Title: Mage Wars Companion App - Feature Requests
Post by: Laddinfance on January 23, 2015, 02:16:17 PM
This thread is for posting features that you would like to see added to the Mage Wars Companion app. We're eager to have this app become an integral part of your play experience, so please let us know how we can improve.

Thank you for taking the time to help us on this project.

I haven't bought the app yet, but I was wondering if it has the Codex built into it? I've seen lots of talk about the tracker (all good) and the spellbook builder (mostly criticism) but no mention of a Codex. Considering that is the most often referenced material during game play, having it built into the app would be extremely helpful. Having the Rulebook and Rules Supplement built in would also be nice, but not as necessary I believe.

As someone without an appropriate device, I do not have this. But I agree with the above; a codex (preferably searchable) would be amazing.

More compatible devices, including phones.  Our newest galaxy 4.0 tablets aren't supported while the kids Nabi 2 tablets are.
Filtering on multiple criteria for spell book building.
Including the starter books for each mage with the opportunity to a new book based on an old book.

And most of all, an assurance that I won't have to pay money to add more virtual cards to the spell book builder as they become available.

I would need:

1- A filter by type of spell :
Exemple: I want Arcane + incantation or Nature + Enchantment

2- A way to save he name of the spellbook without : Changing name, remove a card, exit, open the book, place a new card, exit.

3- A way to delete spellbook.

4- A way to duplicate a spell book. Exemple: I want to make a new version of the same mage, so I copy the old speelbook as a base to modify it with a new name.

Thanks

Having the tracker on smartphones (and not only on tablets) would be awesome!

When building a spellbook, instead of looking by the school the card is in, if you could search by the type, like conjuration, attack, etc. When I build a deck I usually don't go by the school, I go by the type of card. So if there where a feature where I could look at all attack spells, or even better, look at only attack spells of the fire school, or only war conjurations, etc. Other than that, loving the app so far.

Need to able to rename spell books.
Need to be able to view spell books separately from the builder.  i.e. be able to look at and select cards from your deck and not have them delete themselves.
Need to be able to view available cards by type.
Need to be able to record history of games played. (Record wins and losses when using different mages.
Searchable rules codex
Add spell tombs and promo cards
Indicate when card limit is reached based on number of cards owned.
Do not add IAP for expansions. Add cost into expansion sets (if necessary) or give a code to those who buy expansions sets to get APP updates for free. $5 is a premium price for an app that doesn't really DO anything. Eg. I can't play it. This app now makes me want to get the expansions I missed, it is encouraging play, charging me to then update the app will feel cheap.
zoom on cards needs to be bigger
Alternate way to scroll pages (arrows or something) as often a slip of the finger means you select a card you had no intention of selecting.

Thanks

Since a lot of other people have mentioned search capabilities, I will add that the search and filter features of OCTGN are the main reason I use it for spellbook building. With it I can search by Name, which Set it came in, Type, Subtype, School of magic, Mana Cost, Level, Card ID number, whether it takes a Quick or Full action to cast, the Range I can cast it at, what it Targets, how much life or armor it has, what it has in the attack bar, and the Card Text. I'm not saying that the official spellbook builders need this much functionality, but I will say that is what you guys are competing with and it is very useful. At the least I would include the same filters as on the current web based spellbook builder: Name, Type, Subtype, School, Level, and Cost.

QFT

All of the card data is searchable, also it has an export function to post your book to the forum or into the AW spellbook format.

I am enjoying this app. Thanks a lot for making it and for providing support for it. Here are my suggestions.

In addition to the aforementioned search functions and acces to the codex here is functionality I believe should be in this app: (in addition to fixing the incorrect novice spell calculating)

Builder:

1) a way to delete spellbooks

2) a way to view cards in the spellbook without deleting them (not to mention making it harder to accidentally delete spells when scrolling through book list. It is very frustrating to accidentally delete a spell and can't tell which one you deleted)

3) a way to sort cards by type

4) ability to see the mages special abilities while building (maybe include the mage special ability cards in the library)

5) easier navigation through the pages. Swiping is very tedious and the click function is difficult. (This might be eliminated by being able to sort by school and type at the same time so I could just see the nature enchantments for example or all enchantments)

Tracker;
1) a way to automatically track auto damage (ghoul rot, etc), life gain (sunfire amulet) and healing (regenerate)

2) show the round number

3) provide an undo or back to the previous round feature

im sure I will think of more but here is my staring contribution.

