ADMW Winter Special
Standards
- The tournament will be played in two stages. The first stage will be a round robin. There will be 16 total players separated into 4 groups. The top two players in each group will advance to the second stage. Each player must play at least 1 game every week. Extensions will only be granted on a case by case basis. The tournament will begin December 17th. Once all players complete a round of matches, the next week will begin.
- A tie break looks at the match record between tied participants. For example, if Katherine and Dave are tied based on statistics but Katherine won when they played during the tournament, Katherine wins the tie break. When more than 2 participants are tied, they're ranked by the number of wins each one had against the others.
The second stage will be a double elimination tournament. The date to begin will be determined after the first stage is completed.
- All cards from Lost Grimoire and all sets prior are legal to use. All promotional cards available on OCTGN are also legal.
- Players will build a spellbook with the standard amount of spellbook points and restrictions.
Restrictions
- Errata
The Wizard and Wizard’s Tower has not been updated on OCTGN. We will be using the current errata even though the actual cards are not changed. This will also apply to spellbook building which has not been updated. So Wizard will be trained in Air, and Arcane only.
Link to Wizard’s Tower Errata → http://www.arcanewonders.com/arcane-wonders/wizard-ability-card-and-wizards-tower-errata
Disciple of Radiance text change
Once per round, whenever your Mage casts or reveals a healing spell, Disciple of Radiance may deal 1 direct light damage to a target creature in her zone.
Rules
If a player gets disconnected and dropped during a tournament match it will be considered a loss for that player
A judge makes the final call on a rule. Any argumentative discussion that takes an excessive amount of time will receive a warning then if it continues that player will be disqualified.
The Upkeep phase must be completed as quickly as possible. You are not allowed to delay Upkeep due to planning.
***Clarification***
Upkeep will have a time limit of 3 minutes. All optional abilities (lifelink, voltaric shield, etc.) must be decided in this phase. You are not allowed to reverse these effects once upkeep phase has finished.
Planning phases will be timed. You are allowed 5 minutes (300 seconds) at the start of the planning phase using the in game timer. Judges will regulate the timer - If there is no judge you can agree to not time the match
During both the first and last quick cast and the main action phase - Players will be limited to 1 minute to decide each action. Executing an action will not be timed. Judges will regulate the timer - If there is no judge you can agree to not time the match.
Only games from the second stage are required for judges. You and your opponent may both agree to play a game without a judge. If one player wishes to have a judge then the game must be put on hold until a time can be arranged for all parties involved. After the game both players must submit the results.

Is it one spellbook for the entire tournament or is it different spellbooks and each mage can only be played once?

Thanks for the question! So you are allowed to use one mage twice in the tournament, and all other mages once. It has nothing to do with spellbooks, so you could theoretically swap in a Priest for a Priestess book you ran already. So you could go Priestess,Priestess (twice), then Priest. After that you would not be allowed to play the Priestess or Priest for the rest of the tournament. It's a slight twist from the last tournament.
Hope that helps!
-
We won't check the cards from your deck. It is not necessary, because you cannot load decks that aren't validated by the deckbuilder AND because all cards currently available on Octgn are allowed for the tournament). That also means you could totally run the same druid book twice without making any changes.
-
Hello Coshade,
How many decks would you need for the tourament?
I'm going to be starting from scratch this year (An unfortunate accident with my harddrive dying), so I would like a ballpark guess on how many decks I should make.
Thanks
Werekingdom
-
If there are 4 groups of players with 2 advancing to the final round, you have a total number of 8 players playing elimination matches. So without a losers bracket, you would have to play 3-4 games in group stage (depending on how much people are in your group) and up to 3 matches in the final round.

Out of curiosity, has anyone found an easy way to get OCTGN to run on a Mac?
-
Just one more entry and we are full!
Wish I knew more about Mac support for OCTGN. Best thing I have is a test client they ran a few years ago. http://help.octgn.net/support/discussions/topics/46055
Not sure how it worked out. I suppose Wine is always an option, but I don't have much experience with it

Just an announcement.
We added an errata in the restrictions section. Here is what is included in the tournament
Disciple of Radiance text change
Once per round, whenever your Mage casts or reveals a healing spell, Disciple of Radiance may deal 1 direct light damage to a target creature in her zone.

Interesting. Is there a reason for changing it to once per round? I'd be very surprised if such an ability were OP in arena and not in academy.

It is Sailor. Because you can have 6 disciples out and academy only allows 3 at once. additionally, mana is a bigger issue, there is no spawnpoint in academy and games are shorter.
Cast 6 of them, each with iguana regrowth. Teleport/divine intervention into the zone, reveal the iguana's and you do 36 damage... You have just won the game.
Personally I'd errata to limit 3 of them in a book like in academy instead of the current errata.

It probably needs one of those things where it says "if this card's controlling mage is level 5 or higher…" The only cards I've seen so far that have that are equipment cards that give the mage an attack with one extra die if the mage is level 5+.
Maybe if this creature's controlling mage is level 5 or higher, increase its level by 1?
-
If you want to do an Errata or balance something inofficially, you should walk on a path that is understandable for everyone and solves the issue at the same time.
We thought about this Disciple-problem for several weeks now, some ideas came into the closer selection. Of of them had to be picked and since it's the tournament of Coshade and his Arcane Duels buddies, he is the right one to make that choice.
I think he made a good one. After the tournament we will see if that was enough or even more would have been nessecary.
-
Maybe it needs an errata that says that each disciple can only activate twice per round. It would be redundant in academy but not in arena. Two iguana regrowths times six disciples is 12 damage, which is more comparable to wot push combo, and costs more mana to boot.
Since it doesn't make sense to have a spell with a pseudo-semi-epic trait. That just screams "contrived" and "not streamlined" to me. And my earlier suggestion doesn't work either. Why would a spell that is easy for an academy mage to cast be harder for an arena mage? That doesn't make sense either. But if it was the disciple herself that could only use her powers twice per round before needing to recharge, that would make more sense.
-
Hey! So we had one player drop and that leaves 1 spot open for 16 players! If you haven't signed up, Email me today!!!
Also if we get 20, we will probably extend the first round to include more players like last ADMW. So if you are being shy to not take that last spot, don't worry!
-
Just wanted to update that Lost Grimoire cards will be legal!
-
I'm gonna have to bail unfortunately. A broken/dislocated right shoulder really limits my computer usage outside work. Sorry about this.

