General Discussion / Re: Battlegrounds Domination Release Update
« on: July 14, 2015, 05:37:15 PM »
I just want to take a moment and say thank you to everyone.  I, personally, was very concerned about this message.  As most of you know, I came to Arcane Wonders to work, leaving a steady corporate job, as I believe in Mage Wars, and I believe in Aaron and Bryan, our design team.  I love Mage Wars, and it's my favorite game of all time, but it does my heart good to hear all the positive feedback, both here, and in the emails we've received from making the announcement on our newsletter.

We have an amazing community, and yes, we work 100%+ for everyone out there.  We know we're not WOTC with multitudes of finance and designers, but we believe Mage Wars offers something no other games offer in the space, true strategic gameplay without the luck of the draw.

I can't thank you all enough for the support, the love, and the comradery during this time.  While yes, we are pretty dissapointed with this issue, and not being able to have this on your tables as planned, it's tremendous to hear that so many of you believe in what we do.

Thank you all!

I'm Toxziq and I like warm /hugs!

Keep up the good work, we're all counting on you.

Mages / Re: Who's the hardest Mage to get right?
« on: July 02, 2015, 05:35:08 AM »
It took me 3 different spell book builds with the druid before I got it how I wanted it to play. I normally find spend 2 rounds prepping, dropping mana crystals, lairs, ect. then by round 3 you should be able to cast a high lvl spell or big creature.

Or you can do what my warlock build does and mana starve yourself round 1 so round 2 you can bring at adramalech.

Mmmm, tasty druids. Galvitar hungers!!  ;D

Mages / Re: Wizards who pay triple
« on: June 29, 2015, 12:32:38 PM »
As a forcemaster player, I find that playing wizards is the toughest match up for me. The way my mage functions is to kill you quickly so the "kill the wizard tower with force hammer" is a strategy that still works for my opponent since that spell wasn't aimed at him so he lives that much longer. Also, alot of wizard books pack 2 or more towers so it just comes out again and I just spend 9 mana to kill a 7 mana object using my of my precious actions to do it (or I failed to kill it by rolling poorly).

When I played in the Gencon 14 tournament, 3 of the top 4 were wizards (out of 24 players in total tourney). Yes the winner was a Beastmaster but the sheer number of wizards and the fact they took 75% of the top 4 slots is indicative that they are very strong (won't say overpowered but definitely the meta has them over many other mages). Unfortunately nothing will be done as the errata of Arcane Wonders won't go that far but hopefully more spells come out that allow for more utility and counters for other mages to catch up.

Some thoughts from a long-time Forcemaster:

-Charm loses it's utility quite a bit if you are running a buddy build since they can just attack your creature. When running solo, they can guard. I find Charm's uses rather limited unless I build around it (mongoose and hope it doesn't get dispelled).

-Take either the grizzly or the vampire. I find it is too expensive in spell points to be paying triple for creatures I might only cast one of. I like to use Devouring Ooze as my only buddy because it is resilient plus can heal itself which makes it self-sufficient, also it has corrode which will either add more damage directly on lightly armored targets or reduce the armor of high armor targets allowing my galvitar to double swing away for greater effect. Slow doesn't matter as much with the pull ability of the FM who can guide it or the enemy to it's clutches. Finally it is level 3 so you save 3 points as opposed to a level 4 critter.

-More Force Hammers. I attach to my Thoughtspore and go to town. Or just wait until they are low then finish them off. The range 2 helps in case my opponent wants to run away while low on health, he can't run far enough to escape me.

For me, the FM is the ultimate rush mage. You either win fast/early or you lose if the game gets to medium/late. Everything you do should be in the mind of getting in your opponents face and making them spend their actions REACTING to you. Since most mages run more creatures, they will be steadily building up an action advantage so you need to get them off their game before that advantage becomes too much. Personally, swarms don't bother me too much since they usually utilize a spawn point. If I see my opponent cast Lair, Barracks, Graveyard etc I feel pretty good about my odds since they just expended a mass amount of mana on something that will not protect them in the short term. Use your built in defense and life gain/regen (sunfire amulet or regen belt) to prolong your life and hope to kill them before they can kill you. Usually it works out fairly well.

I'll give you my input as a forcemaster. I love to see my opponent start with barracks + construction yard. Then you follow up with an archer tower and maybe one creature? This start will get eaten alive by an aggressive build as put forward by forcemaster (on you turn 2-3 at latest) or warlock beatdown.

You'll need to figure out an efficient start when facing a hyperaggressive rush spellbook as there are many in the meta these days. That is one of the weaknesses of MW at the moment, that there is often very little time to build up with a slower playing mage (like a warlord) before you're getting sliced and diced and burned.

Spellbook Design and Construction / Re: Forcemaster deck
« on: September 01, 2014, 01:19:24 PM »
Get rid of Moktari. You can't rely on being in that one zone for the whole game so you will not be reaping it's benefit much. Regrowth belt or regrowth enchant are less mana intensive and more reliable and since regen does not stack, Moktari is redundant.

Agree with posters above, you need to focus more with the forcemaster. The preferred build is to equip up and then slash your opponent to ribbons quickly. I have been trying to see if a creature focused forcemaster would work but with the cards available it is difficult.

