Is there much interest for this in the UK?
I've picked it up and played about a half dozen games so far and interested in more but my regular opponent is not a fan.
Am interested from both a casual play and a tournament perspective. I am based in Nottingham and quite happy to run a tournament up here, and if there is interest could run events (and demo the game if you are reading this and potentially interested!) at Baycon and the Games Expo.
It would also be good to hear about whether those outside of the US can pick up the organised play packs. Over here we are generally more about gaming clubs rather than stores and it would be good to be able to get the same support.
-
Hiya,
Very much interested in the UK scene especially if it takes off and some tourneys get off the ground. Not sure how well the game would lend itself to tourney play mind you....
I'm in Winchester, Hampshire and am planning to go to the Brum Games Expo so might catch you there if nothing else.

...but my regular opponent is not a fan....
Pfft, what's that all about :)
I'm UK based (Bedfordshire) and am definitely interested. Game is gathering pace in this area too, or would be if anyone could actually find it to buy.
I plan to go to the UK Games Expo in Birmingham too, so perhaps I'll see you there.

Hi
I had posted up before christmas, had missed two replies when I was on holiday.
I am in Nottingham and eager for some games! Certainly pretty easy getting down to Leicester.
Cheers
Richard
-
I got my copy yesterday. Perhaps we could hook up next weekend. I'm happy to travel to Notts
-
Anybody else?
-
All the way down in sunny Winchester here so a bit far to meet up.
I thought I'd throw into the UK players thread though in case there's anyone near me.

-
Hi Preacher
Good idea
Hopefully we can generate a list of UK players so people can hook up
List started on my first post
-
I've got a copy winging its way to me from Amazon... I live in London and would love to meet up for casual play (at first at least!)
-
Hello fellow UKians.
From Cambridge here.
I play and demo at my local gaming store.
-
Ooo Cambridge - we're getting closer :)
for the record, there are 5 of us down here that play, so we have a decent play group. I'm always trying to subvert more too. If we were to organise a tournament, who'd be willing to travel to the Bedfordshire area?
-
Potentially two players but we both play minis tournaments so not always available. Hopefully will be at the Games Expo but may be playing Warmachine the whole weekend.

Sorry, couldn't resist!

Hi!I just bought this, trying to learn of the rules and strategies.
I live in Bristol, and would love to meet players.
-
I'm down in Sunny devon. Live in Cullompton, game mainly in Exeter.
-
So if I was to organise a tournament up in Nottingham or Mansfield how much interest would there be?
-
Me :)
-
A little too far away for me,too bad.
-
Same here, a looooong way to go from Winchester.
-
Hello fellow UKians.
From Cambridge here.
I play and demo at my local gaming store.
Which local gaming store might that be? I'm around Herts. / Essex / Cambs. myself.
-
Hi everyone,
I live in Bristol and would love to arrange a game with somebody. This game is awesome! Please get in touch and let me know if you are interested in meeting up and playing. Getting places is not a problem for me.
Kind regards,
Nostromo - Bristol
-
Perhaps we could make it all worth everyone's while by holding a tournament? Perhaps a south/south west thing. I'm more than happy to travel if it gets me a game.
Is anyone interested? Bristol is my locale, but I'm sure something could be arranged to meet the needs of non London based southerners.

Hey Guys,
Another Nottingham player here!
I'm a Student and with my Summer break rolling around I'm looking to start a regular Mage Wars meet-up on Saturdays at Chimera, in Beeston - casual games and maybe a tournament format if we can get enough people interested and turning up.
I'll be there with a handful of friends this Saturday (May 25th) from around 1pm, bit late notice I know, but if you can make it then send me a message and pop by!
Wyrm.
-
Great to aee another Nottingham player, but I am at the Games Expo this weekend :(
-
Who would have guessed that Bristol would be the epi centre of UK Mage Wars!?
-
Hello, I'm based in north London and am keen to meet up for a game with anyone in the London area.
-
Hi I am a new player in East Yorkshire... anyone around here?
-

