Rings together with Familiar
« on: May 23, 2013, 05:35:33 AM »
Hi,
Please direct me to the appropriate topic if this has been answerd before.

What if I have a ring that gives me a disscount to the mana cost, will my Familiary get the same discount?

I will redirect you to the text on the card.

The rings i have seen so far all says "when your mage...." or "this mage...."

A different example is the beastmasters pet ability. This ability is not limited to an animal the beastmaster summoned (animal from lair works too), because of the wording on the beastmaster card.

Thats just an example to show that the wording on the rings would have been different if they applied to familiars.

I should revoke it for the Thrift Shop reference.

It is worth pointing out that a ring that gives a mana discount for revealing an enchantment does credit the mage, even if a familiar cast it.

If a Warlock is using Sersirex (an imp familiar who can cast curses) and Ring of Curses, Sersirex pays the full cost of 2 mana to lay the curse down, but once it hits the table it becomes an object owned/controlled by the Warlock and thus his Ring of Curses does discount the cost to reveal it.

Thanks! As I thought then.

So, I guess if the Serirex pay a part of the reveal cost the mage still gets the discount?

Serirex can't pay for reveal costs at all, just the initial placement cost.

Correct familiars only pay for casting.

Okey, that was new to me. We have always play with the discount once it is revealed...
This means you get the discout in different phases with Enchanter's Ring vs. e.g Ring of Curses. Am I right?

Yes, since the Enchanter's Ring card text states "this Mage may pay one less mana when he casts" thus the discount occurs at the time of casting.

As a side note: Unless a player is cheating you know he is playing an enchantment because it is face down, with a curse it's not clear until it is revealed so it wouldn't really be possible to gain the benefit at casting without letting your opponent know you had cast a curse.