Sorry to hear that Devil! That sounds really painful. I hope you recover well.
That means we are 1 man short of 16! Anyone that wants to enter just email me!

Hey guys!
We are at 16 players! If you want to join still we would be able to put you in once we hit 20.
Join the awesome Tourney today!!
-
Is there a forthcoming list of potential players already? I'm interested in whom i am gonna be losing to this year! Lol!
-
Here you go! Keep in mind they will be randomized on the day the tournament begins. So you won't know who will be in your group until then.
Challonge ---> http://challonge.com/ADMWSpecial
If you want a record between MW tournaments feel free to register, it's free and tracks your W/L competitively.
Also I'll update the post on the front this weekend.

Well if my luck holds up ill end up grouped with Mystery, werekingdom, and poopstar. (Just for reference, these are all players who have historically beaten my ass many times. Poopstar has my first octgn play, and loss, of my career. Lol! )

I know the feeling, with my luck I'll probably be matched up with Biblofilter and MasteryMystery again.
-
I'd like to join the tournament! Is there still a slot available?
-
If u need more players let me know I could fill a spot. If werekingdom and sailor Vulcan approve my play and think I can handle it that is haha. If needed I'll get to building books! Otherwise I'd love to spectate some games or play anyone knocked out lol. Good luck to all!

If there is room then I would like to see you there.
I believe you'll learn a lot more when playing in the tourament then spectating, I did anyways.

PS: judging from our last match you're already at the level or higher then I was when I played last year.

I know I am not a player in the tournament, but I just wondered (since it is the first tournament that allows eye for an eye)-
How would you handle a tied game in the second stage of the tournament?
Another problem I had when I thought about running something similar to first stage (a problem we had in a tournament of another game a few years ago)-
How do you handle a situation where player A wins against player B and lose against player C, while Player B won against player C and player D lost all games?
Each player out of A,B,C has won 2 games and lost 1 game, and there are no natural tiebreakers.
-
Thanks for the kind words werekingdom! My problem is I just recently last week started building and tweaking my own book. I just don't want to be an embarrassment lol. But your right u only learn by playing better players. But I'm not postponing or going to put any stress on the tourney I can gladly just watch! If arcane duels post the matches I'll be watching. Coshade and gang your doing a great job!
-
Hey guys.
We are in the last few days for registration. We are currently looking at 22 people. If we get to 24 that would be awesome!
Sign up today!!
-
Assuming no one else wants to play, from my point of view there is no problem if we divide these 2 "spare MW players" into the 4 groups.
Granted, we'd have 2 groups with 6 people instead of 5 but honestly that only makes it a bit harder to advance to the elimination, nothing else. And the difficulty-level from the bracket is already randomly generated.. so it doesn't really matter, does it?
By the way: Anyone still awake and up for a game? :p
-
Why would a tournament not allow Eye for an Eye? The card has been tested and is perfectly fine not only in Academy but also in the Arena. While looking strong on the first impression the card also has weakpoints (f.e. you habe to save mana, you get a huge amount of damage too, etc.). Sure, it has become more dangerous to go for the big hitters when facing a holy mage, but that is life in Etheria right? Since there are plenty more dangerous situations to overcome, what difference does it make?

Isn't eye for an eye in PvS? Ergo it wouldn't be allowed in academy.

Where do you find that its not allowed?
-
I think Schwenkgott meant here:
I know I am not a player in the tournament, but I just wondered (since it is the first tournament that allows eye for an eye)
But I believe Super Sorcerer just meant the "first time" since it only has been brought out now.
-
Come on guys, let's get the hype rolling..
WE NEED 2 MORE PARTICIPANTS! WHO WANTS TO RISE TO THE CHALLENGE?!
I've spent a bunch of time automating a lot of stuff on OCTGN, gotta have more people come use it! ;D
-
Only required to play 1 game a week, right? Not sure i could swing much more than that if i joined
-

Yes, it's only requested to play 1 a week. With the holidays it may stretch a little bit on that or we may find more games getting played, but generally that's the plan. You can also play round robin games without a judge if you both agree. You are also aloud to play more then 1 game a week if all parties can be there.

In the event of a tie Challonge has an algorithm that allows tie breakers to be settled. If everything is evenly matched we would probably do a special elimination round, but the probability of that happening I prefer to think is very low.
-
I'm in if needed! I can do one game a week! I'll need to build some books but this seems to be a can't miss thing.

Im down if there is still a spot. Count me in

Know what? Why not.

Video has been recorded, but we haven't done commentary on it yet, for my match at least. We'll post a link to it once the video has been put up, and probably do the same for future videos.

awesome. thanks.

Werekingdom vs Keejchen
Werekingdom played Necromancer
Keejchen played Druid
There was once a newly wed zombie couple, the husband an old Venomous Zombie soon died from overdosing on Weeds. The wife on the other hand seemed to have 9 lives (she's a Plague on any husband), she just kept coming back like ... well a zombie, After a full walk around the world, she remarried to a hulking Brute of a zombie. This time the wife was driven to despair (probably because she kept coming back to life) and she to overdosed on weed like her first husband. The Brute now having no one nagging him, went on to fulfill his life long dream of being lazy and doing nothing!!! Leave the very irate Necromancer to do everything.
After all the blood and gore the Necromancer lived happy ever after, having collected a lot of new specimens.
The End.

