Title: New to druid
Post by: TheVineMarkers on May 11, 2017, 09:54:56 AM
Hello all!
I am new to mage wars in general, just picked it up two weeks ago and have enjoyed the aspect of theory crafting ever since. I have read many posts on here, before I joined the forum. Well,I joined the forum and now i'm starting to see more things that werent evident before. For instance mage wars academy cards being used, interesting. So.. I've made my first spellbook and would like some skeptic criticism. Thanks!

Welcome to Mage Wars and to the Forums!

Druids really strong with real strong ability to effect most of the arena.

You could post your spellbook in the spellbook section, but really

Play, Play, Play!

Is the best advice i can give.

Welcome!
Druid is SUPER strong. Many players consider her one of the best if not the best mage.
Druid actually doesn't have that many ways to play primarily because her plant selection and mage specific cards are really limited.
That doesn't affect her performance though.
She's really hard to get right (the hardest mage along with siren to play well/ get right imo) and I would not recommend to new players. However, if you want to test her out, by all means go ahead!

The lack of teleport is because I'm gonna use thornlashers,I know it seems offputting but I figure I have the armor to deal with it,could be wrong. I was also opting for rain cloud in here somewhere, but tarok is temporary until it arrives in the mail :P May have to playtest it. But that's pretty much it,Using stuck conditions for spider, etc etc. Think my deck is pretty self explanatory,if you're confused on anything id be glad to answer! Spent 5 hours putting this together what I feel to be effective. I grabbed both trees because I feel like I can have a more aggressive approach if id like, using seedlings to turn into mana flowers later on perhaps, while I go into the NC and start causing madness there. Could be wrong, just theory crafted is all. I read alot of posts from ACG and violentray. And I know silverclaw always recommends the grizzlies :P Oh.. Also note the ferals are for kral, but I got mw academy on its way for the asps to replace. And those awesome enchants..

Druid is the best mage.

you can go all plant based, or plants and animals.

I go all plant based, with a heavy focus on enchantments traps walls and Push / Pull spells.

I have no idea what to do with the Siren.... I want to like her, but I'm so lost.

Speak of the devil! lol That's not a bad gig,I'm very partial to my giant spider though :'( Always good to throw some confusing and game changing conditions in there. Armor doesn't mean much when you rip through 3 hp an upkeep with slows and holds :P

You can try playing Siren similar to Druid. Shallow Seas replace vines  for the hindering effect. While they cost more in mana and actions they can be cast 2 zones away and Naiya is a moving Spawnpoint for Shallow Seas, among other uses. Meeren Harpooners and Kraken replace Thornlashers. Coral Reef replaces Bloodspine wall. Plus Siren has that Tsunami spell and ability to call creatures though the Coral Reefs. Crocodile and Hunting Bow could even combine but I haven't tried that combo yet.

Yep this is the way I have played her to have pretty good success.  It takes longer to setup due to mana cost.  But it is super effective with shallow sea, urchins, + wall.  I also go pretty heavy on equipment making it tough for her to get hit.

Very interesting. I had the idea that may have been wrong, but I thought it best to stick to one mage to learn strengths and weaknesses. That's how I usually play games anyhow xD
Title: Re: New to druid

thst is good. but to play better against other mages i think it is very helpful to have played them yourself. you would have better insight on what to expect from an opponent. and having played them, it may improve your book building for your preferred mage.

i also think the ad duel tournament where everyone had to play different mages for each match was a great idea. forced participants outside their comfort zone.

Very valid points,I appreciate all of the feedback. Thankyou all so much, any peeves on the book? I'm sure there will be alot :P
Title: Re: New to druid

good luck in your matches. one comment i would foreshadow is that no book survives contact with the enemy. i would not be surprised if after a match or two at most you see that there are at least a few things you would swap out.

not sure the xfusions are needed.

You think maybe if i were running fewer enchants? Seemed like a good option if something were about to die or be unsavable, just swap em out on over. I could be wrong, strictly theorycrafted :P

Very good spellbook, Sir!

I would remove harmonize - seem you have enough in school channeling.

Some of the new spells you did not include:
Pillar, Lesser Teleport, Meredias Blessing and Chitin Armor.

You don´t have the newest sets?

Lesser Teleport is real good in Druid to move plants.

Oh and i think Renewing Rain is.. ehh Useless
Raincloud, Renewing Spring, Waterfall Cloak, Wand of Healing, Cure i like them all a lot better.

