ADMW Open
Standards
- The tournament will be played in two stages. The first stage will be a round robin. There will be 16 total players separated into 4 groups. The top two players in each group will advance to the second stage. Each player must play at least 1 game every week. Extensions will only be granted on a case by case basis. The tournament will begin March 25th. Once all players complete a round of matches, the next week will begin.
- A tie break looks at the match record between tied participants. For example, if Katherine and Dave are tied based on statistics but Katherine won when they played during the tournament, Katherine wins the tie break. When more than 2 participants are tied, they're ranked by the number of wins each one had against the others.
The second stage will be a single elimination tournament. The date to begin will be determined after the first stage is completed.
- All cards from Beastmaster vs Wizard Academy and all sets prior are legal to use. All promotional cards available on OCTGN are also legal.
- Players will build a spellbook with the standard amount of spellbook points and restrictions.
Restrictions
- Wizard
Arcane Zap no longer has ethereal - Promo
Ballista is considered Unique and Warlord Only
Rules
If a player gets disconnected and dropped during a tournament match it will be considered a loss for that player
A judge makes the final call on a rule. Any argumentative discussion that takes an excessive amount of time will receive a warning then if it continues that player will be disqualified.
The Upkeep phase must be completed as quickly as possible. You are not allowed to delay Upkeep due to planning.
***Clarification***
Upkeep will have a time limit of 3 minutes. All optional abilities (lifelink, voltaric shield, etc.) must be decided in this phase. You are not allowed to reverse these effects once upkeep phase has finished.
Planning phases will be timed. You are allowed 5 minutes (300 seconds) at the start of the planning phase using the in game timer. Judges will regulate the timer - If there is no judge you can agree to not time the match
During both the first and last quick cast and the main action phase - Players will be limited to 1 minute to decide each action. Executing an action will not be timed. Judges will regulate the timer - If there is no judge you can agree to not time the match.
Only games from the second stage are required for judges. You and your opponent may both agree to play a game without a judge. If one player wishes to have a judge then the game must be put on hold until a time can be arranged for all parties involved. After the game both players must submit the results.
Become a Participant
To enter this tournament please email your user name to Arcaneduels@gmail.com
There are only 16 slots available so sign up today! Any player can sign up for the tournament after the slots are full and be on a standby list.
There will be no spellbook submissions. You are restricted to only using a mage once. For example if you play the Wizard round 1 - you will not be allowed to play the Wizard for the rest of the tournament. The Wizard can only be chosen once, changing the minor school will not be considered a different mage.
Competitors will be randomized at the beginning of the tournament to determine which group they are in. Until the tournament officially begins you will not know who you first opponent will be.
Other info
If you wish to be a caster please contact me at Arcaneduels@gmail.com. Even if you cannot stream you could always join me or anyone else casting the game. Players are allowed to cast for games that they are not competing in.
Judge positions will be less easy to apply for. If you wish to be a judge then you will not be allowed to participate as a contestant in the tournament.
Matches must allow official commentators and judges in as spectators. A list of spectators will be posted on this forum page one post below. Some games will be streamed live, and may be posted on youtube for all Mage Wars fans to view.

I have two questions,
will Arcane Duels cover it?
who is Katherine and Dave? :)
-
Hey Boocheck!
Good questions :D
This is an official Arcane Duels tournament. We will be covering as much as we can! There may be some games in the round robin that go without AD being there (and it is allowed). Also Schwen may also be covering a few games.
I could write a novel on Katherine and Dave 8)
-
I'm officially renaming this to the ADMW Throwdown.
Coshade, make it so! 8)
-
It will certainly be a throwdown :D
-
What does the AD stand for?
-

Arcane Duels
-
And what awesome prizes can players win? 8)
-
You win the right to brag about being the best Mage Wars player in the world :D
-
Aww, man! And I here I was hoping for $10, 000 ::)
-
You receive the "Number One"- Headband! ;D (and you have to wear it all the time!!!)
-
You receive a wonder magnet! Or a virtual trophy for your Octgn and/or forum profile! At least I hope you do...
-
Are pants legal? According to the latest Arena rules and codex there's no slot to cast them.
-
Yes, you are allowed to wear pants in this tournament.
-
Will the times of the matches be announced so we can spectate?
-
when is it?
-
Yes, you are allowed to wear pants in this tournament.
And me with only my Kilt :(

Why is arcane zap not ethereal?

Why is arcane zap not ethereal?
My guess would be to try and make the wizard more balanced with the rest of the mages.

I imagine it's because they ate experimenting on ways to make the wizard less OP. I would have preferred an epic tag on wizard tower but it's a good idea

it is less of a problem with a only once chose wizard, and finally this could result in having more incorporeal cards around

go go invisible stalker!

You know it :P I went to Las Angeles and came back with it.

Maybe someone can help me. I am looking for two players in my group:
Wstrząśnięty, and
Thedude44
Either there is something I am missing of the "search for users" tool or their nicknames for the tourney do not correspond to their user in the forum.
Can anyone help me to contact them?
Thanks in advance.

I'll go ahead an contact you about email addresses to contact people by Arxciducs. I'll setup an edit on the front of the thread with everyone's profile for the forums that I can find (you can PM them through there.)