Hey guys!
I've started posting videos on the front of this thread. We should be getting a game up every couple of days. Enjoy!
There have been some awesome matches so far

I'm very curious why Aridigas put Alandel in his deck. He's 10 points and not a soldier so it's really an uncommon choice. :)

This.!
On a more serious note, here's why:
I don't care about the ATW's Battleorders in this book. So he doesn't need to be a Soldier. I only chose the Kriegshammer over a brute because I needed some points.
My goal was to run 3 Amigos with an increasing threat-level:
Kriegshammer/Brute; Alandell, the BOSS Knight; Dwarfy-Dwarf, the Dwarfen Mage.
My manaplanning was a little (totally) off. That Bearstrength on Alandell wasn't useful either. But let's assume, I did all of those things right. Alandell hits for some really nice damage and Stun-Chance.
The Kriegshammer is a nice little distraction.
A geared-up ATW is nothing you should underestimate. 3 mana for a 6-dice rock?
With those assumptions, my creatures work without action support. And Alandell is a fantastic creature if you got no actions to spare. Feed him some mana, give him Akiro's Favor and watch him wrecking everything. In theory. 3-4 mana on Alandell, a 3 mana rock and a 4 mana rock. Or a boulder and a melee attack.
While I'm at it, some more notes:
That dispel-wand should have been a teleport-wand. IF I HAD ONE! A single Teleport could have swung the game a lot. But I only had lesser ones.
Should have dissolved that Cloak. Twice.
On one of the Rocks I totally forgot my Gloves of Skill. Just forgot them. 3 damage on 6 dice MUST be rerolled. Forgot it.
Zombies are really good at tearing down Earth Walls. Underestimated that. Twice.
Runed Pants are cheap. Runed Harshforge-Plate isn't.
That Gorgon-Kill was awesome, hands down.
Shark made a really fantastic game, so my gamble didn't really work out. If he'd take one of his stronger (read: darker) mages, he'll maybe lack that particular mage in a possible rematch. If he chose a mage with a better match-up, I could maybe score a win without using a top-tier mage.
Fun match, thanks again!

Any players from group D available to play tomorrow or Friday?

Hey guys!
Just wanted to say that with the holidays I have word from a bunch of players that people will be out. I would like to suspend the next round until after New Years. Please feel free to play some tournament matches even if you are not paired up with them in your group.
Reminder you do not need a judge for group stage matches, but both players have to agree to that.
if you want us to record (we would love to get video of as many matches as possible), always feel free to contact Puddn, Shark, Schwen or myself.
Happy holidays guys!
Thanks,
Coshade

Grimmbart Vs Werekingdom
Grimmbart: Forcemaster
Werekingdom: Druid
This is the story of an young Druid's bond between herself and her pet Bear and there on again, off again relationship. One early morning, a bright and chipper young Druid went strolling off to a match (Authors note: In the morning the Druid gains and cannot lose the traits: Blonde hair and Airhead.) When the time for the match to begin, the rival mage (an old and decrepit Jedi) came shambling into the arena, The normal taunts where given and the battle was joined. The beginning started off poorly for our young hero, the Crafty old Jedi summon a gallant knight and a hip demon, which the Bear became good friends with, hanging out in there zone and ordering pizza, much to the displeasure of the very irate druid. After much yelling... I mean after a long and fruitful dissuasion, the bear decided of his “own free will” to come back home (the castle prod may have help). In the bears defense, he never harmed his mistress, but the relationship between the two became rocky, he would wonder between his master and his friends with a dazed expression on his face. Frustrated with her bear's on again, off again attitude, she decided to take matters into her own hands, rushing to face her opponent. The Crafty Jedi on the other hand, disdained to bloody his hands and instead ordered his gang members to finish the job. The young Druid fought gallantly, and when the time came, she made a very gallant retreat. Not to be dissuaded the old Jedi, got tired of his inept minions repeated failures, so he started throwing things at our young heroine. Our hero stood firm, enduring the rocks and scorn thrown at her. surrounded by enemies our hero was about to make another gallant retreat when she was cruelly struck from behind by a jedi mind trick that hammered her to the ground, In the dust and debris, as the light is slowly fading from our heroine eye, she looked up into the eyes of her beloved pet bear and said her final words "Damn you bear! I needed more coffee." with that she faded away in the arms of her bear, The bear for his part lower his head, what appeared to be a tear fall down his face, he then …............. uh................ I'll skip the gory part.............. The End.

Sorry i missed my match last week because forgot about new years. Have I been disqualified or what?
We took last week off because of the holidays.
-
Hei Henry,
Want to play some time this week?
-
Hi everyone,
as it is right now I sadly don't find the time to play OCTGN. Real life has needs me a bit too much...
For that reason I will withdraw my place at this ADMW Winter Special. I am really sorry about that!
I have talked to Coshade, and my exit would be an auto-win for each mage in group C.
But to be honest I would love to see someone else taking my place, enjoying the tournament. In my eyes this is a great event and it would be wasted energy of AW (who are doing a fantastic job here!) if it would be continued with an empty slot.
I wish all competitors some good fights in the arena! Hoping to see you all there somewhen anyway :)

I'd like a short talk about the tournament from the organizers and maybe a guest. About how it is going, if the expectations are met, etc - some commentary! Like they do on tv :p
/edit: Stuff you could talk about:
- most exciting matches so far
- biggest surprises
- featured matches that are coming up in the future (following week)
- cards that (unexpectedly) performed well or are played more frequent than expected
- a bit of analysis in general

Just started watching werekingdom vs Grimmbart. Noticed the sticky note that werekingdom brought with him to the game to remind himself of what his openings were. Is that allowed? It seems like cheating. If someone did that at an official offline tournament they'd be disqualified right? And if it was allowed here I'm sure everyone would be doing it and they're not. Something like that needs to be spelled out BEFORE the tournament starts. Otherwise the players who do bring notes with them into their matches gain an unfair advantage over those who don't. Am I missing something here?

I don't see how it's an unfair advantage. You've made a plan that you'd like to execute and you're just reminding yourself what you wanted to do. It's not a printout of the other person's spellbook or extra cards or anything.
Also, as you know from watching the video the plan gets derailed rather quickly. At that point it might be a liability if you stick to a plan that doesn't have contingencies in it.
-
in irl matches like gen con, i do not recall any injunction against something like this. it is a crutch for memory for his own mage, not info on his opponent for example. it does not give him any special insight beyond a reminder text. i can understand your viewpoint however. because, there is no guarantee that his note is just for himself. i could contain insights on his opponent, tendencies etc. however since this is online, such notes could easilly be handwritten next to him and you would not know. not sure how it can be prevented here.
come to think of it, in a irl match, something like that is easier to catch as a judge. perhaps grizzly can chime in as he has been a head judge for several tournaments.

