Just the one tournament this year or will there be qualifiers? Also, are there any plans to organize casual playing?

Could anyone be starting to make recordings of these tournaments ? I would love to see match coverage on YouTube ! Just like the ones you can see from magic the gathering....i can already imagine a pro tour mage wars, or a mage wars grand prix being aired live on twitch !

I also wish this would happen, as do all of us. However, I'm quite sure it would be very expensive to get full coverage of a tournament.

Im not seeing Mage Wars/Arcane Wonders anywhere on the events list for GenCon2014. Is it just not an official GenCon event or what is the deal?

I'm going to start signing up for events this weekend. I would like Mage Wars to be included in the list, but if they aren't posted soon, I might not be able to join in the fun.

PLEASE get them on the schedule ASAP!

I saw that it was finally listed last night. Unfortunately, I also learned that I can't drop events until GenCon starts now to make room for the tournament, so I'm just hoping that there will be an opening left....

It would have been nice to have at least known the time slot(s) to plan to keep open prior to GenCon opening to event sign-ups. Maybe next year you can tell us that much in advance, at least.

Looking at all the events it would seem that Saturday should be like Friday's event as they have 32 seats listed.  Not sure it should have been invite only, would have thought the finals on Sunday would be the only invite only as it states it is for the finalists from day one and two.  Someone should ask Patrick to clarify this, I would hate for Saturday to have no participants.

I thought the same but then I saw the invite only so I wrote what was listed.

This is what stood out for me.
" This mulit-day, swiss-style. Entrants must bring a Tournament Legal spellbook. Top 8 will compete Sunday for the Championship. "
When I read that it reads as if this is a 6 round event and 3 rounds are played each day.

If they are the same I will adjust my post.

So all the standard sets and expansions are allowed.  What about cards from the Organized playkits?   Legal?

Those are promo cards. So unless they have been released in an official expansion, no.

Correct

Best thing to do is check the spell in the SBB (http://forum.arcanewonders.com/sbb/) or check the set lists

I suspect this has been answered before, but could someone please confirm exactly what is meant by "highest remaining life total"? I assume the tie-breaker is life minus damage and not merely whichever player has accrued more damage.

Wish I could make it.  Europe to America is a bit far for the event, though it is tempting.  Perhaps AW will be at Essen in Germany for all us European players?

From the Tournament Guidelines page:

"Modified Win: In the event that neither player has attained a Match Win when time is called, the player with the most Life remaining after Damage (i.e. Life – Damage) is awarded the Modified Win. If there is no clear Modified Win, both players will receive a Draw."

So yes, Life-Damage

So.... I can't figure out how to use the BGG site to see the cards in the new set. I am trying to figure out which of my promos I could use since none of the stores in my area can get the expansion.

Does anyone have a list anywhere else?

Thanks!

I'm in the tourney using my Forcemistress so don't want to reveal too much (2-0 atm, wish me luck) First round had lots (4+) of necros, wizards and warlocks(arraxian no adramalechs) with a smattering of forcemasters (3?), druids(2?), beastmasters (1), warlord (1?). Haven't seen a single priestess, priest, joktari, or adramalech. I'm rather surprised at the lack of lady locks with the recent release of FiF but maybe folks haven't had time to get a handle yet. I believe total people was 25-30.

Most I interesting matchup I saw was lock v lock, both beatdown arraxian builds standing toe to toe in the center wailing on each other like Rocky Balboa heavyweights. I believe the winner only had 2-3 life left.

AW is selling magnetized status boards and acrylic colored dice which look really cool so that is my mission today.

So, the StrayWood beastmaster wins the Tournament. With Falcon Swarm! I must say, i am really interested in his spellbook. Also, i can comfortably say to each new player, that there is no super strong mage, which wins every tournament, it is all about player it self and his ability how he uses his tools (spellbook and mage).

Congratulation to the winner! Now i have to wait until America will had morning and more news and pictures will flood MW facebook and this forum :)

I'm Alexander West's brother and the forcemaster he faced in round 1 of the top 8.  Here's a quote of his brief summery from another thread:
Arcane Wonders said they were going to put out a full report with the top 8 booklists, lots of pictures, and some metagame analysis of decks.  I also plan to write a tournament report which I will probably complete sometime this week.  Without going too deep into it at the moment, I'll give a brief sketch of my plan:

T1: Lair (aggressive move to NC and cast in FC, defensive cast in start corner)
T2: Deploy Falcon (pet), QC Falcon, punch if possible
T3: Deploy Falcon, QC Falcon, punch if possible

It's really important to get a critical mass of birds on the table fast so that the opponent is pressured to spend time armoring up or countermeasures like archers or flying creatures can be killed before taking (much) action.  From there I mostly tried to use cards like Dispel/Dissolve/Acid Ball as countermeasures to defensive measures my opponent might take.  Acid Ball vs. armor stacks or to soften armor on conjurations, Dissolve vs. cloaks, bows/whips, and sometimes chest pieces, Dispel vs. damage barriers, etc.  Etherian Lifetree and Healing Spring both played a big role in keeping falcons alive vs. some threats (the tree is amazing vs. Ring of Fire) while Rajan's Fury provided extra firepower when a critical mass of Falcons were achieved.

