General Discussion / Re: MW arena update 2020
« on: December 26, 2019, 09:22:10 AM »
I don't have any exact information what is coming to MW arena the year 2020, but at Facebook they promised something. That is enough for me to believe this development is going on...
I know creating something completely NEW takes a lot of testing, and after so many years I don't mind waiting a few months more. It might be monk/elementalist suited for arena?
Or something completely new?

You made me look, but I don't see any recent (since April 2019) posts related to MW at either the Arcane Wonders or Mage Wars Facebook pages.

It's in the comments for the post about "Foundations of Rome" from 18th december on the Arcane wonders FB-page. "We've been listening and we have big plans coming for Mage Wars that we will be announcing during 2020"

It sounds like more than just a Lost Grimore vol. 2 or similar. I think that there is a market for a second edition of MW, with some changes from the original game, making it a bit more "accessable". But I think that's too much to hope for. So maybe it's a new Mage vs. mage-set, like Monk vs. Elementalist for arena.

Strategy and Tactics / Re: Niche Animal tactics
« on: December 08, 2019, 06:26:43 AM »
Thanks to this thread, I put together two decks yesterday. One based on the Feral bobcat, and one on the Emerald Tegu. Tho, both decks are very similar to decks I've played with before.

The bobcat was the first spell I added more copies of after my first game of MW, so you could say it was my first favourite card. It's still one of my favs among the animals. I think the bobcat has great potential as a pet. If it gets melee attacked and miss the def roll, it will probably survive and maybe be able to get a second chance with the def during the next round. And with a pet, you don't have to worry about the Bobcats worst enemy, the Hurl rock. If you quick cast the cat and then move to an adjecent zone with an enemy and then rouse the cat, you can get a cheap extra 6 dice attack. The plan is to cast some charge +1 conjurations during the game, so those extra rouse attacks will increase in power during the game. If all your cats die, you can hopefully finish the game thanks to an almost free Slavörg with good charge bonus. But in the end, you can think about removing all your Bobcats from the deck and replace them with Falcons instead…

The idea with the Tegu is to make the enemy mage die from rot dmg mostly. There are a lot of cheap enchantments for minor creatures that can help you. I'm using Fellella to cast those. My base strategy is to enchant the Tegu with Akiro's favor and Badger frenzy, just to help you get those rots on the enemy fast. Use sanguine thirst for healing. There are a lot of spells nowdays that can give you extra counterstrikes, like Defend, Reprisal, Defend me, Packleader's Cowl. That means more rot and more vampire healing. I also have some counters against necro, since rot won't work.

General Discussion / Re: Pillar of Righteous Flame - Discussion

Wouldn't the best nerf be to add an additional mana cost for all attacks after the initial one? Maybe 2 mana for each attack? 2 mana for 4 dice (or more) are still very good. If you use force push to get an attack on an opponent creature, you pay 5 mana for 4+ dice and effect, just like an attack spell. The pillar would still be a very fun tactical card to use for more aggressive short term goals. Temple of light would of course be a more flexible choice and it can theoretically stay in play for the rest of the game, but it isn't super good economy-wise. If the extra attacks from the pillar would cost 2 mana, we would hopefully see less of the pillars in non-holy decks, and maybe we will see more Tempe of light in holy decks. More variation is good for the game.

If you only increase the initial casting cost of the pillar, you will get rid of some of the "must have in every deck" problem. But the risk of negative game experiences (the skeleton swarm for example) would still be a problem. It's the same problem if you make it higher level or holy only.

Hi guys!

After about one year away from MW, I have the ambition to get back on octgn and play a few games soon. I was planning to try and play a bit more aggressive than before, hoping I would enjoy the game more overall. So this is kind of bad news for me. This game didn't need more annoying spells if you ask me. But I guess I will accept the challange to try and beat those super economy decks. The more the odds are against you, the more fun it is when you finally win. :)

I still think that I prefer to play Domination over standard Arena nowdays, because Domination delivers more enjoyment per minute than Arena (usually), and the meta is much more "open" in Domination, if you see what I mean.

Rant over... See you in the arena!

I absolutely love the first two. Keep 'em coming! That facial expression of the bear(?)... That's how I look most of the time when I play MW. You could easily make 100 awesome memes out of that picture.

Rules Discussion / Re: Domination guarding rules

The vigilant trait is pretty sweet with respect to domination.

Yeah! Noble Vanguard was already one of my favourite creatures in Arena. Really looking forward to try him in domination...

So basically it's the same rules as standard MW. That make sense. I thought there was some difference in the rules between standard MW and domination, because many opponents didn't allow me to guard neutral orbs, and also said that Sslaks only care to guard the orbs and not my creatures. Next time that happens, I can just say they're wrong, and refer to this thread. Thanks!  :)

Rules Discussion / Domination guarding rules
« on: August 10, 2017, 09:32:14 AM »
I know there are some old threads about some of these questions, but I thought that it would be good to collect all the answers at the same place. Also, some rule interpretations could have changed over they years. Maybe the answers can be added to the (now empty) Domination FAQ that you can find here on the forums: http://forum.arcanewonders.com/index.php?board=107.0

1. Can my creature guard a neutral orb?

2. Can my creature guard an enemy controlled orb? (Think 3p free for all)

3. Can my creature guard a neutral Sslak?

4. Can my creature guard an opponent controlled object? (Think 3p free for all)

5. Can a neutral Sslak guard a player's object?

6. Can a neutral Sslak guard another neutral Sslak? (If there are 2 guardians in the zone, and only one has a guard marker. Do I have to attack the one with the guard marker?)

I think I know the answer to some of the questions, but not all of them. The fiddly rules around guarding have always annoyed me while playing Domination, and it has taken away a lot of the joy in Domination. I hope this will change now. :)

Rules Discussion / Re: Moving and force hold
« on: June 27, 2017, 12:55:04 PM »
I guess you can have your opponent's creature pay 1 mana for suppression orb, and then reveal force hold to prevent it from actually moving, since it happens during the "pay costs" step. But what about chains of agony? Is that also a part of "pay costs"?

Congratulations to Keejchen on his victory today! There were some technical difficulties with the recording, but thanks to Mr. Keejchen we have a backup recording. I will re-commentate and post to the Arcane Duels channel this week. Sorry for the delay everyone!
So who played what and how?

I played FM and played her bad. :P