Well, because most people don't use sticky notes and are relying on memory and on how well they know their book in order to make the right play. And most people probably didn't realize that they could bring strategy notes into a tournament match. If someone needs notes it's probably because they didn't practice enough or don't know their book well enough to know what they should do in the moment and adapt accordingly to what their opponent is doing. So just to be clear, does this mean it's okay to write notes on the back of my hand to help me in tournament games at gen con? I'm pretty sure if it's not allowed at gen con then it shouldn't be allowed in ADMW especially if the players aren't told about it explicitly ahead of time. This is common sense. The logic doesn't change just because you're playing online instead of at a convention.
I've lost track of the number of times players have tried to cheat by using the online interface as an excuse to ignore common sense and pretend to themselves that they're not cheating. For example when people don't roll enough dice for their attack, and they think that means they can reroll ALL the dice including the ones they've already rolled even without akiro's favor or divine challenge. And no matter how many times I tell people that they can't do that they still keep doing it anyways.

Probably because it's common sense not to do that sort of thing at any high level gaming tournament? It probably didn't occur to anyone that they would need such an injunction.

agreed. in my experience at several tournaments irl, i have never noticed any notes during a match. i agree that folks should not have such aids during a match. it should be mano e mano, not mano e mano and his pda full of info.
between matches review some notes for upcoming match sure. not during. and i also agree should not matter online vs irl. just not sure how it can be policed other than integrity and honor system.
-
Regarding dice, that's not a common sense approach. It's a potential approach. I've played many different types of games that if you roll the wrong number of dice, you don't just add more dice to make up the difference, you roll the full correct number of dice. And I have no idea how notes about my book give me any advantage. Should we ban people with photographic memories since they have even more of an inherent advantage. Having notes on others books or strategies would be an issue, but not your own.
-
Im with puddin and devil. I dont see a issue with it.
-
What a fascinating question posed here. Sure I'll chime in my two cents for what it's worth.
For dice, forgetting to roll the correct amount of dice is common. If they roll too few dice and it's caught fast enough, simply allowing them to roll the extras they left out solves that. If they rolled too many, for example forgot to take Aegis into account I typically have them roll the correct number and cap the damage at whatever the previous roll was. For example if you roll 4 dice and do 4 damage to me, rolling 3 dice and getting 6 damage isn't going to happen. Get it right the first time :)
In terms of notes. Zot you're right I've never heard of any official ban on them at high level events. However I can see how an issue could arise fast. I can actually quite easily see someone accusing someone with notes of using them as cheat sheets. It'd be simple enough for the judges to just read the notes ahead of time but there's a precedent here that I think holds. Any supplemental items you bring with you to a high end event MUST be approved by both players. This was the ruling in 2015 with those Status Board tablet things. Even a magnet board could in theory been seen as a way to cheat and requires approval from your opponent.
So an official proclamation regarding Gen Con? Ok sure here you go: You may keep a note with you to remind you of your opening so long as your opponent has no issue. The second someone has ANY issue at all though you will be required to put it away or face forfeit of your match. Repeated abuse will result in expulsion from the event.

Lots of things here.
First, you're making a HUGE deal of something that is really not a big deal. If we're at GenCon and you have a hand written battle plan of your first X turns, why would I care? Flexibility wins games, not notes you take about how you would like to your OWN book to play out. Chill out, we're a friendly community here.
Second, in regards to the dice, an example from our local rules (for my personal gaming group) are that if you have to reroll dice or roll the wrong amount, you correct the mistake by rolling the correct amount in it's entirety. It's just easier to keep track of for many reasons irrelevant in this particular thread. While that may not be the case everywhere, it is understandable that someone would think to do so, and most definitely not cheating. It is LITERALLY not changing any of the statistics involved. Flipping a coin a min ago and it landing heads does not make tails suddenly more likely to occur on the next flip. I also like to point out that rolling more dice on octagon by mistake is a lot more common than in real life, at least for me. Since Octagon works so well, you can be caught off-guard the few times the wrong amount of dice is there.
I've always played that you re-roll all of your die, since, in theory, it shouldn't change the outcome of the attack and that has been the norm of 99% of my octagon matches. Perhaps also stating what rules are for dice and re-rolls might be needed if people get to heated about this issue.
However, if you manually add more die to roll, the dmg step is not automated so it would be easy to catch someone who is actively trying to "get more good rolls" however, I can not think of one time that has been an issue.
When it comes to notes and online play, I do not know in what capacity you're able to check if someone would be using notes, but I guess that might be an issue if you were only playing one deck for a longer tournament. But that could be fixed by having private matches, with the only the judge being in the lobby beside the players, and everyone agreeing not to say anything about the games they play. So unless its a 1 deck tournament, I see absolutely no problems with notes, and I have no idea as to why anyone would consider it cheating. If you are playing vs someone who relies on following a set script for the first few rounds, I'd say you are playing against someone who is not comfortable playing their deck.
However, we've moved away from 1deck tournaments as of late and I think that's a really good approach to the game, especially since we have a really passionate community that loves to play and watch other play!

Tomorrow, Jan 17th, 8pm cet aridigas - MrBubu in Group B!
Looking for someone to record/judge

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Please stop clogging this thread and instead bring up "cheating" issues offline or elsewhere so that they can be resolved in a manner that doesn't derail the tournament thread.
Sorry if that came out wrong. It's just really frustrating when people do that. Re-rolling dice is a specific effect in the game with its own relative power levels. If you can reroll dice you've already rolled every time you forget to roll enough dice, that is like getting a free extra use of divine challenge or akiros favor. It literally does change the statistics involved. There is no way that if wouldn't. Rolling 2 dice and then rolling 3 dice is statistically different from just rolling 3 dice. That's why divine challenge is useful in the first place.
Well if you don't see anything wrong with someone bringing strategy notes into a high level competitive tournament, nor with no one else being told that this was permitted, even though it's common sense not to do this and even after I explained exactly why it is problematic to do this then I'm not sure how else I can explain it to you.
-
Me and Arxiducs will kick of at 9AM eastern time today.

