Title: OCTGN tournaments
Post by: Biblofilter on May 30, 2018, 02:42:56 AM
Id like if there where more OCTGN tournaments. A lot more.

Well honestly i would love to participate in one again soon.

Heres a couple of ideas and thoughts.

Id love to see Pudding and Coshade play.

Id love there to be a time limit. Playing on workdays is just troublesome without a time limit.
I don´t care much what that time limit is - it should be up to the players/judges/commentators.
90 min, 2 hour, 4 hour, 12 hour - whatever people prefer.

Id suggest skipping the round robins. Its cool but i think its to much trouble. Stuff happens so i would suggest a faster schedule.

Like 4, 8, 16 players winners advance - losers sign up for the next tourney which start as soon you have 4, 8, 16 players. I think 32+ is to many. 8 is a good number. Then at some point run a winners only tourney.

If we do have a tiebreaker we would need a way to determine who is going to advance if a game is unfinished.
Id suggest remaining life + d12 roll. I mean if your 10 life ahead when we go to time, it might not even say anything about your chances to win if the game had not gone to time.
But its real simple and give the life "looser" a chance.

4 player tourney could be done in 3-4 hours - if players can commit to a 4 hour slot.
8 players would probably take a week or two and 16 players a month.

I do like the Arcane Duels "new mage every game" or something a long those lines.
But you could do all kinds of things: let your opponent choose your mage ahead of time, play a mirror match tourney Siren vs Siren anyone?

I'm suggesting we could have daily, weekly or monthly tourneys :)
I wouldn't be so bad to miss out on a tourney as there would soon be a new one.

With 16 players that's 4 rounds and 15 matches.
          8 players that's 3 rounds and 7 matches.
          4 players that's 2 rounds and 3 matches.

Essentially what I'm hearing, assuming I'm understanding you right, is the gist of your post boils down to essentially....you'd like to play some more Mage Wars?  8)

I would totally join an octgn tournament! Time limits seem important for doing a monthly thing.
What if there was a soft and hard time limit. Throwing numbers out, say something like after 2 and half hours everything gains Finite Life. Then at 3 hours you do a full stop and do your life suggestion. I would use the ADMW time limits for planning/between action phases as it forces the players to actually move the game instead of stalling. Just a broad suggestion. I would love for there to be more OCTGN MW tournaments!

Lets do this!
Who is up for a test run of this in June?
I want 8 players but will settle for 4.

First tourney starts tomorrow Friday Jun 1 and ends at the latest Sunday the 10.

Parrings will be dependent on when people can play - so when you sign up pls write when you can play.
If you cant play during this weekend Friday-Sunday i suggest you don't sign up for this. Just wait until next week.

I'm generally available to play MW on work days from 00-04 or 08-12 (CET) and most weekends. (for 3 hour slots at least)

You have to be pretty active here in this tread and try to set up a match here.
If somebody doesn't respond here - his opponent will get a bye and we will move on.

Next week/month there will be a new tourney anyway.
Love to see this work, so sign up and start playing more.

No :)

The idea is to do this every month.
And it shouldn't matter if you have to sit out a month or two. (I'm busy next month)

We are 4 or 5 players at the moment for June, so that's a max of 3-4 matches.
Title: Re: OCTGN tournaments
Post by: Biblofilter on June 07, 2018, 04:59:58 AM
Keejchen vs Shoopuff
Shark vs Biblo

Then the final

Jbussaw enters from midjune if we can get some more players! (7 or 8)

This is the first of hopefully a steady monthly tournament.

Time limit is 3 hours as per Coshade and my suggestions.
Feel free to agree otherwise if you both have time and lust for longer games.
But i would love if we could test the time limit.

I see four spots are taken. I would like to be number five in case this jumps to eight people.

Great GSweatt :)

You are actually #6.

1. Biblo
2. Keejchen
3. Shark
4. Shoopuff

Thats group A starting now.

Group B will start in "mid-june"  whenever Jbuzzsaw79 tells us that is.

5. Jbuzzsaw79
6. GSweatt/-Starscream (OCTGN name)
7.
8.

If time permits we will have a final between group A and B.

Try to be pretty active here to arrange matches - we will need to drop inactive players to keep this moving forward. And its perfectly fine, if something happens - so you can´t play or respond to forum post.
But then just join the next group.

Time limit will be 3 hours per game, with everything gaining Finite Life after 2½ hours.
If nobody is dead at that time you each roll a d12 an add it to your remaining life to determine a winner.

Note that is not cut in stone. Its first try. Should make it easier to arrange matches, and play them.

Feel free to arrange longer matches or concede instead of rolling the yellow dice if you think you are hopelessly behind.

I hope this work out, so we can have regular mini OCTGN tourneys.

