Mage Wars Academy / Re: Academy Tournament This Weekend
« on: January 14, 2018, 08:51:31 PM »
I know I lost all 3, but it was a blast.  I learned a lot and can't wait to play again.  I'm already working on a new priestess deck and can't wait to try out the other mages.  Thanks for the games and the good times.  I really appreciate how helpful everyone has been to someone just starting out.

I too like the spacial aspect.  I play a minis game on a regular basis, but this game takes the card game aspect and mashes it together.  I get the tactical movement aspect (no! I'm one zone to far away!) and the casting fun (traps and creatures and walls, oh my!) without having to measure distances all the time with a tape measure.

thanks for putting this out there.  I joined it, so maybe we will talk in really life at some point.

Thanks for the help everyone.  I've been meaning to check out a local shop by me and I'm trying to get my friends into it.  So far so good on the friend front.  2 people really liked it and I'm sure after the other has had another chance at it it would make more sense.

I've got all the current Academy expansions now so I will try building a few decks with that and then see how many fireballs I can throw at people in arena.

And quick question, are spawn points worth it?  15 mana for the Beastmaster some seems a bit overpriced since I usually die in like 9 turns, that only nets me 5 mana in the long run and my dead mage can't use it.  :(

Personally, 3 hours is a bit of a long game for me.  90 would be perfect.  For me, the reason they take longer is analysis paralysis of having access to so many awesome things at once.  Do I want to equip a crazy demon hide mask or summon something that flies and has nasty teeth to terrify the other player?  BWAHAHA!

I know for when I taught a few friends to play Academy, the game took over 2 hours.  I don't know if anyone else has run into this, but they wouldn't attack each others' mages, they kept going after creatures instead.

I would love to see this game explode in a good way.  Out of curiosity, how has it changed over the years?  I had no idea it had been around so long, and I would much rather have quality or quantity when it comes to releases.

Alright, I'm going to take this in a bit of a different direction.  In regards to the play base, does anyone know how many people actually play Mage Wars? It doesn't seem like it's going anywhere anytime soon since they are planning on expansions for 2018 (yay!) and the friends I've introduced it to really enjoy it.

I know card games always get compared to MTG, but CCGs have never been my thing since I like having money in my bank account, but what's a realistic size to say the game is currently at?

I like the idea.  I can't make it this time around because I have a regular commitment Sunday mornings but it would be a cool once a month thing.  I really do enjoy Academy and even if I can't make tournaments (kinda scared of them really) regularly scheduled games would be great.

Thanks for throwing this idea out there!

General Discussion / Re: Why does MW Academy get so much hate
« on: January 05, 2018, 05:41:18 PM »
Academy seems like a great entry point.  I found Arena exciting, but a bit much to learn how to play with someone else who hasn't played before.  Academy feels more accessible and my friends are more likely to go, "sure, I'll give it a try."

So two questions:

What are some general book building guidelines? (I'm guessing there are some posts about this but I'm not sure where)

and

How do you connect with players in your area?

To me the benefit to a video game is that it handles all of the rules for you, which makes it easier to pick up.  Also, I do not know anyone else who plays Mage Wars in my area :( so video games and internet tools like OCTGN would work out for me pretty well.

I do really like these sorts of things in person more though.  I would much rather show up at a friends place or have some people come over and play.  Seeing people's reactions when a crazy roll happens or a good card is played can't be beat.

I'm located in the Twin Cities in Minnesota.  Mage wise, I think the priestess is going to be pretty cool.  I've always liked playing cleric type characters in games for some reason.

Hi everyone,

I am really excited to play mage wars and I just got academy.  I haven't tried arena yet but I hope to get my friends playing both of them soon.

So, how do you guys track down players in your area?  What about playing on OCTGN?  I'm looking for ways to try and get started since I like to game as a social activity, even if it's online.

Any tips would be helpful, and hopefully we'll play some time soon.

:)

Mage Wars Academy / Re: List of OCTGN Academy players
« on: December 29, 2017, 07:43:03 PM »
Hi,

I'm new to mage wars and joined the forums in hopes of finding people to play on OCTGN since no one around me plays yet.  How do I add you guys and set up a game of academy?

As someone who is new to mage wars, a mage wars game would be awesome.  I've only played academy a few times, but I loved it enough to join this forum.  However, since no one around me plays mage wars, it would be great to have it in a video game format, especially if I could get it on Steam.
