Title: The Yearly MageWars Web-League: rules, registration, membership list, help, news
Post by: Sailor Vulcan on January 27, 2015, 07:00:51 PM
Teams must be named and have at least 3 players (with no upper limit), and each team must play at minimum a total of 30 complete games throughout the year. All league games must be played on OCTGN, allow spectators and be between members of different teams. When posting the results of a league game, you must include a copy of the game log and a screenshot of the end of the game. Once registered, you cannot switch teams until January 1st of the next year.

The team with the highest win/loss ratio by midnight on the first of January of each year will be the champions and will be recorded in the Hall of Fame! Also, the top-ranking individual players of the league will receive Wonder Magnets! (In case you're wondering, Wonder Magnets are like Banana Stickers, except that they're awarded for supremacy in the arena, rather than helpfulness on the forums. Not sure how Wonder Magnets will be implemented though, and how to keep people from lying about how many Wonder Magnets have. I might end up switching to some other kind of prize system if I have to.)

Approved formats are for any number of players unless otherwise specified.
The current approved formats for league games

Standard (not in team games)

Lifebonded (not in free for all or 1v1, 2v2 version uses 4x5 forest arena)

Mental
(http://forum.arcanewonders.com/index.php?topic=14253)

Capture the Flag
(http://forum.arcanewonders.com/index.php?topic=13164)

(Free for all games are won by the mage that achieves first kill AND by last mage standing.)

LFG :D

Seriously, I'm in.  I would very much like to team up with some people from whom I can really learn to play better.  I consider myself a decent player, but a meta-ignorant one, and could really benefit from some key pointers.

Hope this actually gets some interest. It's a great idea. I'm going to be busy quite a bit IRL but I'd still like to participate. I should be able to get games in sometimes.

Now for the most essential part, thinking of an awesome team name...

I'm definitely up for it. Depending on the number of participants, you may have to go down to two people per team (depending on how many teams you were planning to have), but it sounds like a blast!

I don't get to play this game often enough. I'd live to try out a team, year long contest!

I need a team. My name on OCTGN is warder808

I'm hoping for as many teams as possible. There's technically no registration deadline, so people can join the league at any point throughout the year except on New Year's Eve. Your team still has to have completed at least 30 league games and posted their game logs and screenshots here by midnight jan 1st, though, otherwise your team's win/loss ratio will not be counted. Don't forget that once you join a team, you cannot switch to another team until January 1st of the next year.

And of course, if there's a tie, the team that's played more games trumps the one that's played less.

I believe Coshade, Intangible, and I are forming a team. Don't have an official name yet though.

We would say we're open to more members as well but I think we should let some other teams form up before we add more to ours.

If anyone needs help choosing a team name, I've already come up with a REALLY good one that I don't want:

"the Hands of Bim-Shalla"

Also, if whoever I team up with agrees to it, then I call dibs on the name "Akiro's Favorites"

That historical event also was known as the "Great Molasses Flood". "Molasses Flood" sounds a lot more impressive IMO, especially since a lot of people won't know what the Boston Molasses disaster is. Would you like to change your team name to "the (Great) Molasses Flood"?

Ray,

I'm sure anyone here would be happy to instruct you in the ways of OCTGN whilst (and at the same time!) being summarily destroyed by your great mage-ly-ness.  If you would prefer to stay in with your wife and child on Tuesday this week I would be happy to fire up some OCTGN and show you the commands.

Also, the 1v1 and 2v2 are not separate leagues. Participants agree on an approved format at the start of the league match.  Just thought I should point that out.

I am registering my team. Sorry Ironlegionairre but I HIGHLY doubt we'll be able to come up with a team name that we all can agree on. The following team name is IMO good enough to be impressive to both friends and enemies alike:

Akiro's Favorites
Ironlegionairre
murphy
Sailor_Vulcan(henry_ketchup)
ACG(acg)

Come on and register your teams people! It's already February!

hmm i would not separate the two formats 1on1 and 2on2. why not allowing teams to play in what ever format they want to play? in the end, its always team against team. the 2on2 format will not be played very often anyway.

