Title: NEW Beginners guide to play MW online via Octgn and a List of players
Post by: Charmyna on July 30, 2013, 07:15:20 PM
Hi all,

Most important: I got a new mic! Audio quality is much better now - hurray :). So here you can see/hear the beginners guide with new mic:
http://www.twitch.tv/charmyna/c/3802698

If you like watching mage wars matches with audio comments, here you can find links to many more of them and a brief summary of the matches (including what to learn from my own and my opponents mistakes):
http://forum.arcanewonders.com/index.php?topic=13428.0

Here you can find infos about the MW module in Octgn and how to install it:

If you prefer a written down beginners guide, here is an older version of the guide (think not much changed since it was written):

First, its always useful to know how to change your view on the board:
Scroll to zoom in and out and press the middle button of your mouse to move the screen.

Click “Game” on top left, then click “load deck”.
Before you move any card out of your spellbook (!!!) right click on the board, then click “Setup Player”. If you built your spellbook appropriately (i.e. including both your mages stats card and your mage card) the program will automatically set up your base channeling, mana and life, which all are shown in the row above your spellbook.
Now, from the cards in your spellbook double click on the card with your mages stats and your mage itself to move them to the board face down. Double click on them again to flip the cards which will add the necessary markers to your mage (e.g. Quickcast Marker, Action Marker and Voltaric Shield Marker for the wizard).

From now on all the shortcuts I will talk about will NOT WORK if your chat is active! That might be obvious to some of you, but still sometimes you might wonder why the program does not respond to your shortcuts. Check if you have the chat active!

To start the game, press ctrl+ arrow down. The Initiative Marker will appear and a field which states that you are in the Planning Phase (usually a game round in Octgn starts with the upkeep phase, but not in the first round since there is nothing you want to do in upkeep phase).
To roll for Initiative press the “f1” key. A window will appear and you will be asked to type in the amount of dices you want to roll. So press “0” to roll only the effect dice (the effect dice is always rolled).
Unlike in the normal MW game the Initiative Marker in Octgn has a red and a blue coloured side. By pressing ctrl+f you can flip the Initiative Marker to the correct colour. Btw, the program will automatically flip the Initiative Marker before each round, as well as adding mana to your mana pool and adding mana tokens to conjurations/creatures with channeling (it does realize you casted a harmonize on a creature/conjuration and for the Warlords Barrack it factors in outposts! Unfortunately the program does not recognize stuff that increases your mages channeling, so don’t forget to change your channeling manually after casting a mana crystal etc!)
After you have chosen the cards you want to play this round, press ctrl + arrow down to let the program and your opponent know you are done with planning phase. After both players pressed ctrl+arrow down the phase switches to deploy phase. After both players press ctrl+arrow down again, the phase changes to first quickcast phase and so on.
Most of the stuff im telling you here can be tested without another human player. But, in order to change from one phase to the next, it is necessary that the program receives the order to end the current phase from two players! Therefore, if you want to test the phase stuff by yourself, you will need a second Octgn account (its free anyway) and join the game with both accounts.
You can play in Octgn without using setup player and the all the mentioned automatization by manually changing your channeling, mana etc. But, its very convenient to let the program do that stuff, so I advice to make use of the automatization.

Now, you know the basics. What im talking about next are useful shortcuts that help quickening the game and are mostly used in the Action Phase.
In general, if you want to change the mana in your pool, damage or total life, its best to type in the new value into the appropriate field. Do not use “+” and “-“ next to the field because that will spam the chat and will make it very inconvenient for your opponent to track whether or not you changed the value correctly!
To pay mana costs for spells, you can double click on the card after its face up. A window will appear which shows the mana costs. If you click “ok” the mana will be substracted from your pool and a message in the chat will appear to let your opponent know how much you payed. Btw, the program does realize you got an arcane ring etc.
Ctrl+ arrow right will produce a message in the chat like “Charmyna is done”. This has no effect on the program itself. But, during the Action Phase its useful to let your opponent know that you are done with your current turn.