This weekend, Friday night, Saturday all day, I will be at the Beer, Boardgames and Bellylaughs Con in Southend at the Skylark Hotel.
I will be bringing Mage Wars.
All welcome!
-
Hi everyone, three players here in Manchester if anyone is looking for a game.
-
Hey all, have just got my copy and keen to play. I live in newport pagnell (near Milton Keynes), happy to travel a bit for games.
-
I attended the BBBCon at Southend last weekend. Imagine my surprise to see five sets of Mage Wars!
-
Hay there
Another simple UK player here all the way from bradford (although not sure thats a positive )
If this managed to make enough interest in the uk I would jump on it I fecking love every aspect of it just ashame there isnt any proper game shops that has room for tables for this, cos if they did it would just sell it self
but yea I would be up for a game expo/tourn in nottingham :P
be interesting to see how my lock build stands up aginst other people other then thoes ive tought how to play
-
Hello all
First west yorkshire (bradford) player present :P
-
Hey Rithe and other UK gamers. Try out OCTGN as an online route to play Mage Wars. Same time zone = fun.
-
Hi guys,
There's a small group of us in SE Kent that have recently discovered, and subsequently become fanatical about, this fantastic game. We're pretty casual gamers, but fiercely competitive with each other and would love to meet others interested in the game.
I also have family in Mansfield, so will probably find myself in the area on occasion, probably only for two or three weeks of the year though.
-
Hi
There are 7 of us playing MW here in Brighton and growing in number. Friendly, GSOH, enthusiastic, WLTM similar. Oh, wrong forum.
Seriously, we really should organise a London pub games day as most can get there easily?
Will help with any costs but too busy to organise, sorry.
Hope something good happens out of this.
-
Hi everyone,
I am a new Mage Wars player from Bristol. Always happy to play so please get in touch.
Rafal
-
I am new to Mage Wars and i live in London.
I am looking for people to play with, are there any people who would like to organize something? :)
-
Great idea! Is that an offer? Upstairs in a London pub seems an ideal venue as all transport links to London.
I am sure that, given fair warning, a few of us Brighton players would come.
The problem with UK games players (in lots of games hobbies) is that we're not particularly keen organisers...
-
I don't mind organizing something.
How many people would be seriously interested in a session in central london?
If it's a small amount, i can think of somewhere very easily, if a lot of people show interest, we'll have to think of a suitable venue...
-
Definitely me, up to 4 depending on availability.
-
Ok, shall we organise something in November or December? :-)
-
Yes yes yes
I so need my Mage Wars fix now that it has died down locally (typical, I was last in that group to learn it)
I'm even considering learning that online interface
ARE THERE ANY OTHER UK PLATYERS WHO FANCY MEETING UP TO PLAY IN LONDON NEXT MONTH OR SO?
-
So, are there any dates that are bad for you?
How about nearer the end of november?
-
I have created an open group on FB to help to find more people who play Mage Wars in the UK. Please join and encourage others. There is soooo few people that play this game!!!
https://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#!/groups/205463822966912/
-
So, are there any dates that are bad for you?
How about nearer the end of november?
I would be willing to come over to London for a couple of games. It's a bit of a journey so it would be good to arrange games with specific players in advance. I can do any weekend in November apart from 23-24.
-
I would definitely be keen for a Central London day session in the next few months. I live in Milton Keynes if anyone is around that area for games!
-
Hello to
jk_selwyn (London)
Rafa1980 (Bristol)
Grubbamatic (London)
Deckbuilder (Brighton)
Anyone else active on the Forum from the UK want to meet up for face to face?
Fentum? (somewhere in Essex?) Or have we lost you to OCTGN?
I can't do 16th weekend and Rafa can't do 23rd
So how about we DEFINITELY BOOK Saturday 30th November?
Finding a pub with an upstairs is tricky
I suggest somewhere in the City which is dead at weekends?
I think there is a London Games Club that meets in the City on weekends
I could research or a local could investigate?
My Magic Club used to meet upstairs in the Florence Nightingale near Waterloo...
We need some logistics options like...
(a) attendance - who is interested
(b) date - availability
(c) venue - where is best for all
Let's get this ball rolling?
If we say the 30th, we have over a month to investigate
And we should all have the new set by then in the UK so should be itching to try out our new builds.
So 30th provisional?
-
Sorry for not replying sooner. I am free on the 30th.
If you are thinking of the board game group London on Board, two player games aren't encouraged due to the fact they take up a lot of space, the pub is quite small.
However I have gone to a smaller board game group at the Mad Hatter in Waterloo that is always empty, I was hoping this would be available / suitable for everyone.
I'm glad this is getting some interest, hopefully I'll be. catching you all soon :-)
-
Hello - I'd be up for something arranged for the 30th in London also. ;D
-
Seems like an age since we played Magewars but loved it when it came out. Will be dipping back into it this month. Me (Chepstow/Bristol) and martyn (Taunton) would prefer to play closer to home but are not against travelling maybe 50 miles or so.
We both enjoy the game for its fun. Dont over think it and definitly dont want to play it uber competitively.
