If you are patient, it's a great strategy.

However, you are right. It makes for a long game, which means you might have a hard time getting friends to play against you.  :P

Don't be afraid to post your build and discuss some specifics.

IMO: There seem to be two basic classes of spell in the game:
1) Persistent and Mana efficient
2) Instant and Mana inefficient

Ex: (1) The first round you summon a Wolf, you're down 9 mana and haven't really gained anything. However, every round it can hit for 4 dice. After 4 rounds of attacks you've dealt 16 dice of damage for only 9 Mana, a pretty good ratio. The longer you keep it alive, the more mana-efficient it is. The same can be said for Enchantments, Conjurations and other persistent cards. In order to counter persistent cards, you need to destroy them so that their effects don't add up over time.

Ex: (2) A Fireball is a fast but inefficient source of damage. For 8 mana you get to roll 6 dice and a chance to Burn. This happens right away, but it actually deals less damage than its Mana cost. The chance that you inflict a Burn, and the chance that it stays on, decreases rapidly with every additional round. Instant cards include Attacks, Incantations, and one-time abilities. They are highly mana-inefficient, but rather more difficult to counter. (you can only have so many Jinxes, Blocks and Nullifies)

Theoretically speaking, an ideal mana drain deck should emphasize destroying persistent cards, and not worry too much about countering instant cards. (your opponent won't have enough mana to cast them)

So I came up with a build designed to drain mana while countering enemy creatures and equipment:
Wizard - trained in Lightning
Essence Drain x4, Mana Siphon for mana leech
Mordok's and Suppression Orb for countering swarm tactics
Hawkeye + Lightning Ring + Thunderbolt (bound) for single target DPS
Dissolve spam for countering Equipment-heavy mages
(Optional) Battle Forge and a ton of Equipment for direct combat

Equipment: 14
Mage Wand
Elemental Wand
Staff of the Arcanum
Arcane Ring
Lightning Ring
Leather Boots
Leather Gloves
Regrowth Belt
Moonglow Amulet
Suppression Cloak

Conjurations: 15
Mana Crystal x2
Battle Forge
Mordok's Obelisk
Suppression Orb
Mana Siphon

Creatures: 7
Mana Leech x2
Huginn, Raven Familiar

Enchantments: 37
Decoy x2
Hawkeye
Harmonize x3
Nullify x6
Rhino Hide
Circle of Lightning
Reverse Magic x2
Jinx x2
Agony x2
Essence Drain x4
Teleport Trap x2

Incantations: 33
Sleep
Teleport
Force Push
Knockdown
Banish
Drain Power
Dispel x2
Dissolve x4
Steal Enchantment
Seeking Dispel
Purge Magic

Attacks: 14
Jet Stream
Geyser
Lightning Bolt
Thunderbolt
Chain Lightning x2

have u play it. The way I doing is locking down there mana early then cast a hydra to win. There mage has no mana and can't move away from the hydra.

Why not run more Whirling Spirit they are going to give you a free push 40% of the time and they make the opponent deal with them, if force push worth it?

I'm hoping to take Piousflea's deck for a spin tomorrow. I'm really curious to see how a virtually creatureless build works out.

So after playing my mana drain / equipment build a bit I realized it is the most effective as a pure creatureless build. I got rid of the mana leeches and changed up a few cards to have more teleports and sleeps.

Keeping Huginn (the one and only creature) alive is tremendously important to the otherwise creatureless build. With the ability to peek at enemy enchantments you can consistently land Dissolves (because you won't waste any on nullify) while building up a massive equipment advantage. Once you have a bunch of essence drains and way more equipment than your foe, you throw on Hawkeye + elemental wand with Thunderbolt and nuke like crazy.

It is important to save your really good equipment (suppression cloak and wands) until you really need them because otherwise you'll get Dissolved. Nullifies can keep your equipment intact to some extent, but can be countered with decoys or seeking dispels.

You could also do an effective nuke build with Fire specialization but I like Thunderbolt because its 3 range means that your opponent can't outrage you. As long as your in the center of the map you can reach the entire map with Thunderbolt.

This is a nice deck but 2 things
1 - I would include Gorgon
---- Having a ranged presence is important and she is self sufficient with her personal regen, not to mention her weakness stacking can help nullify potential high damage threats
2 - I would remove Jinx
---- I see Jinx being a delay spell, I feel its designed for rush decks which this really isn't. Since they get both the spell and the mana back, there was really no benefit to you.

You say you've been winning with this?  I don't mean this to sound critical, but I'm not seeing how you are doing the damage?  Three damaging creatures, and mana denial.  Are your creatures doing most of the damage?  Just curious how the games typically play out.  I can see how they wouldn't have a chance to get out much of their own, so it could work, but having a hard time wrapping my mind around it.

My thoughts exactly.  If this build actually wins, it must take AGES to finish someone.  Way too much mana denial focus IMO.  If he had a couple of Walls of Fire and/or Poison Gas Cloud and/or Traps, I'd say he's doing his damage via that...but he doesn't.  Plus, with all the pushes and lock down cards it would seem like going with Gorgon Archers would make more sense than the Hydras.

I guess his strategy is to push everything into the Hydra's and/or lock them down in the same zone as the Hydra's and have them just munch everyone up.  But that seems like a fragile strategy.  What happens when the Hydra's are killed or neutralized in some way?