Because imbalanced formats might bias the results, and those two formats are the only ones that I thought people would all agree were sufficiently balanced.

Then again, if both teams agree on the format then I suppose it doesn't matter too much. I'll add a few more and then if anyone has some requests I might add those too.

I'd be interested too, however I'm now a fan of 2v2. Are there or have there been plans to run a "normal" league for individual players?

Ok, didn't read the opening post too closely. But then I'm wondering: Why teams in the first place? Why not just run a normal league where anybody can participate as long as a minimum number of games against different opponents is played?

This way encourages more experienced players to help each other and their less skilled teammates improve their game, more dialogue and brainstorming more often to optimize spellbooks and play beyond the forums. With a team there's more incentive to help strengthen the weaker players since you will be working together to get your team to win, even if you're not always playing team games. Hoping it will raise the population of competent and skilled MW players, I'm thinking it will encourage more participation from newer and less skilled players. We have a community of over 4000, but the majority are rarely active.

Also, having teams allows for the league to have a variety of legal formats, for both team games and non-team games. Otherwise we would have to make completely separate leagues for every format, since it's not fair to base an individual player rating on both team games and non team games, since having teammates that are more skilled or compatible with you would give you an advantage over equally skilled players that didn't happen to have such teammates when they play team games. However, a purely 2v2 league (using Lifebonded format; the optimal team rules that Zuberi came up with and Schwenkgott improved upon), would wither and die with the level of participation it has now, and that's the most popular variant. I'm hoping this league will make it so that variants like life-bonded 2v2 will have their own actual metagames.

Also, I'm betting that teams with cool names will create more enthusiasm and hype than individual players. It will make people feel more involved with the game and with the community.

I'm still hoping that the old league's challenge board gets updated again though, since it would still be good for players to see their individual win/loss ratio in each format and compare to other players so they can have a useful way to measure their progress (as well as the occasional bragging rights).

Thanks for the explanation Sailor Vulcan. Good points all, strengthening the community. However, I'll still be hoping for a simple 1v1 league due to time constraints.

Finding time is hard enough as is, but finding a time slot with even more people seems impossible for me at the moment and I'd imagine I'm not alone in this boat... :(

Just because your on a team doesn't mean you have to schedule a game with your team members. You can schedule a game against another player on a different team and play a 1 on 1 game (all day long if you want). These games would just go to meet your teams global games needed in league play.

Last night we played a game for this league with henry_ketchup and promised to report the game in the forum.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a way to attach a file or insert a screenshot as requested. Can anybody help me?!
May I take the chance to ask if there is any preferred format for reporting this? As attachment or in the body of the post itself?
Thanks!

Hmm, ok. I guess that's just nothing for me then at the moment. If I play a 1v1 without anybody from my team watching, then I see no difference to a "solitary" league game. Deck and strategy discussion is already happening elsewhere and there are plenty of resources around to become a better player.
I'll keep watching this thread and who knows, maybe I will come to realize how this really "works" but for now I'll stick to my spontaneous evening matches against random opponents.

I'm sorry it took so long to get back to you. I forget what had actually been decided, but right now I'm thinking that it's best to only release the current standings are certain times throughout the year, so that no one takes advantage of that information by racking up wins against weaker players. I probably should have thought of some way to make winner against a more skilled player to count for more, but I never managed to think of it and the league has already begun. I will try to come up with a better system for next year's league.

It wasn't really planned well enough and people weren't very active. Feel free to continue reporting league games for now if you want, but the league basically didn't QUITE work out this year. It's not necessarily officially dead this year, it's just in a coma that it may or may not awaken from. We're going to see if single elimination tournaments like the kind schwenk is running generate any more interest.

I think what would work the best for me is if there was a scheduled time to play the game.  If you got matched with an opponent and then the two of you found a time when you could play.  That would keep things moving.  As it is, I have to log on and hope there's an opponent who is in a league team that is on at the same time as me.  Not the easiest task.
