Title: Spellbook Challenge!
Post by: Milevan_Faent on April 07, 2017, 06:30:42 PM
Dunno if this belongs here, but it's the most appropriate feeling to me, so here's what this is going to be.

You guys post a challenge. Give me some sort of concept for a spellbook. Can be pretty much anything, but it should be fairly specific. The wackier the idea, the better. I'll then take that and try (using my mediocre skills) to make a deck built around that idea. I'll then post it here for critique, and may even test it out in actual matches if it's not total garbage XD And even if it is garbage, I still want the challenge of trying to make it viable, even with the most unviable of concepts. So go crazy!

1) Dwarfs. Must have all the Dwarfs and want to use them + Hidden Tunnels :)

2) Asto Vidatu, Angel Slayer

3) Makunda

Not crayzy or anything :)

That's.... a bit too vague to really do anything with. Though I really want to find a way to work it.

Well, not too crazy at least ;p We'll see what happens with these.

Ive been wanting to make Slytherin theme book (because they're the best house in Harry Potter) but havent sat down to make it yet; but maybe you can give it a go. Use a necro or forceaster with mage and elemental wands, stonegaze basalisk and darkfene asps.
Also replicate the 3 unforgivable curses:

The Cruciatus Curse (Crucio) - force crush
The Imperius Curse  (Imperio) - demonic bloodlust if necro or mind control if forcemaster
The Killing Curse (Avada Kedavra) - drain soul for the final blow if necro or whatever you choose if forcemaster

I would like to see it more with a necro but mind control for the imperius curse seems too good to pass up :b

1) unicorns unite build!
2) All conjuration build with with a buddy using either a warlord, paladin, wizard, or Druid
3)  pirate Druid build (plants be Rrrrr friends)
4) all the growth creatures  and maybe some egg laying undead insects

The First One Is Done!

Gimmick: Dwarf Deck with Hidden Tunnels.

To meet the requirements of the theme, every Dwarf was used at least once. This means.... its expensive as hell to play anything. That would normally be too expensive to play at any decent speed. So, I countered the costs. Early game will focus on dropping Barracks for mana and action effeciency, then drop the Garrisons to allow you to call Dwarves wherever they are needed. Connect the rest of the field with an army of undestroyable tunnels, and suddenly you've got Dwarves coming out of the woodwork EVERYWHERE, able to jump from one spot to another as needed. At least, that's the idea.

And of course, YOU'RE a Dwarf, so you'd never sit out of the fight and leave it to just your army. You can gear up and jump into battle as time permits, using the Forge to save on mana and actions as well. And when the time to strike comes, give the orders with your Horn to power up for a Quick March on the enemy! Or, if you're in need of defense rather than offense, you can always Hold The Line.

And for a finishing blow, use Akiro's Battle Cry to get in that last blow of damage.

Here's number two!

Gimmick: Asto Vidatu, Angel Slayer

To make this deck work, I included two copies of the titular creature (just in case). The goal is T1 summon Vidatu, then spend the rest of the game supporting him. This means Enchanting and Healing him, while restricting and weakening the enemy mage. Your early game will probably be setting up your mana to support doing this, then spending the rest of your actions generally casting Enchants. Wandport will probably be a primary tool to help you support Vidatu. Vidatu should try to keep the enemy crippled so they cant run, and Weakened so they cant fight back, then go in for the kill when they can't do much about it.

Older book of mine with Makunda:

I have played it quite often and it works pretty well. However, I don't think I have posted the last update so it's probably a bit outdated.

I'd love to see a working life-absorber book. Main damage should come from siphon life, drain life and drain soul. I was working on that for a while but kind of gave up. Maybe fresh ideas from you could help!

You might as well help me with some of my spellbookprojects i dont really get started.

4. OK then what about Snakes on a Plane then?

I know flying Gorgon Archers has been done, and still is pretty good but im talking about flying Darkfenne Asp´s.

Beatsmaster pet and Felella to buff.

Druid might be fun also with the butterfly, Felella, Moonglow Faerie and naturally a flying asp, dog, cat or goat.
Kraken might be fun also - loose flying if he grapples something - so you could grapple something over a wall and then put it to the ground.

5. Tsunami

I want to use this spell more. Im still not quite sure how it works. So why not try it out outside Siren?

Same things goes for some of the other attack spells that goes beyond range 2: Dragons Breath, Hurl Meteorite, Thunderbolt, Chain Lightning.