Powlich V Sharkbait, Saturday at 1500 UTC (1000 Central US).
I'm planning on at least recording the match, so it should get posted some time after.
If any of the other casters are interested in casting/recording this match, let me know and we'll keep you in the loop on the match.
-
So first round a bye for me does that mean I have one mage more or less ? just need to know If I should count one out.guessing one won't be used since there is no game for it

No you do not have to count a mage out :D It is just a week where you do not have to play a required match, you can however player anyone in your group for the week you are assigned if you wish.
-
A couple of questions/comments...
1. What is the min/max on # of mages we need?
2. Who do we contact if we want someone to watch/judge a match?
3. I assume, but want to clarify that Priest is different than Priestess; Straywood is different than Johktari?
4. Only if both players agree that this is the official match, will it count correct? For example, I can play the other people in the tournament for fun during the tournament as well, right?
I might be back with more at some point.

1. You'll need at least 4 mages (if you lose out in the group stage.) and at most 7 mages if you are in the final match.
2. Coshade, Schwenkgott or Puddnhead for judging needs or casting and Sharkbait if you just want a caster/recorder and you are not already playing against him. :D
3. Each mage Statcard counts as a different mage. This means the only non-different mage is variations on Wizard.
4. Yes, the official match should be agreed upon ahead of time but you are not limited to only playing your opponent once. Only the agreed upon official game will count toward your tournament ranking.
Good Luck!

Hey guys!
Just wanted to let you know that I updated the front of the thread to include all the contact information. Hopefully it is easier for everyone to get a hold of their opponent and have a match!
@ DevilsVendetta --> Great questions! Everything Puddnhead posted is accurate. Please consider him as authoritative on the tournament as I am.
If you wish to get a castor or judge, please use the front of the thread to get contact information.
Also I will be posting all matches that I will be attending in Chicago time (I'll always reference it in the post).
-
Thanks, that was very helpful.
Already arranging some matches... ;)
-
Ok right out of the gate I need to say something... BAAAAAALLLLLSSSSSS!!! I am thoroughly frightened by my initial group! Mystery? Seriously?! Biblofilter? Come Ahhhhhhhnnnnnn! Lol! It's gonna be a lot of fun getting decimated by all of you and I expect to learn a greatdeal about the game andb different play styles, but for crying out loud I don't think I could have ended up in a more dangerous group! Best of luck to all you brave mage warriors! Most importantly have fun, its a good thing I'm not a sore loser though lol! I'm so stoked, this is gonna be awesome!
-
I'm excited about this tournament because it will be larger than the last thunderdome while featuring some of the same players.
If you need a judge or want your game to be recorded and commentated, i am happy to do it. I'm available around 5 p.m. - 10 p.m. german time during the week. On weekends i will be available whenever you want ;)
Just write me some days before your match is gonna take place.
-
DevilsVendetta vs. Biblofilter.
Saturday at approximately 10:30 AM Arcane Duels time.
Great if anyone want to record/comment etc., but as our starting point isn't set in stone im not going to ask anyone directly.
I'm going to be online a lot before that and would be more than happy to catch a few games before the battle vs. DevilsVendetta.
-
I will also like to get a game or two in sometime tomorrow afternoon/evening.
-
who's thedude44? ???
-
Me and Frozen will have our game on Tuesday 24:00 CET, 17:00 US Chicago time.

Tournament report:
Thanks to easter holidays and the time troubles that arose Rinc played the dreaded facemelter (credits to Schwenkgott).
P00pstar played the "dreaded" orc warlord (credits to himself I think!).
Rinc started the game with battleforge and mana crystal while P started the game with barracks and construction yard, keeping Rinc guessing as to what exactly his game plan was.
Rinc came out of the gates exploding after that point on. Ring of curses, followed by hawkeye and Akiros favor, while P let his first in a line of many goblin grunts enter the table.
While Rinc kept on pushing on the enchantment side with both Adramelechs touch and marked to death, P kept on summoning grunts from the barracks. P added a battle forge to his "factory like" part of the game board.
And this is where the fun begins. Rinc starts throwing fireballs coupled with flameblasts for 8+ dice. P seemed to have no high armour in the book, just dropping pants and boots. He started to retaliate with the grunts and at the same time putting up an earth wall between him and Rinc who was now alone with the grunts.
The following round saw eagle claw boots from battleforge coming down, followed by a climb up that really scary earth wall and throwing a flameblast in the head of P.
Each round they traded blows, one harder than another. To add insult to injury the burn tokens of Rinc damaged P severely.
When the last round was up, Rinc had taken 25 damage, with 33 life total standing in the same room as P.
P on the other hand had taken 28 damage and had 36 life total.
It was dead equal now but P had the initiative and decided to quick cast hurl boulder, making it 6 damage which left Rinc with only 2 life left. Rinc had a hard time deciding between flameblast or devils trident with P having 1 face down enchantment and 5 armour. The choice fell on trident, taking a chance that P had no block or reverse magic and going for the piercing 2. And he rolled..... .... ... 3 normal (armour absorbed it all) and 7 critical damage, leaving P at 1 single point of life and the winner after his full action went into beating Rincs head in.
P00pstar 1 - 0 Rinc
Congratulations P00pstar.
-
Thanks for the game rinc!
-
Powlich used a Straywood Beastmaster to pummel Sharkbait's poor Bloodwave Warlord :P. Powlich really swung the match when his tegu started to eat everything from conjurations to every creature Sharkbait had for a while. Video to be posted in a bit.
Well played Powlich!
Video here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgf0eUiuzc8) and Arcane Duels will upload in a bit as well

