This is the official thread for the Gen Con 2016 Championship!!!
My name is Benjamin "Silverclaw Grizzly" Burton and I, along with my team will be your judges for this years event. We are delighted to be returning and hope to have a fun and competitive tournament at Gen Con this year.
Oh.....but we're uh....bringing a few more friends with us this year...

Ok now that Origins is over here's the format and rules:
The Gen Con Championship is a Swiss Round event set for 5 rounds on the Friday of Gen Con and then Finals that Saturday. Each round is 75 minutes long. There are 4 possible results a player can achieve each round:
-Full Victory: You killed the enemy mage. Simple as that. First mage to dies loses.
-Modified Victory: If time runs out and both mages are alive then the mage with the most life left wins.
-Draw: If time runs out and both mages have equal life remaining then a draw occurs. This is rare.
-Lose: If you mage dies or time runs out and you have less life then you lost.
Points will be awarded depending on how you do each round. At the end of 5 rounds we look first at Win/Loss record and determine who advances to the next day. In case of tie on Win/Loss then we'll look at points. Top 4 Mage Warriors at the end of Day 1 are invited to compete in the finals on Day 2.
Spell books should be 120 points and may include cards from any expansion that releases at least 30 days before Gen Con. As of now this list includes: Mage Wars Core Set, Force Master vs Warlord, Conquest of Kumanjaro, Druid vs Necromancer, Forged in Fire, Mage Wars Arena: Domination, Mage Wars Academy Core Set, Mage Wars Academy: Priestess. Spell books will be checked in prior to the event.
Materials for each match will be provided. These will include maps, status trackers, dice, tokens, and action counters. If you would like to use magnetic trackers or other accessories you have brought that is fine so long as your opponent has no objection. Also copies of all current rules and erratas will be on hand.
This tournament has four judges. The judges will be there to assign match ups, answer rules questions, and maintain a friendly environment. In case of an odd number of players a judge will play as a bye round. The bye round will count as a win and scored depending on how you do against the judge.
Prize support for this event will include but is not limited to trophies, product, and art. In addition to prize support for the winners there will be promo cards for all entrants as well as drinks, snacks, and general refreshments.
Arcane Duels will be on hand to film the event and talk to competitors.

I really feel for you folks overseas especially. I live in indy and consider myself super lucky gencon is here. For anyone arriving in town for gencon earlier than wednesday let me know. Perhaps we can work staying here at my place the weekend before, mon/tues. I usually get a hotel room wed-sat even though I live here. easier than struggling with parking, driving sleep deprived etc. but if folks arrive early before any hotel reservations, I can help with a place up to the convention.

Make no doubt about it, we are going all out this year. Prize support, refreshments, everything we can think of to make it as great an experience as possible. It is my hope to see some of the best in the world compete at this tournament. You win this one and we tell the whole world you're the real goods.

Competitors from Canada, Japan, and Denmark are already confirmed to be in attendance :) I consider this the Mage Wars World Championship for a reason ;)

In a recent interview Bryan Pope stated that PvS will be available at Gen Con. Let me go ahead and answer the questions I know are going to come up: YES if PvS is available at Gen Con it WILL be part of the Gen Con tournament prize support. NO it's not legal to play ;) In fact a set or expansion has to be out 30 days to be legal.

You probably need to add "Mage Wars Academy: Warlock" to the list of allowed products, as it was available the same day as the Priestess.

Nothing would make me(not to mention Sharkbait) happier than to do just that. However the official street release isn't until next month for Academy Warlock and thus it's not available to the mass market yet. Product has to be in stores 30 days prior to an event I'm afraid.

I can confirm it. Distributor in Europe have different dates for Priestess and Warlock and also Mr. Laddifance stated somewhere that Warlock is arriving one month after Priestess.

20 days left and 7 spots remain. That means we're already tied with the total number of entrants last year at 17 competitors. Note that this time next year were weren't even in the single digits yet so the odds that we'll cap are very high indeed.
I think I speak for a lot of us when I say I'm VERY interested in seeing what is brought to this event, what makes the Top 4, and what walks out Gen Con Champion.

Hope you guys like Pepsi products cause it was Buy 2, Get 3 Free on 12 packs when I went to go get refreshments for the tournament. Also I'd like to introduce our 5th Judge "Little Debbie" who will be providing snacks to help fight off terrible late round hunger pains. Carbs are good for thinking and my local Necromancers tell me they make souls sweeter to drain.
Also I'll be bringing some "good sportsmanship" alternate art promo cards as well....no not the paladin and siren they got those at the booth :)

Yeah, we expect to make this an even greater year than last time. Higher attendance from all over, food for participants, trophies, mages retooled with acadamy cards... By all estimations, this tournament's going to be a blast.
We're still waiting for the inevitable crush of late entries; last year we had quite a few, and we expect the already large tournament size to keep growing.

Also thank you PuddinHead. We've a very knowledgeable and capable staff and while this event may not be perfect....it won't be from lack of trying. This is THE tournament in THE USA and it's gonna be awesome.
As a side I wanna say it's going to be awesome working with Arcane Fuels again. Those guys are real contenders giving up their shots at the trophy to cover the event for the rest of us.

I learn so much about spellbook building and gameplay from the examples and writeups after these tournaments! Wish I could go in person, but, still, thanks so much for doing these events!

Oh one thing I forgot to mention. We're supplying maps, dice, and some tokens but if folks could bring their own specialized tokens such as Pet, Vines, etc that'd help a lot.

Warlord winning would silence a lot of haters. Warlock, Beast Master, and Wizard have won. By my math that makes Priestess due and I have to say she has every tool she needs to do it.

