LuckiestLuke played an experimental Titanodon-focused Dwarf Warlord book and I fought against it with a newly built Straywood, focused on using the emerald elk staff in one hand and the healy scepter staff that you can hit people with in the other hand to keep your creatures alive.

I opened with doubleflower into joined strength pet direwolf.
He opened with flower+doublemove into Titanodon and another flower.

I immediately used a nullify on the grey fatty, guarded with my big dog and equiped the faith healer's staff.
He walked one step, burned an enchant on my nully and placed a Ballista. Titanodon followed him, we were now one zone apart.

He opened next turn with his Ini, walking a step away from me and into his ballista zone, then enchanting the elephant again. Ballista hit my Direwolf for 5 and I kept joined strength face-down to bluff some more and because I was bad at math and thought I needed the mana. I then put the Titanodon to sleep with a sleepyflower and doublemoved into the Ballista zone, together with my trusty dog.

From then on, I tried to fortify my hold on the Ballista zone with a Vine Snapper, an acid plant and a snake, while he woke his Titanodon, pushed me out for a crossbow bolt and some Titanodon kicks and moved out for some safety and to plant a forge.

My wolf mauled his Titanodon to death and then died shortly after that, my Snek chased the dwarf and gave him tons of weaks. My Snapper died, too. We reached a point where he had some equip, 20 damage on him and I had about 4 dmg on me with nothing but the sparkly healy staff in my hands. I summoned a Crocodile Pet and placed an acid flower into his forge zone, he summoned an iron golem and hit me in the face with a few rocks, boulders and a Pillar of burning rage. I still didn't put on any armor, fool that I am. All I used for defense was a cobra reflex onto my Mage. Some teleports made sure I ate 8 dice from Pillar per turn.

The game ended with his golem Battlefurying me up to 33 dmg, which my Pet Crocodile and my sleepy mist plant and my Acid ball responden to by hitting him up to 33 dmg. The then bouldered me to bits.

The end.

Noteworthy:
Dice were pretty high that match, for both of us. Even if I'd revealed Joined strength earlier and even if my Healy staff of hitting things had rolled better heals on the Direwolf, the killing blow brought it to 18 dmg. That's rather dead, even for a Pet.

The Titanodon-Focus costs a lot of actions, but I feel I used less actions to get rid of it than he used on getting it to work. Ballista and forge still gave him an action advantage. My book tries to explicitly win without forge though, since Elk stave and Faith healer's already eat mana.

While I did lose on a hair's breadth, I most importantly lost because I thought Cobra reflexes could replace Armor and got Mage-Sniped. He won because Forge is rather good at supplying necessary stuff like an armor and a teleport wand and a regrowth belt.

I still liked my approach of securing zones with plants, be they creatures or conjurations. I tried something similar with Johktari a while ago and I can't quite say who's wearing it better yet.

What do you think about the match? Did I even describe it enough for you to have anything to think about?
What do you think about the format? I know I skipped some stuff in the middle, but I don't think I could go through a whole match with detailed action-for-action protocols... Much less if I'm only bored at work and working from memory like I'm doing right now :D

Lastly, for the mods: Did I post this in the right place? Feel free to move the thread if I didn't.

I'd guess we're gonna get more Mummies. Zombies are already pretty diverse, on top of the ability to zombify more other creatures.

Those two faces are old though. They've been in that spread image with all the mages.

Just tried to build a Johktari out of this and found a huge flaw in the way I build the book.

Added a warning to the OP.

Yo, Keej.

Sorry. That clickbait absolutely accidentally somehow slipped in there without me noticing  :-\  8)

You get my drift though. Just trying to make Bookbuilding less of a hassle.

As for the sbp: Bigfat actually convinced me here, 100sbp would probably be a better change than 120. Then again, I'm just personally against change anywhere. I like Mage Wars the way it is, even if this thread is kinda lampshading one of my perceived flaws.

Concerning Heal or Minor Heal:
I rarely ever play heals. Just ain't my style. Even my Paladin has two Vampirisms instead of using those 12 sbp on heals :D

Funny enough, Borg just expressed one of the reasons I made this book and the Post.

I basically have 35 sbp for "individual" Deckbuilding, if I use this staple.

Beldin makes a fair counterpoint though, there's always bound to be staples in games. Some things just work out better than others and some specific counters cannot be overlooked.