We are going with brackets of 4 for now, as it seems easier to manage and kick-off.
Then try to arrange matches between group A and B etc.

Alright, I mashed the thing together, let's get it rolling. https://challonge.com/q8100e1o

I rolled a die to mix "group B".

There is a new voting/predictions system on Challonge. No idea how it works, so I turned it on obviously, you can win imaginary internet points.

Should all games be recorded? I will probably do commentary on my own games, but even if games get uploaded without commentary, I'm sure someone will find it interesting.

It is nice to have video proof in case of disputes, since we do not have judges. However, as far as I recall, there has never been any disputes, and we are not playing for any real prizes here, so it is not 100% necessary.
Title: Re: OCTGN tournaments
Post by: Biblofilter on June 07, 2018, 10:53:23 AM
We are going for speed first.
So you will have to fix disputes yourself, or get help.

Great that we have 8 people already!
Its 3 matches total, so should not become a problem.

Id love if you would announce it here, the time for when you are gonna play.

So Sharky.

If you are going to run the tournament I would highly suggest a house rule of Disciple of Radiance being once per turn. If the rule isn't there, then I highly suggest running it!
Title: Re: OCTGN tournaments

I'm against that rule. I want to face someone who tries to "abuse" that card, let me see if it's really so broken.
Title: Re: OCTGN tournaments
Post by: keejchen on June 07, 2018, 11:27:09 AM
Absolutely agree, we should just adopt the "Restrictions And/Or Clarifications" part of the admw rules. Better to have one standard  :)

@enti do it in a casual game, I'm sure Juli will be happy to show you ;)
Title: Re: OCTGN tournaments
Post by: Enti on June 07, 2018, 11:31:50 AM
If Juli wins against me it's not necessarily because this particular card is too strong.
Title: Re: OCTGN tournaments
Post by: Coshade on June 07, 2018, 11:32:34 AM
It's a rule that we spent a long time testing to see if we wanted to implement it. Overall the analysis was that allowing it all the time made each game look very rock, paper, scissors like.

if you are going for speed first, then why the 3 hour time for a match? i would suggest 90 min to 2 hours max.

Speed as in tournament done by months end, not the matches themselves.
Title: Re: OCTGN tournaments
Post by: zot on June 07, 2018, 12:36:56 PM
Seems to be shorter matches would also help the event completed quicker too.
Title: Re: OCTGN tournaments
Post by: Biblofilter on June 07, 2018, 03:40:34 PM
Upkeep seems to be slower online.

I don´t think its because everybody is running out to the kitchen, to get this and that every upkeep (like me)

The 3 hour time limit is a test. We will see how it goes.

2 games done so far! I actually forgot to set a timer in my game with Shoopufff, so a friendly remember to do it, unless both are ok with a longer game.

And im ready for the final  8)

Forcemaster vs Necro
Video comming?

So we are moving pretty fast.
Bracket B was not supposed to start before mid-june.

In total we are missing 3 matches.

Regarding rules:
We are running with ADMW tournamnet rules.

+ a few timing rules

1. Time limit is 3 hours. After 2½ hour everything gets Finite Life.
2. Dissipates are removed after final round. (to nerf Restore)
3. If nobody dead after 3 hour you both roll a d12+ your remaining life. Highest advances.

As far as i know nobody has hit the Time limit yet. :)
Players can agree to drop the Time limit, if both of them has the time and lust for a longer untimed game.
But i really encourage everybody to try this, so we can test it.

Object is to get regular Tourneys on OCTGN that are finished within 1 month.
That means you have to accept being kicked, if something bad/good happens and you cannot play.

If Juli wins against me it's not necessarily because this particular card is too strong.

You will know if it's that card - you'll go from zero damage to dead in an upkeep phase... (ignoring armour and defenses)

Enti (Wizard) won vs Jbuzz (Bloodwave)

then continued in the finals to do the same thing!!

Enti (Wizard) won vs Biblo (Bloodwave)

Wizard might still be strong, but Bloodwave suddenly seems to have a chance!!

Here is a couple of ideas for new tourneys:

2 vs 2 Domination - everybody vs everybody

F.x with 5 players:

1+2 vs 3+4 (5)
1+3 vs 2+5 (4)
1+5 vs 2+4 (3)
1+4 vs 3+5 (2)
2+3 vs 4-5  (1)

Will be a lot harder to get matches in as well need 4 players to be able to play at the same time.
#1 and #2 could then challenge Pudding and Coshade

We could try Sailor Vulcans 3D map :)

You are very welcome to post other ideas for OCTGN tourneys here.

Title: Re: OCTGN tournaments
Post by: Sailor Vulcan on August 08, 2018, 11:26:58 AM
Also just to clarify this won't replace regular arena and domination tourneys by any means. It was an idea I suggested as a sort of annual or biannual thing, though it depends on how many people are interested.