Except the above I would like to see:

- A better overview of your built books. I have only found the books in list format. It would be nice with a grid view of which cards you have picked, together with a sort function inside each book.
- Drag and drop of cards instead of clicking into books. Clicks should be for detailed viewing.
- A built in, let me call it: "Rule-FAQ". With guidance in how Teleport works in variable situations, LOS situations, upkeep orders, etc that might be hard to understand by just reading in the rules. I guess you can easily take these topics from the forum.
- Pre-built books like, apprentice books, tournament winning books, etc together with a guide how each one is meant to be played.
- Add a promo set which you can have as option on top all the other sets.

If nothing else, I'd say the very first update NEEDS to be a better search function... One that searches ALL text on the cards, and not just the titles.  (well, except for flavor, of course...)  :)

I can't imagine it'd be too hard to include that in a relatively short turn-around?

Much harder than you would imagine.....
Is the app running a SQL database for the cards?  Setting up pre-defined filters in SQL that run off drop downs or search boxes and displaying the returned results shouldn't be all that difficult.

Hmm, what i would really welcome is some "round planner". I am not that good when come to math so in a situation, when i am creating Spell Book and trying the best opening, it take some time, paper and pencil :)

Mana + Channeling - card1 - Card2 = Mana left at the end of the round
Mana + Channeling - card3 - Card4 = Mana left at the end of the round
etc.
etc.

:)

Tracker Screen:

-Bigger touch + -

-The round number (Not really important but it's fun to know.)

Game Start:

-A way to remember the name of the mage while playing multiple game against the same oponent.

Spellbook builder:

-A way to change the name of the spellbook and keep the old name. Exemple: spellbook name Falcon beaster v100 and i want to rename it to Falcon Beastmaster v101 without writing it again.

-I found how to change the name and it's way to painfull. I need to open the spellbook, change the name of the spellbook, remove a card, close the spellbook, open the spellbook and finnaly add the card I removed than close the spellbook. Way to long to only change the name...
With this in mind, can you add the option to or fix the problem.
It should be: Open spellbook, change name, close the spellbook.

-It would be usefull to add the option to see what are the cards that changed while modifying the spellbook. So when I am back home, I can take my real Spellbook and change those cards to fit the new version. Exemple: I open the spellbook, change cards and (With the save option implemented) save the spellbook. It will create an icon in the spellbook, where you can see what your removed and what card you added.

-A way to undo what you just did. (Exemple: I remove a card while touching the screen and i dont know what is it.

-Remove the auto saving option in the spellbook builder. If I want to save, I would like to click save spellbook. So, if I dont like what I did, I close the spellbook and load it again with no mofification.

Maybe more to come when i test the app again probably next week.
Very fun to play the game with the new tracker.

Ditto, but iPhone.  Especially if it has a built-in spell book builder, as the one online (http://forum.arcanewonders.com/sbb/index.php#) doesn't work well with my iPhone (zooming issues, can't save or load, etc).

I would like an option to disable animations in the builder, my main concern when building is speed. Using the app on Nexus 7 is a bit too slow to be really good so both improving speed and allowing me to disable animations would be awesome.

Must be nice for the app to work on your nexus 7.

The AW guys say it only works on tablets larger than 7". I also have an Asus Nexus 7, and I can't get the app.

I have downloaded it and installed the spell pack but have yet to play with it other than that.

Great app! love sitting on my commute to work and building my spell books and Reading about the different cards on my ipad.

When me and my friend are playing we use the rulebook heavily to look up different conditions aaall the time. (how did sleep work?, what was stuck?)