What a fun match!
Both mages were in front of their own death as the last turn initiated. Leggyblonde´s Anvil Warlord cast a great boulder that left Arxiduc´s malakai priest incapacitated on the floor. He was immediately smashed by the huge hammer of the Dwarf Kriegshammer leaving the priest with only one life left. The priest stood up feeling dazed and replied with a swing against the mage which he completely missed. With his immediate quick action he cast a boulder and with very lucky rolling managed to take down the Dwarf Mage before the rest of the soldiers would annihilate him.
Result: Priest (Arx), barely survived the Anvil throne warlord (LeggyBlonde)
Thanks to Leggyblonde for such a fun match! A player with very good vibe and an example of sportsmanship.
-
No time to do a long writeup but Biblo's Johktari Beastmaster with help from a devastating Steelclaw and a very annoying Wolf Spider killed my Priest and his angels who couldn't roll a good die to save anything.
-
If anyone else is looking for Wstrząśnięty then that's me. I was busy this week with Easter preparations (btw Happy Easter to everyone here that celebrate it :) ). I'm responding to the messages now.
-
RomeoXero and I are playing our match on Tuesday night atouts 9:30 pm eastern time (0830 Chicago time). If someone wants to cast or spectate our game, feel free to join us!
-
Johktari beastmaster played by Werekingdom easily snuffed out the life of priest of Malakai played by Rinc.
Thats congratulations number two from me!
Werekingdom 1 - 0 Rinc.
-
Group B - rant (p00pstar on OCTGN) v Sharkbait
Scheduled for Sat. 2 April at 1000 Central US timezone (Arcane Duels time, UTC - 5, pick your notation). I'll probably record the match like I did with my previous one unless we get another caster that wants to live stream it.
-
Just letting you guys know I will update the current standings and release all of the videos this (and every week from) Wednesday! We've had a lot of amazing matches so far!
-
Should we just go on and arrange/play more matches or should we wait for other matches in our group to finish.
Any particular order the matches should be played in?
I'm in favor of just play as many matches as possible as fast as possible, but I do think there's an advantage in waiting.
-
Hey Biblo nice questions!
You guys are more then welcome to play more matches then the scheduled ones. I'm trying to give out suggested matches so we have at least 1 game a week for everyone. You could theoretically play all your matches today if everyone had time (for round robin)! Just make sure you both agree that the match you play will be the official match. If you could just email me with the mage you used and who won afterwards it would help me record everything for when I update. Also I would prefer if everyone posted the times of matches on this forum, just for commentators to know ahead of time to join the game for videos.
Also a lot of people have been sending me videos of their game. I highly encourage more players to do this if they can! I'm really enjoying how this tournament is going so far! I also find it interesting that we've had a lot of Johktaris and Priests.

Me and Frozen had our match today.
I played the Johktari Beastmaster and Frozen played the Straywood Beastmaster, it was the battle of the sexes!
We both played very offensive books, Frozen had initiative and start out by moving two steps towards the center and deployed a Battle Forge.
I started out by moving two steps and placing two face-down enchantments on my mage.
The next round I revealed Bear Strength and Lion Savagery and attack his Battle Forge, it survived but my quick cast Geyser killed the forge. Frozen responded by summoning a Wychwood Hound and a Steelclaw Grizzly that he made into his pet.
After that we were almost always in constant battle with a few exceptions where we went away to recover and change approach to the game.
After a very fun game to play, I came out on top. Sharkbait specced and recorded the game so if you're interested in watching the VoD check out his channel.

I just had my match against RomeoXero, that was a blast! I played the Johktari Beastmaster, and he played a zombie-happy Arraxian Crown Warlock.
The Beastmistress started by moving two spaces to the near center and popping a pair of flowers, for decorative purposes. The Warlock stayed in his corner, played a pair of mana crystals and started spawning Zombie Brutes like they were going out of style. The BM responded with two Spitting Raptors and set them on his crystals. The mage helped with Kajarah in hand, but was too scared of the three Brutes guarding the Warlock to make any kind of reckless approach. The Warlock had something else in mind... on his initiative, the BM got teleported in the pit of zombies and Tanglevine'd in place. A Teleport bound to a Mage Wand saved the Johktari from this tricky situation. In retaliation, the Brutes made short work of one of the raptors, and converted him to dark side with a Rise Again. Curseweaving ensured that this curse would get a few other uses during the match, to the Johktari's great dismay.
A Ghoul Rot, a Magebane and a Deathlock put a steady stream of unmitigable damage on the BM, while she was struggling to get creatures out (she somehow forgot how to cast a Lair). The Beastmistress fled the Warlock and his undead horrors as much as she could, in between summoning a few canines to help with the action advantage. Redclaw, a Timber Wolf and a couple of Foxes tried their best to reach the Deathlock, pumped up by Rajan's Fury, but found Walls of Bones in their way several times. They diverted their attention to the Warlock when he came by, and helped close the damage gap a bit. They all eventually fell to the various Flameblasts and heavy blows from the Zombie Brutes, while the Johktari was licking her wounds in the opposite corner of the arena, gearing up and bringing in more foxes as reinforcements. The Warlock eventually stepped too close to the heat, and got a Boulder to the face for his troubles, slamming him and dealing 10 damage. Another high-rolling Boulder during the next first quickcast phase ensured that this Warlock would never again curse or burn a poor animal.
Lessons learned : double check your spellbook to see if you haven't forgotten something important like oh say a spawnpoint for your myriad of creatures. Nullifies save lives. Rise Again is a pain in the back, and prevents your creatures from resting in peace in your discard pile where they could at least net you a nice rebate on Slavörg's mana cost.
Thanks again for the game, RomeoXero! And thanks to coshade, Puddnhead and Sharkbait who joined us to stream the game!

BigL16 and I are playing tomorrow Saturday April 2nd, 1pm UTC-4 (7pm UTC+2). Would any commentator be available for our match?
-
If anyone has the time/energy to watch my first match which was against Biblo and comment about my strategy/technique and what I could to improve. It would be much appreciated. It was only my 3rd or 4th time ever using a Priest but I play the Priestess a lot so I have a general sense of what to do. I was able to watch most of the video and listening to Coshade commentate definitely made me feel better as he was very complimentary to some of my strategy but I really would like to get better and taking any advice would be useful.