Yo Dave,

a standard swap list would defeat the purpose of lessening my workload. I know I'm not gonna use three teleports and three dispels+seekings in a warlord, same as I know I'll be using quicks instead of tangles with him. Your thought is correct, there will be swaps whenever I actually build a book with this, but I don't think that kinda swaplist's gonna be useful.

Yo Bigfat,

I see you understand the purpose of this thread :) I actually debated using boulder and/or hammer, but I mostly don't use finisher spells (might be a mistake, but that's my style).
With Hawkeye and Bear strenght, honestly, you're always gonna find a use. I don't always like crumble, because as a solo mage player, I usually don't want to waste a full action when it could also be a strong attack.
As for the amounts of some spells, I just chose to go with this for now. I might change it around if I find it's too oppressive for the rest of bookbuilding.

Yo there, Red.

So you're saying it would be smart to use something similar for you, just with less/other cards? That's smart of you.

The sun was setting in the distance, flooding the sky with different hues of red and orange, only interrupted by some dark clouds, a flock of black birds and the smoke rising from the burning castle. The ground was dipped in red as well, as I strode over scorched earth, trying to avoid all the arrows, swords and torn limbs lying around. There was no point in trying to avoid the blood. Might as well try to avoid the piss when swimming in a children's pool. My boots and half my pants were already suited to camouflage me on this post-battlefield when I finally found its owner. He didn't have any fans and followers around this time. Just a gruntled old man, who somehow managed to menacingly clean up this acre of mess.

"Lord Crage," I called out, waving my hands. Startled, he jerked his head around, with a wild and hunted look to his face. One of his eyes still had the embers of dark powers glowing behind its Iris, the other just stared at me, ashen and grey. It took him a second to recognize me and another to find his composure, but he subtly shifted his pose, rammed the ornate shovel into the ground with his remaining arm and waved back to me, some of his old arrogance returning to face and posture.

"I've been expecting you. Heard you coming a mile away and smelled your perfumes even before that," he said after just having shaken off the shock from being surprised by me.

"Not smelling of death, smoke and defeat kind of sets me apart from the place. Small wonder I'm sticking out." I chose to go along with his facade. Might get me some better answers from him. As I said that, a root came out of the ground and slithered up his leg like a snake. He eyed it for a second, as if weighing up different ways to violently get rid of it. In the end, he just sighed and shook his leg loose.
"So what was that thing you said about gardeners and warriors when I interviewed you?"
"I said that I wasn't preparing for fights against gardeners."
"You sure proved that point. That looked as unprepared as it gets."

The root came back, tugging at his foot. This time, he scorched it with flames from his hand. As he tried to beat out his burning robe, I looked at the remaints of battle around us.
"Is that Sardonyx over there?"
"No, that's the other gigantic bone dragon that got sacrificed against me." Sarcasm was dripping from his voice. He was obviously past the point of smalltalk.
"What did you think about his master, your first opponent?"
"He was good. Takes a lot of balls to summon the damn beast and even better judgement to get him out and actually have him be useful. Almost beat me, too."
"What about the other opponent you defeated? That ended on a knife's edge as well."
"Wizards are a tough bunch. He was pretty close to winning, but his concentration slipped near the end. I got to say I enjoyed crushing and suffocating him almost as much as I love to curse someone to a slow death."
"The other wizard was even tougher. Do you think you'd have won if..."
"If I didn't fuck myself square in the face by walking into his purge? I don't think we'll ever find out. It would have been less onesided and I'd sure make him suffer. Can't say if I'd win it though."

He looked to the horizon, towards the direction where the other battles would start soon. His ashen eye flared up, glowing red for a heartbeat and a look of regret and longing stole itself onto his face. I wanted to ask a question, but he answered it without me asking.
"I honestly don't think I could have survived being the thing that blocks Enti from entering the finals, much less blocking Juli from reaching Enti. Those two are going to crush all opposition. Juli's out for blood after having to stand on the sidelines at the end of the Sprudelhof battles. I pity his opponents. Most of the people who advanced so far don't have enough good books for their fights any more. Juli doesn't have enough fights left for his good books."
He grabbed the shovel and went back to his work. A small imp landed next to us, also carrying a shovel. As I looked across the battlefield, I noticed the carrion birds almost systematically working as if they were helping remove the corpses. A zombified Direwolf was literally digging its own grave and I could have sworn the scarred stump that reached out from Crage's shoulder had been shorter a few minutes ago. As he turned away to silently dismissed me, I asked a final question that had been nagging me.
"What burned your castle? None of your losses involved fire."
"That? Me. Place was overrun with lashers and Gremlins. I burned it all. I'll rebuild it even better and you bet I'll be there for the next battle. Write that into your damn report. Doesn't matter where they are, who they are or how strong they are. There's good days, there's bad days. Night follows day, lights fade to dark. And in that darkness, I'll wait. When my time comes, theirs is up."