It would be soooo nice to have these key Words in the app so that you can click them and get a short description. it would save us a bunch of time.

Keep up the good work!

While it would be nice to have in the app, you can download the Codex, Rules, and Rules and Codex Supplement (http://www.arcanewonders.com/resources-and-downloads) to iBooks (or another PDF viewer) for convenient and searchable reference.

Hi,

I've used the app a little more. I still think it's good but I do have some suggestions.

1. Implement a Change Deck functionality. Since the books can contain so many cards I tweak a book, I dont restart from scratch. So if I go in and delete and add a handful of cards there should be a screen that pops up telling you to Add: Card Y, 2 copies. Card X 1 copy Card Z 4 copies
Remove: Card A, 1 copies. Card B 3 copy Card C 2 copies

This would make tweaking decks a godsend. Otherwise I have to go through my entire book to see the difference between a newer book and the cards actually within the book.

2. Rules/Conditions: Just buy, hire, integrate MW Tools on Android. This does the codex and glossary super well and fast.

3. I would also change the way your rules are written! There are too many entries that give a barebone explanation and say "look up X". Just put X at the bottom of this entry. I don't need to scroll around the entire rule book because you guys aren't consolidating all relevant info.

Otherwise, great app. Keep up the good work.

I used the App for the first time last weekend to build some spellbooks. Overall, it was a good experience, and the recent update corrected some initial flaws in the App.

1. It would be nice to have a "save as" feature for the spellbooks, so you don't have to start every one from scratch. Sometimes you just want to tweak an existing spellbook, but keep the original intact.

2. I would also like to be able to pull up each Mage's reference card when creating the spellbooks. I couldn't remember what some specific abilities were, and it would have been very helpful to have had easy access to each Mage's card (less necessary but also nice would be the Mage's picture card).

3. Cards from the Promo Packs (which are available for purchase from the MW store) should be included in the App.

4. That said, I would also like the ability to add a "freeform text card", where I could type some notes and assign a value. As it stands now, if I want to use any cards not in the App, my spellbook total will not reach 120, and I might forget what I intended to do. If I had a blank card where I could type "Raincloud", and assign my own value for this card, I could then better manage those cards not currently included in the App. I could also use this blank card to leave notes for myself such as "remember to add curses" etc.

5. The text search function works fairly well, but doesn't facilitate searching by card type. Sometimes, I just want to look at all "Creatures" or "Equipment" without having to search by school.

Once you start inputting text in the search box, the related cards start appearing automatically. I don't see the purpose of the magnifying glass icon at the top of the column. Maybe this could be replaced with an icon that gives you direct access to the various Mage reference cards.

I went on the BGG@Sea cruise last month (lucky me!) and  I bought the Mage Wars Companion App to take with me instead of a book. I thought this would be a great way to muse about the mages and do a little spell book crafting. I was shocked to find there were no Mage descriptions to be found. (or am I missing something?)

I don''t play Mage Wars enough to know what each mage does. Finding a synergy for them in the spellbook creator was a key missing ingredient. Where are the runes the dwarf can create? Do I really need to have the physical mage cards on me when I try to use this app to book build? Please say it aint so and I'm just a dummy who missed where the info can be found.

Needless to say, I found something else to do with my downtime. (Had a full day in bed with food poisoning too.)

Yeah,  having the Mage Picture Card & Mage Ability Card automatically appear as the first 2 items in each spellbook (adding zero to the total spellbook cost) would be very nice.

I have used the app since it came out now and there is one thing I would really like to see added to it.

When I create new books it is hard to always remember exactly the main idea with it a few weeks later. If there was a way to note this down it would be great! My thinking is that there is a "your five first turns field" in the app. There you can select the cards you plan to play for each turn. It should keep track of which order the card are planned to be played in, the mana spent/required, where your mage and creatures are positioned, and possibilities to add comments to each planned turn.

In this way I could much easier "try out" my books / openings.

Is there a planed patch for the app soon?