To use the shortcuts I will talk about now you need your mouse to hover over the creature you want manipulate (and dont have chat activated).
In general the most important shortcuts are ctrl+ the first letter of the associated marker. For example press ctrl+r to add a ready marker (or if there already is a ready marker on the creature the ready marker will switch to the other side). Press ctrl+b for a burn token, ctrl+m for mana token etc. You can see the shortcuts by right clicking on your creature. A complete list of all markers can be seen by pressing ctrl+o.
To add damage to a creature press f2. To remove damage press f4. AFAIK there is no way to add/remove more than one damage per key stroke.
Press ctrl+ page up/page down to change a cards position on z axis (useful for enchantments).
If you want to show your opponent which card you are targeting with a spell or whatever press shift+click on the card. A crosshair will appear. Shift+click again on the card to remove the crosshair.
To show that one of your creatures attacks an ennemy creature you can produce an arrow from the attacking creature to the attacked one. To do this shift+drag your mouse from your creature to the opponents creature. To remove the arrow shift+click on your creature again. Sometimes the position of your shift+click on the card matters, so you might have to play around a bit.
Press f7 to rotate (exhaust) a card. Useful if you want to cast walls.

That’s it! I hope you have fun playing MW and I would appreciate if you join the MW OCTGN League :).

Good work Charmyna.

I am very happy to help new players learn the OCTGN system. I teach them the mechanics and they teach me new tricks in the game. A very fair deal!

Thanks for that information Charmyna.  I love the game and keep wanting to join OCTGN but have been a little intimidated not knowing the interface, and not really want to hold people up or be that "slow" one while learning it.  So this will help a lot, at least enough to make me feel comfortable enough to give it a try.

Thanks!

Cool thanks.  I will print Charmyna's post out as a reference so I have something to refer to.  And download it and give it a try this week.  Since my friends are not into Mage Wars, I only have 1 regular opponent so don't get to play as often as I like.  So it would be fun to get to play some of you all.  And even though I'm really new to the game what better way to learn than try out different fun strategies and see what some of the other master mages are playing too.

Part of why I love the game is the balance of planning your win conditions but also being able to counter your opponent enough to thwart their win conditions, or at least stay alive long enough to make your plans come to fruition.  There are so many paths to victory in this game it is almost endless.  And the dynamic changes each game so you have to be able to adapt on the fly.

Look forward to perhaps meeting some of you online!   :)

Out of curiosity, how do people build their deck on OCTGN?  Before my core set arrived I tried to build a deck online, but found it pretty hard to know what the cards were.  Now I'm thinking I'll build it real world, then load it into OCTGN.

Is this just what newbies do and once you're familiar as with the cards you do it on the text builder?  Or the cards are necessary?

I started by loading in the default deck(s) and then changing cards in and out as I played IRL, in Octgn you can build from scratch, the default decks are already built, or you can go out on the forums and find someone's build and load it in and play/play test it.

The Deck Builder in Octgn is by far the best out there for building decks. I have tried the all (well I have tried any of the spreadsheet based ones in a while) the ones out there. No comparison.

Not sure if I've got it installed correctly then, I can't see any of the default decks - I can sort by expansion/set type, school etc, can add cards, save and load decks (but don't have anyone elses to load).

There also doesn't seem to be anything that tracks the cost of the deck of whether its legal or not, I can add 9 of a card etc.

Is it possible to load the deckbuilder incorrectly?  Or am I just expecting too much?

@ moonglow

I thought that the standard decks was installed when installing the game module. (i havent used the normal decks so im unsure of this).

Did you try this link for the deck calculator?

http://octgn.gamersjudgement.com/wordpress/magewars/install/

Note that one of the menues in the deckeditor says "plugins". If you installed the deckcalc properly it will be listed in this menu.

The deck builder currently doesn't enforce card limits nor card exclusives. I hope that is fixed in the near future.