My opponents at the tournement:
Swiss:
Arraxian Crown Warlock (4-0)
Anvil Throne Warlord (0-4)
Water Wizard (4-0)
Arraxian Crown Warlock (3-1)
Top 8:
Forcemaster (4-0)
Air Wizard (4-0)
Fire Wizard (3-1) - Charmyna Blasting Banker book

More to come later, but for now I should probably go back to sleep!   ;)

The short version is: acid ball made swarm viable since Druid vs Necro came out, wizard isn't king.  Alexander's book had virtually no new cards from FIF.  I would have played a goblin swarm warlord if I had had time to test the book, but I had to stick to my trusted forcemaster.

He beat a wizard in the top 4 who threw blanks on a chain lightning that could have taken out his entire army.

Sandstorm is an efficient zone removal card with a bonus against flying creatures. I run jet streams in my necro, and i would run a Sandstorm if it was a legal card.

Hey!
I played that wizard that got in 4th at the tourney. I was too greedy that game and he took full advantage of that. My chain lightning failing to do 2 damage on 4 dice (he had about 2 or 3 birds with 1 or 2 health each) really messed up my focus and I played incorrectly the rest of the game. It was my first tournament ever so I guess I just need to learn to not get off my game plan when things like that happen.

I'll post my spell book sometime tonight if anyone's interested

Well, for next year, I'd definitely say have some one, or somebodies doing some video commentary pre-tourney on who they think will claim the prize, and posting to Youtube and/or Facebook. It would be nice to see how the top 8 perform and even get some ideas for other books (i.e. RUNNING SUPPRESSION WITH A WATER WIZARD  :'( ).

Or even for next tourney having a minion of your own Shad0w, so you don't have to do everything at once.

Other than that, this year's tourney was great and I am thoroughly impressed there were five Forcemasters! They will rise, slowly but surely!

After the lists publication, perhaps the top 8 players may give a quick rundown of MVP creature/spell and Best Plays, for their books  ;) Not asking for a primer here, just a few tips.

Here's a link to the spell book I ran at Gen Con. Nathan used the Anvil Throne Warlord that you see as the second comment at Gen Con as well.

My tournament report from GenCon is now up on the Arcane Wonders' Mage Wars page.  It has the full spellbook, as well as commentary on the spells and games played:
http://www.arcanewonders.com/arcane-wonders/gen-con-champions-tournament-report

I have started a thread in the Spellbook Design and Construction subforum for anyone who would like to discuss the book:
http://forum.arcanewonders.com/index.php?topic=14540.0

I did my best to get all the details right, forgive me if anything is slightly off, I worked purely from memory!

I badly misplayed against Nick on the second round of the tourney match. I could play my book one of 2 ways, and chose poorly, which played into his long game strength. As a result, I lost before even getting going. It went to time, and had I chose to play correctly, who knows how it would have went. I would have like my matchup against the beast master.

Anyway congrats to Alex. It was great that a not wizard won.

I was the 2nd Forcemaster in the final 8. This was really my first tournament that I played in (I had played at Dicetower last year but had only just begun to play so did not hardly understand the rules and it showed).

For me my opening play was move and cast Battleforge and then quickcast Sunfire Amulet. That amulet was an MVP for me for sure. There is something psychological about your life ticking up every turn that makes it hard for your opponent to ignore. This extra life also extended my life so that I could focus on killing the other mage. My build is all about attack (as most Forcemasters are). My plan was always to be attacking the opponent by turn 3 at the latest. Whenever I saw an opponent put out items for a long game (Barracks + Construction turn 1 for example) I knew I had the advantage.

Pretty straightforward book though and I had difficulty overcoming wall strategies (both delaying walls and Wall of Thorns). I had inadvertently cost myself 2 spellbook points so was running 118/120 which would have been very helpful with an eagleclaw boots. Also Akiro's Favor would have helped to overcome the numerous dazes I encountered against both Wizards I played (Wiz Tower + Surging Wave is very difficult for me to deal with if I don't have Forcefield up though not impossible as I split my wizard games 1-1).

