Title: How big are the central hearthlands?
Post by: Sailor Vulcan on April 29, 2015, 06:56:43 AM
I need to know how big they are so I can estimate how long it would take to fly over the Darfenne on an enchanted gorilla if they flew as high as they could go without risk of suffocation or freezing from the cold from the high altitudes.

Thanks!

There is a way how to estimate average fly speed of gorilla enchanted by eagle wings?

An African gorilla or a European gorilla?

Ha ha ha. I'm obviously not being that precise. I just want to know if it takes minutes, hours or days. That's why I'm asking how big the central hearthlands are. Are they about the size of Ohio? Or Texas? Or Australia? Or Europe? Or the indian ocean?

Perhaps my favorite question ever.  ;D

The Central Heartlands occupies the region bordered by The Diamond Sea to the north, The Great Etherian Ocean and the Terevian Bight (where the Blood Wave is) to the West, The Stellaran Massif to the east, and The Veridian Sea to the south.

This area resembles “Europe” in size and topography -- so figure out how long it would take for a gorilla to fly from Portugal to Ukraine, and you'll be in the ballpark.

I just realized that the Central Hearthlands are shaped like Europe but upside down and backwards.

There are gorillas in europe? And that band on their europe tour doesnt coutn! ;)

Well, thing is, how Eagle wings works. Yes, it is enchantement but is it gonna hold that long? Isnt there any limit how long this spell exist? Gorilla can weight from 120 to 180 kilos. Count in a mage (80 kilos) and we are about 250 kilos. Mage riding a gorilla with eagle wings will not be too much into aerodynamics. Eagles fly 45–51 km/h  - 28-32 mph. Lets take winds and counter winds into account, weight of a mage = cca 60 km per hour. They can travel 12 hours per day (fatigue, day light and pee pauses with breaks for food) that could be 720 km per day :)

and if you also use cheetah speed and bear strength? Could you then have it carry two mages and a morga all the way to Victoria?

According to the novel there doesn't seem to be such a limit, but a mage can supposedly dismiss a creature at will. Not sure about enchantments. This seems at odds with game play though

You forced me to think about it. Bear strenghts, Rhino Hide, Cheetah Speed, Cobra Reflexes... this all are aspects enchancing the creature. Eagle wings are so far only enchantement which actualy giving something (wings). Everything else is a boost of their actual performance. Are there any specific rules on that?

Turtle Shell, Porcupine Spikes or Fish Lungs would be other possible enchantements which will give something instead of boosting.

Does it have to be gorila? What about Grifin? Or levitation spell? Or realy big goblin catapult?

Mixture of enchantements in a transportation seems a relly good combo.

What about gorila transporting them to safety and then recast for more suitable creature? :)

Thoughtspores probably can't support their weight even with flying and bear strength.

The only other option is animals. I considered having the protagonists of my fanfic go meet Tarok the Sky Hunter so they can get permission to summon him to fly them over. But that seemed like a long and difficult process when Digur isn't permitted to continue tarrying in the straywood and Lithann is supposed to be escorting him out. Plus, there's a chance that they might not get the Skyhunter's approval for some reason, in which case they'd be stuck anyway.

I wonder how Lithann's parents took her to Victoria to watch the arena duels? Did they summon their own flying animals?

Griffons are used in Westlock, both for combat and for transportation. Maybe Lithann's parents chartered one.