Thankyou biblo! They are actually on their way in the mail :P lesser teleport? I've been spellbook building online Idk if that spell is even in there, and i bought rainclouds just waiting on them aswell. Although ill probably only run one.. and probably only have it over my trees :P Gotta keep em healthy and sane! (Just checked they are not on there) I use this forum spellbook builder.. Perhaps there is a better one? I appreciate the feedback tons! Chitin armor will become a must then, aswell as raincloud you've backed up my initial thought process :P I'll have to look those new spells up and adjust my build. Wand of healing you say? Curious..

Looks pretty good!
I think you might want to cut the Samara tree and pods since a double tree build is pretty slow.
Also watch out how many animals you run and the mana cost of them since you will have to hardcast them

Cut the samara AND seedlings you think? I can see the seedlings being good for atleast redirected attacks, etc. And if they leave them be they are in trouble too :P If i cut the pods I might as well cut tata too, then again.. Maybe not.. He's like having an extra regen essentially. Decisions decisions.. Thought the samara was clever :P

It is!
Samara is just not widely regarded as very good and double tree is a VERY slow build.

Oh ok I see. Save the spellpoints! Ok,that was up in the air anyhow. Just thought attrition would maybe be possible while being unpredictable and aggressive, but it did complicate how I was planning to start the game anyhow :P Maybe now I can get an ammy, but no battleforge. Consuming I say!

Hi again!

Just want to say again that i think your spellbook is pretty strong as it is.

I looked in my own Druid book and we have ~35 identical cards and ~35 that are different.

No mayor differences. Got slightly different crew than your - not really worth mentioning.

A few points:
Samara Tree likely to be slower, but if you don´t play timed games why not include it?
Even if you remove Samara Tree you might still hang on to one Seedling Pod. Put it out early and it might grow into Kralathor or something similar.
With a Seedling Pod you might add a Wall of Thorns - just because Pods can transform into a WoT.

I still want to build and try a Druid that runs 2 and QC Samara Tree in the FC. (Without Treebond)

A few spells im missing:
Rust. Even better with Enchantment Transfusion and an extra Cheastpiece. Remove Corrode tokens and put a Rust on an opponent creature?  ::)

Seeking Dispel. Just a spell i always put into books and use almost all games.

Dispels/Dissolve. 3 seems to be Forum standard - you could pack more or less, but i would just recommend trying out Remove Curse, Disperse and Crumble as well. Just a good way to try and test some of the never spells.

Falcon Precision. At 1 spellbookpoint!

And then just a bit more on condition removal. I'm not 100% sure, but i believe you can target yourself and your plant with Extinguish(Surging Wave in your spellbook). Put out the burn tokens without rolling dice and slam/push effect :) Even on the Hydro Immune plants.

For a spellbook builder : www.spellbookbuilder.com
I'm using the one on OCTGN. You know you can play online as well :)
Id be happy to play a mirrormatch with you.

You might be thinking of Geyser... it doesn't have the Extinguish keyword, but the text on that spell says that you remove burns. You remove all burns and cancel the attack.

Using Surging Wave for this is a bit more chancy, and can indeed Slam your creature (and Push you if you don't have something that prevents that). I forget the rules on the Extinguish trait, so I don't want to steer you wrong here... I just know that you do, in fact, attack yourself if you want to use it like Geyser.

Edit: I also believe that Hydro immunity does prevent you from attacking with these two spells, since they have the Hydro keyword, though those who know better than I might know whether this is so.
Title: Re: New to druid
Post by: Puddnhead on May 12, 2017, 07:53:24 PM
Hydro Immunity protects against any hydro spell even targeting the immune creature.  EXCEPT for the case where you wish to use the Extinguish trait to remove burns.  In that instance you may target the hydro immune creature with a hydro spell.

While using extinguish (which is mandatory) you roll one fewer die per burn being removed (to a minimum of one die ) and you subtract one from the effect die per burn being removed. It's totally worth it sometimes!

Thanks for that again biblo,How would I play online? That sounds like an amazing idea to me! And I appreciate the advice and my idea was the two trees aswell! Just would be hard to put fel and tata out aswell, you know? If someone is utmost aggressive it'd be interesting. I've been considering removing my beloved spider and replacing with a grizzly,i'm waiting for more cards to come in to be sure of my action. The academy enchants seem worthwhile to me.Id love to mirror match you though, what better way to learn the game :P