I would recommend you open a thread on your match, post your book and opening strategy and what you think you did right and wrong, then ask for comments and suggestions. Please have a thick skin, with many players English is not their first language so wording can be lets say course, it truly is meant to be helpful not hurtful. Many of these players are very good at the game.

ad_yer (Priestress) conceded vs Biblofilter (Forcemaster) in a very very long game.
I played a Spiked Anchor Forcemaster with 2 Devouring Jellies instead of Jelly+Grizzly, something I regretted in the beginning of the match.
ad-yer responded with a Heavy Bridge Troll (armor from crown of protection and enchantments), a Tele-Wand and a Temple of Lightning. I soon had to run for cover in my starting cover, but made a good and somewhat lucky recovery.
With 4 armor + Vet Belt on his mage, amazing healing/life gain and his remove condition markers ability countering my Jellies corrodes its no wonder I struggled to put any damage on him.
He did himself have problems with sufficient damage output and had he had one or two attack spells im pretty it would have been devastating for me.
Naturally I would like to add a Magebane/Poison Blood or something like that.
Or rather a fatigue Forcemaster would have done better I think.
Thanks for the game ad_yer! ;D
and thanks to the patient spectators as well.

Devilsvendetta (Priestess) vs Mystery (Jokthari) (mystery win)
My kiting/curse jokthari slowly killed the priestess, a early messenger of bim shalla could heal 4 but else poisoned blood, enchantment transfusion, arcane ward, enchanters wardstone did the rest. The priestess was playing a temple with clerics and altar of the iron guard. nice one. But probably not summoning in a few rounds to deal with the curses would have been good.
-
So another Priestess lost.
LeggyBlo0nde (Priestess) vs Wstrząśnięty (Adramelech Warlock): Wstrząśnięty won
Really close match. The Warlock was down to 1 life at one point and finished the match with almost 40 total life and around 20-24 damage. In the meantime there was cat and mouse game going on in almost whole arena.
At some point in match Akiro decided to favor the prepared and blessed me with luck. Decision to include the Helm of Fear turned out to be good.
It was way too long match for me.
Note to self: get proper sleep the night before the match, look at whole screen and trust Sike's programming skills.

Theasaris and I played on Saturday. Him playing a Bloodwave Warlord and myself playing a Straywood Beastmaster.
I was able to get out my 3 Animal Kinship totems with a Darfenne Asp, Wychwood Hound, and a Bear Strength where Theasaris went with a couple of enchanted Minotaurs. I had a couple lucky rolls early (e.g. 10 damage on 9 dice attacking vs a Minotaur) but in the end better play by Theasaris allowed him to outlast my early game and my late swarm of little creatures wasn't enough to keep me in the game. I had to forfeit a bit early, but the game was pretty much already won by Theasaris.
Congrats!
-
Sorry to miss it. Sounds like it was fun!

Seems like the games are going pretty well.

I don't have power at the moment, unless it comes back soon I'll have to reschedule the match if it's ok with mystery. Sorry everyone :(
Edit : power outage is supposed to last for three hours, which leaves me with little time to play afterwards. Unless it comes back in the next two hours, mystery has agreed to postpone our match until tomorrow, same time. Thanks for being a sport about it, mystery! Apologies to casters and spectators for that unwanted delay.

your home lost power? ok lets see if it comes back, shouldnt take extremly long i assume. I can wait for some time

Good luck and have fun~!

thanks for the nice game today with ad_yer.
Even though this tournament doesnt force you to play the weak mages as you only have maximum 7 games (so skip warlord, priest, beastmasters for example), i wanted to go for the warlord. The bloodwave one, the idea is mainly evolved around strong bridge trolls and some equipment. I was facing a wizard, very hard matchup.
And it was an earth wizard, expecting charmyna like hell builds I had to be a bit on the offense, but as my set up also takes time and the guarding iron golem is nothing to ignore, i made a very slow approach.
The game was though and not very clear, when the jelly died with a ballista shot and a warlord attack (i had ini next turn so a rock could have followed) I was slightly ahead and could pull it out.
In the end ad_yer disconnected but we agreed to leave it, prepared cards where arcane ward (for the poison blood) and dissolve (for whatever comes) from him and i had an vet belt from the forge a purify (if i get arcane warded on the pb) and a dispel (if he nullifys me). So he would have dissolved the vet belt directly (but i have another for next round), and i purify myself so arcane ward wont help. and second action i heal myself with the wand again. He will get two attacks from the orc and troll and my other two creatures keep up.
So net he would have got nothing out of that round and so on, he is just to much behind in actions, and with chitin armor, vet belt, harshforgeplate, an elemtal wand for acid ball and the action advantage it was clear.
Thanks for the game, it was close

Today Powlich (priestess) played vs. Werekingdom (Straywood Beastmaster)
Werekingdom played a lair with harmonize in his central zone. I moved to my central zone and played battle forge (for discount rings and armor mostly). Next round I played Brogan with a arcane ward face down. I realized next round that I can't cast the bear strengt i had in hand, since arcane ward also cancels my spells. So no bear strength Brogan this time... At least I had Bim-shalla to give him a total of 5 attack dice. Brogan got tanglevined, so it would take one more round before it could enter his zone with the lair.
With Brogans 5 dice, I think he rolled about 7 on average during the rest of the game. A grizzly was easilly killed with 3 strikes from Brogan. Then his mage started to taste his blade. Werekingdom cast some asps and bats from his lair, but they didn't do the work very well. I also had a Knight of westlock with bear strengt to get rid of the guarding bats, and he later assistant Brogan with the killing of the mage.
I was lucky with both the mage matchup, and with the rolls. I still hope my opponent had a good time playing the game. :)

That's a shame. I was looking forward to a challenge The Dude could be. Hope he's alright.

