General Discussion / Re: Conquest of Kumanjaro - SPOILERS
« on: May 08, 2013, 01:06:03 AM »
This is a cool card. Just wondering how I could afford this in my Warlord spell book? It is just 2 mana too expensive.  It also has a limitation of just soldiers.

Can't wait to get that 8 point light soldier promo to be available so that would help my Warlord spellbook drastically.. But still this 14 point card is too expensive to cast by 2 mana.

I guess I need to mass 8 point light promo soldier (at least 3 in the field) + 1 Westlock Knight then cast this card for a quick finish.

With the ring of command it will drop the cast by 1 point.

Spellbook Design and Construction / Re: Damage over Time
« on: May 07, 2013, 10:16:05 PM »
Klaxas and I talked about a tactic that uses Idol of Pestilence, Poison Gas Cloud, Chains of Agony, Tangle Vine, Force Hold, Wall of stone, Ghoul Rot, and Teleport you lock the creatures in place and keep the Damage over Time eating away at creatures. To slow down your Damage use unicorn, Regrowth Belt, Tree of life. I also added Malcoda and Skeleton Solider into my build.

Another thing is use Wall Of Thorns and Force Push to knockback any threats and damage them.

Has anybody else tried something similar?

Have you tried this build?

What do you think Strengths / Weaknesses ?

I used this technique and pretty much destroyed my enemy Beastmaster.
I used my Wizard to pull this off.
I also mass Jinx + Nullify + mana + force hold + curses and Poison and Malacoda. I have 6 Jinxes and each turn the person is stuck in poison and taking at least 7 damage each turn from all the curses, poison and others.
While I am destroying the opposing mage, I am also force holding all the other creature and they all died in poison damage.

I did not need any Wall of Thorns anymore. All you need is all the DOT plus poison. Malacoda + Skeletal soldier is all you need.  You also need dispel, dissolve and teleport in your build. Magewand Teleport.

Due to my mass Jinx and my opponent did not expect this type of mage build, he pretty much waste each turn trying to remove the curses (and failed) or my Mind spell Force Crush (Upkeep 4) but they are unmovable (they can't cast push on themselves) + they take 2 damage.

Due to the level of opponent I have is so good, I was only able to put Ghoul Rot + Force Crush + Poison up to the point the opponent died from it. I was not able to bring out Malacoda but I was able to bring out Idol of Pestilence. So really each turn my opponent takes automatic 7 damage + my range attack spells as Wizard.

So both of us are taking damage each turn and all the beastmaster creatured died after a few turns.

Spells / Re: Helm of Fear
« on: April 26, 2013, 02:22:02 AM »
None of the magewars defenses work against my spellbook anymore (especially my Wizard or Warlock deck). I just use direct damage for the most part or also known as upkeep damages.

If I see the Helm of Fear, I would probably dissove it but better yet if I am playing warlock versus warlock I would Explode it (Incantation).

Most of my game play I don't see it in anybodys spellbook. I don't even put it in mine. For the mana, I would just use other armor enchants or leather boots and gloves.

General Discussion / Anybody going to Chicago C2E2 tomorrow?
« on: April 26, 2013, 02:16:33 AM »
Just wondering.

I saw in one of the games in the Chicago convention Friday to Sunday that there is some free game for Magewars. I am wondering if this is being done by a vendor or just by a fan?

The convention has the normal comics + movies crowd but they have some gaming. The convention is in McCormick Center (biggest convention center in Chicago).

I'll see if I bring some of my spell books tomorrow if anybody shows up for some gaming or I can just play and demo it for others to see (I'll just beat my co-worker) with my own spell book (knowing that he would not know how to play it). I demoed the game to at least 2 co-workers and at least one bought his own core set. The other one has not bought yet because he probably just need to pick one up in a store if he sees one. He may pick up one tomorrow if there is a vendor over there that sells Magewars.

Not sure if Arcane Wonders will show up in Chicago convention this weekend.

Anyway, if I do not see Arcane Wonders this weekend, I'll just shoot to see them in Gencon.

Rules Discussion / Re: Sectarus the dark rune sword
« on: April 26, 2013, 12:11:21 AM »
-Sectarus for me is just a back up for the Lash.
- I could not bring it out for its cost unless I play the forge.
- The Warlock Familiar promo is better (can't wait for him to be part of the expansion).
- With my Warlock being aggressive, I always get push away, teleported away, force held, tanglevine and all the other possible ways to push me, the Sectarus seems a waste for 10 points.

I used my warlock with all curses works well (2 range for all my curses). Just mass curses + mass spells + mass imps.

Mage Bane is awesome!!!
Burn is awesome as well.

Osutra (owl) could have ability which allows her to take back used spell and put it to the her owner's spell book (probably with some restrictions).

And this would be an OP card (over powered). My reasons: I planned exactly when to dispel or counter their enchants (forcefield) then you are telling me that there is a way to bring it back?

