Spellbook Design and Construction / The Warrior of the Light Priest

I've been making a Priest lately. I've only played one game with him and won against a Druid.

I spent a lot of time thinking of how I can use the Fire ability to my advantage. I wanted to make the most use out of a Dawnbreaker Ring. It's cost for 3 and giving you a max of two dice per turn is really good.

For melee, the Dawnbreaker Ring with Bear Strength means my melee is at 5. With the staff it goes up to 7! The basic melee can Daze and the Staff of Asyra can Daze or Stun. Adding a burn to both of those makes the melee attack important for the mage to use every round.

The goal is to have the option to burn the enemy mage whenever I want. The minute I burn I want to be able to maximize the damage for the rest of the round. So in an ideal situation I melee first to make sure I can burn the enemy (if it fails I hopefully can Akiro's Favor it). If the burn fails then I can use a Pillar of Light as backup to insure the burn and daze/stun. If the melee gets through then I want to use the Elemental Wand with Hurl Boulder to maximize the damage. I have the Hawkeye to add the damage to Pillar or Hurl Boulder. If they dissolve the wand I don't consider it a big loss.

I've considered two battle forges in this deck because the equipment is decently important. I have the armor ward because it makes the opponent really commit to destroying my equipment.

I have the cheetah speed so I can move quickly and still do both of my actions for attacking. Not sure if that's completely necessary.

For my Holy Avenger I want to use the Asyran Cleric. If he dies then they probably used more then 6 mana to kill him. In the match against the druid he stranglevined my Holy Avenger so I simply used the cleric to heal my priest then the upkeep for Stranglevine more then payed for himself (probably doubled up). The ability activating is really nice for the damage output. Not sure if I want 4 of them as 11 health is not really easy to kill.

I have been considering replacing the Defends with Brace Yourself. It seems like defend isn't really what I want in this deck.

I worry a little bit about a forcemaster. I have the temple of light to help. I tried my best with the falcon precision and the mass creatures. As soon as I think I can use Brogan safely I would bring him out.

I am also considering taking the Mana Crystal out or the Harmonize out. This deck may be to fast to use both of them.

Hey Guys!

We had a match over the weekend with our local Ambassador Ray. It's our 6th episode of Arcane Duels. Ray is using a vine heavy Druid book and I decided to make a Priest. It was one of our longer matches so enjoy!

I find that Sersiyx is a big commitment familiar. I usually struggle to find the mana to cast a curse or a flameblast with him every round. If you play him let me know how he turns out for you. I really like him as a creature!

Nice build man. I was wondering why you decided to go Anvil over Bloodwave. +1 ranged vs +2 piercing for a command spell are both really good.  I love the idea of using forcewave to move your whole unit into firing range.

It looks like you plan on going for a big creature play or a swarm imp play. I'm not sure how you're going to fit Sersriyx into this. Also what turn are you planning on getting Adramelech out? My opening for Adramelech is to turn 1 quick cast a mana crystal and double move. Turn 2 I cast Adramalech. It's a super committed play but I think Adramelech is no matter how you look at him.

Agreed. If I'm playing against a mage with enchantments I would certainly test the waters before committing so much to the card. You'll need 18 Mana to counter an unknown card and still use Drain Soul. With nullifies and reverse magic there are plenty of throwaway curses (the best being Maim Wings maybe). At least with Reverse Magic you can't get hurt, but they still gain life and you lose mana. Losing that much mana could lose you the whole game. You're right about playing it at random times. I think that better insures you get the spell to cast.

Good call with the Hellfire trap. The original intent (like the explode) is try and be faster with the damage so you can end it quickly with drain soul. A teleport trap will probably help you get more then the 4 dice of damage. I took out an explode, deathfang, and hellfire trap and put in the altar/plague zombie and added a dissolve and dispel. I kept the other Explode in because I really want to do more damage, but it is totally understandable to take it out for another dissolve and dispel.

I look at Malacoda and Poison Cloud as being the same. One is mobile the other isn't and you pay the mana for it. If you're lucky you get the attack with Malacoda. Since this spellbook is designed around a mobile spawnpoint I think Malacoda is better. If you could teleport trap into a corner with poison cloud and malacoda that would be a ridiculously awesome play. I guess there's a lot of ways you could play this spellbook with minor adjustments.

You're absolutely right. Brace Yourself is a great spell. I'm not sure what I would take out to put that in. Maybe the leather gloves. Or take out the Leather Gloves and the Deflection Bracers and put in 3 of them.

I have been thinking of taking the armory out. I like the play a lot but it seems like the minions wouldn't benefit as much as I originally thought. It would free up all the points to take this book to a more tournament level.

On your side note - Diablo 2 Necromancer was the first character I played in that game! I would love to see a Decrepify curse or a lower resist type of curse (in Mage Wars terms giving you + to toughness). Bone spear would be a sweet unique attack spell with sweeping. I think Bone Cage would be awesome (perhaps they won't do it because it would be like making another tanglevine) :(
I remember playing that game and getting a full party all new characters as paladins and stacking the auras up!

Drain Soul is a big surprise play. The wand of healing and purify create issues with it though. I usually like to wait until I can be lethal to use it.

Yeah I consider the double Drain Life/Soul to be my end game. I figure if you can heal just enough health to survive you can get the win. It's not perfect but it's very Necromancer like IMO XD

I would love a Bone Cages spell. Something like Diablo 2 would be sweet :D

The quality was totally my fault. I was working at Dragoncon (I work in conventions) and I didn't have the right equipment (using my gfs laptop) and it was in a hotel room that I couldn't find the best area for lights. But it was still a blast to make!

I will be in California in Februrary and around the Texas area then as well for a few conventions. Although It's in LA which is so far from San Diego. I'll probably start posting where I'm going if people want to have a match!

Dude great catch with the Eagleclaw boots. I didn't even think of the pushing being an issue. If the jet stream got a push & Daze on the D12 are you dazed? I would assume yes but it's worth asking.

You are definitely right about the walls not needing to be broken down. I suppose if he retreated I would have deathring/libro combo then started going for an endgame strategy. When he started attacking it I decided it was all or nothing because running would have been bad for me.

I definitely agree that the Death ring/Libro opening is the superior play, in most cases.
I have the 2 Mana Crystals when versing a Wizard or if I think someone will rush me turn 1. The point of it is to diversify my mana so round 2 I can do the appropriate response. I did the double mana crystals specifically for the double move wizard tower turn one. I find that if the opponent chooses to go after the mana crystals the mana/actions it takes to kill 2 crystals is far more of an investment, then dissolving a libro. On top of that I can get the mana I put into the defense back much quicker. As you saw though my response to the wizard turn 2 is not fully formed yet. The Emerald Tegu is awesome! I will definitely be considering putting it in if I can figure out what to take out. Otherwise your advice of the skeletal knight and maybe sentries will probably work as well.

I appreciate you pointing out the glaring problem with my book.

*Edit because I missed Plague Master* - Sorry if I missed it for editing the video. I tried to indicate the Necromancer Ability between the rounds, but in the game I did use it as much as possible.