Concerning the note:
No reason to argue if it is allowed or not since there is no way to prevent it anyway.
So we just have to allow it for everyone anyway.
The more interesting questions is, how to tell if someone rolls the wrong amount of dice.
There are multiple methods how to proceed then and while I favor a certain way I am fine with anything as long as anyone deals with such a situation in the same manner.
We could, to make things simple, just say, that you always have to re-roll (all the dice) again if you rolled the wrong amount.
I admit I don't particularly like this approach since you potentially help the person who made the mistake in the first place. For example he rolled 5 dices and got 3 non-crits. But he was supposed to roll 4 dices. Now he has the chance to roll again and make more dmg with 4 dice than with his prior throw. Of course, it could also happen that he rolls 8 dmg with his 5 dices and when he is forced to re-roll he only does 2 dmg. But ultimately it is his own fault so no tears from me. I just don't like it that this rule potentially benefits the one who made the error. Someone who misplays in a tournament (rolling the false amount of dice is his responsibility after all) should not profit from it. At least not in a tournament.
Therefore I propose a slightly adjusted ruling: The opponent decides if the one who made the error:
- rerolls the correct amount of dice
- subtracts dice from the prior throw
- adds additional dice to his prior throw
Of course, that rule is tough for the one who made the mistake since when he rolled very good he will be forced to roll again and if he rolled poorly the opponent will make him keep the roll and add/subtract one die or more from the roll.
But to be honest, HOW we do it is not even that important. That we do it in the same way all the time, that is.
I'd like a decision from coshade (who makes the rules for this tournament) and then we just stick to that ruling.

That's why divine challenge is useful in the first place.
Rerolling dice that would be applied is a special event in Mage Wars. Just rerolling some dice isn't. If my Mage is to attack your Grizzly or whatever, does it change the outcome of my attack if I roll 5 dice before, pick them up and proceed to throw my attack dice? No. It does not.
Does it change the outcome of the attack if I make my attack, roll some dice, am not satisfied and use my akiros favor to roll again? Yes. It does.
The only important thing is that you handle these situations in the same manner every time. If I roll 1 die less 2 times and both times roll my ectra die seperately, that's okay. If I reroll the correct amount of dice every time, that's okay as well. If I add one extra die to one attack and reroll the other, that's not okay.
Different people may choose different approaches, so two players might reroll one attack and add a die to the other attack. But that's fine as well.

What unfair advantage do you get from bringing strategy notes? You don't have to remember all these things you wrote down. That's it. Strategy notes in your head aren't unfair.
There is no need to tell anyone that something like this is allowed. Noone told me it is allowed to drink a glass of water during play. I did last time. Am I disqualified now?
I am not (hopefully!). Drinking water does not give me an unfair advantage.
I really don't see anything giving unfair advantages that doesn't violates the rules of Mage Wars.
Carrying more cards in your spellbook than allowed?
Planning 3 spells each round?
Channeling 22 mana every turn?
Summoning a Grizzly as a quick action?
These things are unfair. But these things aren't allowed by the rules.
Drinking water?
Carrying sticky notes to make up for your poor memory?
Being completely naked during play?
These aren't unfair. (Some might be weird.) None of these are forbidden.
Most important thing to remember:
This is for fun.
After completely derailing this, is someone available to record MrBubu and me?
-
Being completely naked during play?
Uhm, do you wear clothes while playing? :o

Guys, Sharkey asked us to not clog this thread with cheating issues and dice talk. We gotta keep this one clear for tournament updates l. If you really wanna keep talking about this make a new thread.
-
I've updated Challonge if anyone is interested in following how close some of these brackets are.
Link to the brackets --> http://challonge.com/ADMWSpecial
If I have missed any of your matches or mages please let me know and I'll update it ASAP.
Thanks!

Update on Group C
Arxiducs (wizard) vs Powlich (druid)-
Strong player with an even stronger druid! If my tricky wizard would have only had in the spellbook an arcane corruption and a ward!! Powlich's druid won after my wizard became too old to keep playing. The end was probably inevitable, but better earlier than later (conceded). Thanks for a great game, Pow! I will always remember that epic reverse attack! :)
Arxiducs (wizard. 2nd time, yes) vs Reddicediaries (necro)-
This player is getting to such a level that I do not want to coincide in the same group during upcoming tourneys! ;)
Skelly necro read me first turns as if my wizard was an open book. Supression wizard denied mana to the necro and finally achieved the necessary advantage to give the final blows with lightning bolts. Thanks for a great game, Red! and thanks to Sharkey for making the time to record the game.

After discussing with reddice my FM book that i played against Charm i realize that i played Mind's Eye wrong.
It only allows for quick cast spells, and i used it twice for crumble with a thoughtspore.
How do we handle this?
-
In the rules it explains that there is no requirement for a judge to be present in the round robin stage. You can of course always request one and have a judge monitor the game. Choosing not to have a judge can lead to rules mistakes. I won't mediate the decision of the game, if you two wish to replay you may. It's up to you.
-
if you think it might have made a difference between winning and losing then you should probably replay it

Hey man,
Thanks for the congrats. Laddinfance sadly will not be joining us on the forums as much anymore. I am going to miss his awesome community management skills and seamless ability to softly but effectively moderate the forums. While I am not any sort of replacement for him as an employee of Arcane Wonders, I do hope to help bring the community together like he has for years in the past.
If you ever have any questions about the forums always feel free to PM me!
Also I have been given the inventory of banana stickers ;D I will distribute them responsibly

Will there be interview, with him on upcoming extensions for mage wars?
Do you remember my idea of creating a carts with the help of the community for an expansion?

