I hate to burst your bubble, but Plagued is a Poison subtype and Malacoda is Poison Immune.  So you'll have to find a different target for Plagued.

Hmm. I thought it was still a legal cast (Malacoda is a corporeal creature), just that it would have no effect on the target (equivalent to throwing a fireball at a Fire Elemental - certainly legal but pointless).

EDIT (after reading the codex a bit closer): Ah, I see. How annoying. Oh well. I'll have to change the spell out.

I've mentioned this build a few times on the forums. Time to put it up on show.

Turn 1: Sunfire Amulet and Idol of Pestilence.

This makes an immediate +2 Life difference between me and the opponent. It means they have to come to me.

Turn 2: slip on a Cloak of Shadows

Turn 3 onwards: depending on the board situation, start blasting away at the enemy Mage with Drain Souls/Drain Lifes/Drain Power/Siphon Lifes OR start cursing his front-line creatures and keeping distance OR putting out a couple of creatures to mix it up with the enemy. A Plagued Malacoda works a treat as an in-zone henchman for the mage.

The basic point of this build is to get stronger as the enemy weakens. I do take hits (often a lot of them), but this just opens up the vampiric options.

The Sunfire Amulet and the Circle of Light are out of school, yes, but they serve exactly the function I want, and are worth the cost.

The Cloak makes the enemy get within range of the Drain spells, so a distance bombardment is less of an option.

Identified weak match ups are with the Priestess (obviously) and to a lesser extent the Priest and Paladin. But that is not exactly news for a Necromancer.

Player Feedback and Suggestions / Re: spellbind

What happens when I return wand to spellbook by casting other item on its slot? Maybe even other wand.

That is a good question.

I would make two immediate suggestions:

1) the spellbound spell goes back into the book with the wand, and if the wand is recast the spell comes back out with it (and if the spell card gets used in the meantime the wand becomes inert).
2) putting it back in the book resets the wand which, if recast, can have another spell put on it.

The former is in my view the better option but is also the higher trust/higher memory option.
The latter basically increases the cost of changing the bound spell both in mana and action (since it will require another equipment spell (and its action) as well as a fresh cast of the wand).

(of course, this question also opens up a bugbear can of worms of mine about the ability to replace equipment back into the book, but that is for another day)

How about making the spellbind power a one-shot thing?

That is, the wand in your book is a blank slate, waiting for a spell to be bound to it, but once one is bound, that's it. the spell cannot be swapped out. You have effectively made a Wand of Teleport, or a Wand of Dissolve, or a Wand of Lightning Bolt.

That way you would get the power to adapt to the game situation you find yourself in, but do not have a completely mutable toolbox at your command for every time the game state changes.

That would work for me, I think.

Player Feedback and Suggestions / Re: On Goblins

Now I've finally got my hands on the Academy Warlord I see that something similar to my initial suggestion was already in the game when I posted.

I'm loving the Goblin Legionnaires.

They absolutely rule in Domination. A combo of Altar of Iron Guard and the Summoning Circle and suddenly I have three actions on an opponent's orb zone. Then next turn Slaknir comes out, the horn of gothos blows the fast attack, and the swarm goes everywhere.

Spells / Re: favorite spell

I'd have to say my current favourite would be Reverse Attack. I've always been fond of it, but in my last game it outdid itself when a perfectly timed play caused my opponent's buffed-up, undamaged Leviathan to nearly kill itself. It was certainly a thing to behold.

And Drain Soul, of course. The 12 life difference in one hit can be a game breaker. Especially when you play it twice in the round...

Rules Discussion / Re: Gurmash Battle orders
« on: September 21, 2017, 03:39:49 AM »
It's as if he's studied with his summoning warlord and has learned a few tricks of the trade for himself.  In which case, #2 (gurmash copies the ability and adds it to his card) is a completely valid interpretation.

This has certainly always been my assumption. Thematically it works. Mechanically it works. So that's two ticks in its favour and none against.

And as far as Beldin's original question goes, picture it along the lines of:
Warlord: You guys stand firm! [battle order: On Guard!]
Gurmash: You heard the man! You don't dare move, and don't even think of running off or I'll personally find your sorry behind and whip two strips off it! [battle order: On Guard becomes doubled]

I know these forums tend to disregard theme in favour of RAW, but in this case I think the flavour and RAW work well together.

Rules Discussion / Couple of Academy Warlord questions
« on: September 15, 2017, 08:52:15 PM »
Now I've got this set I see lots of potential in it. A couple of questions, though, if I may:

1) Is there a range to the Straywood Scout's special power to mark an enemy creature for death? Is it unlimited (as is, for instance, the Gate to Voltari)? Or is it the 0-1 of his shortbow?

2) The Harshforge Knight can clearly not have a formation attached to him, but does he still benefit from a revealed formation's power?

Looking forward to trying these new cards out.

Ok, let's say that I am quite interested in the Academy Priestess for domination games. That ability to add guard markers is potentially quite useful. Giving her the Arena Priestess' channel and life is easy.

But if I want to turn the Academy Warlock into an arena buddy build (that built-in akiro's favour is quite useful for a beefed up blood demon, say), do I give it the Arraxian's stats or the Adramelech's? Or neither?

Mages / academy mages conversion to arena stats?
« on: September 13, 2017, 06:58:41 PM »
I've looked everywhere for conversion rules to run academy mages (and their special powers) in the arena.

Where there is a single arena mage type to convert it to this seems obvious (academy priestess takes the stats of arena priestess), but what does one do for the warlock/beastmaster/warlord, which each have two arena versions?

Any pointers?

If you are sending her into melee I find that a Circle of Lightning is well worth the effort, especially for the daze/stun effects.

Curse n Smash Warlocks are always fun.

Spellbook Design and Construction / Re: Force-fed Demise - Forcemaster
« on: September 07, 2017, 11:30:03 PM »
I adore the fact the force creatures are quickcasts. I've been suggesting for a while that we need more of them. A lot of the full-round critters are rarely worth the action.

However (and this might have been simply a reflection of the opponent's build) very few of them lasted long enough to exhaust their dissapate tokens. The gremlins are cool, but don't last long in Consecrated Ground...

Trying to keep Minds Eye vs all those ethereal attacks was a forelorn hope.

And I didn't even think about engaging the dragon. This may have been an error. But the Symbiotic Orb did sterling service against her 8+ dice attacks.

Funniest moment: Samandriel tripping the reverse attack (yay) and being immune to her own 9 dice mega Light smackdown (boo!)

Had a go with this yesterday, playing against a Priestess. A long game that ended with the FM's defences finally being overwhelmed by too many opponents.

All I can really report is that Alfiya the Friendly Dragon likes eating Force creatures. I guess they have no calories.