Looking forward to see what you come up with!

Flying Asp sound pretty annoying. Funny that the buff is more expensive than the creature ;)

Tsunami with siren is good. Maybe simply focus on it and bring tsunami every second turn and fill others with ring, cheap stuff and walking

Well, I can see you're going to keep me busy. What did you think of what I've posted so far? Dwarves seems to be problematic so far, but that may well be because of a lack of skill rather than the book itself. I'm not the best at adapting.

And this is open to everyone. While I'm making random spell books, please, gimme feedback! This is as much a challenge for myself to try and come up with viable designs as it is to improve as a builder.

I know I'm skipping a bit, but this one was too good an idea to not make it when I was inspired. Freely admit I wasn't too sure what to do with it overall, but I felt you more wanted "Death Eater" rather than "Slytherin", which are two completely different things. But you specified wanting the Unforgivables, which is a Death Eater thing, so...

EDIT: Oh, and to clarify why I went with this over Necromancer: Necromancer brought nothing to the deck at all. This gave me Fiendfire, and a set of abilities that worked well with what I was doing.

I like it, I would not have thought of using the lady warlock for this build. I thought necro because the conditions that the reptiles bring are poison conditions and the plague master ability can be used.

And my Slytherin theme was mostly from Voldemort being my favorite character in HP and he was a slytherin and used some of these curses so that is how I came up with that.  The death eater thing is really cool too and I see how that would make more sense

And when thinking of bloodlust for the control curse, Chant of rage hadnt crossed my mind, shockingly because I use it in every deck lol.   but my initial thought was to throw demonic bloodlust on an enemy to keep them where you want them, controlling them.  If you put demonic blood lust on an enemy and they're forced to constantly attack an asp that has a 5+ dodge until they dispel it...that would get very annoying.  but chant of rage is a very good option too!

Overall, kudos for taking a cool and new approach to this concept! :) I like it!

Glad you like it. That was a tricky one. I'm a huge HP fan too though, so I had to. Even if there's only 5 HP books in my head-canon.... That said, you've made me consider making a counter-point to this deck using a Forcemaster, with their ability representing Protego. Though they'd probably be more Order of the Phoenix/DA/Gryffindor... I'm tempted to make Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff too for bonus points, even if they would be the hardest.

Yea tsunami is great with siren especially with a set up of coral reefs and urchins in the zones it goes through.  I think it's worth doing if it is even only traveling in through one zone crossing through a wall into a bed of urchins and bashed into a wall.  Still a lot of dice is being rolled and things will be hurtin.

My favored themed spellbook is my sith lord. A forcemaster with galvitar, force crushes and lots of lightning attack spells. I only played it once (against a water wizard when they were still legal), and won the game, but it is a really nice book.
Other themed spellbooks I have used, and won at least one game with, include a dwarf warlord that only have dwarves and an orc warlord with orcs and goblins.

I tried to make a Gryffindor Priestess when I saw this, but it doesn't work very well. Forcemaster seems a better fit.

EDIT: That said, I just finished a Gryffindor deck, but I'm not going to post it until I can use it to fight our resident Slytherin, Dr Mambo XD

Love this idea.  Here are Some builds I would like to try but have not done yet.  Not sure if any are vaible

1) unicorns unite build!
2) All conjuration build with with a buddy using either a warlord, paladin, wizard, or Druid
3)  pirate Druid build (plants be Rrrrr friends)
4) all the growth creatures  and maybe some egg laying undead insects

I actually have a Unicorn book! Lol. And it has gotten multiple wins.

Paladin of carnage: paladin using altar of carnage. It's interesting that AoC can support Cassiel just like Battleforge.

Zuberi I would totally love to see that book :D.
I was building one myself but struggled at the point if it is possible to run unicorns only. All other creatures would kill the flavour (maybe a faerie would fit in here and some glittering amulets ... )

You requested feedback.
Im missing both a Mage Wand and at lest 1 Elemental Wand.
Id rather go without the Teleport than wo the Mage Wand.
I would add a few enchantments and 1+ Nully. Cheap stuff like Brace Yourself, Decoy, Glancing Blow etc.
You already have Wispwillow amulet for 3 sbp, why?

Is this deck competitive?
I wouldnt know. For me i havnt used Hidden Tunnels ever, so without pretesting it would be a bad idea to bring in to a tourney. I think its a bit to many creatures (to slow) in a timed event for 75 min.

