Title: Kraken and guarding
Post by: adanaz on January 08, 2018, 10:29:57 AM
Hey guys,

I guard with the Kraken.  The Kraken is melee attacked.  Where is my quick action melee attack to use as a Counterstrike?  Is it my mistake to guard with a creature that lacks a quick action melee attack and expect a Counterstrike?

I didn't find it written anywhere that a creature who lacks a quick action melee attack does not get to Counterstrike when guarding.  Although I did find that 'Ranged attacks skip this step' and 'You may not make a full action melee attack or a ranged attack with Counterstrike.'

I think it was an oversight on my part (hangs head and sobs softly).

Thanks!

Full action only attacks cannot be used to counterstrike. Only quick action attacks.

The only benefit you get is to have a big guard that can take a hit instead of the attack hitting your mage.

Not a mistake, but Kraken is definitely a creature you might prefer to attack with than to guard with.

I find [mwcard=DNC18]Togorah, Forest Sentinel[/mwcard] difficult to play partly for the same reason. He has Vigilance/Intercept, which makes you assume he must be a terrific guard... but doesn't get to counterstrike. At least the Vigilance allows him to attack and get a guard marker in the same round, but it still feels hollow when your guard doesn't get to counterstrike.

I guess a 6 dice attack is a bit much for a counterstrike.  In a large number of cases, it would be a stronger attack than that of the aggressor!

Thanks for the replies!

The jelly! Corrosive attack that reconstructs and devours can can't make a counterstike :(
I understand why, but he is on that list too

I don't have the rules in front of me, but I believe placing a guard only provides the Counterstrike trait to a Quick Melee Attack of that Creature. So the Kraken would still Protect the Zone, but would not receive a Counterstrike when placed on Guard.

Yeah, he can guard but not hit back so he can be used as a guard to soak up hits