If it is any good to anyone then get in touch. owen8475@gmail.com
-
Apologies, I don't think I will be able to come over on the 30th. @mumbojumbo - please take my place ;-)
-
Fentum? (somewhere in Essex?) Or have we lost you to OCTGN?
I'm afraid you hit the nail on the head there. Best of luck though. Well done for sorting it out.
-
@jk_selwyn
@grubbamatic
@mumbojumbo
So are the 4 of us committed to meeting at The Mad Hatter, Waterloo Market (I know it, played games there) on the 30th?
So we have a date and a venue. What about format? How long do people want to commit? If we have time, we could do a 3 round round robin? Something like "play 3 different mages, swap cards between books allowed"?
Nothing too competitive as Reef3 said. I am open to other suggestions but it would be nice to test out and face different builds. 90 minute games, that would be 5 hours of Mage Wars including handovers and moving cards between books. And switching books also gets round scouting.
Anyone else interested? If there are odd numbers, I can drop out and play other games there so please feel free to drop by, even for 1 round.
-
Yes, I'm a definite
-
Great, so am I. Time?
Others? Come on UK users & lurkers. London Waterloo Mad Hatter 30th.
-
I live quite close, so whatever is best for those with longer travel times
-
Can people confirm they are coming on the 30th? Who's still in? Also, what time suits everybody?
-
I can make from say midday assuming there is a turn out of 4 pledged here.
2 of us so far...
-
Ok, we'll see what the state of play is at the end of this week and go from there
-
Just got Mage Wars, and think it could be a keeper. I even ordered the Druid expansion, a first for me with an LCG. It's a shame that these games seem to come and go so fast, as I instinctively prefer this to Netrunner... but I have a feeling somehow somewhere I will find people to get into this.
I'm not that interested in formal competitive play - I haven't even graduated from the pre-built decks yet - but wouldn't mind finding a quiet pub somewhere to get some practice (beyond my 7 year old son!). I live in Farnham, UK, and wondered whether anyone else within a half hour radius might be interested in a game of an evening?
-
Hey, I'm based in London and like playing Mage Wars. Plus I know a few guys from just north of London who like to play.
Unfortunately I've already got plans for the 30th, so won't be able to make it along, but it would be good to get involved if there's another one!
-
Ok, it seems like the 30th is a bust. No worries though, I know most if not all were coming from out of London. We should try and aim for something in January, it gives us lots of time to organize and I assume everyone's schedules will be clearer.
@Aravar: good to hear! We definitely need to hook up :-)
-
Definitely wish I could make it out across the pond to meet with you guys! But I will be there in spirit. You two might want to try out getting just you two together once every week, or month. I know getting people together can be a lot easier with two heads rather than one, as well, it may be easier for just the two of you to meet, rahter than a bunch of people. It's to start small with a local player base, and build from there. So get together and sling some spells! People will only join from there on!
That may not have helped at all, I'm just excited to see two players that live close together and are interested in the game enough to meet. Don't spoil it my friends!!
-
Is any Mage Wars player in the London area going to Dragonmeet today?
If you are, PM me here (will pick up on phone) and we can meet to arrange for future MW duels.
I'm half tempted to take my Mage Wars stuff there and Spread The Word...
(There's a whole untapped market of role-players who'd love this game)
-
Yes, I am keen to play more mage wars. Shall we plan a time in January since December from here on is subsumed by Christmas.
@DeckBuilder - I was there. Totally forgot to bring mage wars stuff though. Didn't see any sign of it either though, did you make any converts?
-
Yes, let's meet in January with a few others? I want to broaden my Mage Wars experience (even downloaded OCTGN - gulp!) as I'm concerned my local Brighton meta is adversely constraining the creativity of my builds.
Any other near-London player interested in meeting in January please post here?
(jkselwyn suggested the Mad Hatter in Waterloo where I've played games at before)
As for Dragonmeet, no, I didn't bring Mage Wars. Too bulky to bring on an off-chance.
I played some other games that were UTTER RUBBISH in comparison to Mage Wars.
Lords of War (Blue Box Games) was demo'd extensively (you couldn't have missed it) and has a nice mechanic to differentiate it from Summoner Wars but is bland, little difference really between the 4 factions (Elves, Dwarves, Orcs, Lizardmen). It's all tactics and no strategy and very little customisation. I still bought it (both packs for £20 seemed cheap).
Tash-Kalar: Arena of Legends (Zman Games) was a rubbish boardgame; poor components for £46 (Mage Wars is only £4 more, cheaper on Amazon) and so one-dimensionsal, utterly lacking in flavour in a theme that nobody can relate to. What a waste of my time. It really made me appreciate what an amazing game and what amazing value Mage Wars is.
Might & Magic: Duel of Champions was a PC game I was initially attracted to because the art is beautiful (if a bit samey, probably the same artist). But the mechanics are so simple, like Yugi-oh. Ugh. And the cards are so very derivative. I am surprised Wizards of the Coast haven't sued this French independent. Ho hum.
These disappointments made me realise just how lucky I am to have found Mage Wars and local friends who play it.