Spellbook Design and Construction / Re: Gorilla
« on: September 01, 2014, 01:16:10 PM »
Indeed, a single creature is usually easily taken out of the equation if not supported. Some quick examples include:
Banish
Quicksand
Force Hold/Crush
Fumble (short term solution)
Stumble (short term movement solution)
Mind Control (thanks for the awesome creature)
Enfeeble (slowed to a crawl and easily kited)
Defenses to negate 50% of his attacks
Forcefield to shrug them all off
Etc etc

Ultimately you need to have more than just one way to finish off your opponent. Plan on your opponent being able to neutralize some of your weapons and if they are smart, they will get rid of your biggest threat ie a buffed up Gorilla which cost you several actions and can be negated with 1 or 2.

Not bashing just making a note.

Spells / Re: The Forcemaster's Forcefield
« on: September 01, 2014, 01:11:06 PM »
As a forcemaster who utilizes forcefield, it really is not that difficult to get rid of. Saving a turn of mana to dispel it is usually the preferred method and there is not a dang thing I can do about it (save jinx you I suppose and hope to catch your dispel). Or if you have several creatures out you can deplete the forcefield through repeated attacks with your small creatures then follow up with your bigs/unavoidable attacks to get through defenses. There are so many unavoidable attacks these days that my defenses are working less and less. Honestly forcefield works fine as is, and really is the only thing that keeps the forcemaster alive any decent amount of time.

Agreed, I usually don't find dice rolls to be that big a deal. Sure it is annoying to miss those yellow die rolls, especially for me using a high risk/high reward mage like Forcemaster, those defense rolls are my lifeblood.

Wow, someone has their panties in a twist.

Not at all. I have had this opinion since I began playing in tournements. I feel one of the major downfalls of mtg is the rampant netdecking. When you go to a mtg tourney and see the same thing over and over, how boring.

I want to face what my opponent thinks is a winning strategy, not what I think is. The game will determine who is more correct in that situation specifically. I never lent my mtg decks out back then either. I did not want to face my decks, but rather my opponents. I want to see their surprise tactic, or combo, or superior play they may have come up with and react accordingly. Did I have something in my design to handle it?

Not sure why you assumed a negative here.

I think Zot has a point. I too would rather play a variety of spellbooks, not the flavor of the month. I see nothing wrong with his request.

I was the 2nd Forcemaster in the final 8. This was really my first tournament that I played in (I had played at Dicetower last year but had only just begun to play so did not hardly understand the rules and it showed).

For me my opening play was move and cast Battleforge and then quickcast Sunfire Amulet. That amulet was an MVP for me for sure. There is something psychological about your life ticking up every turn that makes it hard for your opponent to ignore. This extra life also extended my life so that I could focus on killing the other mage. My build is all about attack (as most Forcemasters are). My plan was always to be attacking the opponent by turn 3 at the latest. Whenever I saw an opponent put out items for a long game (Barracks + Construction turn 1 for example) I knew I had the advantage.

Pretty straightforward book though and I had difficulty overcoming wall strategies (both delaying walls and Wall of Thorns). I had inadvertently cost myself 2 spellbook points so was running 118/120 which would have been very helpful with an eagleclaw boots. Also Akiro's Favor would have helped to overcome the numerous dazes I encountered against both Wizards I played (Wiz Tower + Surging Wave is very difficult for me to deal with if I don't have Forcefield up though not impossible as I split my wizard games 1-1).

Ultimately I went down in the first round of the Finals to Tim's Earth Wizard by being too aggressive. The life advantage was mine for most of the game due to Sunfire and there was a point that I should have backed off and recharged. I had him Force Crushed but he had his tower right next door and a renewing spring to take off the corrodes I was putting on with my Devouring Jelly. I was mana starved due to the Crush so should have backed up out of range of the tower and recharged, then had him come to me or finish him off with more mana. Ultimately I failed about 3-4 Defense rolls at the end and was crushed with a boulder on Turn 16/17. Very sad.

It was a great experience though, went 3-2 overall and Top 8 is not bad. Many changes I'll be making to FM including adding Eagle boots, Akiro's Favor and more attack spells. Congrats to Alex and all the other top 8. Hope to see you again soon.

Strategy and Tactics / Re: Current top-notch spellbooks?

Not sure about swarms being top notch builds for anybody. There are so many counters easily included to counter.

I'm in the tourney using my Forcemistress so don't want to reveal too much (2-0 atm, wish me luck) First round had lots (4+) of necros, wizards and warlocks(arraxian no adramalechs) with a smattering of forcemasters (3?), druids(2?), beastmasters (1), warlord (1?). Haven't seen a single priestess, priest, joktari, or adramalech. I'm rather surprised at the lack of lady locks with the recent release of FiF but maybe folks haven't had time to get a handle yet. I believe total people was 25-30.

Most I interesting matchup I saw was lock v lock, both beatdown arraxian builds standing toe to toe in the center wailing on each other like Rocky Balboa heavyweights. I believe the winner only had 2-3 life left.

AW is selling magnetized status boards and acrylic colored dice which look really cool so that is my mission today.

Yes it is expensive but probably for the weak ability. There are only 2 other creatures that do weak right now, Gorgon Archer and Wraith. However I would rather have the Gorgon as it is cheaper in mana, spellpoints and the regen will make it almost as hardy as this flying monstrosity.

I do like that we have manticores though. More fantasy creatures please. We need some owlbears or wererats too!