Thank you Coshade for inviting me to the tournament. I also have mixed feelings with this because I was hoping to see some games with the dude; but on the other hand I'm happy that I can be in the tournament now ... I really do hope the dude is fine and although I will not be able to replace him (playstrength wise) I will try to be as hard a challenge for my opponents as I can be ;)
For the records:

Mystery vs biblofilter
Mirrormage, I wanted to play with heavy enchanted tegu pet and some curses. Now I know why guarding is different in academy with all the really cheap new pests with good defenses makes guarding very fast weak now.
Biblo played well, I was curious why he didnt do anything against my armor. Really bad early rolls with fellela failing its defense 3 out of 3 times was bad. proabably should have played more of the curses earlier and get a rot with the degu on biblo. But i expected him to anyway have a purify and more dispels than three, some missjudgment their.
But the main problem was that the book with academy cards has nothing against flyers, not sure why on putting the knife in i removed the mage wand and kept the morning star. The non academy deck had it in, hm and also a falcon myself.
Anyhow it was a cool and close game: And nicely falls in line with Armor->> creatures, DOT>armor, creatures>>DOT.
-
Im playing Romeoxero right now - :)
-
I'll try and schedule my next two games soon, so if ad_yer & Romeo have some preferences, let me know.
-
I won over Romeoxero with the male Warlock over Romeoxero´s Priestess.
He surprised me a lot with a quite unusual build, and some nice/nasty ideas!
Always good when your opponent has a hard time guessing what your up 2, and you pressure him.
I managed to Seeking Dispel Divine Intervention (1/3) real quick and my Brutes did a good job, which turned the match in my favor.
-
Romeoxero played against mystery.
He used also a wizard, why are the people using a wizard against me? Thats why I then end up with the crazy curse decks like my todays BM.
The game was pretty straight forward: I started with the Adramalech warlock BF+crystall. He enchantment+krystall, then hugin and enchantment vs hawkeye leather boots and sersiryx
round 3: ring of curses, magebane on wizard and rhino hide on warlock.
The wizard casted a wizardstower and the surging wave one hitted the BF (falls in line with the 3 defense misses of fellela, a 12dmg 6 dice roll in thunderdome G...).
The next round I could get out a fireshaper ring and fit kill hugin with a flameblast. The mage bane slowly did dmg. A focused effort of the wizard killed also sersiryx rather fast, but he at least managed to also get an enfeeble on the wizard.
A quickcast 9dice fireball did only 6dmg, even though i had prepared gloves of skill. But then i realized i have not ini and a surging wave will daze me.
But as the wizard still was unprotected (apart from the voltaric shields), two flameblasts and a fireball killed him over the rounds.
mystery wins
-
Romeoxero played against mystery.
why are the people using a wizard against me?
You should take that as a compliment.
Vs. really strong players it make sense to use your best mages/spellbooks.
If I had played you in the first round, or had suffered an early loss, I would have played Wizard vs. you!
It seems like, that in a tourney format like this one, the favorite player is at a disadvantage :)

Leggy pulled out her first win! She went for it with a zombie necromancer versus GW's druid. GW partnered up with the Steelclaw Grizzly and Raptor Vine to try and deal some major damage on top of throwing out an early magebane and rust to make the necro quite vulnerable. Leggy was able to tanglevine the grizzly twice taking away the enemy's actions
The tanglevines allowed the zombie horde to swarm and overwhelm the druid. The druid was bombarded with 3 taint conditions as well as a few hurl rocks and a boulder which in the end gave leggy her win. Great game to play. loved GW's aggressiveness and strategy. Quite the competitor.

Good luck my friend. Remember a duel is lost before meeting the opponent, if it first lost within our own mind. It is better to steal yourself for battle and focus on winning for yourself; ignore the bigger picture.

Either ask uploader for video file or get some YT downloader and download matches yourself. I can't recommend any as last time I did that was few years ago.

Me and rinc had our game yesterday. My thornlasher Druid was too much for the Brogan priestess, played by Rinc. Rinc was a bit short of time, so he just tried to be very agressive. He opened with Brogan, enchant him with life link, and then use the divine intervention to teleport him over to my place. Unfortunatly, that was not threat enough for me, since the druid has so much free life regeneration going on. After some surging waves and wall pushes, it was more or less over, and he conceded.
Thank you Rinc for a very short, but quite fun game!
-
sorry i have to postpone our match my computer doesnt want to cooperate
Game will be today Wen 13.04. 18:00 UTC. Casters are welcome :)
Tyrnan's Necromancer emerged victorious from the battle against Wstrząśnięty's Bloodwave Warlord. Puddnhead recorded the match so everyone should be able to watch it in a few days.
A big thankyou to Wstrząśnięty for the fun game and also to Puddnhead for recording and judging the match.

Frozen vs BigL16 happened just now. It was a slugfest between a Malakai priest and Anvil throne warlord.
BigL opened with double battleforge, and I answered with battle forge and a mana crystal. After that we both armored up and I summoned my trusty Asyran defender as my holy avenger. We proceeded to then beat the shit out of each other, with an eventual ending! In case someone watches it later the result is below.
Frozen wins eventually, punching through toughness and defenses on the back of burns and holy avenger doing work.

