Shift Enchantment question
« on: April 17, 2013, 08:52:55 AM »
I have a question about the shift enchantment spell and enchantments with Magebind.  The shift enchantment spell states that the casting cost x is the level of enchantment if it is revealed. I cast an enchantment like Circle of Fire on a non-mage creature it would cost 2 mana to cast and 4 to reveal. The cost of moving this spell to another non-mage creature would be 2, it is a level 2 spell.  What would the cost be to move it to a mage?
My thoughts are conflicted. Looking at the rules for magebind the +2 is paid when the spell is revealed. Since the reveal cost has been paid therefore the shifting cost should be 2.  The total cost for casting and revealing it on the mage would be the same as casting it on a non-mage and moving it.  This does not seem quite right.

 Welcome to the forums leonej!

Edit: You do not have to pay the mage bind cost.As shift enchantment never refers to the reveal cost, only a cost equal to the level.

 Hope that helps!

I agree with your evaluation and want to thank you for the response, it was a similar argument that I used after the game. However, rules-lawyers would continue that the Shift enchantment spell does not refer to the reveal cost, it states that the cost is equal to the level of the spell if it is revealed.
Which would allow the shift enchantment spell to fall under the 'magic rule' on conflict between the text on a spell card and the rules.

Well, now that I read the card,(I thought I knew it) It says X= the level of the enchantment if it is revealed. So I very well could be wrong on this one...It says nothing about the cost, only the level. I think I may of answered this prematurely..Sorry, You stated that very clearly, I dont know how I misread it. Again, Shad0w will be along shortly.

I really do not think it is a major issue, not game changing.  In the example above it would cost 2 mana to cast the Circle of Fire and 6 to reveal it, if it was cast on a mage. Shifting it from a non-mage to a mage would be similar cost overall. Two to cast, 4 to reveal, (non-mage) and 2 plus the additional quick cast to move it to a mage.
In the first example you are spending one quick-cast and a total of 8 mana.  Moving it would cost you 8 mana and two quick-cast actions.  I dare say it is six of one and half-dozen of the other.  Regardless it is an interesting discussion.

Alright...I found another thread on the topic.

http://magewars.com/jsite/forum/4-rules-discussion/1586-shift-enchantment

It seems that you do not have to pay the mage bind cost.

I am very sorry for the confusion...Im not sure what I was thinking.

Shift Enchantment is a really fun card to play with.

One of my favorite moves is to use Shift Enchantment on curses as a cheap way to bait out Nullifies. If Nullify triggers on Shift Enchantment, the shift enchantment is countered but the curse stays on its original target so you still get some benefit out of it!

Shift Enchant costs only 1 mana on a facedown or level-1 spell, making it cheaper than Decoy (when decoy is Nullified, it is countered so you don't get the 2 mana back). Like Decoy it is a Novice spell so you can put it in your spellbook for just 1 point.
