Title: Life span for mage wars
Post by: Raidre on May 26, 2013, 05:15:42 PM
So do we know any details of the life span for Mage Wars?  What I mean is, do we already know of all the mages that are going to ever be released, or does Arcane Wonders have plans to keep making more mages as long as the game is popular.

TL. DR
Will Mage Wars stop having new mages at some point and just have new cards/ Variants of the current mages?

Well, the Druid and Necromancer are due out later this year. I don't think anyone has come right out and said "more will follow" but I see no reason why they wouldn't keep making more mages as long as we keep playing the game.

There are going to at least be alternate versions of those 8 mages as time goes on and I would find it surprising if they didn't come out with any new archetypes after Necromancer and Druid.

I think you can assume that at the very least we will end up with two versions of 8 different mage Archetypes for a total of 16 character cards.

so just looking at the list of mages, I noticed its an odd number.  Being that it seems mages are released in pairs we need 1 more mage on that list-

just as an example

druid/necro
illusionist/Paladin
Sorcerer / ?????

who is it!

I think this is better. I think it will be another dark magic user to be pair with a Paladin.

I wasnt really trying to guess, I was just showing the fact that we need to know 1 more mage!

I just hope that it doesnt end up with too many expansions.

30 different mages, 30 different conditions (stun, daze etc) and 30 different traits (regen, flying etc) is simply going be too overwhelming in the end.

Im not saying the current state is anywhere near that point.

I still think there is plenty of room to fill out into, but at some point we will hit saturation and .... then what?

Hopefully at that point they will release a new game for us to buy.  ;)

Exactly that.

I now have base, fm v wl, tomes 1 and 2. I'll buy everything that comes out. Until the plethora kills the enjoyment. Will be a while yet I wager!

for some reason I feel like his language here is hinting  to the power of the next mage. Some type of confusion ability or mind twisting/ altering :p

Just watching the Origins demo on BGG.  In talking about the green and white spellbooks Brian mentions Druid, Shaman and Enchantress.  Druids on the schedule,  Shaman and Enchantress could be your missing one (+1?).  Shaman might be a bit close to the beastmaster through, depending how they conceptualise it.

I tend to conceptualize Shamans as having a strong connection to the spirit world which sets them apart from other nature mages.

I agree, but just wasn't sure what that might look like that would be that different.  Guess that's why they're the game designers and I'm not ;)  I guess spirit and perhaps mana style attacks, maybe more ethereal conjurations.  Some of the FM spells like the invisible stalker seem to work in this vein.

I'd also say that most animist type beliefs didn't separate the spirit world from the natural world, so there would (perhaps should?) be some overlap.

Seems like a future mages post!

I would imagine like any money making venture or company as long as customers are paying, buying expansion sets and other new content they will keep putting it out.

I would imagine AW sales and marketing force are looking not just for future expansion/content releases but also diversifying in selected areas of growth opportunities.

Increasing and maintaining player fan base must rank extremely high though.  Like was mentioned you don't want so many traits, conditions, effects the game gets confusing while still adding diversity of content.

The best way to do that is the different mages or combinations of major classes.  Like I would LOVE a holy/dark mage or elemental mage or things which have already been discussed.  I'm definitely looking forward to the Druid/Necromancer expansion no matter what traits/mage abilities or cards are in it almost.  I still play EverQuest after 13 years and I've always been a Druid so anything Druidly in any other games I play always interests me.  And Necros are cool too!