Just a reminder. Especially in group's C and D it could make a difference who advances to the next round. That really would be a shame (from my point of view).
-
Can anyone record me vs park 12PM today?
-
Yes

Could we get an updated list of all the mages used by all players?
Also, now that the deadline is up, how are the remaining games scored and when will the second stage begin?
-
Could we get an updated list of all the mages used by all players?
I think this would be great for fairplay as some matches are recorded or mentionened in this thread with what players used what mages.
Personally i would hate to start spending time (wasting) investigating what mages my next opponents has used. So i rather have it officially announced.
-
Just wanted to thank everyone that has played so far in the ADMW Winter Special! I've been seeing a lot of awesome games using and abusing some of the new tech we get from all these sweet expansions. What I have really appreciated so far is that I have not had one mean conversation with any competitor yet! In fact there has been an extremely high amount of sportsmanship from everyone so far. Anyone that is not advancing, just know that I would love to see you back in the next tournament.
While we still have a backlog of games to release from the first stage, I would like to move the event forward to...
Stage Two
Congrats to everyone advancing to the next stage!
So now that we are entering a double elimination set there are a few things I would like to remind players of that is different from the first stage
1) Upkeep phase is limited to 3 minutes, barring any sort of lag which will allow for some extensions (we all know how octgn gets sometimes).
2) Planning phases are limited to 5 minutes (300 seconds). Judges will regulate the time limit and give proper warnings in advance.
3) During both the first and last quick cast and the main action phase - Players will be limited to 1 minute to decide each action. Executing an action will not be timed. Judges will regulate the timer
4) All games from here on must have a judge be present. If there is a big time problem there can be an exception, but in general we want to record every game in this stage.
There are a number of players that have some games I unfortunately missed mages for whatever reason. If you are a player below, please just PM me so I can update which mages you are crossing out for your games. Let me know if there are any errors as well!
Schneeeente --> In the clear!
Keejchen ---> In the clear!
Aridigas ---> In the clear!
Sharkbait --> In the clear!
Parkdeck ---> In the clear!
Powlich ---> In the clear!
Theasaris ---> In the clear!
Jacksmack ---> In the clear!
I wish everybody luck and know that if you win there will be all sorts of internet prizes in your future!

We will be announcing the beginning of the brackets once everyone has gotten their mages in

So how do we proceed from here? Should we just organize matches as before and then try to find a judge?
-
Parkdeck and I are looking to play our match between March 13th and 17th. No specific date has been set yet.
-
Aridigas and I are both available to play the 7th or the 9th of march at around 16 pm CET. Any judges available for those dates?
-
@Keejchen That's unfortunately right as I start work here. Maybe Schwenkgott can cover it?
-
Hey guys! Feel free to start scheduling matches. In general I am free after 7 PM. Chicago time Mon-Fri, or Saturday and Sunday I can make time for matches!
Looking to get this done by the 19th but preferably by Sunday the 12th.

I know that I cannot be available to judge this game. It's right in the middle of work for me and I can't take that day off either :(

Sorry jacksmack, I cannot be there for the game.

Ok thanks for the answers.
What are our options for Sunday (remember we are both CET (UTC+1)) ?
We are both available most of the day - however Powlich we prefer to start no later (atleast not much) than 18:00 CET - in case the game drags out. (not sure if the new time format handles that.)
Cheers.

I can make time for you guys whenever on Sunday. even if its like 3 AM my time. Best commentating will happen with that 8)

Then i would like to book you for a start up @ 17:00 CET (UTC+1).

There's a good chance that parkdeck and I can play tonight. Would a judge be available from 7:00 or 8:00 PM CET?

Hello everyone!
It has been brought to our attention that currently the Ring of Ocean Depths is bugged to not be allowed in Druid books. If anyone wants to use the ring in a Druid book, please contact a judge and we will let you know how to proceed.
Thanks!

I wouldn't normally rib somebody on spelling, but if you're going to use size 24pt font, you're kind of asking for it
-
Yeah, I'll be going at keejchen with the cutting board. :D
-
Me and Enti / Schneeente would like to request a judge Thursday 30th March 20:00 CET (UTC+1).

I choose Sunday at 19:00 CET, 13:00 CDT...However....I'd be happier with 19:30 or the original 20:00 as that lets me get home with a little time to spare.
-
I am not available on saturday. and sunday
-
Hey guys! I can make Saturday!
-
Puddn, would either Monday or Tuesday work for you too, so we could also have schwenkgott commentating?
-
That should work for me
-
I would prefer monday or tuesday as well, if given the option. :)
-
I'll hand Keejchen vs Theasaris over to Schwenkgott then. Go ahead for Monday/Tuesday. It's the middle of the workday for me and I'd have to take time off to cover it.
-
Me and Enti / Schneeente would like to request a judge Thursday 30th March 20:00 CET (UTC+1).

Can we promise it will be less than 3 hours? I can try if we can keep it to 2.5 hours or less :)

Ok, then let's do Monday 19:00 CET with schwenkgott!

If jack tells me beforehand which mage and strategy he is going to use, I could make an estimation!

I'm not sure if they can puddn. We can't force them to play a faster book or know exactly when the game will end.

I have made the necessary arrangements. I can cover this game. It would still be nice to have it be shorter, but it is not required.

Do you think that 4 hour MW games are too long? Then this thread is for you:

I know this is way more work, but for me, the youtube videos would be much more enjoyable to watch if (most) of the planning phases and extensively long thinking moments would have been cut in the video.
This is no critique to the players because I do this myself at certain moments. However, for a video, this is too slow for me.

Increase playback speed? Skip ahead during Planning?
I don't think I've ever watched a video of a match in its entirety. I generally play back at 1.5x and still skip the slow parts. It's not so much that I'm impatient as that I don't have infinite time for hobbies. Actual play time is a premium, and when I have spare moments I tweak spell books... rarely have time to watch other peoples' matches.

aridigas vs parkdeck happening today? Will it be recorded?
I did not see any sort of official post here about this game, but I can judge and record it. I will NOT be streaming if I am covering the game solo. The streaming has been messing with the recording (can't tell if PC or Internet is the real culprit).
The Arena opens in about 5 hours.
-
Are there any judges available for powlich - theasaris Wednesday 19:00 CET?
-
I will know by the end of today!
-
I will be there to judge tomorrow. If anyone wants to catch it live check out the Arcane Duels stream!
-
Awesome, thanks Coshade! Looking forward to the match.

What's happened to the tournament? When are the final rounds happening?