I enjoyed some Indy Roleplay Games (Microscope, Fiasco, Dungeon World was the best) which were nice ideas that still need polishing.
But all in all, it just made me realise how I would far prefer to have been playing Mage Wars!
-
The Mad Hatter sounds like a good shout if they are happy with an invasion of people playing games. Though I've never been myself.
@DeckBuilder I played Lords of War and Tash-Kalar at Dragonmeet and had really different reactions. To me neither of them were that similar to Mage Wars, and I enjoyed both. Lords of War was a tight little tactical game that felt like there could be some hidden depths around tricking your opponent into certain placements. Tash-Kalar was interesting because of the shifting ebb and flow it had, and in particular that felt like there could be a lot more going on once you'd got used to the basics.
Neither were as flavoursome or thematic as Mage Wars, but both felt tighter and more focused to me, and just different experiences. Different opinions Yeah!
Anyway, back to discussing meeting up. I'll throw the first weekend out there as a possibility, Sunday 5th?
Hopefully that misses people's Christmas plans, but isn't so far away everyone (me) forgets!
-
Sunday the 5th at the Mad Hatter is ok for me. Anyone else? Coming from Brighton, I'd rather a group of 4...
I see your points about those other 2 games. Maybe I was harsh. I found it odd that this is a convention full of roleplayers who value THEME primarily. Both those games are very mechanics driven and not very flavoursome, lacking in theme which Mage Wars has oodles of. Despite my rules-precise leanings, I presonally value fantasy realism above all else (willing to house rule even) as I'm a role-player. AW really should target role-players as its adherence to fantasy realism is its USP in the market.
Maybe see you on the 5th if there is take-up, if not sometime later.
-
Funnily enough, there is a board game meet up at the Mad Hatter on the 5th Jan anyway, this means that I'll be there no matter what. If people can let me know, I'll talk to the organiser just so he has a heads up, he won't mind the extra numbers.
Hopefully see some people there. And if there are any londoners who want to meet up for a game, pm me, we can hook up soon :-)
-
Hey guys, hope you all had nice Christmas's. Are people still on for meeting up to play some Mage Wars at the Mad Hatter this Sunday?
I'm good to come, and I'm assuming jk_selwyn is still planning to go, any other takers?
-
Hi aravar
Would you or jk-selwyn be willing to help playtest possible next set cards?
You will have to keep schtum about any of them in any forum though
Because the litte mage wars I get these days is spent testing cards in sub-optimal or oversynergetic books...
I will try to make it
Have fond (hazy) memories of gaming at the Mad Hatter from my London days...
-
Hi DeckBuilder, I'm happy to test possible next set cards. I'd like play a bit of normal Mage Wars too, but should be able to fit some playtesting in.
What time are others planning to get there? I'm probably going to pop along to the Sunday Assembly in the morning, so should be there around 1ish.
-
Thanks for suggesting the Mad Hatter jk_selwyn! It was a good place to play, plus all the others playing games there seemed really nice.
Good game too. I look forward to our rematch! I've no idea when they are next having a board game meet, do you know where it is announced?
-
yes, it was a good day, thanks for turning up, it was great to get a game in.
the event is available on the meetup website, it's called 'couples and board games', but as it's grown it's become open to singles and couples. the next one it's on the 9th Feb.
if others on this site are still up for arranging further games, just let me know :-)
-
Hi jk_selwyn are you up for playing another game of Mage Wars this weekend?
Anyone also interested in coming along too?
-
Hello, I live in Fulham and I'm excited there are some meetings in Waterloo. I completely fell in love with this game and can't wait to play as often as possible...
I could be hopefully free on Sunday (what time?) but this weekend depends on a lot of other factors, sadly...
-
Sorry, I've only just seen this. While there is a board game meet up at the Mad Hatter on Sunday (9th Feb), to which you are welcome, I personally have set up a game of Caverna, which takes a while, I doubt I'll be able fit in a game of mage wars.
please feel free to come along and play, but if you'd like to have more people available, I suggest we plan something for mid March, to give people time to join in and free a weekend.
let me know what's convenient :-)
-
Jk_selwyn - no worries I left it a bit late as I wasn't sure if I would make it. Mid-March would probably work (but might depend the exact date)
Polylux1 - it would be good to play a game of Mage Wars. I think last time I went along around 1ish, and had time to play a game and chat to people. Everyone seemed very nice, although they were all playing other games. I'm thinking I'll head along at the same sortof time this Sunday and then play it by ear. If you're definitely coming, let me know when and I'll make sure I'm free.
-
so I've finally found somewhere to accommodate mage wars meet ups.
it's a game group that meets in Wandsworth on every Monday and Tuesday, and two Saturday's a month.
ogforum.co.uk/index.php (see the challenges section)
they are friendly and are always up for more people. they play a variety of games but do focus on miniatures and the like.
hopefully see some people there soon :-)
-
Im based in Huntingdon. There were around 10 people playing mage wars at our games club last night so its really taken off with us lately. I'd be interested in any meet-ups or tournaments around by us (Cambridge? Bedford). I might be able to get others interested as well.