Ultimately I went down in the first round of the Finals to Tim's Earth Wizard by being too aggressive. The life advantage was mine for most of the game due to Sunfire and there was a point that I should have backed off and recharged. I had him Force Crushed but he had his tower right next door and a renewing spring to take off the corrodes I was putting on with my Devouring Jelly. I was mana starved due to the Crush so should have backed up out of range of the tower and recharged, then had him come to me or finish him off with more mana. Ultimately I failed about 3-4 Defense rolls at the end and was crushed with a boulder on Turn 16/17. Very sad.

It was a great experience though, went 3-2 overall and Top 8 is not bad. Many changes I'll be making to FM including adding Eagle boots, Akiro's Favor and more attack spells. Congrats to Alex and all the other top 8. Hope to see you again soon.

Please withhold mine from being posted. I would rather not contribute to netdecking spell books. Thanks.

It was a good game though. It was getting close to time, and we were both hurt. I was pretty pleased to see so many forcemasters being played. It is my second favorite mage to play. You played pretty good considering it was your first tournement. Hope to see you again next year.

Wow, someone has their panties in a twist.

Not at all. I have had this opinion since I began playing in tournements. I feel one of the major downfalls of mtg is the rampant netdecking. When you go to a mtg tourney and see the same thing over and over, how boring.

I want to face what my opponent thinks is a winning strategy, not what I think is. The game will determine who is more correct in that situation specifically. I never lent my mtg decks out back then either. I did not want to face my decks, but rather my opponents. I want to see their surprise tactic, or combo, or superior play they may have come up with and react accordingly. Did I have something in my design to handle it?

Not sure why you assumed a negative here.

I think Zot has a point. I too would rather play a variety of spellbooks, not the flavor of the month. I see nothing wrong with his request.

If the spellbook is fun enough to play, net decking isn't such a bad thing every once in a while. It's only if people start relying on it too much that it becomes a problem for the metagame.

Rule of thumb: only share spellbooks that are really really fun. I want to try Murphy's "Thief" forcemaster eventually, and i just haven't gotten around to it yet. There are some rather ingenious spellbook designs that I've played and wish that I had come up with them.

I still love building my own spellbooks though.

Since Mage Wars is a game of instant answers, I think "relying" on the "net-deck" for your spellbook is actually a downside. Good players will recognize what's being played and are able to anticipate the remained of your spellbook, and since you can grab what you need when you need it, you can be prepared for any tricks.

End of the day, I think that the nature of Mage Wars makes it less of an issue, as it's more in the skill of the pilot than the strength of the jets.

and the roll of the dice...

Mage Wars is actually great as far as dice variance goes.  I love that they made cards like Akiro's Favor, which are essentially insurance on dice outcomes.  Additionally, as a player you get to choose whether you play a high variance strategy or a low variance strategy.  Some kinds of books are *much* more dependent on a few die rolls than others, whether because the latter book uses fewer die-based mechanics, or rolls *so many* dice that any specific die roll isn't a big deal.

Post by: Battlehamster on August 22, 2014, 01:04:13 PM
Agreed, I usually don't find dice rolls to be that big a deal. Sure it is annoying to miss those yellow die rolls, especially for me using a high risk/high reward mage like Forcemaster, those defense rolls are my lifeblood.

Mentioning Akiros Favor and the effect dice with the Force Master got me thinking. Could you use Akiros Favor to re-roll her Deflection roll? Cause that's pretty awesome.
Title: Re: Mage Wars Tournament @ GenCon Indy 2014

@silverclawgrizzly:

No, that's what Temple of the Dawnbreaker does.  (Which is both pretty awesome, and a bit pricier to do!)  Akiro's Favor is only for attacks.

No hurry Shadow. Con Crud is a leading cause of putting good gamers on the shelf. Had I thought about it I'd have sent you guys up a box of hand wipes and Febreeze which is my standard con protection gear. One year I'll get around to Cosplaying an A.I.M Scientist so I can justify wearing a Haz-mat suit to a con.

Thanks for putting these up Shadow. Some interesting reads to say the least.

Can anyone provide some insight as to why these books have multiple Battleforges?  I have long been under the impression that the action advantage is very useful early game when equipping up, but the later in the game the less equipment you have left to put on, and the fewer turns there will be for the forge to repay the mana you've invested.

Also, Shad0w, thanks for putting these up and I hope you feel better soon!

That's a very good question I was wondering myself. Battleforge is cool, but I've never seen more than one in a book. Interesting idea anyway.

On an unrelated note I put an Etherian Lifetree in my Beast Master book tonight. Worked pretty good so thanks.

The reasoning I've heard for including multiple Battle Forges in a build is to have a backup in case their opponent focuses it down within 1-2 rounds.

Exactly. Not everyone has conquest of kumanjaro. Without that expansion, no intercept, except for Togorah.
