What mages can employ similar tactics and how would they do so?
-
Pentagram and bats! :D
What mages do you think would work best and why? What flying creatures can you make the most of with certain support cards? Etc
-
Well it might not be flying. Alex west's thoughts:
Looking at the cards available, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see a viable Anvil Throne soldier book or any Warlock demon book do well. The "Fast" Battle Order for the soldiers, and the teleport power on Wildfire Imp both get the creatures where they need to be, while both Altar of Carnage and Pentagram offer powerful economic engines to support them.
Heck, even a Wizard's Blue Gremlins have the sort of mobility I want from a swarm creature, and Gate to Voltari isn't too shabby at mana generation. Though, Wizard is slightly lacking in the mass buffs I want for my swarm. I guess everyone has access to Marked for Death, but no other mass buffs like Armory or Bloodfire Helmet make it a little harder. On the other hand, the little buggers are pretty hard to kill due to their dodge and point of armor, so that's something.
Not sure how the pvs and lg cards affect this.

Well you have 3 swarm options there. I would like to see what you come up with using those ideas! :)
And who is alex west?

The person who played the aviary and won gen con 2014.

[mwcard=MWBG1C04]Slaknir, Goblin Chieftain[/mwcard] making all goblins Elusive is good, especially if you use the "Charge" battle order to make them Fast. But [mwcard=FWC05]Goblin Grunt[/mwcard]s are still a lot weaker and more fragile than [mwcard=MW1C37]Thunderift Falcon[/mwcard]s (esp Falcons with [mwcard=DNJ03]Etherian Lifetree[/mwcard]), even if you can afford an [mwcard=MWSTX2FFJ04]Armory[/mwcard].
Only Necromancer and maybe Siren can pump out creatures as quick as a Straywood Beastmaster, but their affordable creatures that work with their Spawnpoints aren't fast ([mwcard=DNC02]Deathfang[/mwcard] is a tad too expensive to really swarm with, and is easily Hindered).
-
So if you want a swarm build and not just a flying swarm build what makes the aviary different or made you choose the aviary style? Os it the fast trait, flying, something else?
Every mage has a spawnpoint and swarm option to work with. How well they work depends on how you utilize your chosen tools
I still think a pentagram bats amd blood demon combo would be cool! :)

Some thing that uses that same principle. Not exactly the Aviary, but a similar swarm concept.

So, which other mage has a spawnpoint, has an ability to quickcast lvl1 creatures and has access to cheap lvl1 Flyers with Fast and 3 attack dice ?
-
Well Alex mentioned other mages that could do similar things and I wanted to test! :)
-
Move 2 cast Graveyard in FC, use 4 Deathfangs
Move 2 cast Gate to Voltari in FC, use 4 Blue Gremlins
Poison Gas Cloud in Lair zone slowed Aviary down a lot.
Pillar, Bed of Urchins, Hydro Vent, Akiros Game etc. might be very anoying.

As a side note to the goblin swarm.
The Armory adds a lot to their basic 3 dice.
Pierce 1 is a big deal and that 1 point of armor means they can normally take 1 hit before dying.
Also with your full outpost econ and a generals rings you get 1 goblin grunt free a turn.
You can have out all 6 in 3 turns. after inital setup
Barraks + Outpost 12+4 16 of 19 mana 3 left over gain 9 > 12. Turn 1
Deploy Grunt for 2 spawnpoint mana and 2 of your mana, Rings for 3, Grunt for 3 1 less with ring / 2+3+3 8-12 > 4 + 9 > 13 Turn 2
Deploy Grunt 1 mana, Balista for 8 mana, Grunt for 4 left over mana 0 > 1+8+4 13 - 13 > 0 + 9 > 9 mana Turn 3
Deploy Grunt 1 mana, enchant yourself without reveal 2 mana, Grunt 4 mana. 1+2+4 7-9 > 2+9 > 11 mana TURN 4
Drop your Armory go to town.

Not every mage has a spawnpoint? ForceMaster for example?
And some spawnpoints are poor now matter how well you utilise them...

Whoops. Silly me
And i am of the opinion that any mage can use whatever cards they choose and have a viable book.

Yeah, we have vastly different definitions of 'viable' then.