Something weird like warm sunshine in europe? 8)
(The whole forum is thinned out at the moment. The tournament behaves just like that)
-
OCTGN has been down for the past few weeks. Unfortunately it is still having chat problems. Now that we can play games again, let's try and wrap this tournament up!
-
hei guys,
a month ago I offered coshade to drop out of the tourney since i had a high workload at that time and didnt want to slow things down. Then octgn went on vacations for a few weeks. But it's on again and nothing happens since then. Biblo writes summaries on the tourney as if it was over.
So first I would love to see the last matches since we all put a lot of effort/brain/time in it and second it's a bit unsatisfactory to know that stepping back was completely unnecessary.
best, parkdeck
-
Enti has been offline for over a month. I hope he will be back soon.

Thanks for all the support to keep this tournament going. I really want to see this tournament go to its conclusion as well. There are some really good players in the finals and I am very curious to see who ends up the champion.
I've contacted Enti. If he does not respond within in two days I am going to default the win and we can proceed in the tournament. If anyone has a way to message him in a different way please feel free to ask him as well!

Powlich vs keechen should also be a very good match. Looking forward to it.

So when will that be postet?
At the beginning sind games were uploaded more or less instantly. Now it was a high end quarterifinal or something and everything seems sleeping... There wasn't even a single note who won.
Come on guys, give the tournament back the hype it started with! (Right now everybody seems to hype about gencon and so on, but for all non-US-players that's kind of boring)

I agree that the community is not extremly active.
Watching parkdeck/powlich i see only bad play by the priestess up to 60min at least, dont want to offend anyone, but a magewand with dispel/disperse/remove curse to PERMANENTLY remove the ghould rots (even though there is a wardstone, just skip casting a creature once), which forces powlich to react and get close again, and the bit of dmg he took from the griffin with deathlock out hurts, with deathlock he cant heal himself, ghoul rots gone (2 easily if powlich wouldnt react even more) he cant use deathlink as no healing etc.
would be cool to know the deck of parkdeck, if it was just bad play or a bad deck
Hard to judge powlichs play if your oponent doesnt really do anything against your play. watched also keechen jacksmack, why take dmg from curse item for ages and then finally drop your armor, just drop and take a new one, was just like a dissolve in that case. If you already see its a direct dmg build, and again magewand/dispel/disperse early.

Does this mean your a bigger fan of wands in the current meta?

I don't exakt to offend anyone as well, but I think to just complain about bad play is not fair.
I know parkdeck personally and know that he was competing for fun. We guessed he would have no chance to pass group stage, since we expected to see strong players. So he blew all his favourite mages right at the beginning, taking a personal weaker one each stage. Now he made it to 4th place with one of his personal weakest mages in the last game.
So instead of talking about bad play I salute him for coming so far in an international tournament!
Now if you think about it, the problem I see, is the thin playerbase that plays at a high level. How could he come so far of he played that bad, and where are those strong players?
I think the future of mage wars Arena is in danger and you can see this right here. And I think AW are the only ones that could change this, by changing their politics.
- start support for spellbookbuilder, app, podcasts and whatever had been started and suddenly stopped
- fulfill needed errata
- start pushing arena again instead of academy
- stop making the game complexer as needed
- give the players a transparent time table of future releases and stick to them
- and so on...
If I would try to compete at tennis worldchampionship in wimbledon and would find myself surprisingly on 4th place, I would not see the problem at my bad play at all 8)
And by the way comments like mysteries (even if true) don't help that much to get more players competing. I am thinking twice now if I would take part, if comments are that hard.

I think Mystery's just trying to convey his thoughts about the recent games.
That being said, I do think his post was a bit harsh.

English (as I'm aware) isn't mysterys first language, and there hance been a few posts already as to the difference in commentary style between our US players and our European counterparts. I am certain that he meant no offence by his remark. His meta discusses things in a much more frank manner. Its more direct true, but local folks from across the pond tend to take no offence to blunt commentary like that as they know it's simply an assessment, not an indictment of being a bad person or bad player. Good players make bad plays from time to time as well, doesn't make them bad players.
And not for nothing, hasn't Mystery won many tournament's both local and global? He's kind of looking at this from the top of the heap so to speak. Its an undeniable fact that he usually knows what he's talking about.
Just my 2 mana on the subject.
Ps. As for the arena vs academy expansions, i say keep the academy stuff coming! We have gotten some amazing cards out of the academy sets so far, and they work great in arena!
Cards like glancing blow, dodge, cure, mend, firestream, wispwillow amulet, leather chausses, kajarah, 2nd chance, divine revearsal, sanguine hunter, white cloak knight, asyras blessing, sanguine thirst, disperse, crumble, arcane ward and a ton of others have made arguably more of a impact on arena than they have in academy! Its not stopping either, the new quick cast creatures were getting from forcemaster academy? Yes please! Yes a new arena mage woulde be nice, but how many sirens do you see nowadays? Nobody's figured her out yet. What're'ya gonna do with another mage set? The meta just changed twice in rapid succession, once for pvs, and again for lost grimoire, and even to a lesser extent when priestess and warlock academy came out. There's so much meat to this game and so much more coming all the time. Give academy a chance. Take game commentary wth a grain of salt as this game is global amd not everyone hears things thr same way. This game is amazing, this meta is amazing, let's as jyst take a breath and relax no?