Just letting everyone know I updated the standings and all mages used. If I missed anything feel free to PM me and I can update it!
Also I released another wave of VODs for anyone that wants to see some truly amazing games.

DevilsVendetta and I played our game tonight. I brought an Anvil Throne Warlord to the table to meet DevilVendetta's Fire Wizard. The Wizard quickly established a strong economical advantage with crystals and discount rings, gearing up with two battleforges; meanwhile the Warlord rushed to his center to summon a Bloodwave Greatbow and a Dwarf Panzergarde. The orc archer made short work of the first battleforge, and a Ballista eventually helped taking out the second one. The Wizard brought a Gorgon Archer to counter the threat of the Greatbow, and managed to dish out weaks left right and center, but his conjurations could not be saved. The ballista went up in flames under the attacks of the Wizard and his Tower. A Bloodcrag Minotaur and a Goblin Alchemist joined the fray to deal with the Gorgon and the Wizard's Towers, as well as a second Greatbow, perched atop an Archer's Watchtower. The Minotaur eventually succumbed to the heat of the Wizard's damage barrier, but the Wizard was struggling to find a safe zone by then, with ranged attacks coming from every direction. The Alchemists slowly corroded his high armor, then the Warlord jumped in the melee, padded with armor and wielding his trusty Forge Hammer, to deliver several heavy blows to the Wizard. This proved too much for the bearded old man, who fell to the floor after 24 rounds of intense play.
Personal thoughts/highlights :
Bloodwave Greatbow is insanely good. With the AT Warlord's battle order, he gets Piercing + 4, making him a beast against conjurations or heavily armored targets.
I had a lot of fun casting Battlefury from a Helm of Command on my opponent to pop Nullifies. It felt so wrong and yet so right at the same time...
These high armor strategies make the games last forever... This one took 4h30 to complete, and we played it pretty fast. At one point I had 9 armor on my mage, which felt pretty silly (and yet it helped against a nasty fireball).
DevilsVendetta, you're a great opponent, and I had a lot of fun in our match. Thanks again!
I'll try to post my spellbook soon.

Yeah. This confused me too. The problem with the wizard really doesn't seem to be the fact that his arcane zap is ethereal, and I've never heard anyone even mention that idea until this tournament. What's up with that?

-
Hi guys,
Quick question, does anyone know when the finals will start?
Assuming that players who still have to do 3 matches will play one match per week (as per tournament rules) then finals should start 3 weeks from now on.
-
I am now finished with the round robin.
Loss vs. ad_yer - I played a Fire Wizard
Loss vs. Romeo - I played a Forcemaster
-
Ok folks, sorry ive waited till the end to get this report out but i guess life got in the way. alright lets recap.
Vs. Ad-yer i played a zombie warlock, and although i did decently in the early game, my late game reluctance to press an advantage lost me the game in the end. and rightfully so! never forget to go for the kill. thats how you win after all! very well played on both sides (till i blew it that is lol!)!
result the large flying boulders of ad yer crushed the life from my AC warlock, leaving his undead minions to pick his corpse clean
Vs. Biblofilter I played a borderline rediculous priestess book that lost like a champ but made me think about the build even more. it was incredibly fun and Biblofilter is a gentleman, scholar and incredible sportsman. A decent start had me summoning malacoda (yeah i know...) and placing a stack of enchantments face down on myself. blah blah blah enchantment transfusion a bunch of enchantments. an awe inspiring seeking dispel catches my divine intervention and i lose a ton of tempo. i keep up a decent performance but the AC warlock he played (that was very similar to the one i played against ad yer.) burnt and plasted the life from my poor priestess, who was only trying her hand at this dammage over time thing shes heard so much about.
result. Biblofilter vastly outplayed my odd book, and claimed the victory after a great match! the lesson here was all about tempo gain. gotta keep your head on your shoulders when your trying to play the action game. Phenomenal game!
Vs Mastermystery I was very intimidated by this upcoming match, hard on the heels of my epic loss to biblofilter as it was. I decided to use a wizard book whos original intention was damage over time. i decided to change strategies and run an attack tower. Even though a beautiful roll took out mysterys battleforge in one shot, not even that tempo gain and the destruction of Serseryix was able to stave off the eventual firey ashy death that quickly flew my way.
Result. i was again vastly outplayed, but i thoroughly enjoyed my match. i dont often play a wizard, nor do i often face an adramelech warlock, but it was a very informative loss.
Vs Devilsvendetta I chose to bring a nature mage to the fray this time, as both myself and my opponent were fighting for the covetted 0 for 4 slot! so much pressure abound. My druid started the match by planting a vine tree after donning a leaf ring. the forcemaster accross the arena dropped a mana crystal and a battleforge. i followed in the next few rounds with extra vine markers from the tree each round, casting fellela, and planting a flower. what followed was a steady stream of tanglevines off the tree that just barely managed to keep the forcemaster locked down for a while. the FM countered with 3 thoughtspores that my druid promptly threw huge and slightly less huge rocks at aggessively, luckily killing them.
results. after losing all my creatures and him having an invisible stalker, on the hunt for me, my long term ghoul rots and mage bane caught up to the FM and she became delerious and her own servant tore her apart with its nasty invisible claws. Thanks to Vendetta for a Great game! i know the Druid is frustrating and he bore it like a champ! awesome game
End result 1 for 3. not horrible!

