Cloaked Curser
« on: March 15, 2015, 08:51:50 PM »
So this is basically a solo long range kiting DOT build(with limited creature/conjuration support and some spike fire damage).  I don't recall seeing one of those on the forums. The jist is to always have a Cloak of Shadows up, keep the scary creatures Enfeebled, and keep up a nullify/reverse magic.

You spend the game kiting anything scary(mage, Brogans, ect). Small things you can Chains of Agony and let them kill themselves. I am light on creatures because they slow me down and light on conjurations because I won't protect them. if they are 2 zones away, they need one action to get within one zone of you, a second action to pop the nullify, and a third to actually bother you. make sure you delay all your actions to be ready to run or nullify yourself.

Defense: My only defense is kiting. If they land an immobilize on me which I cant remove, I have probably lost. I have no constant armor or defenses intentionally to be efficient(though i could throw in a block or brace yourself). I let my battleforge/Sersiryx die since I can't protect them. My mage is the only target of value so she runs away.

Tools to stay at max range: teleport trap, teleportx2, force push, wall/trap damage, enfeeble, devils trident cripple, mongoose/cheeta

Offense: Any chance you have for aggression is used to pile on curses and burns on the enemy mage at max range. You can also spike damage them with some fire, either before they have defensive stuff in place or to make the kill. Ignore enemy armor stacking but explode flame -2 equipment when convenient.

Early game options:
1) early hide and self curse with enchanters ring, then transfusion
2) battleforge and early harass
3) charge in an early Sersiryx to curse and cripple
4) fireball rush

Possible spellbook additions:
1) Brace yourself/block
2) Enchanters wardstone(though I fear it will just die quick, only play it >1 zones from enfeebled mage you fear may purge magic)
3) Blood Demon(flying and vamp may keep it alive unsupported)
4) Fireball damage buffs(hawkeye, more marked for death, armor reducers)
...other?

reminders:
battleforge can't see you if you are obscured and 2 zones away.
Explode and Combustion Ignore intercept.
cheeta speed far less important than mongoose agility
Revealing enfeeble after they move one zone ends their action. Preventing a turn 2 or 3 mage action is a very big deal.

You will have a problm with your Manapool.
9 Channeling and your Imp (1 Mana) is not enough to support 3 Actions every round, especially if you
1) use curses on the enemy mage (magebind) and
2) avoid using your full action to strike in melee
Akiro, I have never prayed to you before. No one will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, or why we died. All that matters is that one stood against many. That's what's important! Valor pleases you, Akiro... so grant me strength! And if you do not listen, then to HELL with you!

1) Brace yourself

Yes. Do this absolutely. It is perfect for this spellbook, in case you get into some trouble for one round and need to weather some attacks.

I second that you do not have enough mana. Seems like you are playing for the long game. Might be worth playing a mana crystal or two.

Maybe a Harmonize instead of a mana crystal?
I can take the fun out of anything. It's true; here, look at this spreadsheet.

Mana Crystal should be better here for two reasons:

- Why spending 6 Mana (Harmonize), if you can have the same thing with only 5 Mana? (First Round he will not have the Enchanters Ring yet, assuming his opening will be Imp and Crystal)
- Mana Crystal will eventually draw attention on it and suck up some damage/action from the enemy. That's exactly what he wants: Time to cast his curses and evade damage on himself and his Imp.

You  may want to drop Enchanter's Ring. It only works on Friendly Creatures and you only have a few enchantments that you could benefit from it.

Have you considered Sectarus as a weapon. This would give you another mana source and another curse casting ability that fits nicely with your strategy.

update.  I added in a mana crystal and harmonize. I played this on octgn a few times. I'm surprised no one destroyed the cloak, though one guy did put up his own cloak. I find I do charge into another mages zone, but only if i am up on them by ~15 damage. Sectarus is the opposite of my goal of staying away all game.

