new druid build since the Druid PodCast
« on: November 14, 2014, 09:45:54 AM »
After listening to the MageWars Monday podcast about the druid I created this build. Any suggestions or questions let me know. I have not had a chance to play this yet.

There is a chance that this book makes an appearance in the future on an episode of Arcane Duels.

Im looking forward to see the Druid in another Arcane Duels episode!

You seem to have a very focused strategy ready. Tons of Vine markers and only plant/vine creatures.

And you want to keep your plant creatures alive: 5 Rhino Hide - 3 Bull Endurance and the Etherian Lifetree.

Then im guessing that your Druid is´nt going to hang back?

I compared my Druid book with yours and i wan´t to ask why you don´t have any Seedling Pods (even without the Samara tree)?

Also the 2 Harmonize puzzle´s me, instead of 2 Mana Flowers? (thats 2 spellpoints)

Minor Things: Breastplate? Id rather have 2x nature/Water armor. I might even prefer Dragonscale Hauberk even if its 3 spellpoints - just because Fire using enemies are doing so well against you. I guess you could go for Bear Skin + Elemental Cloak also.

Im not sure about Regrowth Belt? (You do have Barkskin)

Might be in big trouble vs any Warlock: Fire and Curses seems a good counter (not only vs this Druid book)

And a more general question: what about Burst of Thorns?

The AD guys like to say I " only play books that are really, really, living or really, really, dead." I primarily play The Druid or the Necromancer, and when not directly playing necro, I usually play with Skeletons, such as my skeletal warlord build.

So every time I've played with seedling pods they always got killed before they were of any use.  I might try them again in a future build. Adding the life tree will definitely give them a fighting chance.

So this was the build after listening to the Mage Wars Podcasts (if you aren't listening to them you are greatly missing out, they're awesome)

While plant creatures are strong on the attack side they are prone to being killed due to the lack of life or armor. so I'm adding Rhino hides and Bull endurance. I made some changes to the book already but this is the first version, so I did not list my changes.

One of the changes was taking out one harmonize and replace it with Mana Flowers. The 2nd harmonize was to harmonize myself, but it actually costs one more Mana to harmonize yourself than a flower/crystal. I also changed the number of bull endurance and took out one Dissolve. I took out the shift enchantments for enchantment transfusion.

The theory behind removing a dissolve is that the orchids can destroy equipment. The orchids and acid ball can corrode. I should only have to worry about weapons such as Lash of Hellfire, mage wands, Elemental wands,..etc

You make a good point about the regrowth belt. I will already have regenerate2 from barkskin, and also with the treebond. Do I really need that much regeneration.?

I'm not using burst of thorns, because I was planning on using the vine markers and the vinewhip staff to keep everything on lockdown with stuck markers.

2 Bearskin might be a better choice over the storm drake hide.

I'll post the final changes later, but was wondering basically about the first build and if anyone saw any changes we have not already come up with.

I play a very similar book.  I, too, only ran one teleport at first, but changed to running three after a couple of playtests.  It's too useful of a spell with the Druid's mostly rooted creatures.

I usually only ever use teleport to save myself, but that's a good point.

I might have to think about changing that.

I like the build Ray! We still meeting up this Sunday for an episode? I haven't played the Druid ever so I'm really asking for more reasons then giving advice here. Let me know if what i'm saying makes no sense.

I'm not sure if you need more armor since Bark skin and Rhino hide give you a good amount already. If you add in the Chest Plate then I think you should consider taking out the leather. With replacing the Regrowth Belt I would consider a colossus belt (triple cost sucks :-/ ) If you keep the leather I would consider a Veterans Belt. Regrowth and Regrowth Belt cost the same but Regrowth is a more versatile spell altogether.

Maybe Eagleclawboots to make sure you don't get pushed through your own wall.

I wouldn't mind hearing more about your plan with the walls. They seem to contradict the large number of Strange/TangleVines. With 5 Walls maybe a Mage Wand with Force Push or Teleport to support your Thornlashers might be important.

I am interested in your opening too. I think that casting the tree, two mana flowers, and two rings is a big commitment before defense or any creatures. Do the vines help with hindering and allow you to get all that out?

Would you ever consider a nullify to combo with Enchantment Transfusion? Is there a big combo you are looking to pull off with Enchantment Transfusion

How would you deal with flyers? I also am curious how you deal with an Adramelech Warlock that brings a lot of fire.

Mage Wand with Knockdown can help against flyers. To protect the wand, think about Nullify or Armor Ward.

To bring the Kralathor to full growth fast, i would use Lion Savagery too. He needs the killing blows.
Akiro, I have never prayed to you before. No one will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, or why we died. All that matters is that one stood against many. That's what's important! Valor pleases you, Akiro... so grant me strength! And if you do not listen, then to HELL with you!

While i found my self every turn starving for mana I was still a huge threat with 2 massive raptor vines on the board. I wanted to get Kralathor out, but never got near the 16 mana after a turn 2 Raptor vine and a turn 3 raptor vine and Force Hammer on his Barracks. I think my only creatures the entire match were 2 Raptor vines and a thornlasher. The Corrosive Orchid also did a phenomenal job destroying deflection bracers and killing a construction yard.

I had one turn after my opponent activated his mage where I force pushed him one zone away with my QC, then activated thornlasher for 2 damage and drug him through a Blood spline wall for 2 more damage and a bleed. Then a corrosive orchid spit on him for 2 damage and a corrode. My next activation a raptor vine with Bear strength ate his face for 8 points.

I never played either of the vinewhip staffs, and I found the upkeep of the barkskin really taxing. I wanted to play the mana flower, but never got to because I needed to buff my creature or myself. I also never got to force push through a wall of thorns or kill the mage with a stranglevine.

I agree coshade that the flower is pointless, I can't deploy it but I  feel I need to find additional mana somewhere. What about a meditation amulet? I have to use it twice in order to profit from it. Can I really afford to do nothing 2 turns? If I take the flower out, what do I change with the rest of the book?

In that match i only used a hurl Boulder and a force hammer out of my attack spells. do i add another Level 1 water spell, a rust, acid ball, geyser, surging wave. another Tangle vine?

I also think I might want to remove one thornlasher for another raptor vine. But i'm not certain about that. A raptor vine costs almost all of my channeling for the turn. What about Tataree. She costs more than a mana flower but would speed up the vine tree's channeling. I think i'd rather have the flower over tataree.

I find seedling pods to be kinda stupid. You pay 3 mana and after 3 turns you can cast something from them and break even. there is nothing to gain by playing a seedling pod. plus you need to play the life tree to give them some sort of protection.

Why not include the Meditation Amulet ?
It's a perfect card for a stationary mage.
I think every Druid book should include at least one.

Seedling pod has two uses.

First, it lets you save actions that would otherwise be wasted. This is handy in action-heavy druid builds, especially those starved for mana. Don't have a good quickcast option? Just cast a seedling pod.

The second use is to delay making a decision. Suppose at the start of the game you are not sure what strategy your opponent will use. Rather than commit to a particular strategy, you can just cast some seedling pods and decide what they will be later. This will be more useful as more plant spells are introduced to the game.

Basically, seedling pods let you store actions for later without having to decide what they will do (apart from being a plant object). If you find yourself short on actions anyway, they will not be a good play.

Casting several Bloodspine Walls in deploy, cheap/free Stranglewine/Tanglewines and one day one of those might grow into Kralathor..

I lack expirience with the Druid but I always seems to be in great trouble vs her.
