Strategy and Tactics / Re: Can Certain Mages Not win vs Others?!
« on: March 25, 2017, 03:50:09 PM »
To answer your question: NO, every mage has the potential of beating another mage.

Since this game is designed around diffrent mages and diffrent schools you will always have one mage with an advantage/disadvantage.

I would never claim that a matchup is unwinnable. It more or less comes down to player experince with diffrent mages and how to play diffrent ways with books you've designed.

I'd bet my money on Necro/Druid/Wizard.

While I rank most mages a lot closer in terms of standings I do consider these three mages to be the top dogs.

What I want to win:
Anvil Throne Warlord
Paladin
Adramelech Warlock

Events / Re: New Ambassador - advice for first demo to the public?
« on: January 18, 2017, 08:28:23 PM »
Congratulations on your success so far! Here's basic advice:

1. If you can advertise. A flyer or post on their social media.

2. Set up Arena and Academy and give people the option of which to play.

3. Have some snacks if possible. Market research shows gamers like snacks.

4. Bring help. Have your friend play casual games using pre made books. Coach the new players but don't dictate.

5. Make pre made books that use simple tricks like a Red Claw canine swarm or a Curse- lock.

6. Go back regularly.

This is pretty much what you should do.

When it comes to premade books, I'd suggest having maybe books with spellbook value of 70, and that really shows the core concept of each mage. This is to demonstrate the differences between them and their strengths. I'd suggest using simple enchantments, that don't require much knowledge of the game in general e.g. Bear Strength, Hawkeye, Rhino Hide, Ghoul Root.

If no one has developed it, there is a reason behind it.
Just drop using spellbooks if you feel they are to much of a hassle, and go with deck boxes instead.

Events / Re: ADMW Winter Special - OCTGN Tournament
« on: January 16, 2017, 01:07:52 AM »
I also like to point out that rolling more dice on octagon by mistake is a lot more common than in real life, at least for me. Since Octagon works so well, you can be caught off-guard the few times the wrong amount of dice is there.

I've always played that you re-roll all of your die, since, in theory, it shouldn't change the outcome of the attack and that has been the norm of 99% of my octagon matches. Perhaps also stating what rules are for dice and re-rolls might be needed if people get to heated about this issue.

However, if you manually add more die to roll, the dmg step is not automated so it would be easy to catch someone who is actively trying to "get more good rolls" however, I can not think of one time that has been an issue.

When it comes to notes and online play, I do not know in what capacity you're able to check if someone would be using notes, but I guess that might be an issue if you were only playing one deck for a longer tournament. But that could be fixed by having private matches, with the only the judge being in the lobby beside the players, and everyone agreeing not to say anything about the games they play. So unless its a 1 deck tournament, I see absolutely no problems with notes, and I have no idea as to why anyone would consider it cheating. If you are playing vs someone who relies on following a set script for the first few rounds, I'd say you are playing against someone who is not comfortable playing their deck.

However, we've moved away from 1deck tournaments as of late and I think that's a really good approach to the game, especially since we have a really passionate community that loves to play and watch other play!

Strategy and Tactics / Re: Best opening for: Druid
« on: November 28, 2016, 01:27:52 AM »
I've tried a lot of different openers.
I've found that Vine Tree is my tree of choice and is always one of my actions in turn 1.
When it comes to my second spell, I've run with both Mana flower(why mana crystal?), leaf ring and even tried to spice it up a bit with meditation amulet.

It all depends on your book, but my choice is mainly to start with vine tree and mana flower. It's a stable opener for me since it doesn't really show any intention of what I'm doing.

The ring is really good when you want to build up a strong early economy, which can build momentum with the vine creatures being cheap and being able to spawn two creatures in a round, deploying + full action, to catch people off guard is always a nice play to do.

I used to run mediation amulet for a while to punish greedy builds by having my vine tree deploy vine creatures, me meditating, and gain a big momentum with the extra dice my creatures would bring to the table, especially when they do not have a deploy point.

I'd say there is never a "best opener" since it all depends on your opponents deck and your own, but If I would have to nominate an opener as the strongest, mana flower + vine tree would be my choice.

I actually don't like the feed big k strat. Tbh its really funny to watch and a wonderfully creative idea, but every time ive faced one ive beaten it.

I do agree.
If you want to include Kralathor in your book, that's great.
He is a really cool creature that works wonders vs minor creatures and undead opponents.
And I think these situations are the only situations he should be played. Put him in play, buff him with rhino hide and perhaps bear strength and let him do his magic.

If u want to invest into a nature creature I would suggest using the Steelclaw Grizzly instead, gets a higher amount of dice faster, has more Armor and with a regrowth on him he becomes very hard to kill.

Spells / Re: How do you play with druid's plants?
« on: July 31, 2016, 09:30:11 PM »
Use the vine tree, spread vines and start to take over the map.
Be smart about what creatures and conjurations you use, make sure they fit the game and your game plan.

I prefer spreading 2vine markers a turn which gives u faster "control" of the map since you'll be able to punish more defensive enemy conjurations easier, while also being able to slow the opponent if they are going very aggressive.

The druid is all about being able to control the other Mage, make them react to you.
Having the Vine Tree there to help you gain more actions than the other mage helps you snowball more and more into a position where you could potentially overwhelm them. Because they won't be able to deal with the things you do in an effective manner.

Off topic / Mage Wars Discord Channel (VOIP)
« on: July 25, 2016, 10:04:43 AM »
Hello there!

I've started a Discord Channel for Mage Wars.

The main thought behind it was to have a common VOIP for the people that likes to play Mage Wars Online.
If you want to talk while playing on Octagon or just talk about Mage Wars in general, you are free to use the channel.

You can download discord here: https://discordapp.com/
and this is the server link: https://discord.gg/WbHH7h2

Perhaps get sharkbait involved, the magecasts have been great and having a weekly/monthly pod would help the site with traffic.

Beyond that, I could maybe write some articles or something but creating detailed match reports would be too much of a hazzle in my eyes. Perhaps get more people involved in recording and commentating their own games?

Basically bringing out more AD content? But just more people in the mix.

Resources and Downloads / Re: Wizard and Wizard's Tower Errata
« on: July 06, 2016, 05:59:42 AM »
I really like this Errata.

Fixing the Wizard's Tower and its ability to basically be a source of unlimited attack spells was a good target for nerfs. And I do believe this won't hit tower to hard in terms of what the card costs.

The Wizard being trained in Air and Arcane seems good to me, it might be too early to tell but it feels like it's the natural way to limit the big books that you were able to build when you could choose an element.

I think this is a really good change since this should knock the Wizard of his throne while still not making him a bad mage.

General Discussion / Re: Mystery's thoughts about a lot of things
« on: June 22, 2016, 04:23:39 AM »
Thanks so much for sharing Mystery.

These are great ideas and tips from an experienced player that we can all use to improve our game play.

Basically this :)

I really like how you stress the importance of timing, especially when using Mage Wands. I have a friend who likes to cast them and maybe just get one use out of them instead of multiple. In those cases, I come out on top because I pay 5 mana and 1 action to deny his wand which is 5mana + card.

After a really intense and fast match vs Juli, my Necromancer was able to kill his Wizard.

Also played vs gaspode77, my druid won after an extremely close game over his Wizard.

I played Coshade yesterday.
I played the Anvil Throne Warlord and he played the Druid.

My Warlord came out victorious in what was a very close game, I thank Akiro!
If I'm not mistaken Coshade will release a video of the match.