I have just played my 1st Online game of Mage Wars!  ;D

Was definitely slow at 1st while I was learning the interface but I think I got it for the most part and ready to play.
Can't wait to meet you all online on OCTGN.  If you want to play let me know!  I'm still a little slow though  :o but I actually picked it up faster than I thought.

I was all intimidated but it wasn't so bad.  Helps having someone nice and patient explain stuff.  Was also cool after he left it keeps the client open so I was about to click and play and explore different features etc.

My name on OCTGN --> Stormmaster

Added you as a friend Stormmaster (You too Charmyna)! My first 2 (Thanks The Dude) games were a blast!

I will say it threw me off even more than I thought it would, (Playing online) But aslong as we are all just trying to have fun- it will be fun.

I wish everything could be just a bit bigger- So I could read the cards traits without having to actually look at them, but thats far from a criticism. The people who worked on this should feel proud.

Post by: Stormmaster on September 14, 2013, 08:37:42 AM
I added you as a friend Darth.  Cheers to new friends!  :D

Darth 2 things for actually seeing things on the card.  You probably saw this but I'm not sure if your reading the card is about the traits or the condition markers on it.  You might have noticed this but just in case...
1.  Hover mouse over any card it puts a HUGE copy of it to view on the left so you can read card traits/details
2.  Use your mouse wheel (in middle) scroll it forward and it makes the whole card huge (including conditions on it) so you can even read the tiny details on the markers.  Like if you forget how much does it cost to remove Weak or what the condition actually does.  It's all on there (just like the board game) just tiny.

It won't mess you up either because after you look just scroll mouse wheel back and you get full screen again so you can see the whole board etc.

I do have a question though.  I swear I saw it somewhere, but what is it to drag the board around?  I can make it bigger or smaller to fill screen but if I want to move it left right up down some what is that?  I tried click drag shift etc etc.  I'm sure it is easy I just didn't see the command for it.

As far as playing itself I misplayed like crazy!  :o  I was so focused on "did I hit that right" ctrl down ctrl right click dragging etc.  that I was paying attention to that and kept thinking crap I wish I would have ...  Trying to remember to put mana on my Gate to Voltari every time they cast a spell, also kept forgetting to regen.  If it put mana on my gate auto when they cast a spell would be cool.  I can kind of see why regen might be manual since everything is free form it might not realize what is actually in a zone.  But I have to remember in real life so it's all good.

One thing that would be really awesome is dice/damage.  I like how it tells you X regular X crit damage would be cool if it did the math for you, subtracted your armor, factors for your Voltaic Shield and just told you how much damage to put on you, or better yet just adjusted your life or put damage counters on the creatures.  BUT it does make it feel more "real" if you have to put condition tokens and damage markers on stuff like the board version.

All in all pretty cool.  I only have 1 friend that plays in real life so will be cool to meet some peeps online to play with.  I've actually never lost a game yet playing the board game version, I can however see losing a LOT of games online lol  :-[

Yeah- Its really cool, I had a blast.

and NO- I had no idea I could zoom in on the cards! thats amazing! Thank you! Some times the big picture wouldn't show up- and even though I remember most of the cards well.... when the time came- Its like I had never seen some of these cards!

I would like to move the board around too! that would be nice to make it just that little bit bigger.

My misplays where things like- Casting Force Wave and THEN wall of thorns- and rolling the wrong attack dice just about every attack! taking the wrong amount of damage- I could go on....but I wont! :P

I will get it though- and I know I want to play again.

If my games with my group end before 3am- I will be on tonight.

Yeah, I've definitely misplayed things online I've practiced cold in real life. I think most people do in the beginning, and no one's said boo about it: everyone seems to understand and are just happy to get a game.

Hi there, new poster here.

So me and gw (RL friend, also new poster) have been mucking about with OCTGN because we live in different towns and mostly figured things out (this thread sure helped with that).

Still got a few questions both about interface mechanics and maybe moreso about common play conventions. Where should those be asked?
This thread doesn't really seem the right place for potentially in-depth discussion, looks like it's mostly about reporting for duty?

