Title: Alfiya, lazy Enforcer
Post by: Enti on March 09, 2017, 01:27:31 AM
Hey guys,

since I first "accidentally" played with Alfiya, I am fascinated by that card and tried to build a deck around her.
First I tried to play her in a regular "temple-priestess"-deck but soon realized that this is not the optimal way to utilize her.
The next attempt was with the temple and 4 Light of Dawns..  But that again was too slow, not efficient enough.
Then I tried again, this time without the temple and with the battle forge + manually summon the dragon + the Light of Dawns. Again.. not very competitive - not even close.
The deck evolved, I started to summon Alfiya before the Light of Dawns and before I realized it, the deck changed again. No spawnpoint whatsoever.
Turn 1: Cleric + Basilica
Turn 2: double move + Enchanters Ring
Turn 3: Alfiya, lazy Enforcer and an enchantment.
Turn 4: Killing everything and everyone

Take a look at the (current) book:

If you are intrigued by this awesome dragon and if you are wondering if this really is viable, take a look at my (new!) yt-channel:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCafM9Dne-M4tM0Es9N6jZgA/videos

I uploaded 5 different games with her already and I still have 3 more that are being uploaded at this moment.

Feel free to voice your opinion! :)

At the moment I am thinking about playing her with the Paladin. The obvious advantage would be that I'd have 10! more spellbookpoints to spent and that I could use a ballista... But on the other hand no holy avenger (I rarely use this ability anyway) and no Malakai's fire.. (well.. maybe used once or twice a game)

And if you are interested in some training games, especially if you want to play a gate wizard or a druid, I'm all yours. I think these 2 matchups are the hardest ones.

Good synergy of spells.

1) I miss Consecrated Ground. Any reason why you dont use it?

2) In case the dragon is killed, what is your plan b to win the game?

After ~15 games in which I never used Consecrated Ground I finally cut it.
So the reason is.. there's always something better for 5 mana.

What I do, if the dragon dies?
Surrender? :p
It's in your hand to not let him die. You are a holy mage after all!

Why "lazy"? In my book, thats not a pretty word in case of noble dragon lady ;)

Life Link could help too.

I came up with "lazy Enforcer" because in an early game against keejchen, he managed to kill the cleric - out of the blue. And I didn't have a rouse the beast. So from there on Alfiya suddenly was completely useless. She just didn't do anything! Just flew there.. watching her master die. I call it lazy if you only work if someone is begging (praying to) you.

:p

I did not realize when I built my book with the dragon that it was a promo card released in a set. I doubt they will do that again. Mine went with more clerics and a temple. Seemed to work pretty good.

It's happened a few times...

I am 90% certain this is the latest iteration of my Alfiya book.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzKzzwqKCMRyQzdYdjBGWmFlQUU/view?usp=sharing

Turn one 5 mana cleric and Crown of protection
Turn 2 Alfiya, Pray, Double move Alfiya
Turn 3 Move Cheetah speed on Alfiya, Pray, revel Cheetah speed, Attack with Alfiya.

One thing to help keep alfiya alive is the 2 mage wands with healing spells. and Second Chance.

But if Alfiya dies, you're pretty screwed.

Second Chance for the cleric? (target is "Friendly Living Minor Creature", so it won't work on Alfiya herself)
This could be one of the few good uses for [mwcard=MW1I22]Resurrection[/mwcard], as it's half the price of a second copy of Alfiya.

Would it be more efficient to double-move your Mage on Round 1 (and perhaps a Mana Crystal), then Cleric + whatever on Round 2, then Alfiya + Cheetah Speed on Round 3? This saves having to waste Alfiya's first active turn just double-moving to close distance and gets your mage into a better support position.

Totally didn't see minor creature. we'll have to rethink that one.

I'll have to look at the math to see if I can afford Alfiya turn 3. plus i'll have to change some other things around.

Yeah, I get that. If your strategy is 100% dependent on Alfiya, then there are at least 3 ways to go in terms of insurance:
I guess a 4th option is to have neither in your book and concede when Alfiya dies (assuming your opponent is more than a Hurl Boulder away from defeat at that time).

*edit* Perhaps a better strategy is to pack a whole lot of level 1-2 clerics so that (1) you have back-ups that can pray to Alfiya and (2) they themselves are a threat while your opponent tries to deal with Alfiya. The theory would be that your opponent uses so much resources to deal with Alfiya that they can't survive the wrath of a mini-swarm of clerics. Light of Dawn, Artemis, Joseph Trublood and Messenger of Bim-Shalla are some of the more potent clerics, while Disciple of Radiance, Dawnbreaker's Initiate and Asyran Cleric are cheap and can be decent threats in numbers. Cassiel is Cassiel... so she should either be part of your primary strategy or not included at all, most likely.

You have more options Thank this 3. There are especially more ways to keep her alive then healing.

You can play with positioning to keep enemies away from her. You can use songs and so on to meddle attacks useless. Or you can put another thread on the the board. Or go for the enemy mages throat yourself or or or.

I also think with multiple clerics you can pray multiple times to allow Alfiya to attack multiple times a turn.  So if Alfiya gets 2-3 attacks a turn that could be crazy effective.

No, it's just once per round.

Watched a couple of the videos, always nice to see commented MW videos :)

If your tactic is so dependent on the clerics, then why not bring a few walls - and wall one off in the corner?
I don't believe that the prayer to activate Alfiya requires line of sight, or anything like that.

Plus: Alfiya is Flying.

For a Holy Mage, an extended (non-Pikes) wall is at least 4 sbp's and will cost at least 11 mana (but QC). Another cleric is 1 sbp and 5 mana (but FC). There might be cases where it's worth doing - e.g. if you're sure that 1-2 more clerics would be destroyed quicker than a wall for some reason, or you can't afford to FC but have the mana for a QC extended wall - but usually you're probably better off spreading a few clerics around the arena.

there are 3 clerics that are 5 Mana and 1 SBP. There are also 3 Clerics that are 9 Mana and 2 SPB. There are no holy walls. So walling off a cleric isn't really worth it.

There are a lot of cleric that are actually good at fighting as well. So you should always have 2-3 clerics on the board at all times.

You could also use a the Temple of Asyra + Harmonize to spawn the 5 Mana Clerics as a free action. Or Temple + Cleric to cast an additional Cleric each round to ensure you have enough Clerics on the board.

But the problem with the temple is when do you cast it.

Priestess -
R1 - (20) 10 (temple) = (10)
R2 - (20 +1) 5 (Cleric) 1(Crown) = (14+1)
R3 - (24 + 2) 24 (Alfiya) 2 (Leather [Boots / pants / gloves] ) = 0

or

Priestess -
R1 - (20) 10 (temple) 5 (Cleric) = (5)
R2 - (15 +1) 5 (Cleric) 1 (Crown)  - Pray original cleric = (9 +2)
R3 - (19 + 3) 5 (Deploy Ehren) 1 (Martyr's restoration) 2 (mend) Double Pray (temple +2) = (14+2)
R4 - (24 + 3) 24 (Deploy Alfiay) Pray (Activate Alfiya) (pray Temple +1) 2 (Leather armor or Mend if you still need to buff Ehren) = (1+1)

So you can have a 3rd turn active alfiya by herself w/ one cleric or a turn 4 Alfiya, W/ 2 Clerics and Ehren (hopefully at full strength)
