Spellbook Design and Construction / Forcemaster 2-on-2 build
« on: December 30, 2013, 07:44:36 AM »
Submitted for your approval:
I used this Forcemaster book in a 4-player team game last night (Priest/Warlock v Beastmaster/Forcemaster). It's similar to the list I'd use in a 1-on-1 game, but with the Beastmaster on my side there was no potential for any shenanigans with Mordok's obelisk or suppression orb.

Rules Discussion / Divine reward + mage wand
« on: December 20, 2013, 05:19:17 PM »
Played with a friend last night who was using the priestess and a mage wand bound to a group heal spell. Since group heal spell is a holy incantation, every time he cast it from the wand the priestess player invoked Divine Reward and quickly had a huge amount of life. This seemed like an odd application of the rule, but correct as I read it.  Can divine reward be used this way( and yes, I know I should have dissolved the wand early, but that's not the discussion I want to have right now)?

Rules Discussion / Do ring bonuses stack on enchantments?
« on: December 18, 2013, 10:04:47 PM »
This has probably been covered somewhere else, but I can't find it:
The enchanter's ring grants the casting mage a 1 mana discount when casting an enchantment once per turn, but it doesn't specify whether this is to the casting or reveal cost, so I assume it's to the casting cost.

The ring of curses and force ring (and maybe some other rings I'm not thinking about right now) specifically say that they give bonuses once per turn to specific types of spells, and if the spells are enchantments they only get the bonus to the reveal cost.

So could a warlock wearing both an enchanter's ring and a ring of curses get a 1 mana discount to the casting cost of an enchantment curse and a 1 mana discount to the reveal cost of an enchantment curse in the same turn?

Mana flower – 9

Turn 2 – 20
Ring of beasts – 18
Timberwolf pet – 6

Turn 3 – 17
Redclaw – 1
Probably nothing since I’m down to 1 mana - 1

Obviously around this point I'll start trying to either summon more creatures or drag Fellela out, harmonize her, and make her start enchanting things.

It's my first book, so I'm anxious for thoughts.

Spells / Does ring of beasts reduce the cost of animals summoned by Lair?

So does it?

Spells / When is the best time to summon Redclaw?
« on: December 15, 2013, 12:40:47 PM »
What it says in the subject header - I'd like to use Redclaw to buff my canines, but am not sure when to summon him. Conventional wisdom says to summon Big Bads during the early turns, but Redclaw's Alpha Male trait doesn't help on turn 1, and he'll have a bullseye painted on his chest as your opponent tries to deal with him before the Bitterwood swarm or Timberwolves make their appearance. On the other hand, I'm not sure I'll have the mana available in the mid- to late-game for a big summon.

Strategy and Tactics / economy of conjurations
« on: December 07, 2013, 08:41:59 AM »
New to Mage Wars and trying to figure out the early game sequence. There's a lot of helpful advice on economy of actions and of mana, but it seems like there's an economy of conjurations, too. Most conjurations seem to be zone exclusives, so you're only going to put so many down before you either run out of space or your opponent starts torching them. In addition, every time you cast a conjuration you're using mana and actions up without summoning creatures or attacking your opponent. So is there a sweet spot for number of conjurations or for the ratio between mana conjurations like flower/crystal, spawnpoint conjurations, or buffing conjurations like Tooth and Claw? And when and how often should conjurations be cast?