While I'm in London, if there was a tournament day, or something similar, I'd be up for coming along if it's in Cambridge, it's pretty easy to get to from here :)
-
Bah, SciCobalt beat me to it - but only because I've been away at a 3-day wargaming bash in Coventry over the weekend, and not that long home.
Yup, this cracking game has really taken off in the Huntingdon club. From a couple of us starting the game in mid- Jan this year, we've been teaching ourselves and others to the point where one of the guys put in a joint order for 16 base sets which arrived last week. Aye, that's right - sixteen, so I'd say that we're getting the boys hooked. And we've got premisis available that we can hire on a weekend for an event.
So here's to the future.....
Dave I
-
16? that's awesome! slightly jealous, it's hard finding players, I've only met with Aravar so far from this forum.
That's sounds great, SciCobalt, Young Dave, let me know if you organise anything :-)
-
OK JK. Dave and I can talk this week and perhaps we can sort something out for this summer. We'll keep you posted.
-
Anyone still playing/interested in playing in the London area?

We have four people starting to play regular in Stoke on Trent now and a few others who have the game who might start playing when the game sees regular table time. Couple of them have signed up for the event at UK Games Expo on the Friday.
-
We started a Facebook page for UK folks to discuss the game and sort out events if you are from the UK and interested. https://www.facebook.com/groups/508885842585307/