Thanx for your feedback.
I know Mystery talked from an analytical point of view. I did not want to offend him. But there actually seems to be a lack of high class players taking part at the tournament. I wanted to open some eyes for that aspect.
From a businessman point of view AW should always have an eye on their customers needs. And I think they don't do that enough. A good player experience is essential for their business. And I also think that's part of the reason why there are only a few players. So I tried to analyse the analysis in a way :)
For academy vs arena. I like many of the new academy spells. And yes Ib don't see many sirens also. I don't want to say academy is bad. New arena mages every 6 months would absolutely be overkill.
I don't find good words for it. I miss some straight, focused masterplan behind what AW is doing.
Like if some players plays few big creature the first rounds, then meditates with amulet, then plays half a swarm. These all are good things to do, but they need a masterplan to really work well.
Maybe I am overthinking this and everything is great. I hope so since I love the game!
-
Well Bilblo, Drefan, and Mystery did not compete in the tourney. And in some order, they are the three top dogs in mage wars ATM imo.
-
I am sorry if anyone feels offended. It’s important that a lot of players play and make mistakes. I thought more of giving helpful critics and maybe a bit of play analysis after to say what could be done better and so on. I was kind of a bit more suprised of the commentary @coshade bud :-*y. We already had a similar discussion at some stage in a german speeking tourney of our critics being to harsh, but I rather be strict than calling some play awesome if it isn't. And recap analysis sometimes is necessary and you don't see it right away, but might lern for the future - or not. (like i pointed out in the famous wizard duel with charmyna I could have tried shooting my wizards tower with my ballista to recast a new one).
Am not sure if it is really related to English, probably a bit, but more comes from my direct way in general. I had been reviewing games a few years and are focusing a lot on finding flaws... Also the ones of the play testers know my posts, I am often also more direct there and rather critical about a single life/mana/... balancing cards, even if many find a nice card I say its still a nice card with 1 life more, but also competitive so why not change it. I am very mathematical driven sometimes.
Concerning tourneys, the Winter special was meant for December/January wasn't it? That's why i didn't compete being busy there, just dragged a long a bit. Small prices might change participation and activity too (an academy pack or LG or ... for example). What I had really enjoyed about some of the older tourneys were posted books and small recap writing by the players in Thunder dome G for example. I think about two kind of tourneys, long one easy which take time or short ones were a game has to be every week roughly or even less and you write small after match reports and discuss the strategy. That will create a momentum of real community interaction for a rather short period. Some might invest the time from that experience we might be very motivated for a longer period to try what you see in the tourney, reading through the post-game analysis' for example.
In my PoV a short intense tourney is probably better for the community than a long one (which you can still do in a league format maybe) with spikes and new ideas.
I just want to make the best of the game, I think I tried to post a lot to the community and playtesting group to help people and get AW further. I am personally no huge fan of Academy, too spiky due to low dice on luck and secondly less strategic, i really enjoy the mind games on prepared spells and hidden enchantments, academy is just lighter there. And yeah I agree with a few posters that some new mechanics are getting unnecessary complex.

And yeah I agree with a few posters that some new mechanics are getting unnecessary complex.
If you don't mind my asking, what are your thoughts on the recent mage/card releases?

I gotta support Mystery here.
If you don´t play bad/make mistakes, you should win almost all you matches.
Luck rarely has much to do with who actually wins a Mage Wars Arena game.
Id rather have someone tell me what i do wrong and what i can do better, than people trying hard not to offend me.
On the Tourney subject i really think Arcane Duels are doing a great job. Please continue. Try out whatever format. Slow or Fast i don´t really care :)

Hey Mystery! I think the dispel strategy is sound and i thought i mentioned it in the first part of the video. Parkdeck wanted to try a different route which is always good data to see. That route was massive passive healing. Rather than repeat he should dispel for a few hours i wanted to see the positive part of what he was doing. Powlich may have been ready for the dispels since ghoul rot is not exacrty a new strategy. I think if he went dispel the whole game would be different and it is then very tough to say the outcome. It looks to me that needing to work out a way to deal with finite life is a big problem with parkdeck, as he can heal more passively then the ghoul rots could damage.

Love the community and tho I have not been a part of the community for very long I disagree on the activity of the community.
I think it's pretty strong and I enjoy the different tournament formats arcane duels are doing and trying out. I don't mind the commentating and enjoy the positivity. I feel that the positivity will help along with critiques from players to learn and make better choices.
As far as entertainment level I feel Coshade does an awesome job. I also want to stress the awesome work all three Coshade, Sharkbait, and Puddinhead have done for the community. It might not come out on a consistent basis but it's still really good and entertaining. Thanks arcane duels!!!

Every year people cry wolf and panic. MW came out less than 5 years ago. The game is not dying, it's still growing, we might not have hit critical mass yet, but it's up to all of us to keep it growing and get there.
Anywho, I think Powlich's post was buried by the discussion; we are still looking for a judge for tomorrow, if possible.

Well Bilblo, Drefan, and Mystery did not compete in the tourney. And in some order, they are the three top dogs in mage wars ATM imo.
I think the entire expanded Charlotte community may take exception to this. I'd put our top 3, whether that's Ben, Millie, Mambo, Larrick, Sarah, and/or myself against those 3.

Ok so there are 3 favorites + 6 Charlotte pros plus the guys from arcane duels themselves all not competing. If you manage to get them all together to one tournament that would upgrade some level ;)

Nah. I suck.
I would also love it if the Charlotte boasters would play on OCTGN and prove their prowess.

Oh would you Puddin? Well here I am making a promise in front of the forums: I Benjamin "SilverclawGrizzly" Burton and I hereby declare I am not only entering the next OCTGN tournament, I AM GOING TO WIN IT!!!! 8)

Shark competed in ADMW WS.
And at Gen con, at least a couple Charlotteers are entering as well as Coshade, Shark, Biblo, Zot, and some St. Loius people.

Shark and Puddin drive down to Mace. I can play online to prove Charlottes mettle.

Keejchen and Powlich I can cover your match, I might be a few minutes late. My internet doesn't upgrade until tomorrow so I won't be able to stream it, sorry folks. However, I will post it as soon as I can after it is completed.

I'd like to request an upgrade of the list of what mages has been used.

I'm sure the matches would be epic!
Both sides have really good players. Although mystery is something else. ;)

Hey grizzly that would be awesome! As far as I know from this forum, you are mainly strong with your beastmaster. Be aware that in this tournament (and I guess future ones will be the same) you have to play s lot of different mages.
-
I'm very strong with my Paladin, better than my Straywood actually. I'm also skilled with the Adramelech and Anvil Throne .

Congratulations to Keejchen on his victory today! There were some technical difficulties with the recording, but thanks to Mr. Keejchen we have a backup recording. I will re-commentate and post to the Arcane Duels channel this week. Sorry for the delay everyone!

Just wanted to congratulate jacksmack on winning! I started in the tourney and opened with him with what I thought was my best deck and mage. He outplayed me and I was very impressed. Wasn't sure what I was getting into haha but now I see I'm not the only one lol. Also thank you to arcaneduels for hosting and getting me in I was last minute thing and unfortunately with the time and being busy had to drop out. I deeply apologize for that. This is a great game and hope to get back into soon. I manage and play semi pro baseball so my summers are very busy but comes fall and winter I'm back! Thanks again!