Match for Group C, Round 3, leggybl0nde vs Tyrnan is scheduled for Sunday 17th of April 14:00 UTC. Casters welcome :)
Due to a spontaneous software update of my windows 7 system (without any notice whatsoever ...) I disconnected during planning phase of turn 3.
According to the rules this counts as a loss for me.
I used my Adramalech Warlock, leggybl0nde used the druid.
Would have been a fun match .. I'm sorry we couldn't play it to the end :(
-
So me and BigL16 played our match.
Setup is Adramalech Warlock(me) VS Blodwave Warlord(Big)
It starts of by the Warlord putting out some barracks and a archer tower. The warlock responds with a summoning circle though hidden from the sight of the warlord.
The very next turn the warlock springs in to action revealing the summoning circle and summon a magma golem. the warlord flees in terror and steps back to his original corner position.
The next turn involes the warlord running forward past the golem charging towards the warlock. The warlock now needs to slow down the charging orc before its to late.
Curse after curse the darkness flows towards the warlord and he is trapped with a enfeeble and force hold. Taking damage from a ghoul rot.
The golem has now stacked up some burns of molten lava on him and is ready to engage and what a glorius engagement it was. the warlord made the mistake of trapping himself with the beast with earthwalls thinking he would have the chance to climb over with the boots he just equipped but no. the beast had struck twice and the warlord bruised and burning could not escape death. He barly made it outside his own walls and then the rot and burn got to him. He was finnished.
I Molrid champion of flame and dark won the match without taking a single point of damage :)
Fun game though :P
Next match tomorrow, see you then Thesaris.
-
Match against Molrid is coming up in ~1 hour. Any castors available?

I'm planning to be there at 2pm Arcane Duels time (1900 utc). Is this still correct?

Rinc vs Sharkbait.
Rinc entered arena with the forcemaster. Sharkbait used his necromancer.
Even though Rinc got off to a very heavy economy start (15 channeling) without any pressure at all from Sharkbait, he could not transform that into enough lasting power to beat Sharkbait.
Winner, Sharkbait.
Sharkbait 1 - 0 Rinc.
-
If anyone else has finished from other groups, but wants to get in some other games...hit me up here or on OCTGN and I'd love to play more people.
-
Final match me vs drefan. Drefan won
Necro vs beastmaster
I acually don't have the energy to type an enire story but then again it basicly went. enchant enchant enchant on the beastmaster. = dead necro :P
So I should be at standing 2:2 win vs theasaris and win vs bigl16
Loss vs drefan and frozen
-
Can someone report in my win vs BigL16 in the brackets?
-
Hey there,
I'll be doing an update today! We've had some awesome games this week
-
Oh and yeah the mages I have used are blodwave warlord, adramalech warlock forcemaster and necromancer, since I saw that it wasn't typed in :)
-
GW vs Tyrnan : Saturday 23rd April 21:00 my time (1900 GMT; 1500 EDT)
Just a short reminder that the game takes place tonight :D ... see you in the arena!
-
Tyrnan's Beastmaster was subdued by the divine might of gw's priestess. Protected by 4 knights and two angels his creatures couldn't harm her ....
-
Good game. The 12 rounds took a while but it was honest creature bashing over board control :)
Swarmy Beastmaster with some biggies is quite scary I have to admit.
In the end Samandriel convinced the Beastmaster it was time to leave the arena.
Group stage ends for me:
gw vs. ...
...arxiducs (J. Beastmistress) : played (Priest) / won
...kaarin/Wstrząśnięty (Arax. Warlock) : played (S. Beastmaster) / won
...leggyblonde (Necromancer) : played (Druid) / lost
...Tyrnan (S. Beastmaster) : played (Priestess) / won
-
Last match for Group C Tyrnan vs. Arxiducs will start Fr. 29.04. 2016 at 15:30 UTC. Someone to judge the match would be fine, since we plan to use the timers to keep the duration of the match at under 2 hours :). Would be even greater if someone could record/cast it 8). See you in the Arena!
-
I will do my best to be available. Depending on the speed of the game I may have to miss the back half of it, but I'll cut it to size when we do the commentary.
-
yay! arrived home just in time :)

Tyrnan's Anvil Throne Warlord smashed arxiduc's Warlock to the arena ground in the end. After having drained his soul twice in round 4 and from then on trying to go out of the way of the warlock while at the same time chasing him with two Minotaurs. Some walls helped him to recover from his wounds to then finally throw a boulder on the warlock that smashed him into the ground. :D
It was a very close game and only luck helped me win this. I had lot's of fun. Thanks to arxiducs for this fun and completely unconventional game :)

How is the tiebreak working out in group C?
While I'm at it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonneborn-Berger_score (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonneborn-Berger_score) might work out if there's still a draw. (for future tournaments)
-
I've been asking me that myself. Looking at the tables it seems that Wstrząśnięty, leggybl0nde and Tyrnan are tied on every value there. Especially the tiebreaker described in the tournament rules is a draw too (everyone of us three won one game against another one of us). How come that I am on rank 2 now?
Not that I want to complain. I'd really love to play in the second stage of the tournament but I want to understand why.
-
Hey guys!
I'll have all the updates Monday. I'm at a convention for the week. Off the top of my head, I know challonge automatically calculates values of who lost to who to determine tie breaks. If there's an issue I'll contact you all Monday! Looking forward to starting the second stage!
-
Normally it would be small points (life left or damage inflicted), but I don't think anyone was taking them down.
While I'm at it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonneborn-Berger_score (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonneborn-Berger_score) might work out if there's still a draw. (for future tournaments)
Using this:
GW has most wins so victory against him will give the most points.
Arxiducs has least wins so victory against him will give the least points.
Tyrnan won against Arxiducs and one middle score player.
LeggyBl0nde won against GW and one middle score player.
Wstrząśnięty won against Arxiducs and one middle score player.
This would mean that LeggyBl0nde advances.