I expect the most likely to win is Druid or Anvil Throne Warlord, and if not them then the wizard or priestess.

I am hoping for Priest with Academy Priestess Cards. But my guess that players will not "risk" to play with decks that they didnt have a proper time to test and tune up.

Boocheck that is some sound logic. I expect we'll see more Priestess this year than last year for sure. I also think though that not all opponents are going to be familiar with what the new Priestess can do. I was caught totally off guard at a recent major tournament locally and got smashed. I'm a pretty good player and I have to assume that if I could fall prey to it so could others. A wily veteran player could be banking on taking at least one person in a 5 round event off guard.

I'm just hoping to see a necromancer make it to the semi-finals. He doesn't have to win, I just want to see some top level necro games. Our local meta only really has two styles for him at the moment.

Our local Force Master, Sarah, went through her book last night saying "If any scrubs challenge me I'm winning."
Our Warlock discussed ways to transition the super high offense of his book into a slow burn late game.
JasonBourneZombie excitedly sent me a text stating that we leave tomorrow.
Our Druid is coming over so we can hit up Sams Club for supplies.
Jimillia prepared her Necromancer with "extra hate" in case she has to be the bye round.
The 4th judge, a young man named James, works a 10 hour shift today then drives over to rest here over night before leaving with us tomorrow morning.
I'm packing spell books, tokens, and my Arcane Wonders Ambassador shirts.
Charlotte is ready. Charlotte is coming to Gen Con!

I would love for a Necro to make it through. I don't recall there ever being one at Gencon making it to top 4.
Last year the only Necromancer I remember competing was relatively new and was eliminated fairly early. I'd like to see some more of the dark side this year too.

12 players. My bad on Shark he's Adramelech Warlock. He's 2- 0 right now. All Necromancers are skeleton. Biblofilter is one and undefeated fighting the Charlotte entry Mr Rose and his Druid.

Also, as far as I know there is only one other Mage Wars Arena player in Columbus Ohio (or at least there's only one other who has a Facebook account) and that is after Origins has come and gone four times. And now this. This is really making me worry about how things are going for this game.

Yes; it's not nice to see such a game be left alone by so many. Perhaps it was the delay of the multiple announced expansions for Arena, or maybe it's because Mage Wars is a game that has a limited amount of replayability, just like any other game.
Mind you, there are people like me who are younger, who cannot drive and also live in areas where there are no events taking place {take Montreal as my personal example}; and just because a person buys the base Arena game box, doesn't mean he/she is on the forums or that he/she knows about the expansions.

I'll respond later when I'm not busy having a blast at Gen Con. For now cool it with the skies falling stuff. I know why the turn out was what it was. It's got nothing to do with doom and gloom. Also perhaps not be fast to nay say before facts are known?

Only a fool count its wealth by the number of steeds :) One horse that can win any race is more worthy then a hundred horses that can plow the field. (proverb of some south state).
What kind of fears are that? We are in the middle of best times of mage wars! Lets call it summer! If there is no MW players around you, became ambassador. If noone around you is interested in Mage Wars, then you live in Dessert, you need different approach or they are not ready for a game of such caliber :)

Bout to head to a session but I will say this: I saw some of the best matches I have ever seen today. The final four are Biblofilter(Necromancer), Sharkbait(Warlock), Mr Rose (Druid) and Aaron (Force Master.) All 4 showed skill and adaptability to impress.

i played badly. sorry to say i was not much competition this year. unlike three of the last four years where i was playing in the last match for the win. first time not making finals in any of the events i have entered. sigh.
i was not able to make up my mind on what mage to play until literally the morning of the qualifiers. never a good sign. i was not overally happy with my build and not comfortable playing it. i settled on a wizard thinking it would still feel about the same flowi wise, it did not, and my games were very unfocused. it has been three years since playing air wizard. could not get the flow working right. symptom of indecision about getting a mage built and playing matches to tune it. as it ended up that in my final qualifier match who ever won it would get a spot in the finals. i played poorly and my opponent played well, and ended up winning.
griz is correct that there were some great matches, and stellar play. the four finalists certainly earned their position and i know tomorrow will again see some great matches. good luck to each of them.
feel for those who could not be here gencon is awesome. hopefully next year more of you can make it. it will be gencon 50th anniversary year. should be spectacular event.

I've learned some very nasty new tricks watching some of these games. Stuff I would have never even considered that made me think "You sly old dog.... I'm gonna have to steal that. Shark pulled a good one where his opponent went to Purify and he Enchantment Transfusion a Nullify I fed Meath him.

I promise I will post a full tournament report when I get home to Charlotte. I do want to mention some things.
1. This was the smoothest tournament I've ever run. Thank you to my team of Jimillia, James, and especially Jason Bourne Zombie.
2. Even better than the insane skill put on display I saw even greater sportsmanship. Everyone who played did so with respect and class.
3. Yeah Paladin/Siren was popular at Gen Con lol. Understatement of the year but product was flying off shelves. Arena, Academy,and everything else had to constantly never endingly be restocked.

I kind of got off to a bad start in the final vs. Larrick (Druid) but we had a history. Anyway that game was very different from our first encounter.

I kind of got off to a bad start in the final vs. Larrick (Druid) but we had a history. Anyway that game was very different from our first encounter.

Congratulations to Biblo. This was one of the most impressive books and skilled players I have seen yet at Gen Con. It's great to see that we have not reached the skill ceiling on this game yet!

I would love for a Necro to make it through. I don't recall there ever being one at Gencon making it to top 4.
Last year the only Necromancer I remember competing was relatively new and was eliminated fairly early. I'd like to see some more of the dark side this year too.
I remember he played both graveyard and libro against me, and never had mana to get enough creatures out last year.
