Alternative Play / "Pure chess" Mage Wars
« on: March 07, 2013, 06:02:23 PM »
I was wondering if anyone had thought about trying a "pure chess" (i.e. nonrandom) version of Mage Wars. Obviously, it would require a lot of changes, damage would be converted to an automatic 1 point per die with half of that (probably rounding up) being critical. Attack effects that use the effect die would have to go, or be replaced by an alternating counter that lets the effect land every other hit. The same is true for defenses. Inevitably, there would be some cards that just wouldn't work.

Still, I think it would be interesting. It would allow you to think further ahead.  Obviously, this would slow the game down and make it less casual, but it would also make the game even deeper and more analytical.

Rules Discussion / Charm and taunt
« on: March 06, 2013, 10:28:00 PM »
If a Forcemaster has charmed Thorg, is it still legal for Thorg to "taunt" the Forcemaster?

Thereby making the Forcemaster attack Thorg and break the charm, of course.

(They have a complicated relationship.)

Rules Discussion / Hindering, flying, and timing
« on: March 01, 2013, 03:24:02 PM »
If a creature is hindered, does that fact stay with them through the rest of their action no matter what, or can that later be negated?

For example:

1) Suppose I have a non-flying creature (with hidden enchantments) and there are enemy non-pest, non-flyers everywhere. I activate the creature and move it one square, it should now be hindered. If, at this point, I reveal an "eagle wings" or "mongoose agility" enchantment on the creature, is it now free to move a second space, since flyers and elusive creatures are not hindered by ground creatures?

If the answer to the above is, "Nope, still hindered" then I have a follow up question:

2) If a naturally flying creature is guarding in a space with a non-flying enemy. Will it be hindered when it takes its next action? That is, does the guard trait (that is removing its flying ability) disappear before the creature starts its turn? Or is it removed right afterwards, implying that the flyer is still hindered from having started its turn on the ground?

Rules Discussion / Wall of Pikes facing?
« on: February 26, 2013, 03:26:45 PM »
I'm wondering if the caster is free to choose any direction for the "Wall of Pikes" card. I realize that the flavor text says "always make sure the pointy end is facing the enemy", but is it actually illegal to set it up with the pikes facing the caster?*

Also, if you choose to extend the spell, does the facing have to be the same for both parts of the wall, or could you set up a 2-square linear wall with one section facing left and the other facing right?

*The tactic I'm thinking of here is using inward facing pikes to trap an opponent into a corner along with my forcemaster. The forcemaster can do solid damage with Galvitar up close. And not only does the opponent take damage if he runs away, but you can suck him right back in cheaply with your force pull! Best of all, if your opponent summons in lots of creatures to help him out in there, a simple 4-mana "Repulse" spell will damage every other creature in there with you, either by pushing them through the pikes, or smacking them into the walls. Unlike all the other force-pushing spells, "Repulse" doesn't seem to have any restrictions about pushing through passage-attacks walls.

Rules Discussion / Questions on Steal Equipment and Mind Control
« on: February 25, 2013, 11:14:29 PM »
Hi, I have a couple of rules questions that came up because of new cards in the expansion.

1) When a spell has a phrase like "Forcemaster Only" or " Mind Mage Only" are these restrictions that apply only to the spells that you are allowed to put in your spellbook, or are other mages forbidden from controlling (or equipping) these cards as well? For example, could a wizard cast "steal equipment" on a forcemage's Galvitar and equip it themselves? Also, can a wizard cast "steal enchantment" on a "mind control" spell, thereby gaining control of "mind control" as well as the creature it was cast on? If a forcemaster steals a warlock's mage wand that had "drain life" bound to it, could she use it?

2) How does "mind control" work when cast on familiars? Can you use them to cast a spell that was set aside for them by their original owner? What if the spell is bound, as in the case of the thoughtspores?