Hey remember were not using this in this tournament :P
-
My thoughts are a number of different tie breakers as in chess or MTG:
1) Strength of schedule
2) The result of the direct encounter(s) between the players (if any)
3) Greater number of wins
4) Just-Burg Scoring
To calculate this, sum the running score for each round. For example, if a player has (in order) a win, loss, win, draw, and a loss; his round-by-round score will be 1, 1, 2, 2½, 2½. The sum of these numbers is 9. This system places more weight on games won in the early rounds and the least weight on games won in the final rounds. The rationale for this system is that a player who scored well early in the tournament has most likely faced tougher opponents in later rounds and should therefore be favoured over a player who scored poorly in the start before subsequently scoring points against weaker opponents.
5) Sonneborn-Berger (linked before)
6) Greatest number of wins against a Wizard
-
1) what you mean with strength of schedule
2) they are tied
3) they are tied
4) makes no sense if everyone played everyone in agroup
5) Like most
6) not sure
-
Still there is the need to come up with sth. to get a clear situation.
1. drawing lots
2. Sonneborn Berger (discussed above) makes most sense if you need a non-random decision asap.
3. If one player doesn't have an interest to leave group stage one might also have a decider match between the other two (only allowing mages already played for example).
4. very time consuming options
Hey remember were not using this in this tournament :P
-
or a quiz like thunderdome G had the option :D
-
Or a game of Domination
-
problem with extra games are like now when you have 3 people tied, you need 3 matches and still have a good chance of a new draw
-
problem with extra games are like now when you have 3 people tied, you need 3 matches and still have a good chance of a new draw
That's why I proposed Domination. It can be 3p game with a single winner.

in this case yes, but it can also happen that 3 players will be tied for 2 places, than two can just agree this is the strongest so get that one out as they dont want the stronger one in final stage.
I feel the tourneys should get a general tiebreaker decission
-
Strength of Schedule is a measurement of the difficulty a player had getting through the tournament that is based on the win-loss records of their opponents. If one player played opponents that recorded a larger number of wins than another would be considered to have a stronger strength of schedule.

Alright guys! I have updated the standings!
I looked over all the data and determined LeggyBlonde will be advancing to the next stage. At this point forward I wish everyone luck in the next stage! A reminder is that in this stage you will need a judge to be there for the game (see the front of this thread to find judges). Also this will be formal games so the matches will be timed and all other rules will be in place and enforced more officially. The next stage is single round elimination so good luck to everyone. I am really look forward to seeing some amazing players in the arena!

Was not expecting to make it to the next round!! Very grateful to have the opportunity to play round 2 against biblofilter and test out another mage. Everyone in my group was a blast to play with and performed well. Look forward to seeing them again in the arena. I have learned quite a bit from these games so thanks.

of course the rules are set, but 5minutes planning is quite long, but in upkeep you will have troubles as it has to be gone fast over it. But there are decissions like voltaric shield, and upkeep payments done there
In all games people decide on that in planning, but it is in upkeep. I want to know what you do about it. (same with lifebond stuff). I honestly would find it quite bad if i have to stress on that decission and then have 4 out of 5minutes to sit around doing nothing.
the main point about those things happening in upkeep is that the will influence the other players planning maybe

If the planning phase ends before 5 minutes, then we stop the timer. and move to the next phase This tournament is meant to be fast paced and reward players that can play within it. The upkeep rule is stressed to be done as quick as possible to help facilitate those faster decisions and help both players move forward in the game.

Leggybl0nde vs. Biblofilter on for Friday evening 6pm EST - that is if we get a judge/caster.
btw is there any more videos coming?
I'm especially interested in the matches Leggybl0nde has played ;)
-
***UPDATE****
After a number of private conversations with a few players, I have decided to be a bit more specific on what the upkeep phase rule implies. For the purpose of this tournament going forward, the upkeep phase must be completed within 3 minutes (if finished earlier move onto planning and proceed as normal). All optional upkeep abilities (Voltaric Shield, Treebond etc.) must be completed in this time and cannot be reversed during planning.

Seriously, I'd need a healthy dose of caffeine at that time. I mean, who in their right mind is up by 12:00 on a Saturday?! :o And that would be 11:00 here! Crikey!! ;)

If it's 1900 local time for them, pretty sure that means Sat at 1200 for us. But I'll have caffeine regardless :P
Seriously, I'd need a healthy dose of caffeine at that time. I mean, who in their right mind is up by 12:00 on a Saturday?! :o And that would be 11:00 here! Crikey!! ;)

Started watching the championship match. I realized that if Powlich had used knockdown and fireball on fellela instead of attacking the tanglevine, he might have actually killed it before it could do anything at all!
Since he had fireshaper ring on him, fireball would do 7 dice. fellela's enchantment is pretty much certain to be gator toughness, so 7 dice -1 armor is 6 damage on average, plus about 1.5 damage on average from the burn. Even if fellela survived that attack, she would be almost dead and probably would only get off one enchant. And if he had decided to curse her first, then it would be 8 dice and chance of burn against 8 life and 1 armor.

knockdown is a very situational card and therefor I would not waste two spellpoints on it. 2 Flameblast are more dice then knockdown-fireball and 2 points less, can hardly see that happen. reason flameblast is the card anyway against familiars. He also had deciceded for the flameblast with the elemental wand and was tanglevined.
And your probably certain gator is a rhino hide :o, and fellela had a bull endurance prepared, but I missplanned lacking the ench wardstone. So of course the fireball will still deal 4dmg on avg vs 6life/rhino, but he would have to invest more and with ET I can save my investments in fellela.