As an aside, I do this all the time in an Excel spreadsheet, calculating channeling, mana available, spent and carried over each round, including spawnpoints/familiars, etc.  Needs columns for spells cast during deployment, regular and quick-cast actions, familiar actions, etc.  Of course, doing this in Excel involves looking up the mana costs of cards here (http://forum.arcanewonders.com/sbb/database.php), which can be time-consuming.  Would definitely like to see this in an app - not to mention iPhone compatibility!

I also used the Tracker during a game recently, which I found to be very helpful.  It was easy to use, allowed both players to easily see the stats of both mages, and helped to ensure that mana used was actually recorded.  Also much less fiddly than having the bits in front of you.

As has been stated previously, it would be nice if you could set up a modifier that automatically adjusts the mage's damage score each round (such as healing from a Regrowth Belt, or additional damage from Rot).  This automated functionalty exists for mana, and having the same functionality for damage would be helpful.

Used the tracker part of the app yesterday again.
- Total life is very small.

- Rematch possibility.

When will a new patch be release? And from which date do you think Domination will be included?

I am starting to use the compamion app to build spellbooks, but I can't find a way to export complete books. I usually print working books i created in octgn via word on a card-sized layout. That way I can put them to the game and play it on board without any need of electronics.

Is there a way to export spellbooks in any format?? If not, the App is worth only 10% for me...

Does the app have a library mode where you dont need to choose a mage? Mages limit the cards you can see. That or don't filter cards you can't use. People should be able to figure that out.

It has been a while since somebody asked again for a mobile version for the companion app. I fully respect routes needed to make it work propperly.

BUT I don't get it what's the big deal with freeing the app for mobile devices. I bet my smartphone has double of all technical features than my tablet. More pixels, more processor, more all. And I really use it all the time while the tablet is at home. I bite my ass for knowing the would work fine for sure and it just lacks a permission. With root and faking around I could make it work, but that would brake down other apps.

What is the point? I guess the app would be used much more and intense when available for mobile devices. Even with minor bugs like scrolling at unhappy places. More users = more talk about mage wars = more interested new players = more new players learning cards and thinking of spellbooks on the road = more creative strategies and so on...

Can someone please release the app for mobile in the way it is? It can not be that hard and or disgusting in it's optic

Thanks a lot fas723! That worked easy and the app is running smooth as I guessed.
Even more I wonder why they don't open it up at google play. I think more people would use it that way.

Now I start waiting for updates like import/export of spellboooks :D

At least a way to import/export spellbooks should be provided. I have my books in octgn and get ideas and thoughts on the road. Those would land in the app, but because i don't want to start from scratch and i also don't want to do the spellbook twice i don't use the app.

I feel like that is a shame and a punch in the face for whoever developed this. So much work unused because of a missing detail...

Serious: is this app still unser development?

A Import/Export is important.
What about Domination? It is out and in play for a while and the cards are not listet in the App.
What about Academy? Same question.
What about Mage Stat Cards?

I paid for this and now can't get rid of the feeling, that after enough times sold the companion got dumped. That is sad!

Yes, it's still being worked on. I understand the frustration, and we've been trying to work with our developer. I'm sorry I don't have more news, but we keep trying to push forward on it.

Thanks for your Feedback! It was just strange to hear nothing at all about it.
It is a very nice App and I am looking forward to actually using it. Take your time.

Loving the app, could use some minor tweaks:

- beeing able to see the mage abilities
- sorting cards op type aswell as school
- add a favorite cards tab

great work!

Do you have a timetable for us Laddinfance?
I would say updating all now existing cards is the most important for all users.