Not quite sure what other subforum would best hold it (or if OCTGN discussion is even kosher at all in the rest of the forum).

At some point noone besides me kept using the League. So its kind of expired.
I would really like to see more participation in this league or maybe a new one. Unfortunately I dont have enough time to promote it.
If you want to start a new one, its really easy to set up and I will do my best to help promoting it! If you do, I suggest that you find a couple people who are willing to participate frequently before you start it to make sure its "alive" as soon as it starts.

If you have short to answer questions about OCTGN feel free to ask them here. If youre looking for in-depth discussion about common play conventions maybe the rules subforum is the best place to ask?
Thanks, I'll stay here and try to keep em brief. ^^

Mechanical questions are mostly about handling Enchantments.
- Is there a better/built-in way to cast them other than moving the face down planned ones over and manually subtracting 2 Mana?
- How does one suppress the reflex to double click for casting/processing one gets from casting other cards? That reveal can be awkward. >.<
- Is there a way to actually attach enchantments to their targets? For now, I can only find drawing a box around them to activate them all, then moving that group. Every. Time. I'm pretty sure I saw group movement without the box in some video or other though, so maybe I'm just missing something.

Convention question:
Usually you know/expect full well that you're facing a nullify/block or defense etc and are deliberately trying to draw that out, so will wait for flip/noflip confirm before proceeding in relevant situations. What if you forget? Just roll back to fix it, ignore rolls, and too bad about any inadvertently revealed information?

Semi-mechanical follow-up to that:
Also, any user-friendly way to communicate these things with button press chat outputs (like the "is done" ctrl right) or HUD displays or something? With chatbox being active killing the game interface, the whole affair seems incredibly onerous imo.

1. At this time no, but I will look in to it, probably will not happen soon.

2. How would folks feel about a modal are you sure window just for Hidden Enchantment? I am thinking out loud here, the dev would be able to answer the feasibility. But would that resolve the problem?

3. The OCTGN environment itself does not provide this capability. It can be scripted, is my understanding but is not currently within any plans.

Typically I will wait after I flip my card and ask Block, etc. and then wait for a response.

Chat / Game are like that on-purpose. A shift+l in the chat window will get you a upper case L, in game it will get you a Slam marker on a card, etc. There are no ways to fire off chat items at the moment. What would they do or say?

the whole affair seems incredibly onerous imo.
Really? Really? Really? It's free, development is done out of joy and love of the game. I would think not having to cleanup my spellbook after the game as a great positive, not having to cleanup the markers after the game as a great positive, keeping track of mana, like, etc. a great positive. Having to click in the chat screen to type something and then click anywhere else on the game screen one time, as at the most slightly annoying.

I don't want to chase anyone off, I am just trying to put in a comparative analysis in and I might be a bit incredulous as being one of the two people currently putting in the hours to make this implementation the best that we can.

I find OCTGN amazing for all the positive aspects you mentioned! Im sure after a couple of games most players will be grateful for everything it offers. Glad youre spending your time making it better and pls keep doing it! Cant live without OCTGN! ;)

It takes a few games to get used to it.

Im happy that it has so much table top feel. Contrary to other digitalized gamed Board games playing MW on OCTGN actually feels like playing an actual board game.

When that is said i too appreciate some of the goodies OCTGN gives such as:
Good overview of the entire spellbook
No status cubes flying around - accidently changing HP / MANA
All Things are tracked in the chat for easy reference in case of doubt (did i take that mana on Voltari?)
No cleanup - especially putting the cards back in spellbooks.
Most importantly: Easy access to other players.

the dev would be able to answer the feasibility.

*bing*

- Is there a better/built-in way to cast them other than moving the face down planned ones over and manually subtracting 2 Mana?

Currently, no, as the game does not differentiate between casting a facedown enchantment on something and just moving the card around.