Spellbook Design and Construction / THE Book.

Big Edit: If you're making one of these, just add a mage and a mage stats card. If you save the book with an empty "mage" slot, it's gonna move the pot down, which causes all sorts of trouble.

Hi guys.

I just made a book and saved it. It's the book I'm gonna load from now on, to make new Mages. It has everything a mage might want and maybe some stuff that some won't want. Still gonna be less of a hassle to remove some of that stuff, instead of adding all of it.

Neat little number: If I use it as it is, so far, with a Forcemaster as an example mage, I'm at 85 SBP. A Warlord would be at a whopping 100.

Mage

Attack
2x Acid Ball

Conjuration
2x Mana Flower
1x Pillar of Righteous Flame
2x Tanglevine

Creature

Enchantment
1x Galvanize
1x Ballad of Courage
1x Chant of Rage
1x Bear Strength
1x Hawkeye
1x Nullify
1x Jinx
2x Poisoned Blood
1x Magebane
2x Regrowth
2x Brace Yourself
1x Rhino Hide

Equipment
1x Leather Chausses
1x Leather Boots
1x Leather Gloves
1x Mage Wand
1x Mage Staff

Incantation
3x Dissolve
2x Teleport
1x Purify
1x Force Push
3x Seeking Dispel
1x Remove Curse
3x Dispel

So I ain't really sure if there's a lot to discuss here, but if something strikes you as odd or something's in there that you'd do vastly different, hit me with it :)

You might want to add the option of transferring demonic link to an attacking mage with the demonic mask.

Spells / Re: Hydra regeneration as a zombie
« on: June 12, 2018, 04:56:12 AM »
Yes, the hydra still has regeneration.
Regeneration is treated as healing though.
And healing can only be applied to living objects.
This is also the reason why Dorseus can't heal zombies.

You're slightly wrong on the second one.
Neither the fast nor the slow are removed. Tge creature will have both traits. They effectively cancel each other out, but you don't lose a trait until it is specifically mentioned anywhere (Swamp/ZombieFrenzy/Victorian Griffin)

I'm running into somewhat of a problem:
My situation is that I was going to move into a new flat, together with a friend.
The "previous" occupant theoretically doesn't have a contract any more and we're supposed to move in next week. He refuses to leave tho.
That said, with the uncertain situation at hand, I haven't made any internet contracts yet, because I wanted to avoid paying when I can't even move in yet.
All that meaning: I might not have Internet at home for the next three of four weeks.
(it's a win-lose situation. I either get lucky and move in, but bad luck no internet, or get unlucky, have to stay at my parents', but get to keep using their internet)

At everyone in my group: I got the next eight to nine hours to play, as well as tomorrow evening and Tuesday all day. Would be nice if I could minimize the risk of missing any games by playing any time during that.

TL:DR
I don't know if I can play during the next month. I really don't want to drop out though. Can probably play this week, certainly during today and the following two days (except work hours tomorrow. European, 7 to 4 job)

I've been writing (or rather not writing...) a fantasy story for like 9 years now, continuously scrapping versions, rewriting stuff, losing interest, coming back to it and rewriting it again.

Through all this time, the pivotal character in the story has been Sir Jason Crage. Or rather, with how the story has transformed, Lord Jason Crage.

And that's just it. I fell in love with my own creation. The name just suddenly popped up in my head when I first started writing and I've been using it on the interwebs ever since. If you ever encounter that name: That's me.

Or, if you encounter it in the far far, very far future, it might just mean that I've finally released the damn book and got fans now.

How do you prevent the golem from dying?
I'd love to use him in my Dwarf, but I always find the iron golems to be much more durable and effective because the magmas keep dying :(
