Three Amigos Warlord
« on: July 09, 2015, 08:42:35 AM »
THIS ORIGINAL POST HAS BEEN EDITED SINCE SOME OF THE ORIGINAL STATEMENTS WERE SHOWN TO BE ILLEGAL.  Apparently, Iron Golems are not legal recipients of either Bear's Strength or warlord's Battle Orders  :P :-[

I built this book with the concept that the Warlord should be played aggressively, and with his limited channeling is better off not wasting a lot of turns at the beginning building up outposts, etc.  Better to just use that mana to summon 2 creatures, kit yourself out with equipment and take the fight to the enemy.  I have played it so far with the Anvil Throne Warlord, and my opponent said that the crazy amount of equipment was what scared him the most, so Anvil Throne seems like the best option with their rune ability.

Ideally, you'd probably try to summon Thorg and Corazin, throw a cobra reflexes on Thorg at some point, a Bears Strength on Corazin, and move around as a group wrecking face.  Then you'd want things like rhino hide and bull's endurance on Thorg (and maybe Corazin, hence 2x of each in the book) and then focus on using Battle Fury (on your Helm of Command with Power rune, + Ring of Command, reducing the cost to 3 mana / turn) on Corazin.  You could also use Cantrip on the Helm, since it could be argued that it is more important than the mage wand + minor heal.  Both benefit from either rune, it's up to you to decide which will be targeted more aggressively.

I played this last night and got Eisenbach's Forge Hammer out quickly, + a battle forge.  Then, in the next couple turns I got a free Enchanter's Ring, paid 1 mana for a Ring of Command, and went on to get cheap harshforge plate, gauntlets of strength, helm of command, elemental cloak, etc.  The battleforge should pay for itself, if not give you extra mana income in the long run.  The real reason to use this is for the action economy, allowing you to still use a command incantation and an enchantment or attack each round while getting steadily stronger.

Near the end of the game, You could have Gurmash with a Battle Standard, Hand of Bim Shalla off to the side, & Helm of Command with Power Rune and Battle Fury buffing your Corazin (enchanted with Bear's Strength) into an 8 / 4 / 4 attack.  Corazin has 2 innate defense uses, and has the option to use Sweeping, giving him solid utility in to hit whatever you need him to hit in his zone.

What do you guys think about this book?  Do you see any stupid choices that I'd be better off changing out?  I wish it had Teleport, as well as a couple of other goodies, but there just isn't room for them with the Warlord's triple Arcane cost.

The battle orders of the Warlord only affect friendly soldiers, so the Iron Golems would be unaffected.

This idea seems interesting! I'll look at it later
First thing I noticed is that you can't put a bear's strength on an iron golem (they are not living)

Yeah I just noticed both of these things while looking through my spellbook, and came here to post that I apparently cheated a little last night during my game.  That definitely reduces the effectiveness of the Iron Golems in this book.  I am going to leave one of them in for games where having a nonliving might be nice (vs necro, for instance), but I think i'm going to change the other one to a minotaur.  Here is an updated spellbook getting rid of some things I didn't need, adding in some things that would be better, and giving me more utility using incantations.

The only bad thing about the Helm of Command is that anyone who understands its capabilities is going to instantly dissolve it, so I think the only viable rune on it in competitive play will be Cantrip.  That, or try to bait their dissolves before you show your helm.  Harshforge will help here too.  A power runed helm of command on a warlord with harshforge plate will cost almost twice what it cost to play it, (5 to play and 8 to dissolve).  Maybe an Armor Ward would fit well in this book specifically for this reason.

I love Armor Ward with the Anvil Throne Warlord. Also, you could just include a second Helm in the spellbook. Remove the Mage Wand and replace it with a Helm of Command and a Wand of Healing, and you're in a good spot. Also, you can run of power the Wand of Healing.

Hard casting those creatures might be tricky.

Yeah, could be, but I'm not running enough outposts in this build to make a barracks worth it IMO.  Additionally, you'd ideally only have 2-3 creatures total.  The rest are in there so you have options.

I'd think you would want Cheetah Speed and Mongoose Agility in there to assure your "Three Amigos" can reach their targets.  The Iron Golem really doesn't pair well with the rest of your deck, so you must have had some really bad experiences with poison in your games.

Thorg coupled with Iron Golem can seriously hurt your opponent's creatures.  Just pull them in and murder them.  Sure it's slow vs a swarm, but if you're fighting another book with just a few creatures you should be able to eliminate their damage dealers very effectively.
