Ranged attack and flying
« on: October 25, 2012, 12:38:14 PM »
Alright, another question that occurred to me :P So a flyer in the same zone as an archer is fair game (representing, I would assume, the vertical distance). Shouldn't that also work when you give an archer the flying trait? I realize the rules as currently written do not specifically allow for that but going off of the assumption that things in this game make sense, I was wondering if that might be something to consider :)

We are currently in process of going over the rule book. I will bring this up.

Agreed and noted gentlemen.  We will insert this into the next rulebook print and also coming rules FAQ.

Yay, I contributed! :D Along the same lines, what would you think about a flying archer vs a flying creature in the same zone? I'm thinking no shot, but would like to know for sure.

I am compelled to agree sir.  It makes good sense and we want things to work logically and realistically!  Nice job - thanks!

I'd like to reconsider from a point of logic (as in mathematical logic; 1 = 1).

Rules as they are now:

Melee
Melee can attack melee (same zone only)

Rangers/Archers
Rangers can attack any flyers in range. (minimum: same zone - maximum: 1 or 2 )
Rangers can attack at distance: 1 or 2 zones
Rangers can't attack point blank on ground.

Flyers
Flyers can attack Melee by diving to the ground. (Same zone)
Flyers can attack other Flyers as in Melee attack (Same zone)

This conclusion above is correct for:
Rangers can't attack point blank on ground. (In this case "air")

However this contradicts:
Rangers can attack any flyers in range. (minimum: same zone - maximum: 1 or 2 )

So there no logic in telling a "Flying Ranger" would loose his ability to shoot any flyer in his space,
it would contradict the definition or "being a Ranger".
He could dive to the ground or soar to the air to create distance to shoot the target.
Would also seem realistic in my world :)

you are assuming that the act of flying grants the greater speed necessary, which indeed in some cases it seems too.  however since most melee actions are quick and most ranged actions are full perhaps that has something to do with it...  just speculating.

Here is the clarification we intend to publish:

A flying archer can target both flyers and non-flyers in his zone, even if they are below his minimum range.

The explanation is this:  A zone is not 2 levels, it has many levels to it.  The lowest level is on the ground (non-flying), and all the other levels are in the air (flying).  A creature in the air can be anywhere in those higher levels above the ground.  Thus, only creatures on the lowest level, on the ground, have to be concerned with minimum range when attacking other creatures on their level.
