Okay, so after having read the responses I realize that this was all just a misunderstanding and Academy doesn't get so much hate like I thought it did, and most people who play mage wars just happen to like Arena more.

Hate is a very strong word - I've not really seen Academy get hate. It also doesn't have a lot of love. *shrugs*

Academy seems like a great entry point.  I found Arena exciting, but a bit much to learn how to play with someone else who hasn't played before.  Academy feels more accessible and my friends are more likely to go, "sure, I'll give it a try."
