some of the new artwork in the expansion. But on some of the new cards the artist appears to be dialing it in.

Examples:
Dwarf Kriegsbiel: Really? I see the artist wanted him to look like he is charging and swinging hard but he appears to be laying on a couch holding his axe out to turn off the lightswitch on the wall behind him.  Very unnatural looking.
Helm of Command: The proportions look very strange and nothing like the helm worn by the warlock in his photo. The bottom section looks so wide and streched like the artist just forgot how to draw perspective.
Akiro's Hammer: Looks good but it appears the card was never finished as all the textures are blurry as can be.
Goblin grunt: He appears to be at the gym in step class and pointing at someone who just came in the room.
Orc Butcher: The striking arm appears to have been moved in photoshop after it was drawn because it doesn't match the pose of the rest of the body. The face looks really silly too.
Sir Coraxin, Blademaster: WOW!! It looks like a combination of Chuck Noris and Tinker Bell from peter pan. He appears to be using his fingers to hold the blade in his left hand. Also he has the muscle definition of a 12 year old in his right arm despite his left arm showing a decent amount.

This is such a shame that these card were clearly done have @$$ because they really distract from what otherwise is an amazing add on. For example mind control, Mass Sleep, Goblin Bomber, Goblin Builder, Goblin Slinger, Mind Shield and Sniper Shot are some of the best looking cards in the entire game. :woohoo:  While I have come to expect great artwork and I understand every card can't be a knockout I really wish you would make sure your artists aren't throwing out some extremely poor cards just to save time. :(  :(  :(  :(  :(  :(  :(  :(  :(  :(  :(  :(