Some spells in recent expansions really spice up Druid play as well. Consider Shoalsdeep Crocodile, Ring of Water (name may be off here), Elephant Grass (a plant you can use Seedling Pods to cast), Swamp (low spell point cost for Druid), and some new water school equipment.
Title: Re: New to druid
Post by: TheVineMarkers on May 13, 2017, 09:11:37 AM
 8) Swamp? I was looking at some of the sharks, with the bleed passives. Druid has a decent chunk of bleed aswell, could see varying possibilities. I always try to be creative, meta game is too standardized.. I also think that someone can only fit a certain amount of counters in that book :P I havent looked at all the new cards yet, can't wait until they arrive tomorrow. I'll have to see what swamp does.. I've been debating sticking that angel in here everyone else does, but I feel like shes more of a tree guard and raincloud could suffice for cheaper. But then factor in burst heals.. And it's not sbp cheaper. Then again,it's a lot more flexible so potentially worth that couple more sbp's. I wouldn't know how good she is D:

the bleed direction is how i have my druid built at the moment. it has been generally successful even against fire mages.

Solid! Seems like just about anything can work, seems pretty damn flexible to me. You just stack bleeds with bot's Im assuming?
Title: Re: New to druid

I think you want to go down to 2-3 rhino hides mainly because as a druid, I tend to not like enchanting my plants and look at them more as expendable.

Are you using a Hunting Bow with an animal? I thought about combining the bow with a crocodile,  a dire wolf and plants to support. Haven't tried all my current builds yet so I haven't tried this one. Just thought about the possibilities.

no bow at moment. probably will not.
Title: Re: New to druid
Post by: TheVineMarkers on May 14, 2017, 02:17:20 AM
I can see the strength of the bow, just hard to adjust to that style kinda for me personally. Then again with Los walls, etc. I can see it being very potent and at the least a steady bleed or fallback on. I get my cards today gonna tinker and let you guys know what I did, thanks to grizzly I'll be at gencon this year, didn't realize it was so close! But back to the core of it,bleed is a very good and easily obtainable strategy IMO. I've been considering attempting the tainted markers but to rely on that I feel grizzly is just an all-around more solid choice. But I have 2 atm on the new deck, considering cutting one and seeing what kind of swamp bleeds I can run in conjunction. So many possibilities and ideas. Has anyone messed with tainted markers? With alll the restraints and stuck for the effect die I can see him being a high priority target. But just not sure how well they can run as opposed to more die attacks for same sbp I guess it comes down to dwindling or straivght damage. If all else it's a good way to expend purified possibly?
Title: Re: New to druid

In case you haven't read it elsewhere already, a lot of Druid players prefer [mwcard=MWSTX1CKC06]Guardian Angel[/mwcard] to [mwcard=DNC18]Togorah, Forest Sentinel[/mwcard]:
- Same total sbp cost
- WAY cheaper in mana to cast
- WAY cheaper to move around (to follow your Druid or whatever)
- Aside from being a great Guard, a Flying creature can come in handy for a Druid
- Not Legendary, so you can play more than 1 at a time
Title: Re: New to druid

Very true, and I also considered it. But that being said the angel can't be cast from a seedling pod =p

Actually I've dumbed it down to one,the way I see it is distraction or big pay off,and I got Tata anyways because I've actually had a clutch game where he kept my tree alive with that 1 heal a turn,or 1 mana for additional vinespread just synergy for me

- seedling pod is great to cast early and let it sit in the corner for a long time. Chances are very high that the opponent will never attack it because of all your other, more urgent traits.

- Togorah is way better than guardian angel and you can get the vine ring discount with him.

1) he can melee attack with 6(!) dice 7-10 daze and 11+ stun AND guard (+ intercept) afterwards)
2) unlike the angel, he can't be pushed away in order to mitigate the guard.
3) A good druid doesn't have to move very often but let's the opponent move or moves the opponent herself
4) IF you need to run, Togorah can move 2 and guard. So in a way he is fast.
5) Guardian angel is very durable, yes, but Togorah is even more durable. 2 armor, 18 life and regen 2 is big. A little support if needed makes him "immortal".
6) Flying and his reach get cancelled out for the most part. Togorah is much more capable to deal with flyers than the angel because of his big attack and can even attack flyers when restrained. stun can bring flyers down too.

I have never understood the hate that this forum gives Togorah. He totally rocks.

The main two issues with him I think are his cost/setup, and his lack of a quick action attack.

I would feel irresponsible if i didn't point out that the vine tree itself cannot pay for additional vines during deployment. That mana must come from your mage. In this manner tataree cannot help you with additional mana for the spreading vines ability.

The main two issues with him I think are his cost/setup, and his lack of a quick action attack.

Probably yes. He's not cheap. His lack of a quick action attack is in my experience not as bad with things like thornlashers, bloodspine walls, stuck markers and tanglevine (with vine tree). placing and keeping the opponent where you want is probably one of the strongest points of the druid.