Quote
- How does one suppress the reflex to double click for casting/processing one gets from casting other cards? That reveal can be awkward. >.<

That will come with time. However it is certainly possible to put in a little "Are you sure?" window whenever a player double-clicks a face-down enchantment.

Quote
- Is there a way to actually attach enchantments to their targets? For now, I can only find drawing a box around them to activate them all, then moving that group. Every. Time. I'm pretty sure I saw group movement without the box in some video or other though, so maybe I'm just missing something.

This is possible via scripting. If cards could be attached to each other, then your first issue could be worked into that as well (pay two mana whenever you attach an enchantment to something else). There are a few things to consider though, like how people put equipment/enchantments on their Mage off to the side of the board.

This has been in the back of my mind as part of a long-term add-more-automation initiative but I don't have a ballpark date for you. Right now I am going after low hanging fruit like resolving Burn tokens automatically.

The rulebook says that if you illegally flip something like a Block or Nullify, it is destroyed without effect. A bit harsh but the most fair IMO. If you forget to reveal a Block or Nullify then rolling back is a solution, destroying the enchantment without effect is another. Whatever you decide should benefit your opponent, though, as you misplayed.

Usually what I do is the shift + click thing to draw the arrow to show what I am targeting with my spell, then wait for my opponent to say "ok" or reveal in response.

It is certainly possible to add more text messages to the game. I am not sure that adding additional information in a HUD is possible - I am pretty sure OCTGN only shows cards, markers, and the like on the board. I don't think that even something like floating text is possible. Even if it were possible it would take a good effort to get that HUD to sync between the players (OCTGN automatically syncs the cards/markers/etc for us). Since the chat window is already sync'd it doesn't make much sense to spend time implementing something that already exists, know what I mean?

Thanks for the clarifications, just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

(And I didn't want to disrespect anyone with the onerous comment. Coming from WoW et al, anything that would make me even think about "hey, I should get out some Teamspeak/Skype for this" is onerous in my book. Especially WoW. :P)

Someone who care to teach me how it works? I have made a deck and seen Charmyna's intro video (very good guide!).
How do you/I match up and find people to play with? Just sit and wait in the chat room?
Thanks!

I wondered if there is interest in starting a new league - if only to organize online presence a bit :)
I would love to see someone start one - I know it's always a bit stupid to ask for someone else to do it, but I have a very tight working schedule and would hate to organize/start sth just to have to drop it soon after.

Anyway, love the game  8)

My urge to play MW completely disappears when I see spoilers for the next expansion.
I think its because im too lazy to spend time fine tuning or building new spellbooks that will more or less become obsolete when the next expansion is out.

The Facebook group is named:

Can someone post some tips for how some of the following aspects of play are managed by Octgn?

Making a creature your Pet (or bloodreaper etc) - at the moment I've just paid more mana and then dragged the pet token over.

Summoning a creature with a spawn point - at the moment I've double clicked the extra spell during planning, so it comes out face down.  Then I've dragged it to the spawnpoint and in deployment double clicked it.  That seems to work.

This is the correct way to handle this currently.

Sound like you got it right, you prepare the spell by double clicking on it from your Spellbook/Hand it will then be placed face down on to the mages spell preparation area. You then drag it and drop it on top of the Spawnpoint, it should "bind" to it, and when you are in the Deployment phase you double click on the bound spell to cast it, OCTGN will automaticly use the mana on the Spawnpoint first and then the Mages if any is needed.

Hope this helps!

Hi SIke, yeah the inline tutorial was very helpful, but some of the basics in the first post of this thread helped too.  One of the hardest things to find was zooming and that made a real difference.

Probably some of the things to list would be what OCTGN doesnt manage - in a way I spent a lot of time trying to work out how to do things it doesnt look like it handles (like Pet).  Doing it manually is fine, once you know you have to :)

I watched the start of the youtube, how to play a game which helped as well.  I didn't watch it all though as I just wanted to play :)

It would be great if there was all this linked in one place inside the game - probably just expanding the how to play section, which again is very helpful.