Last time I heard from another card game - Monster Reborn was banned..(or was that change of heart?) - nevermind. I play mage wars so long with all the counters and adding it again in the game may be too strong. But that is just me. Our normal game play here is like 3 hours long with all the counters and anticipating of when to counter what card.

Ha!  No worries guys - that is a minor or secondary ability at best.

So, does anyone have any ideas for her owl familiar Osutra?  What would you like to see it do?

Also, the new Beastmaster has a pet hunting falcon, Skree. Please share your thoughts!

Beastmaster do need a familiar that can do:

[ul]
[li] range attack (i.e. attack spells)[/li]
[li] or better yet the falcon is flying sky high so the bird can notify fellow creatures to help the mage.[/li]
[/ul]

You may also represent "getting help" by the falcon/owl to use 1 mana to move a friendly animal one space away in a direction of the owners mage discretion and 4 mana to move up to 2 animals up to 2 spaces instead. In essence, scout for help or search for allys.

During my play testing with the Beastmaster, he always needs help in positioning his animals to properly attack. Helps the Beastmaster in positioning his attacks.

Player Feedback and Suggestions / Re: A variant that plays faster
« on: April 17, 2013, 10:03:34 PM »
After competing multiple times and each time we get better and better our hours of game increased!
We play to a point that our spell books are almost out of cards. 3 to 4 hour games. It's like each card or spell we played gets countered the following turn and both our lives are about 1 to 5 left each after 3 to 4 hours. This mean we have figured out how how to build our deck that pretty much counter each other. We have 2 core sets 2 spell tome 1 1 spell tome 2 and 2 force master and warlord expansion.

Our answer to this speed up----> half life. It works!! We now play for half an hour of multi countering to the point that we satisfy our Mage wars itch and we get even better in speed killing or speed defending. We congratulate each other for a fast finish.

I just order from Amazon or Ebay.. I got all the needed tokens and spell books easy. I did order from this website for 3 spellbooks without issue just 1.5 weeks ago.

My point with a Goblin Builder, nobody really cares much about him.
He can go to the other side of the arena board without anybody paying close attention to him then the following occurs:

- New spawn point or tower
- New catapult (that will bombard the conjuration)

His use is really for you to do something that nobody expects..

Yeah mana is an issue with Warlord but I used my goblin builder to wake up my sleeping 2 Attack die flingers (due to Mass sleep). If I didn't have him on the board my sleeping range guys will never wake up from the onslaught of the Forcemaster. And the forcemaster didn't really care much about him (just let him be the builder).

He is in the lowest point of priority in any battle - which could be advantageous if you know that nobody really attacks him.

Aside from the normal fix buildings the Goblin builder is not used a lot.

For some reason, this Goblin builder always gets push aside but these are the techniques I used or am planning on using him..

1) Goblin Builder to set traps Mangler Caltrops
2) Goblin Builder to set walls on unsuspecting escapee or would be attacker.
3) Goblin Builder to walk away from battle and setup the catapult from a distance.
4) Goblin Builder to build towers for placement
5) Goblin Builder walking around the Arena building temples (you can play this with Mass temples).
- Use the one that either gives you reroll or the one that gives you +1 melee/+1 defense or heal.
6) Goblin Builder to wake up sleeping allies with 2 attack dice.

Even though the Mangler Caltrops does not damage them when you cast it in a zone with enemy creatures, they still get hindered though..

Questions:
1) Did you ever use the Goblin Builder successfully and what did he do?
2) Do you use the Goblin Builder normally as part of your force or do you strip down your Warlord deck to not include him?

Recently I have been stripping him out of my Warlord deck but plan on using him on speciality deck (mass temples) and others..

Knockdown and Tanglevine combo well to put action exhausted fliers permanently on the ground so melee non-flyers can deal damage. :

I would cast Maim Wings instead. Save Tanglevine or Knockdown for other creatures or mage.

General Discussion / Re: Just one: Spell tome 1 or spell tome 2
« on: April 01, 2013, 11:39:55 PM »
I have 2 core sets + 2 spell tome 1 + 1 spell tome 2 + 2 FM vs Warlord sets and 13 spell books.

I don't think I have enough cards especially if you build all the spell books for 2 v 2.

Every spell book seems to need Nullify and that is in limited supply if spread out among all the spell books. Me and my son try not to touch each others spell books. We try to face each other and not show our spell books.

That is the fun of it.

I would do Spell tome 1 AND spell tome 2 (Both) unless you like redoing your spell book each time. I like to leave mine intact for the most part and just change a few if needed.  Another thing you may try is 2 core sets this way you can play 2 v 2. I went overboard with 2 copies of each because I bought my son and myself our own copy.

Strategy and Tactics / Re: More newbie help
« on: April 01, 2013, 11:24:50 PM »
Wall is your friend :)

That will buy you enough time to get close to dissolve it but you may do this 2 things in order:

Put decoy on your enemy mage - this should trigger any Nullify (If there is any face down card on your enemy mage) and then cast either steal item or dissolve.