My opening turn is usually a mana crystal/battleforge. I sometimes i spend the second turn doing more economy, but I the games go quicker if i go straight to a turn2 magebane. I have 3 magebanes in this book for some reason. maybe to bait dispels.

The enchanters ring isnt used much, but it is a way to give the battleforge something to do. The battleforge runs out of usefulness after about 5 turns.

I may need more fire walls to block LOS, though i never have the mana for them.

Nice spellbook  :)

I think I would change the Walls of Fire for Wall of Bones. Only 1 spellpoint and cheaper casting cost.

A Dark Pact Slayer or Blood Demon seems to good to pass up on? (that might mean you need 1-2 extra Mongoose Agility to bypass guards)

I would worry about a Necromancer - ~10% of your spellbook will be useless.

Also you might not have enough offence/damage vs a good healer like Druid/Priestess? (and the game could go on for ever)

Dragonscale Hauberk + Armor Ward seems like really bad news - explode gets very expensive.

Pretty good vs. most Wizards I guess.

A Mage Wand with Dispel will beat your tactic very effectively, because you have no Dissolve, only the expensive explode.

Multiple Mage Wands with Dispel bound will beat your tactic very effectively, because you have no Dissolve, only the expensive explode. Both are very cheap for the Wizard.

I have run into this while playing this book, where they dispel one enchantment every turn and i recast one enchantment every round. They only seem to start this once half dead and I still deal fair damage every round while they stop trying to hurt me. I don't run out copies of any enchantment before they die. I still have burns stacked on them too.

Purge magics are far more disruptive to me.

UPDATE

Thanks

Maybe. I figured the flame walls are tougher(ish) and i might be able to forcepush to gain some space, damage the mage, and benefit from the flame+1.

Definately not. kiting a slow mage doesnt benefit me if i give them creatures to attack. I need that mana. I'm not even sure I use the imp familiar enough to include him.

I killed a necromancer. Wasn't that bad. got him on like turn 4. I think he went 2 turns of economy and I went 2 turns of fireballs :P.

I dont think i've faced a priestess(or fast lady-beastmaster). I fought a druid but I screwed up the early game by not enfeebling the mage and lost(the only loss that I recall of about 6 games) shortly after with cheap wall-forcepushes. Druid might be hard for me because of the spell range via vines(eg. easy corrosive orchid->cloak of shadows, or a Roused Raptor vine)

Dragonscale Hauberk + Armor Ward is good for me. They blew mana on that. I can work around it.

against wizards, i really enjoy their wizard tower sitting useless in the middle of the arena.
...

I think I should detail how I do damage:
1)curses(curse ring, ghoul rot, magebane, ...)
2)burn markers(ignite, fire curse, amulet thing, akiros+fire damage, ...)
3)fire attack spells(fire-ring, fireballs, ...)
4)misc(traps, walls, melee attacks, ect.)

Keeping enfeeble and magebane up(in that order) is very important.

I don't have to commit to any one of these, and can switch easily, but the opponent has to commit to certain defenses. For example, if they stack armor and/or flame -x then I'll pass on the attack spells rather than trying to destroy their equipment. I love when they commit to a type of defense. If they commit to defending one type of my attacks, they lost a bunch of mana and I use other damage methods.  The only thing I remember ever really wanting to explode(or dispel) was a purge magic mage wand. Maybe an opposing cloak of shadows too...

I love enemy defensive enchantments(like regrowth, rhino hide), because Arcane Corruption and regrowth gives my poisoned blood something to do.

If they are a druid, I wont focus on stacking burns(water spells remove them all). If they are a necro, I will lean more into fire damage because no ghoul rot. If they build a lot of economy, i go for some early damage, possibly with fireballs.

This is the mage that lost by being stuck in a corner behind Wall of Earth(s) (+archers tower, + archer) because there was literally nothing i could do to get out or damage anything. I've since corrected this with some eagleclaw boots.
