General Discussion / Re: OCTGN for shiny Mac

You're getting a whole computer just for Mage Wars? Seriously why not just wait for tabletopia? It will be much cheaper and will be compatible with Mac.

Eh?

WHAT?

Eeeeehhhh???

Magic. When is that out? I already use Tabletopia...

Your best bet is to use Parallels and run Windows in a VM. It is a pricey solution though just for OCTGN.

Thanks, sIKE. I have absolutely no idea what this means, but right now, I am thinking of buying a wee laptop just for Mage Wars.

What will I need?

After reading a post here I ordered from IGUK to Germany and have it since last week. All german distributors were or are slower. But IGUK had it in stock is what I can now guarantee.

Pleasure to have been of help.   :D

We tried to ensure that each mage had a couple different paths they could chose right out of the gate. As more mages are added, we'll be expanding the spell pool and I'm sure things will get more diverse. If nothing else, I feel the Priestess and Warlock will provide new methods and plans to enact.

This is exactly what I'm after. I really enjoy the depth of full on  Mage Wars, but none of my mates are up for the time investment. I reckon I can engage them in Academy once there are perhaps four mages and a few routes to take. Too many spells turns them off from casual play. The barrier to entry is too high.

You might say that my mates are, in fact, 'minor buddies' and I need to find or create a Mage Wars 'major buddy'!    ;)

General Discussion / OCTGN for shiny Mac

Played quite a bit on my old PC a few years back, and the chaps at Arcane Duels have inspired me to get back into Mage Wars. Academy coming for Christmas, but I fancy removing the rustiness in the arena on OCTGN.

My old PC is now dead. Can I run OCTGN on a nice new Mac? I am completely non technical so don't fancy setting up emulators and so on.

All help appreciated.

I played a lot of Mage Wars a few years back and I have Academy coming this Chistmas. I measured a promising looking box wrapped under the tree and it is inch perfect.  ;)

I actually quite enjoy a rather more restricted card set. Perhaps a bit more than core set Academy, but not TOO many cards. Mage Wars with all the expansions can have a little TOO much going on. Particularly so if we are trying to gain new players.

There's an on line game called Pox Nora that is very much like Mage Wars, but after twenty or so expansions, it can't get new players as it's all way too complex. The best period was after four to five expansions.

Domination, Academy, and new play MODES seem more interesting to me, rather than tonnes of new cards.

Wizard's Tower is always a great option, and particularly in an attack spell minded book like this. Perhaps even two, though it's a bit cheesey.

You might make space by taking out some Mana Crystals, Dissolves, Dispels and reverses. A second wand MIGHT be useful with so many attack spells. Perhaps Acid Ball to replace some dissolves.

Do you need two hides?

Remember though that with eagle wings you can't hide anymore. When you fly everything has los to you as that can be dangerous. That door swings both ways

That's why I like the Necropian Vampiress. Hide behind the wall then fly in on your turn. Buffed appropriately.

Thank you very much Ronor.

I haven't played for a long while, but back in the day, the Forcemaster + wall of thorns + push (of some sort) gave a nasty surprise. Players never forget the ten dice damage, so they usually armour up. Looking at the expansions, there seem to be more options to remove armour, so this type of play may work again, and perhaps in the later game once armour has been stripped.

When playing such a wall based game, I found the Necropian Vampiress to be an excellent buddy as she can fly over the walls and can heal herself. Packs a decent punch too. The Gorgon Archer might find sight lines blocked if you are generous with walls. I guess there's always Eagle Wings...

Love the decor in that Spiele Cafe. Is that a 'thing' in Germany? There are one or two trying to set up in the UK.

Very interesting.

I'm on BGG every day, this forum every day now, though not in the past two years or so, and never on Facebook.

I guess I'm one of the slightly crazy 2.7%!

Lol. Kind words to an old fart! Thanks.

Tabletopia is out now as far as I know. I have been using it a little to play test Swords & Sorcery on Kickstarter.  On my shiny Mac.

It LOOKS great but I prefer the functionality of OCTGN, when it's working right     ::)

I'm hoping that Academy will bring in lapsed guys like me and new blood. Ideally not of the poisoned type...

Also, it would be lovely if OCTGN were available on Macs and iPad. Tabletopia looks to be quite nice too. Perhaps that route could work and increase the player base. Even if just for Academy.

Well thanks guys! We really appreciate it.

The community has really boomed in the past year or so, but we're not the only ones that contributed.
  • LordOfWinter - Was keeping a constant blog post along with keeping people informed about developments in the company.
  • SiKe - Working relentlessly to keep the game updated on OCTGN so we can all play remotely.
  • ACG - The other face of OCTGN, along with throwing out Card ideas.
  • Sailor Vulcan - Constantly posting in the forums to keep it alive and bringing up interesting ideas to spark conversation, in addition to working on builds that don't need expansions.
  • Schwenkgott - Doing all of the things, but also giving us the quarterly Thunderdome tournaments.
  • TheDude - Being awesome and starting the Mage Roars League.
  • Sharkbait - Starting the MageCast podcasts on strategy and contributing heavily to the AD stream.
  • Puddnhead - Cohosting the MageCasts and also being on the stream frequently.
And these are just the immediately apparent ones coming to mind (Sorry if I forgot to mention you). There are so many playtesters and great players improving the game every day.

AWESOME!

Looks like a great team effort.

I am an old boy coming back into the game. My old laptop is knackered and I run Apple now, so tragically, no OCTGN for me. Probably just as well as I just lost a match against my son. He's fourteen now. I could beat him when he was ten!

Academy is on the way for Christmas, and I'm hoping to get more people into it.