My top desired features:

- Review the Mage card of the selected mage.
- Ability to copy a spell book.
- Search for any text on the card ("teleport" or "vampiric" or "fire +" or "equipment" etc).
- Cards in other languages (German).
- Add Arena + Battlegrounds cards.
- Search only for certain spell types ("Equipment" or "Creature" or "Incantation" etc.)
- Option to generate the default deck for each mage as suggested by the documentation.
- Ability to review the entire codex for all products including search feature.
- Guided attack - Q&A guiding a player through an attack: "Does the attacked object have the flying trait? (y/n)" / "Do you have Line of Sight to the target? (y/n)" / "Does the attacked object have a defence? (y/n)" etc.
- Swipe left right to move between magnified cards.
- Ability to send spell books to other users via mail, messages etc.
- Hyperlink keywords on cards to integrated codex.
- Roll dice.
- A 4x4 field matrix (or larger) where column search terms are AND-ed and row search terms are OR-ed. All search terms searching all relevant text on the card. That way you could search for cards that are either incantations or enchantments from the nature school that modify melee or ranged attacks:

"incantation" AND "nature" AND "melee +"
OR
"enchantment" AND "nature" AND "melee +"
OR
"incantation" AND "nature" AND "ranged +"
OR
"enchantment" AND "nature" AND "ranged +"

If I could choose one feature except addition of all the new card it would have been an: First-4-turns-opening-counter, where you can visually perform your first 4 turns and it shows how much mana you have spent, where you are positioning, and what cards you have in play.

I am very happy to see things are progressing. OCTGN has all Academy cards and I guess PvS will be updated soon. PvS is finally out and Exid works his way through all rules questions so I guess a supplement update is likely to follow.

But nothing about the app. It is totally useless without actual cards and those unchanged few bugs and featurewishes. It is by the way unfair to sell it in this version and promote it as a good official product!

I bought it - so I ask: is the app finally dead? If so I will delete it and hope AW will delete all promo to it as well! If not: when can we expect some progress?

I would like to here some official statement since I spent some bucks here. And please if you don't know what's the plan because it's on hold tell me how realistic is it that this is going to change?
Thanks

What he said. Bought the app recently just to see, that half of the stuff I need is not even in there so I can not use it at all and wasted money on an unfinished product. At least put a warning lable in the store so people can see, what editions are included.

Hello??

Im my eyes Arcane Wonders stands for a quality product. There is no need for something that feels like a rip-off if you're not reading all reviews. As an official app it has to have some quality without further investigation.

So you do NOT think this product should be complete? Ok then.
So you are also completely fine with the spellbook builder in the current state? Ok then.

Dude rly - if you do not have something to contribute - just keep out.

Everyone, lets keep things calm. We don't need anyone poking either side of this. The comment was unnecessary, as were the responses to it. It's been stated previously that the App and online spellbook builder are not working as we had planned, and we're trying to work on both of those issues. The App is more tricky as it is in the hands of our developer. We are still working to get these situations resolved.

In the meantime, there is no reason to specifically poke at others unrest. This sucks, and they have a right to express that. However, it's poking back isn't going to get us anywhere either.

Thanks Laddin for your answer. I read that the app is not thrown away, but no changes are gonna come very soon.

I understand that such things can be more complicated than they look like. A hint for new customers would be nice and transparent though.

Are we any closer to an awesome and usable product that feels like something that matches that caliber and craftsmanship of other Arcane Wonders products?

Also can I use it on my phone? I have decent phone and a great PC and no plans to purchase something in-between. Phone support would add many potential customers

Also interested. There is a big demand on planning tools for this game. Without them it is nearly unplayable sadly.

Just got the Paladin vs Siren expansion in, my collection is complete again!

Really hope the app&website will be up te date with the new mages SOON!

Edit: Laddinfance, I see it has been over 2 months ago since your last update here. Any news on updates for either the app or website deck builder?

best regards,

Jedah

It's been like, a couple years now since the app came out right? I hope that they get to this at some point this year.

I wouldn't hold my breath for an update to the official app or the official spell book builder / card database.

If you're looking for a functional up-to-date card database and spell book builder, though, I highly recommend http://www.spellbookbuilder.com (http://www.spellbookbuilder.com).

According to Tony, they are working on the app.  I never got the app to function correctly on my tablet, it would always crash.

Don't hold your breath for an official deckbuilding tool.

In the near five years of MW's existence, for how long have we had an updated functional official deckbuilder ?