Equipment Dwarf seems competitive, but maybe not so much in a 75 min event anyway.

I put in the Wispwillow because its cheap extra mana early game. I was tempted to not include it though. That extra mana is to help you get out the Dwarves each turn early on. In my games with this so far, I've had 0 problem dropping Dwarves each turn. Against Rush or Swarm though, you just can't keep up. Buddy or Solo would probably be overwhelmed though. Against Swarm you probably gotta switch to Equipment though. I have not yet found the time and/or mana to actually drop Tunnels though. They're simply too expensive to ever be worth their value. If it was just a bit cheaper, and if I could have 6 of them, they'd be worth it. As is, they're really not worth it, though I did try. It simply slows you down too much. You'd probably have to go Buddy to make Tunnels have any real value, and there's just not enough reason to use Tunnels in that case cause you won't have enough Outposts to make it worth anything. So basically, the tunnels are unlikely to be used (sadly), but the rest works pretty well. I did my best regardless.

I went with Beastmaster because a lot of the support I wanted was either Nature (totems, life tree, joined strength, packleader's cowl) or Dark (Marked for Death, Magebane). Also, after trying a few different versions, I think this works best with a Pet ability so it was either this or Priest for Holy Avenger. Lowland unicorns just die too fast. So I get out the two big unicorns and a Pet lowland first, and this creates a pretty good squad to get things going before all the buffs like the Life Tree are in place.

I kept Blessed Focus, which I know a lot of people will criticize. Especially when I'm already running a Nature mage and could get Bear Strength or Wolf Fury for less spb's. However, Blessed Focus is cheaper on mana and Unicorns are perfect picks for keeping at full health. Plus, I've noticed it has a psychological effect on my opponent's which I really like, in that they feel the need to smack the creature to turn off the buff.

Yea I thought about rajans fury and the other totems to make them stronger.  Very cool build, glad to see it with a beast master.  Only thing it looks like you may have some issues with flying creatures. Maybe add a knockdown, geysers, or eagle wings.  I personally don't mind the blessed focus if you are getting use out of it and especially for only two mana.  All those unicorns regenerating and healing each other is just a beutiful thing.   Maybe Wychwood fairie would be nice to get some extra mana flow For even more enchantment discounts.

Personally, I'd probably trade the Meditating Monk for Wychwood Faerie + Mana Flower.

Eagle Wings!! Flying unicorns for the win!

*edit* Or another option might be Gravikor + Elephant Grass: Force them to the ground and effectively get Aegis +2 on all your unicorns!

P.S. I've been using Highland and/or Lowland Unicorns in my Domination Beastmaster books for a while. They're a little pricey on sbp's, but mobile mass regen is great in that format. (And in Domination, additional creature actions are generally better than non-creature regen methods like Raincloud or Meredia's Blessing or Mohktari, although there's nothing wrong with having a mix of the above).

Nice book Zuberi and Thanks for sharing!

My last try ended with a johktari beasmaster with unicorns from a lair and fellela faerie for enchantment support as well as wychwood faerie for economie. I think faeries fit well into the theme. I had a resplendent bow with hawkeye for the mage. Pretty cool for it is cheap manawise and multifunctional with possible healing.

I like blessed focus on your book. Never thought of it.

Have you ever thought of switching to johktari? You have no level 1 animals so you could never use the quick summoning. (But as you mentioned the pet ability itself is pretty strong.)

The problem with wychwood fairy is it doesn't discount when the lair casts, and the lair is casting all my unicorns. If the fairy is only going discount my enchantments, I'd rather have the enchanters ring.

Elephant Grass would be a good addition. I may try to make room. I do already have Gravikor. I haven't tried the Johktari. Wounded Prey would go good with supplementing the low attacks of the unicorns, but It can't be used on the enemy mage. Plus, I really like the book best with a Pet ability. Having three strong unicorns just seems to work better than two, especially when one only costs 9 mana. But I think Johktari could be fun to try.

Oh right Gravikor.  I Totally overlooked it. Solid build then.

I rather have a mana flower but I see how that could be problematic with all the conjurations.  I still like the Wychwood Farie tho because it would be a free to cast out the enchantments with the ring.  But then if no mana flower than you need a harmonize or something else to get more mana.  With the meditation amulet, the lair, and monk plus ring you are probably really good on mana.  I think I rather use my actions doubling down on enchantments or conjurations to get out those totems.  But I do like the flexibility you have with the amulet.
