Fee: $5
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I will be finalizing all the event rules and posting them  sometime today.

For the Mage Wars Bashcon 2014 tournament the following rules are in place.

This tournament is open to all Mage Wars players. A 120-point spellbook is required*. Spells (cards) from the following expansions are permitted:

Mage Wars Core Set, Forcemaster vs Warlord, Conquest of Kumanjaro, and Druid vs Necromancer.

The tournament will be swiss format with the number of rounds based upon attendance. All entrants will receive a promo card.
Prizes will be awarded to the top - 4 players.

*You must bring your own spellbook. Spellbooks will not be provided.

Match time limit will be 90 minutes.

For the Swiss rounds

End of time procedure is as follows. If the time limit has run out while a match is still in progress, that match will finish its current round. If no winner has been decided after that round. You will check the life total remaining on each mage and the player with the highest is the winner. If neither player has a higher total then repeat this process.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet on either the Earth Wizard or Warlock.

Although tis hard to have an educated guess without knowing spellbook specifics.

How about book covers? Can you talk about that?

Any sightings of the expansion spellbook covers at Bashcon?

Round one = two priest wins! Heck yeah! Smite those heathens! Their opponents were even the earth wizard and Warlock. Way to beat the crowd favorites!

Round two = priest vs priest...well we are guaranteed another priest win but also a priestly defeat. Still, I am putting my money on a priest victory this tournament. Not because they have the most favorable odds, just because they be my favorite competitor.

Of course my predictions are incorrect. What a surprise :P

What happened to Devin? Did he get penalized b/c of the incorrect play with his mana crystals?

He forgot he had another event.
Just a warning but since it is passive judging I had to wait till it was brought  up after being noticed.

Makes me smile. Undefeated priest victory is a big boost to his image. I would like to see his book if he is willing to share.

Good solid book there. I like it a lot. Very happy to see the Priest win it. I've been wanting to tinker with him for a bit myself.

That is perfectly understandable. I think we all know what spells are being referenced. Auto correct is a mischievous imp that we've all seen before.

I wouldn't mind seeing what changes you made and hearing about your matches. What kind of difficulties did you face? Would you have done anything differently?

Keep in mind I am still fairly new (still less than 10 games).

I believe so far I took out the walls since I really never used them. I also put in eagleclaw boots to make it harder for opponents to dictate my board position.

I am looking at a few different tourney programs. If anybody knows a good program I can use for android let me know.

The one I used this time does not like byes so Carlos did not get a win credit for round 2. When it did the math overall it said Thomas was worth more points on ties than Jackson was. That is why Carlos got 4th and Jackson got 3rd. Even though Carlos won v Jackson in round 4. I can agree with that since Thomas won against 2 players.

I loved the reports. I really got excited and into rooting for my favorite mage. Being able to see the spell books that was used is really cool too as I can try to imagine how the matches went and what challenges they could pose for each other. I really wish I could have seen the actual matches. With that in mind I have two suggestions:

1) recordings of the matches. I don't honestly expect this to happen as it would require equipment, labor, and probably legal waivers.

2) commentary on the matches. Again I guess this is unreasonable because you can't really watch all of the matches to give us a detailed report, but I'm dying to know how things actually went down, lol.

Other than those very unreasonable suggestions, I think you did a very good job keeping us informed about how the tournament was going. Who played what, who played against whom, who won, what else could we really ask for? Thank you so much Shad0w.

I do know somebody that can do both. He works in the movie industry so he has all the video and audio equipment, but like anybody else he would need to get paid for the work. I know his day rate  :o and I do not see this happening anytime soon.  8) Thanks for the feedback.

I don't know of any good programs to use, but I am curious what the official scoring system is? I had heard it was something like:

Win = 5 points
Timed win = 3 points
Draw = 1 point
Loss = 0 points

Is this correct? If so, what about the following:

Buy = 5 points or 3 points?
Timed loss = 1 point or 0 points?

Assuming the above is correct and assuming a buy is worth 3 points, I come up with the following:

Josh = 20 points
Thomas = 8 points
Carlos = 8 points
Jackson = 5 points
Alex = 5 points

Assuming the above is correct and assuming a buy is worth 3 points, I come up with the following:

Josh = 20 points
Thomas = 8 points
Carlos = 8 points
Jackson = 5 points
Alex = 5 points

It was 3 points for a win and 1 for a tie

In addition to that 5 tiebreaker points for Win before time
3 for timed win
Loss was 0 TB points

Drops removed you from standings

Josh      12 + 20 tbp
Thomas 06 + 08 tbp
Jackson 03 + 05 tbp + Strength of schedule
Carlos   03 + 05 tbp + Strength of schedule
(Carlos did not get a win credit for round 2 software does not credit byes)

Alex      03 + 05 tbp (Dropped)

So with a tie for 3rd it looked at strength of schedule. When it did the math overall it said Thomas was worth more points on ties than Jackson was. That is why Carlos got 4th and Jackson got 3rd. Even though Carlos won v Jackson in round 4. I can agree with that since Thomas won against 2 players.

If it was a win because the other play no showed it would have been 3 points 5 tbp and the player that did not show is auto dropped.

Thank you for sharing that. I can see where my info was off by not distinguishing tie breaker points.

Big thing is none of the swiss tourney software I found would let me do a 5/3 win. Only 3 or 2 and  for draws 2, 1, or 0 points and 1 or 0 loss

Perhaps an annotation system would be handy (like they have in chess)? People at home could do it themself. Players in tourneys could do it if they feel they could still focus on the match. Volunteers could be drafted to annotate the more important rounds.

(Man i hate foruming on my phone :p )

Ooh an idea just popped into my head as i hit submit. Perhaps there could be an app for that...

We tried something like that at Origins and Gencon last year. Even knowing they had to do it some players did not. So when it came time to verify for draw breaker they could not and the other person got the win.

Unless it was as simple as the chess anotation system (e.g. e2-e4), I would find it time consuming and distracting. I don't really see a simple system happening for this game, either.

Perhaps I should dust off my Android development for dummies book and get busy lol

If you are talking about annotating the specific moves made during a game, there has been talk about a system (http://forum.arcanewonders.com/index.php?topic=13349.0) for that, but you are correct it wouldn't be too simple. I myself posted a quite detailed solution that is semi functional but isn't really very practical.

What about voice recorders? If players announce every move they make, then the voice recorder will make the game log from that. Simply label the rows and columns of the arena and pause the recorder during the planning phase.

How would you enforce that all player bring a voice recorder?
What about reviewing a game how would this be done in a timely manner without slowing down the rest for the games?

Sell voice recorders to players as part of tournament registration (assuming they don't already have one)

If you need to review the game log mid game for whatever reason, you'll need to rewind to the correct round and stage, then after you're done reviewing continue the recording where the game left off.

One simple method to collecting commentary on the matches is to provide each board a commentary card. Players are asked up front to discuss the match at the end and record their answers to a basic question or two. Each player can have a different response for the same question. some examples are:
1. What was the turning point in the battle?
2. Why did mage x win?
3. Why did mage y lose?
4. What would you have done differently as mage X/Y?

The tournament director would then have content available at the end of the event to provide highlights for select matches along with any notes collected personally while observing the matches.
